My Aphmau RANT
I CAPITALIZED rant because, this is a full on rant. I applaud anyone who wants to defend a person from haters but, it's come to the point in the Aphmau community where I swear to Irene that I've written this rant five times and deleted it because, I don't want people to think I'm hating on Jess and BluJay studios. At this point though, there is one freaking detail about Mystreet that bugs the everliving hell out of me that I need to address it so I can move on.
This is one detail. This is one rant. This is my personal opinion. If any of you are sensitive to rants about Aphmau, then I suggest you drop out of this one. I love you all. But this is something I need to get off my chest. Who knows? Maybe I might bring some light onto the subject and people might also agree with me.
Okay, here we go. The one thing that bugs me about Aphmau with Mystreet is...
Garroth's dumb blonde stereotype.
First, let's get some background info. What's the definition of dumb? Well, Dictionary.com writes that it's;
"Lacking intelligence or good judgement; stupid; dull-witted."
NOW BEFORE YOU ALL SAY "Oh, Garroth isn't a dumb blonde silly Candi! He's just the comedy relief!"
Okay, okay. I see where you could think that. But, you see, the characters actually have called him dumb before. Let me show you. Watch the beginning skit of this video;
[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]
Zane says after Garroth made a rude comment about Zane's eyeliner; "The same way you traded your brains for dumb." And then, Katelyn agrees saying; "Garroth did get pretty dumb."
First of all, when did attacking someone's intelligence compare to insulting someone's choice of makeup? That's a little unfair but, they basically tell him that he's "lacking intelligence", "stupid", or "dull-witted". Then, if that's wasn't enough, Garroth then states that if Aphmau wasn't blind to emotions they would've been a couple. Okay, I'll admit. That's bold to say. But, Aphmau then says it's because he made poor choices. "Lacking...good judgement" if I were to put it in Dictionary.com's words. Also, Aphmau, I'm sorry but, Garroth was young and a teenage boy. At the age of either 15-16 if he was a sophomore. He apologized for taking away your first kiss immediately once you told him. Drop it and move on. It's been over a decade at this point. You're an adult with bigger issues that you have no idea are coming at you.
So, in my mind, I think all three of them were calling him dumb which basically just proves my point that Garroth is considered a dumb blonde by his peers. I could really just stop right here and I would get my point across but, no! I have more!
This wouldn't really bug me if you know...he wasn't the only blonde character in the main cast! Like, seriously? Out of the several characters you have, you choose the only blonde one to be the dumb or at least less intelligent one of the group? Sure. He's goofy and brings some lightness into the show but, anyone else could've done that. Some of you might not see anyone else being this way but, that's because you have the idea of these characters being who they are because Jess has written them this way. She could've easily written anyone else to be the goofy one. Or could've at least made Garroth the comedy relief without being an idiot. There's other ways to do that you know? Anyway...
Now before you say that I'm now just hating on Jess, I want to say I love her writing. Each character is so unique and has a perfect backstory.
SO WHY IS THE ONLY BLONDE CHARACTER FOLLOWING THE TYPICAL STEREOTYPE OF BEING A BLONDE CHARACTER?!
I know Emmalyn was blonde but, she's a ghost now and I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing her human form that often. So, I don't count it. Also, I could be grateful that Garroth isn't the mean blonde that thinks he's better than everyone else like Regina George from Mean Girls or Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter. Or is perceived as an desirable person look-wise that all his other qualities are ignored like Elle Woods (for the majority of the movie) in Legally Blonde or Cinderella who I can argue the prince only fell in love with her looks instead of her kind heart during that one night that they danced together.
But, the reason why this annoys me is because he was perfect before his character change. Let me explain.
If some of you haven't watched MCD, Garroth was known as the shy one who blushed or stuttered every other sentence and had a sensitive, kind heart with loyalty towards his friends. He wasn't dumb and was considered(maybe not the most) intelligent. He also had flaws too. Because of his sensitivity, he would have times where he would be upset with his friends. He would lock himself away or turn on them without investigating the scenario. Which, could be considered "lacking...good judgement" but, the rest of his personality overpowered that. I was so thrilled about this. Being a blonde female myself, it was so cool seeing a blonde character betrayed as something else than just dumb.
