Caleb comes back
My eyes fluttered open, squinting as they were met with the harsh morning sun. I yawned as I rolled over and stretched my arm out to curl it around Tom's waist. Instead, my skin collided with the cold bedsheets. I opened my eyes fully and sighed as I was alone in the bed, the only other presence being Tessa lying across my feet. It had been almost a month and a half since Tom had left for LA, and yet I still woke up, expecting him to be there. I gulped, tears pricking my eyes as I leant down and pressed my nose against Tom's pillow. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, breathing in the familiar scent of my fiancé's cologne and shampoo. I sat up again, sighing as Tessa stood up and shifted so that she was sat on my lap.
"What are we going to do without your daddy, huh?" I smiled gently at her, scratching behind her grey ear. Tessa let out a huff, making me smile as I shifted my legs from underneath her and stood from the bed. I grabbed one of the white dress shirts that Tom had left behind before putting it on and buttoning it up, once again drowning me in the scent of Tom's cologne. And I loved it. I held the crisp white material up to my nose as I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a cup of coffee. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, making me look up as my eyebrows furrowed. I looked at my phone, checking the text that Harrison had sent me that told me that he was coming over at noon. It was only nine, so I knew that it couldn't be him. I gulped, putting my coffee onto the island before heading around the kitchen counters and to the door. I opened it and my eyes widened. I gulped, now majorly regretting my decision to not get properly dressed as I saw who was stood on the doorstep: Caleb.
"Hey." He smiled, his hands in his jacket pockets. I gulped, unable to speak as he looked at my attire. His eyes widened.
"O-oh, sorry, I didn't realise that you'd...um...be wearing so little." He chuckled. I looked down and nodded, trying my hardest to pull Tom's shirt down enough to cover my underwear.
"That's because it's early, and the only person that I'm seeing today is Harrison-Caleb, what are you doing here?" I scoffed, looking back at him.
"I heard that you and Tom had moved back to town permanently, and I heard that Tom had flown out to LA for his most recent movie, so I thought that you'd like some company." He shrugged. I raised my eyebrow, suddenly becoming very suspicious of why the man was here. Maybe he was figuring that since I'd cheated on him with Tom, I'd do the same to Tom with him.
"I cheated on you, Caleb, with the guy that I'm now engaged to, why would you want to keep me company?" I gulped. He sighed and looked down.
"Look, Y/N, I believe in second chances, even when someone throws away my trust like you did." He nodded. My eyes wavered at his words.
"Look, Caleb, I just-."
"Please, Y/N? I'd feel so much better knowing that things are going well for you." He smiled. I sighed, hesitantly returning it as I stepped to the side and let him in. He looked around the apartment, his eyebrows raised.
"Tom treats you well, huh." He chuckled. I raised my eyebrow.
"For your information, Tom bought this place for both of us, with money earned by both of us." I nodded.
"Sure he did. Did he buy that engagement ring with your money as well?" he scoffed. My eyes widened.
"It was Tom's grandmother's, so neither of us bought it. Now, you have two options, either change your attitude or get out of my apartment." I nodded, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Sorry, sorry. I just had a really hard time after our break-up." He mumbled. I sighed.
"I, um...I'm sorry to hear that." I nodded. He returned it and gave me a small smile as he sat on the sofa, an awkward silence filling the air.
"U-um, let me get dressed, and then we can talk, okay?" I asked.
"Sure. Hey, can I pet your dog?" he chuckled, looking at Tessa. I gulped.
"I-I wouldn't. She's Tom's dog, she won't appreciate a strange man touching her." I nodded.
"I'm hardly a strange man." He scoffed.
"That's debatable." I mumbled under my breath as I headed down the hallway and into Tom and I's bedroom.
"Do you want coffee, Caleb?" I asked, standing in the kitchen as I got two mugs out.
"Please." He nodded. I returned it and sighed, not wanting to be in the position where I was making my asshole-of-an-ex coffee, but I couldn't just kick him out. Suddenly, I heard Tessa start to growl, making me look over to see Caleb trying to pet her.
"Tess, here, girl." I beckoned, making the grey dog happily walk over to me and sit by my feet.
"I did warn you not to touch her." I stated as I poured out the coffees.
