Dinah Lance is a Fucking Queen
-This First part was written with the amazing @Morally_Gray them self. Thanks for writing this with me dude.
-Also, Trigger warning. There are mentions of abuse, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, neglect. So please, if any are triggering for you, don't read.
Fucking Hell Bruce. I don't care who you fucking are. They're kids. With real fuck problems. They need a real fucking Psychiatrist."
"But Dinah, ar-"
"No i'm fucking not Barry. I'm not a Psychiatrist. I'm not a Psychologist. I'm not a fucking therapist. I don't know how to help them with their problems. I can barely cope with my own. It's not fair on them, they deserve some one who can help them."
Tension had been building up within the league for months now, and it had all come to a head this evening, after someone had brought up that they thought the team's counselling sessions weren't 'making a profitable difference'.
"You volunteered to fill the position." Oliver said, almost willfully ignorant. "You said that you would talk to them."
"No, Oliver! I didn't volunteer to this! No, I volunteered to help them where I can! and most of these are things I can't help with! I mean CHRIST, some of the things I'm hearing from these kids..." She ranted, months of pent up emotion boiling up to the surface at once.
"I have to stay up at night stressing that something horrible will happen while I'm not here!"
"It can't be that bad. I remember what I was like when I was a teenager. It's just hormones and angst." Hal Jordan immediately regretted saying that when he saw the look Dinah gave him.
"Hormones and Angst? Hormones and Angst? Jesus FUCKING Christ. Have you not been listening. We as adults find it hard to deal with being hero's. They're kids. Fucking kids. Dick and Wally have been hero's for fucking 5 years. Kaldur for three. And the stuff I get from Conner, Mgann and Artemis. You guys aren't listening. These kids need help. Right FUCKING now. And if you won't get them the help they need. I'll do it myself."
"So pull them. Put them on the bench and give them a break." The very thought horrified Dinah. The only time some of these kids got a break was in suits.
"THATS NOT THE FUCKING PROBLEM! Benching them won't even help! If being on the team is one of the only things that motivates them, how would stopping that help them?"
"So?" Barry replied. "Maybe they just need to find things outside the team, and they can come back to it after they've dealt with their individual problems?"
"What did I just say?" Dinah snapped. "Look, this is unfair on the team, because you don't seem think they deserve to get help! It's unfair on me that I have to call them in the middle of the night to make sure everyone's alive..."
"Are you sure they're not just attention seeking?" Ollie asked. "Just over exaggerating."
----
Unknown to all the adults dick had hacked the microphones in the room to listen in with the rest of the team. None of them knew what the meeting was about, just that it was about them. So naturally they eavesdropped.
Thus resulting in the currant situation of M'gann quietly sobbing into Artemis arms, the Blonde putting up a calm front but was furious inside. Conner had long since left to punch something. Kaldur couldn't believe the League. Dick and Wally were just watching the feed. Dick just didn't look there, the ravenette hugging the older red head like a life line. The older not completely there.
----
"Aren't you listening?" Their den mother exclaimed, infuriated. "They're struggling, and you're more worried that they might be making it up for attention? Even if they were, you should worry that they'd have to!"
"Okay, you ne-"
"No, I don't need to calm down! You all abandoned me as their therapist and just expected me to fix problems I DIDN'T know about!" She snapped. "I'm NOT an expert, and I can't 'fix' mental illness, like you want!"
"Dinah, please let's just-" Diana was stopped in her tracked by the angry Blonde.
"Let's just do What Diana? SIT BACK And do nothing? Sit back as these kids kill themselves? Abandon them? WELL FUCK NO. I AM NOT LETTING THIS HAPPEN TO THEM. So if you won't do anything then I'm going to take these kids and find them help." Dinah was three seconds from letting a canary cry loose.
----
Wally stood up sharply, forcing Dick to let go of him, and ran from the room. The mention of suicide drove was always triggering, especially referring to the team. probably to him, since he thought he was the only one of the team with those struggles.
Kaldur tried to reassure Dick, placing a hand on his arm, but Dick removed it, not ready for that yet. Kaldur knew that Dick had the right to deny his attempts, but he needed to help someone right now. He was the team leader, he was supposed to protect and support them. he turned to offer his desperate attempts at help to the others.