Then, Mystreet happened. The first season wasn't that bad. Yes, he was showing more confidence towards liking Aphmau, saying it out loud and showing it through his actions. I was excited at first then, season two was different. It was like a complete jump forward to what it was before. It was like he changed in a snap. He went from what I described before to what you see now. A guy who is loud, obnoxious, and a bit overly confident to the point to where it becomes cringey! (I hate using that word but there it is! That's how I feel!) His other qualities didn't go away but, I feel as if his now loud banter and annoying comments completely take away his kind heart most of the time. The worst part is that we didn't get an answer as to why he changing until so long after where they claimed it was because of Garte wanting him to act like that. I'm sorry but, Garroth is what? 29? 30? He's an adult! He can act however he wants without his father's approval! I know that sounds frightening and is easier said than done but, I don't think it's a valid explanation as to why Garroth is now coming out of his shell. Like, seriously! He's completely different!
Now, some may argue that the other blonde characters from other franchises change. I agree with you. Regina becomes nice by the end of the movie, Draco redeems himself, Elle Woods realizes that she doesn't need to get the guy of her dreams and then, values gaining skill over gaining his approval, and Cinderella and her Prince Charming do live happily ever after to what we assume they learn at this point there is more to each other than just looks and pretty outfits. (Especially in the live action version!) But you see, they redeem themselves after realizing that they made mistakes. They went forward. They made a change from being a dumb blonde to at least an average character that is given the same respect as others.
I guess Garroth is one of the most developed characters in the show but, I feel that he went from this admirable, unique character that so happened to be blonde, to the dumb jock I could say or the surfer dude. Typical of a blonde male character.
I wanted to highlight this change because, I'm sick and tired of the blonde stereotype in franchises. I don't understand why this exists. Blonde female and male characters as being put into this category because of their hair color. The way I described Garroth as what he is now isn't something I came up on my own. Wikipedia came up with those names as to what blonde males are called. The article mainly focuses on how blonde females are put into this category but they do highlight that blonde males have the same pressures. The article is called "Blonde stereotype" if you want to read it for yourself. I know it's not the most strongest source of information but, it's nice to just dip your feet into some background knowledge and examples of the stereotype.
Wikipedia also says that blondes are typically known for having "more fun" as the stereotype goes. Well, let me give ya lesson world! You sure are bringing down the fun with this stupid, old stereotype that needs to go away! It's 2019!
I also understand that other hair colors get ridiculed so, you know what? STOP WITH THE HAIR STEREOTYPING IN GENERAL! IT SUCKS! HAIR COLOR DOES NOT AFFECT SOMEONE'S PERSONALITY!
I know that hair stereotyping shouldn't be put as number one thing to fix in the world but, maybe we can dial it down? If any of you are planning to go into the entertainment business please keep that in mind. You'll make me super happy if you make a awesome blonde that isn't as Mary Sued as Captain Marvel and is treated like a normal character. You know? Like, making a character similar to Katniss Everdeen just blonde. Or Harry Potter just blonde.
So, in summary, the only thing that annoys me about Aphmau's Mystreet series is that fact that she dumbed down Garroth to the point where he is stripped away of all things that made him a unique character and is just making him follow the stereotype. That's why I write him as his old self which I'm sure some of you picked up by now. I wouldn't say I hate the character Garroth now but, I sure darn don't like him as much as I do now. I think the fact that the only line Garroth had during the recent season finally of Mystreet was him teasing Zane, ignited me to write this down and let it out.
I could go on and on about this but, I need to end it before I just go off the rails. I apologize to anyone who got offended by this. I'm not trying to change your opinion or trying to attack Jess and BluJay studios. I'm not even hating on Andy. I'm just putting my personal opinion out in front of you all because, I want to be honest about how I feel about the show. I don't want to be afraid to put my opinion out there about block characters. Literally, this is the one thing that continues to bother me about the show and I just wanted to say it.
Again, it's my personal opinion and I would love to hear your's!
I love you my foxes! Treat people sweet!