"She's a cutie. You know that I can't help myself around cute girls." He tried to flirt. I rolled my eyes slightly, though not enough to let him see the action.
"Speaking of cute girls, I thought that you couldn't look any better than you did in that shirt before, but damn." He smirked. My eyes widened and I looked at him.
"Fucking excuse me?" I scoffed. His eyes widened slightly.
"What, Y/N? I'm trying to compliment you, fucking take it." He returned the scoff.
"No, Caleb, what you're doing is shamelessly flirting with the ex-girlfriend that broke up with you years ago and is now engaged." I spat. He sighed.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to flirt, I was just trying to be friendly." He shrugged. I looked at him.
"Caleb, I have to ask, what exactly were you hoping to get out of reaching out to me again? Another shot at our relationship? Because I accept the fact that I was the cause for it ending, but that doesn't mean that you showing up suddenly, at the apartment that I share with my future husband, is going to make me realise that I made some huge mistake and beg for you to take me back." I shook my head.
"Y/N, no, genuinely all that I wanted from this was a friendship with you. We didn't exactly end well, and I've always wanted to be friends. So, I figured that I may as well go for it." He shrugged. I sighed, still not fully believing him as I took the mugs and gave him one.
"Alright then. Let's talk." I nodded, him giving me a smile as we sat down on the sofa.
Harrison and I sat on my sofa, my legs over Harrison's lap and Tessa asleep by my legs as we watched TV.
"So, how you dealing with Tom being away?" Harrison asked, looking at me. I sighed as I popped a piece of popcorn into my mouth.
"I'm doing okay so far, I guess that I'm used to him being away now." I mumbled.
"Yeah, but it's the first time that he's away as your fiancé." He replied. I shrugged and looked down, tears pricking my eyes.
"I don't want to think about it, Haz." I mumbled. He nodded and gave me a sympathetic smile, making me give him a thankful one as he placed his hand on my knee and rubbed it soothingly.
"Weird thing, though, guess who came by earlier." I spoke.
"Who?" he asked, watching the movie that was playing.
"Caleb." I admitted. Harrison's eyes widened and he looked at me.
"As in your ex-boyfriend, Caleb?" he scoffed. I nodded, making him shift on the sofa so that he was completely facing me.
"What the fuck?" he scoffed again.
"I know, right? He showed up first thing this morning, which was made worse by the fact that I was only in one of Tom's shirts and my underwear." I spoke.
"He was probably counting on that." He mumbled, making me sigh.
"He was...weird. I mean, he was fucking rude for starters, he basically accused me of being a gold digger." I nodded, Harrison's eyes widening further.
"He mentioned that he knew that Tom is in LA, and then he made a comment about second chances, but then conveniently threw in the fact that I'd misused his trust. The whole thing was weird." I sighed.
"Sounds it." He nodded. I looked at him.
"You don't think that...you know...he's going to try and hook up with me, do you?" I gulped.
"He knows that you're getting married, Y/N." Harrison scoffed.
"He also knows that I cheated on him. Maybe he thinks that I'll cheat on Tom with him." I sighed.
"I don't know, Y/N. Maybe just see what happens and go with it, maybe he was just being a nice guy and checking up on you." He shrugged, grabbing a handful of popcorn and stuffing it into his mouth.
"I don't know, Haz. I never told you or Tom this since you two definitely would have beaten the shit out of him, but there were times in our relationship where he was a real asshole." I scoffed. Harrison looked at me.
"I swear to god, if he hit you, I'm never going to stop beating him up." He spoke with a clenched jaw, shaking his head.
"No, no, nothing physical, Haz, just, I don't know. Little digs about my weight, or little rude remarks, basically what he did at that party at Sam's apartment where I introduced him to Tom, and what he did when he came over today. Shows me that he hasn't really changed, and that's what makes me worry about his intentions." I gulped. Harrison returned it and nodded.
"You talked to Tom about this?" he asked.
"Are you serious? Of course not, he'll just get super worried and paranoid that my ex-boyfriend came by and knows that I'm alone in the apartment most of the time." I shook my head.
"Yeah, but it'll also look suspicious if you don't tell him. You're not doing anything wrong, so what's the harm in telling him?" Harrison shrugged. I sighed and looked down, still not sure what to do.
