Chapter Two | The Race

"Saturday night is the most busiest and important night of the week, this is where all the big races are held" Terry rambled excitedly as we all made our way to the motorcycles.
"Shut up, Terry. Get on, Alex. You're riding with me" Jake said and I obeyed.
I put on the familiar helmet, Jake smirked back at me as he didn't have to guide me at all.
I got on behind him and secured my arms around his waist. Claire got on behind Terry and revved the engine before speeding down our street.
The dark had barely settled, Jake drove to Marcus' house where we would meet up with him and some of his and Jake's friends.
Suddenly we were a crew of eleven people in total, riding in motorcycles.
Marcus walked over to his motorcycle and scoffed as he saw it was me. "You're bringing her, to the races?" Marcus asked Jake, I frowned at the emphasis on 'her', I looked down, even with my helmet on Jake knew it had hurt me.
"Don't be a cunt about it. Get going, we're late" Jake retorted. I frowned and Jake knocked his helmet back into mine gently.
"Don't think about it" Jake said and I nodded slowly. We all took off and Jake pulled up at the underground parking lot. Three stories down.
I was surprised, in awe, in love! Beautiful cars were parked, then came the old motorcycles, sport motorbikes and it was filled with people!
"What is this?" I ask Jake in awe. "You like?" Jake asks with a laugh at my reaction.
He knew just from my tone that I did like it.
"Do you race?" I ask as everyone parks near each other. I get off and take off the helmet and place it on Jake's motorcycle.
"I do, Terry and Marcus as well, Claire does a little too but with her car" Jake says and I nod taking it all in.
"Hey man! Who's the fat chick?" A guy shouted to Jake and Terry.
"Fuck off, Cam" Terry shouted and the guy laughed crazily. I looked down, ignoring the pitiful glances the guys gave me.
"Let's see how the races are lined up tonight" Jake says and pull me with him, Terry and Claire follows as well.
Claire put her arm around my shoulder and pulled me into her side. "Don't think about that jerk, you're not fat" Claire said in my ear and I nodded slowly.
"Do you want me to teach you how to race?" Claire asked with a wiggle of her eyebrows.
I looked to my right and saw a race starting, two cars racing down the parking lot.
Everyone cheered and danced to the music playing, it was wild but somehow calming.
"Yes, please" I say quietly to her and she laughs before smiling.
"Oh look! Marcus is up" Claire gasps, we all stop walking and see the race about to start.
Marcus and another guy rev their motorcycle engines, fighting for the title to be the loudest, to show who was the biggest and the baddest.
I watched Marcus in awe. The black leather jacket, the matte black helmet, the matte black motorcycle to match it.
It was all good.
His opponent had a royal blue motorcycle and wore a simple hoodie with a white helmet.
"Who is he racing?" I ask her. "That's Dax, he's a pain in the ass. He's been trying to win over each one of us. He hasn't succeeded yet" Claire told me and Terry chuckled amused by the reminder.
The Dax guy opens his visor as we watch him, call me crazy, but I was sure his eyes found mine.
His eyes almost smirked at me, giving me a flirting look. I couldn't look away, I felt compelled by his eyes.
Marcus suddenly followed his gaze, he looked at me and flipped his visor up, his eyes were dark and cold.
I looked away immediately.
Yup that'll do it.
"Somebody's starring" Claire called out and nodded her head to Dax.
Jake raised an eyebrow as well as Terry. "Fuck no" Jake and Terry said in unison before stepping in front of me.
I rolled my eyes and scoffed, Claire laughed before pulling me with her to get away from the two.
The race began and the two took off, as Claire had said Dax hadn't won any of the races he went up against them in.
Neither did he this time. Dax lost and Marcus cheered.
Claire got the nights list of who was to race who and she was up herself.
"Why don't you ride with me when it's my turn?" Claire offers with a smirk.
"Really? I can do that?" I ask her surprised and suddenly I grow nervous.
"Yeah of course, don't tell Jake though. He will stop it right away if he finds out" Claire says and I smile at her.
"Let's do it then" I say as confidently as I can. Claire smirks before nodding, she smacks her tongue against her cheek before looking me over, giving me the elevator look.
"I never realized you could be the perfect racer" Claire said, surprise slapped me in the face.
"W-What? I don't race, I never even go above the speeding limit" I tell her embarrassed.
"Pft, doesn't matter. When I'm done with you, you will be the best driver there is and you will beat Jake" Claire says and I laugh with her.
"Hey, we're up next, let's get ready" Claire says and I nod. She takes me to her friend who brought her car for her.
"This is Alex, Terry's sister. Alex, this is Tabitha" Claire introduces and I smile at the girl as she gives Claire the car keys.
"Let's go win us some races" Claire says and I smile at her. Anxiety started to creep up on me.
I was sweating a lot, my ears felt warm and I felt my heart pounding. Claire and I got in her car and the engine roared as she slid out of the parking spot, drawing attention to us.
People realized who Claire was and they cheered for her as she drove slowly to the start line.
We both liked to the opponent and I saw the guy Cam from earlier wink at us.
"Hey! That's the fatty! Since when do you hang out with fatties, Claire?" Cam called out mockingly.
Claire rolled her window up and looked ahead of us. I looked at her with worry.
She had to win, being humiliated like that and then losing with me in the car was not acceptable.
She had to win now.
I swallow the lump in my throat and looked ahead of us. I then see Jake and Terry move through the crowd with Marcus behind them.
"Claire!" Terry shouts as they see I'm in the car. I give them a sheepish look and look at Claire instead.
Reading her face I realized she had no intentions of backing down, not even when she heard my brothers calling for her to stop.
I trusted Claire with my life. She had been in our life for five years, her and Terry had been together for that long.
"You still in?" Claire asked me and I took a deep breath before nodding confidently at her.
"Begin!" The race starter shouted and Claire took off faster than lightening. I gasped in surprise as she smoked Cam easily.
She surely knew her car. She won the race within forty seconds, I was speechless.
"Holy shit!" I gasp. Claire started laughing at me and I frowned confused.
"I'm sorry—it's just—I've never heard you curse before" Claire said and I giggled along with her.
She drove back and parked next to my brothers motorcycles. The door was ripped open by Claire's friends and they pulled us both out.
Cheering as we both apparently were marked as winners.
"Claire!" Jake shouted. He was raging, he marched up to us and Claire smirked and looked back at me.
"I got him, don't worry" Claire said and met him halfway, stopping him so I couldn't hear them.
Dax suddenly snuck into my view and I stepped back in surprise.
"Hey, I haven't seen you before" He said noting it with a polite small.
"Oh, I haven't been here before" I say and push a strand of hair behind my ear as I looked down.
A bad habit of mine. Insecurity and anxiety took over me.
"I thought so, do you like it so far?" He asks me.
"I think it's awesome, stranger" I retort boldly. Where that came from, I had no idea.
I didn't know his name and it was my way of making him tell it because he kept talking to me.
"I'm Dax, what's your name?" Dax asks and I give him a small smile.
"Alexandra" I say and he smiles. "A beautiful name for a beautiful girl" Dax complimented.
I didn't understand what was happening. But he ended up asking for my number, we exchanged them and bid each other goodbye.
