7| The Lake House

"So, is this a house? Or like...a cabin?"

Logan laughed in the driver's seat as we merged onto the interstate. Normally, I would enjoy camping. I've gone camping before with Logan and his family, but not for two weeks. That was a lot of camping if that was the case.

"It's a house. A big one," he said with a laugh.

Well that didn't surprise me. Logan's parents were extremely wealthy. I was just glad they weren't the uptight kind.

"A house...how have I not seen this house? I've known you guys forever."

"They bought it recently."

I nodded absently as I kept my eyes on the road in front of us. I guess buying a house randomly wasn't that surprising. At least, not where his parents were concerned. I just hoped that I didn't have to share a room with Logan. He and I have stayed in hotel rooms before, but I really just wanted my own space. Especially since I would be in a new place. Trying to sleep in a new bed has never been easy for me. I just wasn't one of those people.

"It's just us staying there, right? There's not some secret family reunion or something?"

God, I sounded paranoid. I guess I was a little. In all fairness, Logan didn't really know about my panic attacks. I was worried that if there were a ton of people there, it might happen again. Maybe Wyatt was right. Maybe I should see someone about my anxiety. It wouldn't hurt.

"Yes, it's just us. Since my brother got back, they've been wanting to have family time." He looked over and smiled at me before resting his hand on my thigh. "That includes you."

I returned his smile and placed my hand on his. "Good. That sounds good."

"Are we okay, Amelia?" He kept his eyes on the road."I mean...after our fight-- I just want to make sure we're good."

Well, he had a reason to be unsure. The two of us hadn't really seen each other or talked since we had lunch outside of my office. He's been working and I've been keeping myself busy with shopping for clothes and getting everything ready to take with me on this trip.

I wasn't still mad at him for what happened. One thing I hated was holding grudges. We talked about it and he said he wouldn't interfere with my work anymore. He also said he would stop pressuring me about moving in together. I personally found that hard to believe. He wasn't really one to give up on something like that.

It wasn't because it was Logan. I liked being in a relationship with him. I had feelings for him and I was attracted to him. But the thought of actually cohabitating with someone terrified me. I wasn't ready. To be honest, I'm surprised he was. Unless this was all a way of him trying to hurry and marry me so we could have sex.

I'm not really sure what my problem was with that. Logan was a guy for crying out loud. I know he wanted sex. I told him from the beginning that I wanted to wait until marriage. I don't know why I said it like that. It just slipped out when he brought up the subject. At the time, he said he was fine with it.

I believed him. At the time. There were certain times, special occasions or when we've had a few drinks, where he would try to get me in the mood. I shut him down every time, but sometimes he got angry with me. Maybe it had something to do with my anxiety? Maybe while we are on this trip, he and I could try again.

"Amelia?"

"Sorry," I blinked my eyes repeatedly. "What?"

"I asked if we were okay."

"Oh, yeah." I squeezed his hand reassuringly. "We're fine. Maybe this trip will be good for us. We can spend some alone time together. You said it's on the lake right?"

"Yeah, it is," he said hopefully.

"Maybe we can go on a boat ride." I laughed a little. "Your parents have a boat, right?"

"They do." He eyed me suspiciously. "You aren't going to take me out there and kill me, are you? Like some sort of revenge?" Even though his tone was teasing, his question still shocked me.

"What! No," I laughed. And I laughed again. "Wow. You're terrible." I let out a heavy sigh. "Here I was, trying to plan a romantic outing for us...oh, well."

"No, no!" He said quickly before he brought my hand to his lips. "Let's do it."

Chime-chime

Logan released my hand so I could grab my phone from my purse.

Wyatt: Hey, Lia. How far are you guys? I just got here and am bored out of my mind.

I laughed at Wyatt’s text. It didn’t surprise me that he was bored. He was not one who enjoyed time with his parents. His mother, who was a saint, tended to be a little overbearing. Considering he just moved back from across the country-- oh, yeah. He’s bored.

“How far are we?” I asked Logan. “Wyatt is asking.”

Logan looked at the GPS. “Looks like we are thirty minutes away. Tell him to keep his panties on.”

I shook my head. These two were constantly bickering back and forth. Not in a hateful way. It was a total big brother/little brother way.

Me: About 30 min. What do you wanna do today?

Wyatt: Well, when you get here, my parents will show you where your room is. Spoiler alert: it’s right next to mine. After that I want to show you something. If you’re up for it.

Me: Duh. I’ll see you soon :)

I slid my phone back in my purse and grabbed a granola bar. “Wyatt wants to hang out after we get there.”

“That’s cool,” Logan said while checking the rearview. “I want to shower and sleep. It’s been a long fucking day.”

“This is a house?” I asked incredulously. “It’s-- it’s-- a mansion!”

Logan chuckled as he entered a passcode on the keypad outside the large black wrought iron gate. “It’s not a mansion, Amelia.”

“If this isn’t a mansion, I don’t know what is.”

