6. The new secretary

The ticking of the clock, the noise from the traffic, the construction work outside, the chattering sound of employees, almost everything irritated Riian. Pia was the only thing that occupied his mind. He was so angry that he wanted to ground her for life.

If he had known earlier, letting her go to that party would result in her lying unconscious with a stranger, Riian would have never allowed it. As images of Jai floated in his mind, Riian yelled, "I am going to kill you. I am going to chop your balls off and feed them to the dogs." Riian banged his hand on the wooden desk, his knuckles turning white. He was more than just angry. Thanks to the soundproof walls, no one had any clue outside that their boss had lost a fuse while thinking about his sister.

Riian sighed for what felt like the hundredth time. The thoughts of his sibling kept him distracted from work the whole day. As his eyes swept across the family photo placed on his desk, Riian's face softened. "What am I going to do with you?" he thought as he ran his fingers across Pia's face. Then his eyes fell on the next person grinning widely with two missing teeth. "You are a big headache as well," Riian murmured at Parth's seven year old face. After last night, Riian had two questions that he had trouble asking his siblings since one was in no shape to answer and the other one sneaked out of the party.

The first question concerned Pia. Pia always had a low tolerance for alcohol, so it made no sense why she would willing take up a challenge that she clearly had no chance to win. And secondly, what was Parth doing when the entire incident took place. He was nowhere inside the house before or after the incident. "What was he doing during the entire time?" The more he thought about this, the more it was starting to give him a headache.

As his mind drifted to the many thoughts encircling at the back of his mind, a figure appeared by the side of his table. It was not until the man coughed two times, the second being louder, that Riian finally noticed someone standing. Startled, Riian looked up. He was expecting Donna with his evening snack. Instead there was a man in office apparel with neatly combed hair looking expectantly at Riian. The man might me twenty-twenty two, maybe less.

With a puzzled expression, Riian asked, "Yes?"

"Sir, my name is Vihaan Joshi. Starting today, I am your new secretary," the man who called himself Vihaan put his hand forward for Riian to shake. He said everything in one breath without even a pause. Riian looked at the man and back at his outstretched hand, which seemed to be shaking slightly.

"Is this the new secretary that grandfather wanted me to meet?" Riian idly thought. Five feet six maybe, normal brown eyes, dark grey suit, nothing about him seemed notable yet this person looked strangely familiar to Riian for some reason.

Bemused, he shaked Vihaan's hand nonetheless. "Please have a seat," Riian pointed to the seat opposite him.

"I hope Donna had already prepped you about your job profile," Riian said as Vihaan quickly settled himself in another chair, placing his hands on the table.

"Yes, she had already mentioned everything in the mail she sent. Tomorrow onwards, she will show me around and how everything works," Vihaan replied, maintaining eye contact with his new boss.

"Good. I expect you to learn quick. I heard you were being referred by my grandfather," Riian's asked, hiding the hint of confusion in his voice. He still couldn't wrap his head around the fact why his grandfather sent a such plain looking guy with no particular talent to work under him. There was no air of confidence around Vihaan. Instead he looked so fragile, it won't be a surprise if he got bullied by the office staff.

"Yes, I have known the President for a long time. It was during one of his seminars that we first met. When he shared his life experience and the struggles he had, I knew I would follow him," Vihaan smiled sincerely. This job was important to Vihaan. His brother's future depended on it. No matter what, he needed to show Mr.Riian that he could do this. The only problem was he felt like he would throw up at any moment. The nervousness was getting to him, slowly showing on his face.

"I am here to show you I can do it. I will always be there when you need me. I won't let you down sir." As Vihaan finished, a smile appeared on Riian's face. There was something about Vihaan that felt oddly nostalgic. The question was what.

"I hope you do that." Riian said to which Vihaan gave a sharp nod. As Riian stared at his monotonic brown eyes, "Have we met somewhere before?" Riian asked inquisitively, his brain trying to remember where he might have seen his new secretary.

"N-No sir. I don't think so," Vihaan replied way too quickly, choking on the last few words. He immediately regretted rushing his words.

If it was possible to dig a hole and die, Vihaan wanted to do that. Before coming here, Donna had warned him not to say anything that might come to bite him later. Apparently, their boss was a very resourceful person, he would dig up information on spot if he detected even slight deception. And Vihaan wouldn't like that, would he now.

Looking up, he was afraid to meet Riian's eyes. Rumor has it that Riian could tell whether someone was lying by just looking at them. 'Be confident' Vihaan reminded himself. However Riian just stared back at him. There was no hint that Riian had noticed his earlier slip up.

"So, Mr.Vihaan, have you ever played any video game or have any idea about the manufacturing procedure, considering you just joined one?" Riian asked, with one eye on his phone and other on Vihaan.

As the two men became invested in their conversation about their company's new product, the meeting stretched on. Under the table, Riian's free hand got busy typing a message to an anonymous number, asking for information about a certain person.

At the end of the message, Riian texted two words, 'Vihaan Joshi'.
