"Did you enjoy your lunch?"
I smiled at Lynette from the passenger seat in her car. Well, it was officially Monday. I promised Lynette I would spend most of the day with her doing wedding planning stuff, then Wyatt was going to pick me up to take me to my doctor's appointment.
Of course, she didn't know about that. He thought him and I were going to go get dinner and see a movie. To be honest, I rather do that then go sit in a shrink's office and discuss my inner turmoil. But I knew I needed to at least try. My panic attacks were getting worse the more I got them and it needed to be addressed.
So, after I woke up this morning, Lynette dragged me to brunch and now we were on the way to go try on wedding dresses. Every time I heard the term 'wedding dresses', I cringed a little. It's all just felt so weird and...not me.
"Yes, I did. Thank you again, Lynette."
As I continue to stare out of my passenger window, I absently played with the necklace Wyatt had given me for my birthday. After the cookout yesterday, I went up to my room and stood in front of my mirror for what seemed like hours--just staring at the beautiful piece of jewelry.
It was eerily similar to my mother's necklace. I'll never forget the day I realized I lost it...
I ran up the stairs and busted into Wyatt's room. He looked up from his computer and immediately got to his feet when he saw my tear-streaked face.
"Lia? What's wrong?"
I was so upset, I couldn't even speak. He placed his hands gently on my shoulders and I continued to shake my head back and forth. I couldn't seem to catch my breath.
He wrapped his arm around me and led me to his bed where I sat down on the edge. He sat beside me and continued to rub comforting circles on my back. "Its okay, Lia. Take a deep breath."
I took several deep breaths before I wiped my eyes and finally turned towards him. "I lost it, Wyatt. Its-- it's gone."
He frowned at my words. "What is?"
I opened and closed my mouth repeatedly. I couldn't say it out loud. I placed my hand on my bare neck and his eyes followed. When his eyes widened slightly, I knew he realized the truth.
"Your mom's necklace?" he asked with a surprised tone. "How?"
Fresh tears ran down my cheeks. "I think on the camping trip we went on a few days ago." I wiped at my face repeatedly. "I thought maybe it was just wrapped up in my sleeping bag or in the duffle that I took. I tore my bedroom apart looking for it. I can't find it anywhere, Wyatt. It's gone."
He was quiet for a moment. I closed my eyes, feeling even more devastated than I was when I realized it was missing. Saying it out loud, telling Wyatt about it, made it way more real.
"Well find it, Lia," Wyatt said with conviction. "We'll have Logan drive us down there and help us look for it. Maybe someone turned it into lost and found. Maybe it's still at the campsite we were at."
My heart ached at his kindness. He really was my best friend. "I called down there, Wyatt. Nothing was turned into lost and found and people have already rented our campsite. Its gone."
I got up and grabbed a tissue from his desk. I blew my nose and threw it in the garbage pail by his door.
When I looked over at him, he was watching me with an odd expression on his face. It was one of those times I wished I knew what he was thinking. He got to his feet and came to stand in front of me.
"I'm sorry, Lia," he whispered. "I promise you that one day I will find another one just like it and get it for you."
"That's impossible, Wyatt."
He reached out and wiped a tear from my cheek. "Nothing's impossible, Lia."
"We're here!" Lynette said cheerily as she parked in front of the bridal shop.
I pushed the painful memory of losing my mother's necklace aside as I got out of the car and stared in horror at the many dresses in the window. I had a feeling this was not going to be fun.
Two Hours Later
"I think we found the dress!"
I glanced at Lynette in the full-length mirror. She looked so happy. I took another look at latest wedding dress I tried on. I guess twentieth times the charm. Most of the dresses I tried on either had to many ruffles or just it didn't suit me.
But I had to say, this one seemed the best out of the bunch. It was a strapless dress. It was sleek and pooled on the floor around my feet. It had a lacy beaded top and the design continued around the dress all the way to my lower back.
"You think so?" I asked her curiously.
Lynette clapped her hands together with excitement. "Absolutely! I'll go speak to the saleswoman. You go ahead and change."
After Lynette left me alone, I tried to reach behind my back to unzip the dress. Clearly, I was having issues with this particular task lately. The zipper was too high for me to reach. There was no way I was going to undo it by myself.
With a frustrated sigh, I realized I needed to look for Lynette for assistance. As soon as I stepped out of the fitting room, I saw Wyatt.
He raked his gaze over me like a caress. "You look stunning."
"Um, thank you," I answered awkwardly. "I was looking for your mom. I need help with the dress."
He pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "She's outside on the phone." His eyes met mine. "Turn around. I'll do it."
"Wyatt..."
He closed the small distance between us and gave me a teasing smirk. "We could have been done by now, Lia. Turn around."
