Chapter Five
Izumi sat in her room, writing in her notebook. She turned to the Japanese language book, sharing silently. "Hello"Izumi muttered. "Safe...Goodbye...okay"Izumi muttered studying hard to be able to speak to people herself. She had been studying hard, and could now understand some of the things people said to her but not all of it. "Izu! Someone's at the door for you!"Her father called sounding annoyed. She stood up, coming downstairs curiously, finding Shousuke standing there. He waved to her, getting a beaming smile from her in return. "Shousuke!"Izumi beamed her mother looking at her in surprise. She wrote down in her notepad, and held it out to him.
"It's so great to see you!" Shousuke nodded, giving her a thumbs up. He pointed to her and made a book opening gesture. She nodded, smiling up at him, earning a small look of relief from him. "My place, hangout..."Shousuke offered. Denki and Izumi's father stepped forward, but stopped when her mother threw them a glare of intense warning. Izumi nodded, and slipped on her fluffy boots. She grabbed her winter coat and wrapped her scarf around her neck. She waved to her family, giving them a wide smile as she followed Shousuke out. Shutting the door behind her, Denki and their dad stormed away, protective auras waving off of them.
Izumi walked beside Shousuke, her eyes sparkling at the snow falling from the sky to the ground. She held her hands out, catching one in her palms. Shousuke took his gloves off, slipping them onto her hands. "Cold"Shousuke says pointing to her hand. She gave him a grateful smile, but took his gloves off and gave them back to him. She wrote down in her notepad, and held it out to him. "You'll be cold, I'll be fine, I'm used to having my hands freezing cold...." He stared at her, then took her notepad, slipping it into her pockets along with the pencil she used to write. He took her hands into his, gently blowing on them, the two standing in the middle of a small flurry of snow.
Izumi stared at him, her eyes wide in surprise. He continued to blow on her hands, watching as the redness vanished. He nodded and walked away with her hurrying after him. She smiled, Shousuke pushing the door to his home open. She stepped inside and took off her boots, Shousuke taking her coat and scarf, hanging them up for her. "Hey Shousuke!" Shousuke's mother stopped and stared at Izumi, before her smile grew wider. "Hello, I'm Shuuko! Shousuke's mother!"The woman smiled. "You must be my son's girlfriend!"Shuuko adds. Izumi blinked at her, looking confused, since she didn't understand anything except son and girlfriend.
Her eyes widened as everything clicked. She quickly shook her head, her eyes wide, then rapidly wrote in her notepad, before showing it to the woman. "I'm Shousuke's friend, not girlfriend, he's my translator! He's been helping me make friends!" Shuuko nodded, and smiled at Shousuke. "It's nice that you're making friends!"Shuuko smiled. That sentence Izumi understood, which made her feel proud that she was starting to learn, but her pride faded when she remembered that she still hadn't learned how to speak Japanese even after all that studying. Shousuke patted her shoulder, and led her to his room.
He walked past his sister's room, his sister looking at Izumi silently. Both started to tremble, staring at each other intently, getting nervous. Shousuke walked back and looked between them, before looking at his sister. "Friend"Shousuke says pointing to Izumi. His sister nodded, staring at Izumi still. Izumi wrote down in her notepad and showed it to Shousuke's sister. "Hi. I'm Izumi..." His sister stared at her surprised, then wrote down in her own notebook and held it up. "I'm Shouko..." Izumi smiled, earning a small smile back. Shousuke tapped her shoulder and pointed to his room. Christmas was around the corner and the break had started for them, which made Izuni excited.
She sat in Shousuke's room, a wide smile on her face as he brought in hot coco. She gently blew on the drink and took a sip, sighing happily at the warmth. Shousuke stared at her, his expression softening. She set her cup down and beckoned Shousuke over. He sat beside her, Izumi pulling the Japanese language book out of her pocket. She held it out to him, her eyes sparkling. "Okay..."Shousuke nodded. He set the book down on the table, Izumi and him leaning closer, their shoulders pressed together as he started to help her, pointing to each word. "Dog"Shousuke says. "Dog.."Izumi nodded listening intently.
"I brought you two snacks!"Shuuko smiled coming in with a tray of food. Izumi smiled, giving her a grateful nod. She grabbed some pretzels, Shousuke placing a cup of water beside her after she finished her hot coco. "Sentences"Shousuke insists. She nodded, grabbing some grapes. "The dog ran through the field"Shousuke says quietly. "The dog ran....th-through the field.."Izumi repeated. He gave her thumbs up, then had her repeat that two more times before making another sentence. An hour later, Izumi laid asleep, a blanket covering her. Shousuke stared at her, before reaching over and placing his hand on top of hers. "Night Izu..."
