Fear

On Saturday morning Jungkook vaguely remembers soft lips being pressed against his forehead, but in his half-asleep daze, he couldn't be sure about anything. It was early hours of the morning, still way too early for him to pry his eyes open so he just ignores the act and rolls over to fall back to sleep. When he wakes up fully a couple of hours later, Taehyung is not laying beside him. Jungkook notices his phone is still on the bedside table so assumes he must be still somewhere within the house even if it was really out of character for Taehyung to be up before him on the weekend, in the time they've been living together this has never happened before. He decides to check the bathroom first thinking maybe Taehyung had woken up with the urge to pee really bad, but the bathroom was empty. He checked the kitchen next, empty. The living room, empty. The study was also empty, there was no sign of Taehyung anywhere in the house.

Now Jungkook would usually be one to panic, but seeing as Taehyung's phone was still there and his car was in the driveway he assumed he must've just walked to the shop down the road to pick up something, although he couldn't for the life of him think what Taehyung would need so urgently at eight am on a Saturday morning. 'Have hope, Jungkook. Don't panic, he's not gone, just stay calm.' He repeats to himself like a mantra in his brain as he walks back up the stairs and heads back to his bedroom. Instantly he checks the wardrobe for signs of clothes missing, he can't be sure if anything is gone apart from the Gucci weekend bag that he had bought the elder for Christmas, he hopes Taehyung had just put it somewhere safer than at the bottom of the wardrobe and hasn't actually packed it and left.

The bathroom was the next thing to properly check, there were no signs of his toothbrush or shower supplies which made a fear spark in Jungkook's chest, of course, them things would be the items you grab when making a quick getaway. 'Stop panicking, he's not gone. He wouldn't leave you, he loves you, he loves Asami. He said forever, why would he leave?' He's desperately trying to believe the voice in his head, but as the seconds pass by it's growing harder and harder to.

An hour goes by and the house is still dead silent, no sign of Taehyung returning for anywhere he could've walked to. Jimin must've picked him up, or Hoseok, he must've called them and told them how he wants to leave without making a scene, they would do anything for him after all. There were no good thoughts left in Jungkook's head, all were bad, all pointed their way towards the fact that Taehyung had run away. He decides to phone his mom, the first sign of panic she was always the one he would run to, she always knows what to do. The dialling tone seems to be haunting him, it rings for so long he's almost convinced she wasn't going to pick up. He almost cries in relief when he hears his mom's 'hello?' sounding through his phone, gripping the phone in his hand tightly as he tries to get his thoughts in line.

"Baby bun? Are you there?"

"I- Uh- Yeah, I..." Jungkook doesn't know what to say, his brain seems to be running so fast that he can't function properly.

"What's wrong? Are you okay?" Mrs. Jeon asks quickly, knowing all the signs of when her son was definitely not okay.

"Tae's gone." Jungkook manages to say, the words hitting him as soon as they fall out of his mouth.

"What? What do you mean he's gone?"

"I woke up this morning and he wasn't here. His phone is here and so is his car, but the bag I bought for him for Christmas and his toothbrush and shower things are gone, I think some clothes are missing as well but I don't know if they're in the wash or not, I never know what's in the wash because Tae usually does all that so I can't be sure if anything is missing or if it's just my mind telling me-"

"Kookie, breathe."

"How can I breathe, mom? Tae's gone, the only thing keeping me together in this world is gone." Jungkook cries, trying to keep his voice down as to not alert Asami who was asleep in the next room.

Jungkook could hear a lot of shuffling on the other line as if his mother was preparing herself to leave in a hurry. "Bun, listen to me. We don't know what's happening yet, so you need to calm down. Did you two have an argument? Is there any reason he would leave?"

"He did seem quite down all week, but I asked him about it and he said he was tired from work seen as it's coming up to half term and he has to write notes for the parents evenings and all that. He must've been lying to save my feelings, what if he's been planning for this all week? What if he's been planning it for even longer than that? I thought I made him happy, but I messed it up just like I mess up everything else in my life."

"Do not speak about yourself like that. We will work this out, okay? You need to stay calm for your child's sake, she can't know what's going on until we know for sure. I'm going to drive to you so I'll be there in a few hours until then you can call Taehyung's friends and see if they know anything. He wouldn't just leave you, Kookie, he loves you more than anything. Remember that."

Jungkook takes a second to compose himself, wiping his eyes which the back of his hand as he breathed in deeply. "O-okay, thanks mom, you're the best."

"Just sit tight for me and try not to panic too much, act as if everything is normal. I'll see you soon, I love you."

"I will mom, love you too." Jungkook says before hanging up the phone, allowing it to sit within his hands for a moment before dialling another number.