Artemis pet M'gann's hair a little, eyes glued to the screen. She was so fucking mad. At first she'd felt angry and betrayed that their den mother had brought up their sessions, but this was avalanched by her anger and betrayal at the rest of the league- even her own mentor.
Oliver had been so fucking two-faced, always acting like he approved of the team's counselling sessions, but now saying that they weren't 'profitable' enough.
----
"Getting the team a professional puts more at risk than it's worth." Bruce told her, he seemed more angry about her bringing up the problems, then the problems with themselves.
"What? Identities? A therapist would break their NDA at risk of violence from the league's enemies, just to expose that six kids suffer from mental illness?" She tore at them. "Stop projecting your distrust onto them! It's THEIR decision about THEIR identities!"
"Then why are you so involved?"
Dinah lost it, it was like they were trying to ruin their kids' lives. "Because I fucking care about them! They're like my own! and if you Know about their problems, and STILL refuse to help them, then I might as well take them as my own proteges, because you clearly don't care!"
"Enough Black Canary, we will look into the situation, for now you will continue your sessions." Bruce's gruff voice rang through the room.
"No Bruce. That is not good enough. Despite your opinion these kids are your proteges, your fucking partners. Oliver this is where you fucked it with Roy. They aren't your fucking sidekicks. They're your fucking partners and there in desperate need of your fucking help. They need professional help. At least, that's what i thought before walking in here, now i see they don't. They don't need the help of people who won't say their problems are valid, that they matter. They need the help pf people care, people who think they matter. And clearly that is none of you."
"Dinah Please ju-"
"No Barry, i need to go check on my kids. And you all need to get your heads out of your fucking assses before i even think about talking to you." With that Black Canary storms out, her blonde hair resting on her shoulders.
----
Dinah needed to blow off some steam, she couldn't help the kids like this, she needed to steadfast and reassuring. All that made her scared, she needed to check on them. She stepped through the zetatube, into the silent living room of the mountain. The room was dark, drawing her eyes to the cluster of kids next to a glowing tv screen. She felt her stomach drop as she realized what they were watching.
She should have known they'd listen in on a meeting about themselves. They had a history of it. She felt SO STUPID for not realizing it!
How much had they seen? All of it? These were kids who had extremely violent reactions to just getting told off in class, how would they react to this? "Oh my God." She hurried towards them. There were only a few kids there. "Why are you watching this? Are you okay?"
M'gann looked up at her with tears in her eyes, the second she tried to say something she burst out into tears, holding onto Artemis tighter, sobs racking her body. Said Blonde had her eyes fixed to the screen, absentmindedly petting M'gann's hair. Meanwhile Kaldur was trying to get through to Dick, the youngest of the group stuck in his head. Kaldur himself barely keeping himself in check.
"Guys, where's Conner?" Suddenly a worse thought traveled through her head than the angry Superboy. "Dead lord where the fuck is Wally?""Left." Artemis barely got the word out without exploding. Dinah hissed in a sharp breath. "Okay, I'll be right back with you and we can talk. Did anyone see where he went?"
"Down the left hall." Kaldur said, quickly standing up. "I'll find him-" "No, it's okay Kaldur, Stay here with them. I'm the team's carer, it's more my job than yours, okay?" "Okay..." He sat back down emptily with the others. As soon as she got a faint nod from the boy, she raced down the indicated hall. "WALLY!" She called, fear rising through her body. "WALLY!" She saw the bathroom light on under the door, and sprinted to it.
"WALLY?" She tried the door, it was unlocked.Said teen was sitting in the bathtub in his boxers. as much skin possible pressed to the cool porcelain, mid panic attack. His skin on fire and his "Fathers" touch all over his body, his voice in his ear, Razor in his hands and arms bleeding, not there mentally at all"Wally!" She raced across to the boy, ripping the razor from his hand. She frantically grabbed a washcloth, pressing it against the few cuts he'd managed to give himself. Dinah grabbed the aid kit under the sink, and began bandaging him. There weren't many cuts, and looked like they were light enough to heal, which almost made her cry from relief.
"Wally" She whispered regretfully, sitting on the edge of the bath tub and holding the child firmly, and rocking him a little.
She felt terrible that she'd even brought the issue up with the league. She felt worse about how they'd responded. The fact the team had to watch that was horrific. "It's okay, I'm going to protect you." "No." Wally choked, not wanting to be forced back into consciousness.
