Beginnings

(A/N: Xandra_Dee Just got inspired again! This is just a few snapshots of Lila/Gavin's early relationship. I think it would be cute to explore the dynamic of their relationship! ALSO THE SONG I LINKED OMG ITS SO GOOD!!! JAMES ARTHUR ACC COMES OUT WITH THE BEST MUSIC- IVE LITERALLY BEEN LISTENING ON LOOP. THE CHORUS IS SO CATCHY AND ITS PERFECTTTT FOR GAVIN/LILA OR EVEN LUCIEN/AZUSA)

She stared at him, watching the way his brown bangs fell into his face, the way his golden eyes would stray to the window every so often and the way his pen drummed against his desk rhythmically.

She would be lying if she said this was the first time she was observing him, it had been 3 months since the... incident.

She recalled the way he had come to her rescue without wanting anything in return. They never spoke about it after that but... she felt an inexplicable interest in him since that day.

She wanted to know more about him, she wanted to know what made him tick. Its true that he was known as the class delinquent and often got into fights, he always had some kind of bruise or cut on his face. But he was intriguing.

"Lila! Pay attention" The teacher snapped, looking rather frustrated at her.

Lila snapped out of her reverie, face heating up as she felt his eyes on her. "Sorry" She apologised meekly, looking back down at her book.

Was he still looking at her? Oh gods, how embarrassing. He probably thought her a weirdo...

'Why do I care so much about what he thinks about me?' She asked herself internally, bowing her head so her hair fell over her red face. It was so unlike her to be so damn shy and flustered.

Her best friend Kiki looked over at her with a knowing smile, wiggling her eyebrows and discreetly gesturing towards Gavin. Lila told Kiki about Gavin saving her from the thief... just not HOW he saved her, and now Kiki made it her mission to tease Lila about Gavin everyday.

"May I go to the nurses office? I'm not feeling so well" Lila put her hand up, lying to get out of the room. She had to sort herself out, she couldn't even think straight.

"Fine. Gavin, escort her to the office. And come straight back" The teacher said, fixing the tall boy with a small glare.

Her eyes widened, her heart beat picking up. What? Why him of all people? The very person she wanted to get away from! So why was she kinda maybe pleased that the teacher chose him?

Gavin said nothing, only standing up and leaving the room without even giving her a backwards glance. Lila picked up her belongings and left the classroom, gasping as she walked into him by accident.

"S-Sorry" She cleared her throat, quickly stepping backwards and looking up at him. He was rather tall, compared to her anyway.

"Lets go" He said simply, shoving his hands in his pockets and walking in the direction of the office.

Lila nodded, speed walking to fall in step with him. It was proving difficult since he had much larger strides. They walked in silence, and she was beginning to get desperate for some sort of rescue from the awkwardness.

"By the way, I never got to thank you. For saving me that is" She murmured, looking down at her feet and pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose as they slid down.

"S'okay. Dont mention it" Gavin responded, his tone almost bored.

He seemed to be staring into every classroom as they walked past, and she wondered who he was searching for.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" Lila asked, rather surprised at her own bluntness. Even though her heart was beating out of her chest, she was genuinely curious to know more about him. She found it surprisingly easy to speak to him.

Gavin paused and Lila was SURE he had blushed. "Why?" He asked sharply, his jaw clenching slightly.

"You're looking for someone" Lila shrugged, looking up at him.

"No, I'm not" He pulled his eyes away from the classroom windows, looking back at Lila.

"Liar" Lila smirked, her hazel eyes meeting his golden ones.

Gavin was rather taken aback by her comment and flippant attitude. She wasn't... scared of him? Why? Everyone was scared of him, and they had good reason too. He was involved with gangs and the rest of it. So why was this girl so fine talking to him?

"I don't have a girlfriend, that's all I'm saying" He murmured, his cheeks tinting pink once more as his bangs fell into his eyes. "Anyway why do you care? Arent you afraid I'm going to blackmail you or something? Threaten to steal your lunch money?"

"Lunch money? Pft, you can try" Lila snorted, shaking her head.

"You do remember that I saved you from being killed right?"

"Exactly. You're not as bad as everyone thinks you are, I can tell" she smiled softly, watching as his eyes widened at her words.

"Youre wrong. I am as bad as everyone thinks I am" Gavin retorted, almost annoyed at her for suggesting otherwise.

Why did she seem to think he was good? He wasn't... he couldn't even save the one person that meant everything to him.

"I don't think so. You saved me, that counts for something. Right?" She smiled brightly, turning the corner with him.