He calls Jimin first, his heart dropping as it goes straight to answerphone. Then he tries Hoseok gaining the exact same response, both of them have their phones switched off. He decides to look through Taehyung's phone next, maybe he can see the last texts he sent to people but he only falls deeper into a panic when he notices that Taehyung had deleted all of his phone messages, a thing he usually does because they claim they make his phone slower if he keeps them. Scrolling through his contacts he comes across Yoongi's number, he doesn't believe that Taehyung would talk to his boss about anything so personal but it was worth a try anyway.

Jungkook's thankful that this number actually rings and Yoongi's voice answers not too long after. "Jungkook? Can I help you with something?"

"Um, Yeah... I just wanted to know if you've heard from Tae recently? He's gone out and left his phone here but me being the goldfish that I am can't remember where he said he was going." Jungkook fakes a laugh, cringing at how awkward the whole thing sounds.

"No, sorry man. Suran is heading to the shop today so I'll tell her to keep an eye out in case he comes in, him being a regular an' all."

"Oh, okay. Thanks, Yoongi. Sorry for bothering you so early, bye." Jungkook quickly says before hanging up, not wanting to cry down the phone to someone he barely knew, he just hopes he didn't come across as rude to Taehyung's boss.

Running out of options, Jungkook decides to stick to his mom's advice. 'Try not to panic too much, act as if everything is normal. You can do this, Jungkook.' So with a few deep breaths and a quick wipe over his face, he heads out of his bedroom and back down the stairs to get a start on breakfast before Asami awakens. It's not until he's placing all the ingredients for pancakes onto the kitchen counter that he sees it, a sticky note placed on to the plate they used for the brownies Taehyung and Asami made after school yesterday. He curiously approaches it, his heart pounding as he sees Taehyung's handwriting scribbled across it, seeming like he was in a rush to write it. He picks it up, the words 'I'm sorry' staring back at him as if they were mocking his very being. That's all it takes for him to break down as if his worst fears were finally confirmed by just two words.

He scrambles for his phone, needing someone to actually help him and fast. He can't let Asami know, not yet. He can only imagine how heartbroken she would feel as his fingers press on a contact name, the one person he knows could come to his rescue in an instant.

"Jin, please, I need help. I-I need you t-to take Asami, n-now." Jungkook sobs as soon as the elder answers.

"Kook, slow down. What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

"I'll explain l-later, I can't l-let her see me like this... I-I can't tell her yet."

"Okay, Kook. Can you wait a little bit? I need to get Hana ready because Joon had to go to the office, I'll be as quick as I can."

"T-thanks Jin," Jungkook says before sinking to the ground and dropping his phone, not even having the mind to hang up first. He felt guilty for having to drag Jin into this, but he knows his best friend wouldn't mind given the circumstances, he'd do the same for him in a heartbeat anyway.

Jin arrives fifteen minutes later, although Jungkook feels like he's been waiting an eternity. Every noise made him panic and think Asami was waking up, the fear of her seeing him crying on the kitchen floor with no way to explain it was mortifying, to say the least.

"Why's Kookie sad?" Hana pouts as soon as Jungkook answers the door to them.

"Kookie is just feeling a little unwell, sweetie. Why don't you go and wake Asami up? The sleepyhead shouldn't still be asleep now, should she?" Jin says, giving his daughter a little push forward so she gets the message to leave the room. Hana nods and goes running up the stairs, allowing the two adults to sit and talk. "I called your mom on the way over here, she explained everything so you don't have to..."

Jungkook nodded, biting the inside of his cheek to stop himself from bursting into tears again. "Did you call his friends?" Jin carries on when he notices the younger wasn't going to talk without a prompt.

"Jimin and Hoseok's phones were both off, I called Yoongi but he said he hasn't spoken to him." Jungkook sighs. "I found a note in the kitchen."

"Saying?"

"I'm sorry."

"Oh, Kook." Jin sighs, patting the younger's thigh sympathetically. "I'm sure he's not gone forever. You two are soulmates, I'm certain of it. He wouldn't leave without a full explanation if anything he probably needs a few days away to think."

"I knew it was too good to be true, my life was never meant to be perfect after all."

"Don't think like that. You need time to yourself so I'll take Asami to mine, we can tell her you're not feeling well and Taehyung has gone out for the day. Just don't sit here and beat yourself up when we don't know the whole situation yet." Jin tries to add some comfort to the younger, and he succeeds a little. The thought of not having to hide his emotions from his daughter is definitely a weight off of his shoulders, even if Taehyung was still not there to make everything right again.