I did as he said and pulled my hair over my shoulder. Wyatt and I have been in this position far too many times already. This time, I didn't even take the chance of meeting his gaze in the mirror. I kept my eyes low while I felt his hands start to work the zipper.
As always, time seemed to stop around Wyatt. Goosebumps broke out over my skin as he gently started tugging the zipper down. My body involuntarily shivered as I felt the tip of his finger brush against my skin.
My heart started racing as he got to the bottom. The zipper on this dress went low. Very low. I didn't miss his short intake of breath when he had it all the way undone.
He took a step back and I didn't turn around. I couldn't. If I did, I knew I would see that lustful glint in his eyes. Even worse, he would see the same desire in mine.
Instead, I cleared my throat. "Thank you."
"I'll be waiting outside for you."
I heard his heavy footfalls as he walked towards the exit. Once I heard the door chime, I finally snapped out of my trance and went into the fitting room to change.
"How was it?"
I shrugged my shoulder as Wyatt started driving us towards the lake house. "It was good. Better than I thought. The doctor wants me to try some low dose anxiety medication. She wants me to come back in a couple days."
He kept his eyes on the road. "How do you feel about the meds?"
"It's worth a shot," I breathed. Normally, I hate it taking medication. Wyatt was definitely aware of that. I would take the occasional Tylenol or aspirin, but anything other than that I tried to stay away from.
"I'm proud of you, Lia."
I looked over at him. "Thank you for bringing me, Wyatt. And...thank you for staying."
He kept his eyes on the road, but I saw a corner of his mouth lift in a smile. "I told you, Lia. You never have to thank me."
The drive to the lake house was quick and I was grateful for it. I've been out most of the day already, and I wanted to take a hot bath and try to relax.
Lynette sent me a text and told me she was able to go ahead and get the dress we decided on and would have it stored somewhere at the lake house. Everything about this day just felt so surreal. When I came on this surprise trip, I was not expecting to go hunting for a wedding dress or filling a prescription for anti-anxiety meds.
After we finally returned to the lake house, Wyatt and I were quiet as we made our way inside. I was still a little shaken from my doctor's appointment and didn't really feel like talking. That was the reason why it was probably being quiet too. He knew that doctor's appointment made me uncomfortable and was trying to respect that.
"I'm going to see what Logan's doing," I said to Wyatt when we entered the foyer. "See you at dinner?"
"Yeah," Wyatt answered with a half smile. "See you at dinner."
I started ascending the long staircase to the third floor and tried not to let the stress of the day overwhelm me. Thankfully, my large relaxing bathtub was waiting. First, I wanted to stop in and say hey to Logan. To be honest, he and I haven't really spoken much today.
I knocked on his door a few times and waited. "Logan?"
When I didn't receive an answer, I pushed it open slowly and heard the sound of his shower going.
"Logan?" I called a little louder as I entered his room.
"Hey, babe," he called over the loud spray at the water. "How was your day?"
"It was good," I answered as I walked around his room. I looked at the pictures on his wall and the large four poster bed in the center of the room. "I was going to go take a bath then go down to dinner. See you down there?"
"Uh, actually I was going to meet up with an old high school buddy of mine. He's in town."
As I walked by his nightstand, his cell phone lit up with a new text message. I frowned as I saw what it said.
5:23pm
G: Don't be late tonight. I can't wait to see you.
My heart dropped. That didn't sound like a friend. My hand shook as I lifted his phone and opened his messages.
"Yeah," I called back to him. "That sounds like fun. Where are you meeting him?"
I opened the conversation and saw the last few messages.
11:23am
G: Good morning handsome. I had a good time last night.
11:27am
Logan: Good morning yourself. I had a great time too. I'm glad we did it.
12:10pm
G: Can I see you tonight? And longer than just dinner this time.
12:36pm
Logan: That can be arranged. Where?
12:40pm
G: My hotel. 7pm.
12:42pm
Logan: I'll be there.
"We're going out for drinks at the bar down the street," Logan answered.
I sat his phone down and backed away from the secrets I just uncovered. I heard the door open and he emerged with a towel around his waist. He frowned when he saw my expression.
"Hey, you okay?"
I looked up at him and tried to get a hold of myself. I need to process all of this. Or at least try to.
"I'm fine. Just tired."
He smiled and brushed my hair back. "Well, go get some rest and enjoy dinner. If you're still up when I get home, maybe we can watch a movie or something."
"Yeah, sounds good."
I gave him a kiss on the cheek before I turned and left his bedroom. My heart was hammering against my chest as the messages between him and this anonymous G flashing through my mind.
When I finally got to my room, I shut and locked the door behind me. I've known Logan forever and I never expected this.
"He's having an affair," I whispered into my empty bedroom.
