13| The Prom
Lia & Wyatt
March 13th, 2016
18 Years Old
“You having a good time?” I asked Lia as I stood beside her.
“Not really.”
I scanned the crowded gym-turned-dance-floor for her date. Jake Hill. What a pompous fucker. I hated that guy.
“Where’s Mr. Perfect? Shouldn’t he be twirling you around the dance floor right now?”
Lia elbowed me playfully. “He’s not perfect. And he said he went to get us some drinks.”
She was right about one thing. He was definitely not perfect. Jake was known as one of those guys that liked to go through women like candy at school. He was on the football team and pretty popular. Man, I hated that guy. But my hatred for that fucking meathead had nothing to do with the fact that he was here with Lia. Nope. Nothing to do with that at all.
“You wanna dance?” I asked her.
I saw her head whip in my direction. “Excuse me? Did Wyatt Thorne just ask me to dance?” She smiled shyly and my chest tightened. She had the best smile. “I thought you didn’t like to dance.”
I kept my gaze on the dance floor and I felt my cheeks heat. “Shut up, Lia.” I held out my hand. “Come on, before I change my mind.”
She took my hand and I led her through the sea of students to a clear spot on the dance floor. She wrapped her arms around my neck at the same time I placed my hands at her waist. She had her hair curly and pinned up high. A few curls hung by her face. The dark color of her hair stood out against her pale skin. She had light makeup on that matched the sleeveless black dress she was wearing. She was breathtaking.
“Speaking of dates,” she said as we moved our bodies to the music, “where’s yours?” She glanced around the gym. “I don’t see Mrs. Perfect anywhere in sight.”
I laughed at her words. Yeah, Lilly Stevens was definitely not perfect. If anything, she belonged on the arm of Lia’s date. Which was how it should have been. I wanted to come here with Lia. I planned on asking her to come with me-- as friends, of course -- but I chickened out.
Now, she was here with Jake Fucking Hill. Lia didn’t believe me when I told her he was trying to get into her pants. Well...her dress, rather. She shook her head at me and told me I was an idiot if I thought she was sleeping with him. She had a point. I owed her more than that.
I twirled her around and pulled her back against my chest. She giggled and looked away shyly before I saw her gasp in surprise. “Jake!” She pulled away from me as the asshole in question walked up to us. “Where did you go?”
Jake looked at me with a nasty sneer before he smiled at Lia. “I went to get some drinks, remember?”
Lia glanced at his empty hands. “Where are they?”
Jake’s face paled. “Damn, I was talking to Jim and I forgot them. Anyway,” he wrapped his arm around Lia and started ushering her towards the gym’s exit, “let’s go get some air.”
Just as I saw him escorting Lia out of the gym, I didn’t miss the wink he shot two other girls on his way out. I also knew he probably had been hooking up or talking to another girl when Lia thought he was getting ‘drinks’.
Feeling sick at the thought of him taking her somewhere a little more private, I decided to head home. I had no idea where my so-called date disappeared, and to be honest-- I didn’t really care.
I got in my car and started driving the twenty minutes it took to get home. I was a few miles away when my cell phone rang. I frowned at Lia’s name on the caller-ID.
I answered the phone immediately. “Lia? You okay?”
“Wyatt? Where are you?” her words came out on a choked sob. She was crying. What the fuck?
“I was headed home.” Not anymore. She needed me and I was going to help her. “Lia, where are you? What’s wrong?”
She was quiet for a moment before finally asking, “Can you come get me? I’m at the Hilton downtown. Room 413.”
I gripped the phone in my hand. That motherfucker. “I’m on my way.”
I threw my phone in the passenger seat before I jerked the steering wheel to the left. My tires screeched as multiple cars honked at me as I made the illegal turn and cut them off. I didn’t care. I slammed my foot on the gas pedal and headed in the direction of the hotel. A million different scenarios ran through my head as I raced to get to Lia. I swear if that bastard did something to her…
I parked in a random spot at The Hilton, not bothering to even lock my fucking doors as I ran inside the hotel. I followed the signs to the elevator and took it to the fourth floor.
After what felt like hours in that metal prison, I stepped into the long hallway and quickly found room 413. The door was cracked so I didn’t bother knocking. I pushed myself inside the room and shut the door behind me. Lia was pacing in the middle of the room with her arms wrapped around herself.
“Lia?”
She turned towards me. She ran at and burst into tears. She threw herself into my arms and buried her face in my neck.
“Shh, it’s okay, Lia.” I rubbed her back hoping it would comfort her. “Tell me what happened.” Please tell me I have a reason to punch that pathetic asshole in the face.
She pulled back from me and wiped at her eyes. “You were right about Jake. He asked me to the prom because he wanted to sleep with me. It was all some kind of plan he had with his friends.”
“I’m going to kill him. I’m going to kick his fucking ass, Lia. I promise--”
“Wyatt, no,” she said firmly. “He didn’t hurt me or anything. He’s just a slimy asshole and it isn’t worth it." She released a heavy sigh. "Can you just stay with me for a little while? Then take me home?”
I took her by the hand and led her towards the bed. We both sat on the edge as she tried to get control of her emotions.
“Why did he pick me for this, Wyatt? Do I come off as some easy girl that just sleeps with anyone?” She turned her head towards me and my heart broke at the tears streaming down her cheeks. “Why didn’t I see it? What’s wrong with me?”
“There’s nothing wrong with you, Lia. Not one damn thing.”