Jungkook manages a small smile, "Thanks, Jin. I honestly don't know how I'd live without you."

"That's what best friends are for, right?"

Jin heads upstairs to get Asami dressed and ready to leave, coming back downstairs with the two girls a while later. Asami gives her dad a short kiss telling him to get better soon and promising to make him the nicest drawing to make him feel better. Another part of Jungkook's heart breaks as she scoops up the sketchpad and pens Taehyung bought her and skips away with them, trying not to cry until he was fully alone. Jin and Hana say goodbye and head out after Asami, as soon as the door closes behind them Jungkook allows himself to fully break down.

Mrs. Jeon arrives at her son's house around midday, a couple of hours after Jungkook had been left alone. She unlocks the door with her key and finds her son snuggled into a blanket asleep on the sofa, the house completely silent. Her heart drops at the sight, Jin had updated her about the note that Jungkook had found and even she was finding it hard to stay positive at this point. She spoke to Taehyung every week and she didn't see any signs leading up to this, she couldn't even begin to wonder what had driven him to leave so suddenly when he had been so excited about flower arrangements and wedding menus just the week before. The woman decides to make some coffee for her son when he wakes up, thinking he definitely was exhausted from all that was going on. She heads back into the living room with two mugs and slightly nudges Jungkook awake, cooing at him as he groans softly just like he always did as a child.

"Tae?" Jungkook mumbles as he tries to get his eyes to open.

His mother's heart breaks from the words, but she decides to not draw attention to it. "Sweetie it's me, I made you coffee so sit up."

Jungkook groans louder but does what he's told, sitting up still curled in the blanket with his eyes half open. His mom hands him the mug and he's quick to take a sip to bring him back to Earth, needing the caffeine desperately.

"Jin called me so you don't have to say anything. I'm going to take Asami to Lotte World for the day, I've booked a hotel close to it to spend the night so you haven't got to worry. I'll bring her back sometime on Sunday, it'll be late afternoon so you can have as much time as possible to deal with everything." Mrs. Jeon assures, hoping it's enough to at least put Jungkook's mind a little at ease.

Jungkook just nods, still sipping his coffee without the intention of speaking.

"I'll pack her a bag soon. Just keep calling his friends, they're bound to answer sooner or later. I know it's hard but stay hopeful, okay?"

"Okay. Thank you, mom," Jungkook mumbles, not in the mood to actually speak but he was extremely thankful to have such an amazing mother to help him through such a dark time. He wants to believe that Taehyung will come back to him, that this was all just a bad dream he was having. So, when the door shuts and his mother leaves, this time he doesn't cry.

Jungkook finds himself sleeping mostly all through Saturday, his body fatigued from the amount of dread and sadness filling his body. He tries calling both Jimin and Hoseok's number every time he's awake, but it only makes him feel worse when every time they go straight to answerphone. He just hopes they actually have their phones off and haven't blocked his number at the request of Taehyung.

Sunday morning soon approaches, Jungkook couldn't face sleeping in his and Taehyung's bed so he stayed on the sofa. It wasn't the best nights sleep he's ever had but at least he wasn't engulfed with Taehyung's scent all night, taunting him and just reminding him of what he had lost. He didn't eat the whole day yesterday, which is why he probably feels even more like death today then he did yesterday, he didn't even think it was possible to feel worse but clearly, it was.

He finds himself staring up at the ceiling, contemplating every single thing that could've made Taehyung want to leave him. Sure, the couple had their arguments, but none were ever enough to make him want to walk out of the relationship, he thought it was the same for Taehyung but clearly, he was wrong.

Jungkook didn't think he had any more sleep left in him, but he still finds himself slipping into dreamland, maybe his body found that it was a better way of him dealing with everything. He's awoken by the door unlocking, it was early afternoon which confused him, wasn't his mom supposed to be coming back much later? He wasn't ready to face anyone right now.

"Kookie? I know it's Sunday, but why are you being so lazy? You haven't even opened the blinds! Where's Asami?"

So many questions, yet so little energy is all Jungkook can think when he hears the voice. But wait, wasn't that Taehyung's voice? He must still be dreaming.

"Are you sick? You look like death, my poor baby."

Ok, that was definitely Taehyung's voice. Jungkook cracks an eye open and is met with the prettiest pair of eyes that he loves so much. "I must actually be going insane."

"What do you mean 'going insane'? You went insane a long time ago." Taehyung laughs, strolling over to the blinds and letting the afternoon sun flood the living room.

Jungkook bolts up, hunching himself into the corner of the sofa as he stares at Taehyung like he's seeing a ghost float through his house.

"Why are you looking at me like that? You must really be sick. I'll go get you a cold towel, maybe that will help."