Dinah shook her head a little, still cradling the boy protectively. "I love you, okay? I'll do everything I can to keep you safe. I promise." She waited, a lump in her throat. all these kids relying on her. She dreaded that while she was here with Wally, one of the others might be doing the same thing across the mountain. They sat in silence for several long minutes, Dinah feeling Wally's hysteria slowly burn itself out.
"I need to check on the others, but I want you to come." She knew he probably wasn't ready to, but didn't want to leave the boy alone for too long."Okay." His response was quiet and his voice was scratchy but it was there a response all the same. So Dinah Quickly and Quietly got him dressed and wrapped an arm around him, walking him back to the main are. The red-headed teen beside abnormally quiet.Luckily, the other four were still present when she and Wally got back, though the more composed-looking teens were starting to look far more distressed, staring at the camera feed like they were hypnotized.
"Let's not do that." Dinah swiftly, turned the screen off, sitting Wally on the sofa next to her. "Please, has anyone seen Conner?"
The teens who could've responded didn't. She had broken their trance with the screen, and they couldn't hide behind the numbness anymore. She wished she could spend hours with each child, hugging them, and reassuring them, and promising to help them...
But first she needed all of them. For once Dinah was hoping that Conner was masking his emotions with hypermasculinity. Angry superboy would be a lot safer with himself than Conner letting himself feel.
Luckily, said super boy was angry, for now. So fucking angry, but he didn't know at who. So right now he was venting on the punching bags. Having already broken 5 of them. He knew he shouldn't leave base and sitting alone with his thoughts would do him no good. So he was doing something Canary had recommended he do. He was currently blasting bad Musical numbers. Although he would admit there were some good ones in there and destroying a poor punching bag
Dinah made her way down to the training room, following the faint sounds of musicals. When she arrives she finds Conner beating the ever loving fuck out of a punching bag. She makes herself known to the angry teen. (Pratically bAbY)
"Conner, can you calm down please?" Her voice is calm and collected, really needing to get him back to the others. Conner turns around to look at her, anger and betrayal clear in his face.
"How could you? We trusted you and you just-you just-you just told them. Told them without asking us." His voice is low and deadly.
"I know Conner and I'm sorry. I thought they could help you guys. But clearly i was wrong. Please Conner, can you come back to the others, i need to talk to you." Her voice is calm and collected. The argument dies on his tongue, choosing to just leave the room and going back to his team, Dinah following.
Conner didn't want to sit with the others, which Dinah understood. She gave his arm a little squeeze, and made note to come back and check on the kid in a few minutes. He just stood on his own in the corner, playing white noise for himself to drown out the possibility of having any thoughts.
Kaldur had wholly taken over M'gann care, crying silently as he tried to sooth her. Artemis was doing the same as Dick had: Hugging her knees, and refusing to let anyone touch of talk to her.
Wally was very clearly not there, his eyes dull and distant.
Basically, she was screwed. Deciding to start with the youngest. She walked over to him and gently placed her hand on his shoulder, not missing the way he flinched at the touch, fully expecting something worse than the gentle touch she was trying to provide.
"Dick?" He didn't reply. "Come here?" She offered, gently teasing him into a cautious hug. "It's okay." She tried to tell the thirteen year old.
At the sound of Dick's words Wally broke out of whatever trance he was in. Dick was always and will always be more important than his own problems. Wally quietly walked over to him, picking him up and setting him down in his lap and gently ran fingers through his hair, whispering words of comfort to the younger.
"Wally, and you please make sure to keep Dick here?" Their den mother asked. Wally stayed alive for Dick multiple times, he would follow her orders in anyway if he could.
"Ye..." He muttered, holding his friend tight against his chest. That was something that worked, the team liked being given jobs.
"Artemis, can you please help me with something?" Dinah tried to rope her arm around the blonde, but she rejected the affections all together.
"No."
"You don't have to, but I'd really appreciate it if you could help Robin close the zetabeam, so Oliver cant come find us."
Artemis perked up a little. Her mentor's betrayal felt horrible, but the only thing she wanted to do more than cry and drink window cleaner, was get some sort of revenge.
"Fine." She grunted, bitterly whipping her eye with her forearm.
"Thank you so much, you're so helpful." She praised the girl. "I'm going to find some dinner for you."
