Witchcraft has been seen in the media as directly linked to satanism or worshiping the devil. This is far from the truth. Witchcraft is not a religion (for most witches), but it is a practice. It is practiced the same as knitting or yoga in the sense that it can be as casual or as serious as you take it to be. This is not to say that you cannot make mistakes that have consequences, but it does mean that it is not a religion or linked to worship.

     Now, a common sign for witchcraft/wiccanism/paganism is the pentacle (the 5-point star with a circle around it). Often in media, this is used as a sign not only to indicate witchcraft (which is accurate), but to indicate evil as well. This is the opposite of the truth. The pentacle's five points stand for the elements- Water, earth, air, fire, and spirit. It symbolizes protection, grounding, and stabilization.

"Correct" witchcraft

Now, one of the most common misconceptions is that there is one definite way to practice witchcraft. This is not true. There is no "wrong" or "right" way to practice. There are thousands of different ways to do any spell, and it is best to make each spell personalized to you so it works best. All of the spells I use can have herbs added, replaced, or removed entirely and work about the same or even better. Witchcraft is about finding your own path while also making sure not to appropriate from any cultures.

The three-fold rule is a wiccan principle stating that whatever energy you give out comes back three times. This means that hexes alledgedly come back to you three times worse. This is not true. Everyone has different views on this, but the most commonly accepted belief is that if you have protections set up against your hex backfiring or being returned, then you are fine. Once again, this is different for everyone, but don't let this stop you from hexing someone who deserves it (when you are educated, willing, and ready).