Jungkook stops him from leaving but gripping his wrist, his hand kneading the soft flesh as if he's trying to test out if he's dreaming or not. "Y-you're real?"

"Of course I'm real, silly. God, I leave for one day and you've already gone completely mental." Taehyung laughs as he tries to get his wrist from Jungkook's hold, he succeeds only for Jungkook to jump forward and hug his middle instead.

"Oh my God, I thought you left me. I-I thought you'd n-never come back." Jungkook sobs into Taehyung's shirt.

"What are you talking about? Wait- are you crying?" Taehyung says, concerned as he wiggles free and sits beside Jungkook on the sofa, pulling him close and letting him sob into his chest. "Baby, what's wrong?"

"I woke up, a-and you weren't there, you're p-phone was but your s-shower things and toothbrush w-was gone, and t-that Gucci bag I b-bought you. I-I called your f-friends and they w-wouldn't answer, and I f-found a note..."

"Kookie, I went for the spa day Chim booked for me, him and Hobi for some best friend time, I told you about it when he booked it at the start of the month." Taehyung slightly chuckles, trying to calm down his fiancé by running his fingers through his hair.

Jungkook takes a deep breath in an attempt to calm himself back down. "I-I thought that was next month... why did you leave your phone here?"

"Nope, this month, I put it on the calendar! And Chim made a no technology rule, claimed it killed the whole point of relaxation."

"I don't check the calendar..." Jungkook mumbles.

"Well, maybe you should start doing so." Taehyung laughs again.

Jungkook sighs in relief, not believing he worked himself up over something that was so stupid. He really should check the calendar at the start of every week. "But wait, what was the 'I'm sorry' note about?"

"I woke up late, I didn't have time to grab any cereal for breakfast so I ended up stealing the last brownie, I know we were going to spilt it so I felt bad and wrote the note so you wouldn't hate me, that's why I left the note on the plate."

"Oh," Jungkook says, feeling so stupid at this point he could crawl into a hole and die.

"Did you seriously think I left you?"

"Well, yeah, It really looked like you did. God, I'm so dumb, the number of people I dragged into this, my mom even drove up from Busan in a panic and took Asami to Lotte World for the day. I had Jin rush over from his house with his own daughter because I was having a full-on breakdown and didn't want pancake to see me."

Taehyung hugs him closer at his admission, "Oh baby. I should've reminded you about it the night before, I shouldn't have just assumed you remembered."

"I'm definitely going to check the calendar from now on." Jungkook laughs, completely calm by now.

Taehyung leans down to kiss him, he can't even imagine what Jungkook had been through the last day and a half, maybe he needs to work on his communication skills. The door unlocks and in runs an excited Asami and a tired looking Mrs. Jeon, Jungkook couldn't help but feel completely guilty at the sight.

"Daddys! I missed you!" Asami squeals as she jumps on the sofa in between them.

"Hi Princess, did you enjoy Lotte World?" Taehyung says happily.

"Uh huh! Granny bought me cotton candy and I went on so many rides!"

"Taehyung?" Mrs. Jeon stops in the doorway, confusion instantly striking her at the scene.

"Mom, kitchen please," Jungkook says quickly, leaving the other two on the sofa so he could quickly explain everything to his mother. "So, I'm a giant dumbass... Tae had a spa trip with his friends which I thought was next month but turns out I was wrong..."

"Seriously Jungkook? Do you know how much I've been stressing about how you're going to cope without him? How hard I've been trying to keep Asami happy in case we had to break the news to her? Jesus, I can't believe you."

Jungkook tries to pout, knowing it was his mother's weakness but only earns a glare in return. "I really am sorry. I panicked, I didn't even think about checking if Taehyung had anything scheduled for the weekend because he usually tells me the day before, we're equally at fault really. But I know I shouldn't have been such a drama queen."

Mrs. Jeon continues glaring, only sighing when Jungkook's pout becomes too cute for her to remain mad. "I should've known he wouldn't leave you so suddenly, but I am glad he hasn't. Next time please check the situation more, communicate with your fiancé better."

"Aye, aye captain."

Mrs. Jeon sighs loudly, muttering 'Lord give me strength' before walking out of the kitchen, leaving Jungkook behind with a big smile on his face. He's just happy Taehyung didn't actually leave, but the fact he got a taste of what it would be like if he did finally dawns on him. He hopes he'll never have to experience it again in his lifetime. He shakes his head, focusing on the fact that Taehyung was here and still loved him was much more appealing then going back to yesterday. With a smile still firmly upon his face he heads back to his family, ecstatic that it was still in one piece.