She watched as Wally gently coaxed dick out of the protected corner he had made in Wally's chest. Her heart warmed slightly. She knew these two meant the world to each other. While they were shutting the tubes she walked over to the distressed Martian.
"M'gann sweetie." She shushed the girl's crying a little. "Can you do me a big big big favor?" M'gann whimpered, shaking her head desperately, she couldn't do anything right now. She was overloaded with her friend's emotions, even more than her own. "I just need you to help me find things in the kitchen. Maybe Kaldur could come to?" She offered.
"Yes. I can if you want." Kaldur told the girl softly, eager to help. She sniffled and nodded, letting them pull her to her feet, and waver towards the kitchen
Now she had taken care of 5 of them. Now she needs to take care of Conner again. Quietly she walked over to him, making sure Conner can hear her coming. "Conner, can I please talk to you?" Dinah asked him, wanting to talk.
"No" was his simple reply. From what he had seen during the meeting Clark had done nothing, absolutely nothing for him.
"Please? I know you don't like this, but it's something we need to do. Remember the first time we had this issue?"
Conner looked straight ahead and tried to ignore her. It was easier to stay furious at the world than to let himself feel. His den mother leaned into his view, trying to catch his eye. He turned away.
"Stop."
Dinah sighed a little, Conner had an entire encyclopedia inside his brain, but not a shred of emotional maturity. "Okay, well we put on some canned soup for dinner. Is it okay if I sit with you while it heats up?"
Conner desperately wanted to argue, desperately wanted her to go away. But he knew the thoughts would get worse if he was alone. "Fine." Was his only response
"Thank you." She sat on the carpet next to him, waiting in silence to see if Conner would need her.
"Do we need help?"
Dinah stayed quiet for a moment, thinking over her reactions carefully, it was like diffusing a bomb. Anything remotely incorrect could upset Conner, and that could set off the others again in a chain reaction.
"I-It's Complicated Conner." She said, trying to find the right words.
"How?"
"Because. You guys deserve to be heard. You deserve someone who can give you their complete undivided attention. Someone who can give you the right advice. And I'm-I'm just not that person."
"So you're giving up on us?" He ordered through grit teeth.
"No, I'm not." She said quickly, not letting herself be straw-manned. "I'm still going to be here when you want to talk, and I'm still here if you need help with anything, but I want to help you even more than I can alone. " She explained, slowly and cautiously.
"Do you understand what I'm saying."
"I guess." He grunted, eyes boring into the floor.
"That doesn't mean you have to tell this counselor everything, and you can still come to me if you'd prefer, but I want you to have the option of getting a professional's opinion. Because I'll do everything I can for you, but I can't do everything." She continued looking into the side of the boys face as he stared at the carpet. "Do you understand?"
"I-I understand."
"Are you ready to go sit with the others?" She asked in sort of a camp counsellor voice, tracing circles on the boy's back to help calm him.
Conner shook his head a little.
"Okay, well I'll bring you some dinner, and you're completely welcome to come sit with us."
"Okay." He muttered.
"But don't feel pressured, take your time." Dinah gave the boy a tired smile, she knew he needed to be given the option to sit out sometimes. She trotted back to the cluster of teens. "Artemis, how are you doing?"
"I did it." The blonde sniffed, still a bit bitter. "They can't come in."
"Good job! I'm proud of you." She told the girl. Dinah turned to the rest of you. "All of you, actually. I'm really proud of how strong you're being."
All of them but Wally looked up at her and gave her weak smiles. The red head opting to look down and mutter something to himself. Knowing what he's like Dinah figured it was something self degrading.Dinah got their food before stopping to check in on him. "Wally, you're doing a really good job. You and Dick have done a great job looking out for each other. The amount you care about each other is admirable." She said, setting a bowl of campbell soup for each boy.
"Thank you." Dick took the soup.
"You deserve help, and you deserve love, and I love you, okay?" The older boy look away, Dick went back to staring at the ceiling. "I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to either of you. You're like my own kids"
Wally just kept looking away, his emotions all over the place while dick was desperately trying to conceal a blush.
Dinah affectionately brushed hair from the teen's face, trying to keep the melancholy from her voice. "Promise to stay, and eat a little for me?"
Wally took a shaky breath, and nodded.
