6| The Other Pinky Promise
Two days. I had two days to pack two weeks worth of clothes for this 'family trip'.
"God, I really need to go shopping," I said under my breath. I was standing in the middle of my closet, feeling disappointed that I didn't have any really nice clothes.
I had some cute outfits from when I first started dating Logan, but about six months into the relationship, the date nights started to decrease and--as Wyatt so kindly pointed out--I don't have any girlfriends.
So, here I was, trying to pick which pantsuit or sweater set I was going to bring on this trip. And since I haven't even slept with Logan, I didn't have any lingerie or a need for it.
"I'm pathetic," I said to myself. I was in love with a guy who didn't love me back. I was also currently dating his brother as an attempt to try to get over him, and didn't have any cute or sexy clothes for this trip. Yep, pathetic.
The one dress that I had was the one I wore to the dinner when Wyatt came home. After having him unzip the dress for me, it felt weird to wear it again for some reason. I laughed at myself a little bit. I was really losing my mind, wasn't I?
There was a knock at my door and I breathed a sigh of relief. I ordered pizza an hour ago. Now at least I had something to take my mind off of my lack of clothing options.
"One second," I called out through my door. I grabbed my wallet and took out some cash for the price of the pizza and a tip for the driver. When I opened my door, I paused.
"Wyatt!" I exclaimed with confusion and excitement. "What are you doing here?" I glanced down to the cardboard box in his hands. "Is that my pizza?"
He laughed as he gestured towards the food. "I intercepted it for you. Don't worry, I tipped the driver well. I was in the area and thought maybe we could hang out for a little bit." He shrugged a shoulder and flashed me that smile that gave me butterflies. "Let's just say, at least at college, there was always somebody to hang out with in the dorms. I was bored. Can I come in?"
"Of course, you can." When I opened the door wider for him, he came inside and set the pizza down on the table.
I grabbed two sodas from the fridge before I joined him. "So," I asked as I took a bite of the pepperoni and pineapple pizza, "how do you like being home again?"
He pulled a slice of pizza from the box and leaned back in my dining room chair. My eyes were drawn to the way his muscles flexed beneath the black shirt he was wearing as he took a bite.
Thank God I was chewing my food, or else I would probably be drooling.
"It's okay. My mom keeps constantly inviting me over for dinner. I think she's overcompensating."
"Yeah," I laughed lightly, "your mom was always a little overbearing. But only in the best ways."
He scoffed at me playfully. "My mother has always loved you. More than I think she loves me and Logan."
I shook my head as I wiped my mouth with a napkin. "She's not going to like me when I show up to this family trip with barely anything nice to wear."
Wyatt's brows drew together. "What do you mean?"
I brushed my hands off as I chewed the rest of my pizza crust. "Before you got here, I was trying to pack for this trip. I was standing in my closet when I realized that I barely have any decent clothes. My closet is literally full of work clothes."
Wyatt rolled his eyes before getting up from the table and walking into my bedroom. "Come on, Lia."
"What?" I called as I followed him. When I walked into my bedroom, he was standing in the middle of my closet with his mouth dropped open.
"It looks like a tornado came through here," he said as he gestured to the many pieces of clothing I threw on the floor in frustration.
I threw my hands up in the air. "I told you! I don't have any nice clothes to bring with me!"
When his eyes met mine and he chuckled, I couldn't help but do the same. Something about being around Wyatt seemed to always put me in a good mood. No matter what I was dealing with.
"Okay, this," his eyes roamed over my piles of clothes, "simply won't do."
"I told you."
"You know what that means, right?" he asked in a suspicious tone.
For a second, I didn't know what he was talking about. Then, when my eyes met his...
"Oh, no. No, no, no." I started backing away. "We are not doing that again. I refuse."
He took a few steps towards me. "If you aren't going to come willingly, then there's only one way to settle this." He placed his right fist in his open left palm.
"Rock, Paper, Scissors? Really?"
He arched a brow and flashed me a smile. "Scared?"
"Oh, it's on," I breathed. "One...two...three!"
"How does a rock beat scissors? It doesn't make sense!" I yelled from behind the fitting room door.
I could hear Wyatt's deep chuckle all the way from in here. "I won fair and square and you know it. Come on, Lia," he whined. "Let me see."