The gate opened and I tried to take in the gigantic house. I couldn’t even guess how many rooms it had in it. From the outside, it looked to be three floors. The lawn was well maintained and had three beautiful fountains with water dancing. There were large oak trees that filled the grounds. It was gorgeous. As we got closer to the house, I could see how the driveway split to go on either side of a fountain. Where were shaded carports on either side of the house. Purple flowers hung above that went well with the blue shutters.

“Okay,” Logan said as he parked behind his mother’s car, “let’s go inside. I’ll get our stuff later.”

I got out of the car and followed Logan up the gray steps to the red double doors. After opening the door, he took me by the hand and led me inside. As we stepped into the large marble foyer, my mouth dropped. Yep. Three floors. There was crown molding, expensive paintings, and a ton of other things I couldn’t take my eyes off of.

“I know, it’s a mansion.”

Logan and I both turned to the sound of Wyatt’s voice. He came straight to me and gave me a hug before slugging his brother in the shoulder.

“I said it was a mansion and Logan keeps saying it’s not,” I quipped and Logan rolled his eyes.

Wyatt laughed and Logan asked, “Where’s mom and dad?”

“They went into town to.grab a few things.” He glanced at me before turning back to his brother. “Mind if I borrow my best friend?”

“Not at all,” Logan answered and pulled out his phone. “Will you show her where her room is? I’m wiped out and want to shower.”

Without waiting for an answer, or even looking back, Logan started climbing the stairs. He’s been acting a little weird lately and I didn’t know how to take it. I was probably overthinking everything.

“Ready, Lia?”

“Hm? Sorry, yeah.” He led to the other set of stairs. “So, what’s this place you wanted to show me?”

He snorted as he led me to the third floor. “It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you, Lia.”

“You know I don’t like surprises. It ends up with me either having a panic attack or pissed off.”

“I promise neither of those will happen. You know you can trust me.”

I did trust him. More than I trusted anyone; even Logan. What the hell was wrong with me? Maybe I needed to see a therapist or something. Clearly, I had issues I needed to work out. We finally got to the third floor and I followed him down the long hallway. There were a lot of pictures of the boys hanging up along the walls. Then I saw one of me and Wyatt and I stopped.

“Oh my, God! Did you see this?”

Wyatt came to stand beside me and crossed his arms over his chest. “That’s our wedding.”

I laughed and pointed to his little tuxedo. “You were so adorable. Why weren’t you smiling?” I turned to him with an arched brow. “Were you not happy to be married to me, Wyatt Thorne?”

He scoffed at me and smiled. “I was nine, Lia. I didn’t want to be married to anyone.”

“Then why did you ask me?” I shot back in a teasing tone.

He rolled his eyes and started back down the hallway. “Let’s go, wife. Your room awaits.”

Even though I knew he was joking, the way he said wife made me feel things I wanted to ignore. I took one last look at the picture before I followed Wyatt into the last room.

“This is your room.”

Wyatt pushed the door open and I walked inside. “Wyatt...I can’t stay in here.” There was a large four poster bed in a very large room. There was a chaise in the corner and French doors that went to a balcony. “This is bigger than my apartment.”

“Yeah, it is,” he said with a laugh. “Go look at your bathroom.”

I groaned as I sat my purse down on the bed and walked towards the bedroom. “I’m not going to like this either, am I?”

“Well…” Wyatt drifted off as I walked into the bathroom and froze.

“Wyatt, what is this?” I covered my mouth with my hands and he came up behind me. He rested his hands on my shoulders and gave them a light squeeze.

“Something wrong, Lia?”

I shook my head. “I can’t believe this. It’s exactly like I told you before.” I always told Wyatt that my dream home would have a bathroom with a large glass shower with a bench, a claw foot tub, and a window that overlooked water. It was exactly like I told him. “How? What did you do?”

He shrugged his shoulders innocently. “When my parents bought the house, I had them renovate this bathroom for you. I knew if you came here you might be uncomfortable and at least you would have this little sanctuary.”

I turned to him and shook my head. “I can’t accept this! It’s too much. You have to undo it-- or exchange it or something.”

“Do you hear yourself right now? That doesn’t even make sense,” he laughed and leaned back against the sink. “Typical. The wife is never satisfied.”

I gave him a look and waved my hands around the bathroom. “Wyatt, I--”

He cut me off in a soft tone. “Happy graduation present, Lia.”

I looked over at him and could barely control my emotions. Okay, I couldn’t control them. I ran over to him and threw myself into his arms. “Thank you, Wyatt. It’s amazing and perfect.”

He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close. “You’re welcome.”

I wasn’t sure how long we stayed like that. I got lost in the moment. It appears we both did. When I finally took a step back, he frowned at me.

“What?” I asked when he frowned.

He reached out and wiped at my eyes. “No crying, Lia. You know I hate that.”

I grabbed a tissue and laughed as I wiped my eyes. “They’re happy tears.”

“Good,” he said with a side smile. “Now, get your bathing suit on so I can show you your surprise.”

“Okay-- wait, what? I thought this was my surprise.”

He continued to walk out of my room and called out, “Five minutes!”

I let out a long breath. I couldn’t believe he did this for me. How was I ever going to-- Oh...shit. “Did you say bathing suit?” I yelled but got no answer.

Dammit. I couldn’t really say no after he did all of this. He was good.