She rolled her eyes. “You’re just saying that because you’re my best friend.”
“No, I’m not.” I got to my feet and held my hands out to her. She eyed my hands then looked up at me. “Come here,” I beckoned.
When she finally stood in front of me, I reached out and wiped her tears away with my thumbs. “Lia, there is nothing wrong with you.” I cupped the side of her face to keep her from looking away. When she finally met my gaze again, I couldn’t stop the words that came out of my mouth next. Or my actions.
I brushed one of the long curls out of her face and stroked her cheek. She had the softest skin... “You are incredibly beautiful, Lia. And sweet. You have a heart of gold and the most stubborn personality.”
She laughed at that and I smiled at her. My eyes fell to her lips before I looked back up into her chocolate eyes.
“Any guy who doesn’t know how lucky he is to have you, is an idiot and doesn’t deserve you,” I whispered. “You deserve someone who will treat you right. Someone you can trust and makes you laugh.” Someone like me-- I wanted to say. It was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn’t get the words out. “Don’t ever think you’re easy, Lia.”
I was about to take a step back from her when she placed her hand on my chest. I was still in my tux and she smoothed her hand down the front of my suit. I had no idea what was happening, or when the energy in this room changed. My heart started banging against my rib cage and my feet were glued to the floor.
I felt like I should say something. Anything. But words failed me. Lia didn’t say anything, either. She stood on her tip toes and that’s when everything I thought I knew changed.
She pressed her lips against mine. They were soft and inviting. I could tell she was unsure at first. Hesitant. I didn’t blame her. She and I never kissed. Not like this, at least.
When I felt her tongue run along the seam of my lips, I panicked and pulled away. “Lia, what are we doing? I don’t think we should--”
She put her fingers to my lips to silence me. “Do you trust me?”
“Of course I do.” She was the only one I trusted completely.
She slid her hands under my jacket and pushed it from my shoulders. The heavy material fell to the floor and she started to slowly unbutton my shirt. “If you don’t want this, Wyatt--”
I pulled her body against mine and kissed her with a need I didn’t know I had. She responded to me the same way. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders as I reached for the zipper at the back of her dress. The sheer gown fell and pooled at her feet. I reached for the bottom of my shirt and tugged it from the waistband of my pants.
She pulled away just as I removed it and dropped it on the floor. We stood there like that for a moment. We both knew that if this went any further, there was a big possibility of it changing everything.
That didn't seem to stop either one of us. Just as Lia reached behind herself to unhook her strapless bra, my hands went to the waistband of my pants.
She was standing in front of me only wearing her black panties, and I only had my boxers on. The strange part was...this didn't feel weird.
Lia had always been a little shy and modest while we were growing up. But as my hungry gaze took in the sight of her bare breasts and beautiful body...there was no modesty in this room. Not tonight.
Lia took a few steps towards me and closed the short distance between us. I knew what she wanted. I wanted it, too. But I needed to know...
"Are you sure about this?"
The left corner of her mouth lifted in a smile. She pushed my boxers down before she placed her hands on either side of my neck. "Make love to me, Wyatt," she whispered.
Whatever control I had after that snapped. My arms circled around her and I captured her lips in a passionate kiss. We tumbled into the bed and our kisses became more hungry and deep.
I knew she could tell I was still hesitant when she guided my hand to her soaking wet panties. She was showing me exactly what she wanted. This was definitely a different side to the Lia that I knew.
I groaned into her mouth as I stroked her through the thin lace barrier. It was the one thing that kept us from taking this any further.
I pulled back from the magic of her kiss and looked in her eyes. When she lifted her hips off of the bed, I slid her panties down her long legs and tossed them aside.
She pulled my mouth back to hers. I lifted her leg as my hard length teased her entrance. She moaned my name-- telling me she wanted me to continue. So I did. I slid inside her welcoming heat slowly. This was her first time. Hell, it was mine, too. But I knew it was going to hurt her and I was trying to be careful.
Once I was all the way in, I studied her face. "Are you okay?"
She nibbled her bottom lip with her teeth. "Yes."
I withdrew just enough so I could thrust back inside. This time faster than the first. She gripped my shoulders as she arched her back underneath me.
“You feel amazing,” I breathed against her lips. It was like my nerves were on overdrive. I felt her fingers slid down my back as she urged me to keep going. I felt her soft thighs as she wound her legs around my waist. I also felt the most amazing pleasure that came from the warm center of her body. I felt Lia.
I dropped my head into the hollow of her neck as I continued to make love to my best friend. I knew this night would stay with me forever. I would never forget the way my name sounded when she moaned it from pleasure. Most of all, I would never forget the way it felt to be inside her. Heaven. It felt like heaven.
"Wyatt? Did you hear what I said?"
No, I didn't hear what she said.Well, I did. I just couldn't believe it. The memory of the time she and I lost our virginity together was fresh in my mind. Not to mention, the little confession that she just told me.
I tried to get a grip and focus on the present. "You and Logan never had sex?"
She shook her head. "Just you," she admitted quietly. I continued to stare at her blankly and she got even more nervous. "Have you, you know, been with anyone?"
It would have probably been in both of our best interests if I lied to her. But the truth spilled from my lips. "No, I haven't."
I saw the surprise and disbelief in her eyes and it mirrored my own. I knew she wasn't the type of girl that slept around, but I was so sure that she would have been with someone else after me. I guess she assumed the same.
"What does this mean?" she asked me quietly.
That was the million dollar question wasn't it.
