Ch 6 -Scare-a-Thon
Ellington, Mariah, Ashley and I crammed together on the couch watching Case 39 (mostly with our eyes closed). Man! Kids can be super creepy. So much for taking a babysitting job this summer. I could totally see a kid pretending to hug me and gnawing off my neck. A devil kid in pigtails with a cute dress and a crooked smile never seemed more terrifying.
When the movie ended we just sat there in shock, as much from the movie as from overeating. Between the four of us we had polished of a large pizza, two bags of microwave popcorn, and a bag of Reisen. My stomach pouched out like Snookie's on the final season of The Jersey Shore.
"We gotta clean this up. It's time for my parents and I don't want to get a lecture about responsibility and pulling my weight." I groaned as I made the first move to get off the couch.
I grabbed a fresh garbage bin from under the kitchen sink and Mariah and Ashley started cramming it full. I gave Ellington the job of vacuuming up the scattered popcorn that flew across the room during the jump scares (and let's face it, that movie has a ton!).
When everything was back to normal I felt like crawling in bed. Bad idea in the evening. If I slept now I'd be up all night. I yawned and so did everyone else. Then Ellington had a brilliant idea. "Let's go down to the park with your video camera and film a short scary scene of our own. You can put it on your YouTube show."
Everyone started squealing and planning a plot. I have to admit I got sucked in. We ran to my room and put on slutty clothes and thick makeup. It wasn't dark yet so we were rushing to beat the light. Ashley called Lana and Jackie and told them to meet us there and to dress casual hooker. Lana asked what that meant and Ashley said "just be you Lana, you already dress casual hooker". We burst into rolling laughter.
I packed my camera, tripod, and the shoes from the dance into a backpack and off we went. Marching down the late afternoon street like girls going to work the corners. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my waving tree. With the girls around I felt pretty bold. I didn't say anything because who wants people to know they hallucinate seeing tall, dark, possibly sexy tree men, but I did send a wave and blew a kiss.
When we got to the park Jackie and Lana were waiting. Jackie looked more like a librarian off hours than a sexy girl and we gave her the role of the geek. The film would be a single scene of mean sexy girls ridiculing a normal nice girl and chasing her into the woods where she ends up being cornered by a killer. The mean girls end up saving her because they don't want anyone else messing with their fun target.
We were giddy with excitement and decided if this went well we could make it a weekly installment. It seemed way cooler than being in an airband.
"Lemon, you should be the lead mean sexy girl. You look amazing and it's your show so people will relate".
Ashley was always making me feel good. I smiled and nodded, glad I didn't have to exert my authority to be lead like I was planning.
I put Jackie on the swing swaying and smiling like she was just enjoying a nice solitary evening in the park. Then the rest of us walked into the frame laughing and pushing each other until we see Jackie. We make a bee line for her and start pushing her around kicking her off the swing. We form a circle around her and play a bit of hot potato shoving her around the circle.
She breaks out of the circle and runs into the woods. We're all so caught up in our roles we run after her. My feet argue so I kick off my shoes. Soon our group is running in all directions and I realize no one is running the camera and it's still set up by the swing. Ugh.
I make way back to where I left my shoes and they aren't there. I take a couple of minutes looking for them and realize it's starting to get dark. After a bit I'm getting frustrated about the shoes and that the girls are screeching having a blast chasing Jackie through the small patch of woods like a Blair Witch scene and I'm standing alone looking for shoes!
I stomp back to the swings and move the tripod with the camera to just inside the tree line. That way the woods look deep and the camera will pick up anything in the general middle section. As I'm checking the quality of the scene at dusk through the viewfinder I see Jackie with her back to a tree. Her face looks panicked and she isn't moving a muscle. Man! She may have potential to be an actress some day. She looks panicked!!
I'm about to call out to round everyone back up when I see a dark arm reach around the tree and grab her. There's a blur and I lift my eyes away from the viewfinder. It's too far to see anything and I put my eye back on the camera. Nothing. The tree is blank except for a swipe of bark missing. Jackie must have ran.
I can almost make out a blur of black waving in the distance. My spine feels crawly and I take my eye away from the camera. I call the girls back at top octave. Slowly they emerge, out of breath and laughing. Mariah has a trickle of blood on her forehead and Ashley's hair looks like she survived a hurricane force windstorm.
"What the heck, we can't film you guys like that! Ashley your hair is standing up and Mariah is bleeding. That wasn't in the script. Let's cut for today. We can pick up at the killer scene tomorrow. It's getting too dark to film anyway. Where's Jackie?"
Everyone looked at each other and around the area. She didn't come back with the girls. Somehow the woods seemed creepy now that the light from the sun was almost gone. (It must have been that creepy scary movie). We call out her name and wait almost three minutes. Before I announced we leave her.
"She looked like she was really getting into it. Some actresses really have to play the part, become the character to nail it. She's probably still in character."
The girls looked at me like I was nuts. But I know acting. Being my own show host I've done research!! Ashley was shaking her head and looking like a mom about to go on a rant.
"Lemon. We can't leave her in the woods. What if she twisted an ankle or fell in a well? We've got to look for her. Or at least call her phone!"
Ashley never disagreed with me so I was shocked. But if she was upset I knew it was important to her. I was a good friend, and decided I could be on board with her crazy plan.
"Ok Ashley. You have a point. Let's call her phone and take a quick look around. We can use the camera for light."
Calling Ashley's phone was a bust. She didn't answer. We were going to have to comb through the woods in the dark. Mariah grabbed Ellington's arm and Lana grabbed Ashley's. I held the camera and turned on the light. Somehow, after a scary movie this seemed less fun. I started humming a few bars of 'Can't be Tamed' by Miley to calm my jiggly nerves.
I also hit the record button. Who knows, maybe there really are creepy things in the woods at night. Slowly we started walking in, calling Jackie's name.

Going into the woods at night seems like a great idea.
By the way, has anyone seen Jackie?
PS- I figured out the bold again!!! Yay!!!