I checked my reflection one more time before I exited the fitting room to go and show him. I was wearing a red sundress that came down to my knees. I actually liked it.
I stopped a few feet away from Wyatt and turned in a circle. "Well?"
He nodded his head and had a satisfied look on his face. "I like it. That's definitely a winner. Now go try on another one."
I stuck out my tongue at him before I turned and begrudgingly went back into the dressing room. Shopping was not one of my favorite hobbies. When Wyatt beat me at rock-paper-scissors, he dragged me to the mall to go shopping.
Wyatt reassured me that, not only would it expand my wardrobe, but it would make his mother happy. Wyatt really did know how to twist my arm. I guess that's what happens when you know someone for half of their life.
So, here I was. Trying on dress after dress and skirt after skirt. Whatever happened to good old fashion jeans and a t-shirt? That was more my comfort zone.
I emerged from the fitting room again and walked over to Wyatt. He looked up from his magazine and suddenly burst into laughter. I frowned as I looked down at my outfit. Okay, I knew it was a little different than what I usually wore, but I thought it was--I don't know--cute?
"What?" My tone was annoyed and it only seemed to make him laugh harder. "What the hell is so funny?"
He got to his feet and stepped closer to me. His eyes raked over my outfit quizzically. "Lia, you're wearing polka dots."
I put my hands on my hips. "Yes. So?" What the hell was wrong with polka dots? It worked for Diane Keaton. Yeah, she was a little older and had her own look; but I thought this fit me.
I could tell when he realized that I did actually like it. He sobered immediately and awkwardly cleared his throat before rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, it's actually...pretty hot."
My expression was blank. He could tell I didn't believe him. "I'm taking this off." I turned and started heading back towards the fitting room.
"Wait, wait! Lia..."
I ignored him as, I went into my dressing room and started changing out of the polka dot dress. I felt so silly and embarrassed right now. I honestly thought this dress looked really good on me. Okay, I've never actually worn a polka dot dress before, but I was feeling like trying new things. At least Wyatt was honest. With my luck, I would have worn it to a family dinner and got laughed out of the place.
"Lia!" His voice was right outside my door and I nearly jumped out of my skin. I held the dress to my body in an attempt to conceal my nakedness.
"Wyatt? What the hell are you doing in here?"
His tone was casual as he replied, "There's no one else in here. Listen, I'm sorry for what I said. I'm just not used to seeing you and polka dots. I promise, you looked beautiful. Please don't not get the dress because of me."
When I remained silent, he jiggled the handle. "Say yes or I'm going to crawl under this door, grab your dress, and go buy it myself."
I smiled at his phrasing. "You're going to buy it for yourself? Really? I mean, I know you look good in basically everything, but polka dots?" I teased, "You will definitely turn some heads."
"Ha, ha. Im serious, Lia. I'm giving you five seconds before I crawl under there and probably get arrested."
I stayed quiet out of spite.
"5...."
I couldn't help but smile to myself as he continued counting.
"4...."
I covered my mouth to stifle my laugh.
"3...I see security coming."
I couldn't hold my laugh anymore as I cracked the door and I poked my head out. "Fine! Now get out of here before you get arrested. I'm not going on this family trip without you."
He arched a brow. "Promise you'll buy the dress?"
I rolled my eyes and shifted the dress to free my left hand. I held my index finger out to him. His eyes went from my finger to my eyes.
This was our version of a pinky promise. Wyatt was the one who came up with it when we were juniors in high school. He smiled at me as he pressed the tip of his index finger to mine.
"I promise," I said with a smile. "Now would you get out of here!"
His deep chuckle was the last thing I heard as he left the changing area and I closed the door to my fitting room. I held up the polka dot dress. Great, now not only did I promise to buy the dress that I suddenly felt uncomfortable in, but I also needed to find an occasion to wear it.
I quickly put my clothes back on before I gathered the few items that I planned on buying. I was so ready to get out of this mall and go home--
Chime-chime
I grabbed my phone and opened the text from Wyatt.
Wyatt: Hurry up. Bathing suits are next, then we'll get some food.
Bathing suits...I plopped myself down on the bench behind me. Bathing suits. Kill. Me. Now.
