She is very responsible and hard-working. She is also loyal to her family, friends, and the people she loves. She is creative, which is shown through her writing, and she has a secret talent for singing. She is also very generous and gives whatever she can to charity. Despite how responsible she is, her expectations for life are sometimes too unrealistic. She is also extremely stubborn and has the tendency to get carried away with almost everything. However, what she makes up for stubbornness and unrealistic expectations, she makes up for in witt and intelligence.
CHARACTER ARC: Layla El-Fayez was born in Amman, Jordan to an upper-middle-class Muslim family. Her parents have very good reputations. She is the eldest of her three siblings (two brothers and one sister), so there has always been extra pressure on her to get a good job and get married to the perfect husband. Though she has always been a romantic, she is afraid of getting married. She spent her time daydreaming and writing stories, until her mother died in a tragic horse and carriage accident when she was nineteen years old.
Since then, Layla was the matriarch of her household and worked because her father was old and ill. She utilized her talent in writing by writing letters for people to give to others in exchange for money. She also received money for performing songs in the town square due to her singing talent. When she was twenty-four years old, her brothers were already married or engaged, and her father grew worried that she would never marry, so he set her up with an eligible bachelor named Harry Dankworth. They weren't a good match, and her father didn't want to force her into marriage, so Harry and Layla broke off the engagement. They did, however, stay friends.
When Layla turned twenty-six years old, she traveled to Turkey to retrieve a special type of medicine for her father who desperately needed it. Unfortunately, she didn't have enough money for the medicine. Luckily, a young man swooped in and bought it for her. He later turned out to be a Turkish Muslim prince named Safet Demir from Istanbul. Sparks flew when she saw him again, and he asked her father for her hand in marriage. Her father was ecstatic, but she was scared, so she declined his proposal, upsetting her father.
She declared that she wanted to publish her writing before she got married, but she eventually agreed to get engaged, and she sent a letter to Safetaccepting his proposal. They are now happily married, and her father was able to see her get married before he passed. She did not take her husband's last name because it is uncommon in her country and she wanted to keep her family name.