"That was one time. Doesn't mean I'm a good guy" He argued, a frown on his face. "Dont be so naive"

"You may not think you're a good guy but I know you are" Lila said finally, pausing outside the nurses office which they had arrived at. "Thank you for walking me but I can take it from here. Take care of yourself" She gave him one more fleeting smile over her shoulder before disappearing into the office.

He watched her enter the office in silence, mind reeling. Was she being real? Why was she saying all this to him? She didn't owe him anything. And yet she had smiled so sincerely, he couldn't help but hope her words were true.

What a strange girl...

•••♡♡♡•••

Kiki pushed her forwards, giggling as Lila stumbled into Gavin. Lila blushed, quickly pulling away once more and looking up at him. Why was she always crashing into him?

"You again?" Gavin raised his eyebrows, confused as to why Lila seemed to be so on edge.

It had been almost a month since the nurse office incident and although they spoke more frequently, Gavin and Lila were far from friends. More like... amicable acquaintances.

"Yes, me again" Lila huffed, rather offended at his tone of voice. "Count yourself lucky that its me crashing into you"

"Lucky?" Gavin smirked, eyes alight with mischief. "You almost flattened me"

"Shut up!" Lila snapped, her face flaming. She wasn't that big!

"What do you want then? I'm a little busy right now" He asked, his eyes flitting around the playground in search of someone.

Probably that brunette girl 2 years younger than them who he seemed to like. Lila saw the way he looked at her, the way he'd go out of his way just to be near her. Her heart gave a melancholy twang at the thought.

"Seriously? Fine, nevermind. Have fun doing whatever you were doing" Lila grumbled, turning around to walk away before he grabbed her wrist.

"Sorry" Gavin apologised sheepishly, feeling bad for turning her away. "Go on?"

Lila was sure he could feel the heat emanating from her body. Butterflies fluttered wildly in her stomach as she looked down at his hand. Could he feel the electricity that she felt when he touched her?

"U-Um..." She coughed, trying to find the right words. "Well..."

"What?" Gavin asked, oblivious to her inner turmoil.

"W-Will you go out on a date with me?" Lila swallowed, struggling to meet his eyes as she held her breath.

Whatever he was expecting, it wasn't that. Gavin looked rather floored, his jaw clenching and then unclenching. What?

"Are you joking?" He asked bluntly, his eyebrows furrowing as his eyes narrowed. Why on earth would she ask him out? She didn't even know him, and he didn't know her. Sure, they spoke and he had saved her life that one time but he didn't think it meant that much.

"No!" Lila blushed harder, refusing the urge to run away. God, why was this so hard? She wanted him to know how she felt about him but she found it so difficult to get the right words out. "I like you..."

His eyes widened at the short brunette, tensing slightly. She actually had feelings for him?

"Why?" He demanded, not knowing how to respond. It sounded insensitive but Gavin was so shocked that she had harboured feelings for him all this time. He felt bad... He didn't exactly feel the same way. He already had feelings for someone else.

"Why do I like you?" Lila asked, watching as he nodded silently. "Well, you did save my life"

"And I told you that it doesn't make me a good guy. I told you not to be so naive, I'm not good for you" Gavin glared at her, shaking his head.

Lila huffed, staring up at him with irritation. Was this guy serious? She just confessed to him and he was now fighting her feelings? Didnt he know how much SHE had fought her own feelings already?! If only it were that easy to get over someone!

"I think I can decide whats good for me and what isn't" She scoffed, her glasses flashing slightly in the morning sun. "Besides, thats not the only reason. You... intrigue me. Yes, you're a juvenile delinquent" She said bluntly, ignoring the way he glared at her. "But... you have a good heart. I can tell. You care about people close to you so much. The way you go out of your way to protect Shaw and Minor, I think its very sweet"

"I-"

"Gavin, will you go out on a date with me? Yes or no?" Lila interrupted him, crossing her arms. She just wanted an answer. "I have feelings for you, I don't care what you think about yourself. I believe you're a good person. I fell for you in spite of who you are"

Gavin felt his world come to a standstill, she was really serious about liking him. How was he to respond? He didn't like her back but... he felt bad.

Tch, it should be easy for him to reject her. He was breaking jaws every other day so why was it so hard for him to break her heart? Maybe it was the way she gazed up at him with so much hope in her eyes, the tenderness she held for him in those big brown irises had him floored.

"But I already li-"

"I know" She smiled sadly, looking up at him. She knew all about the underclassman he had feelings for. Lila had caught him staring at her from afar many times, but she still wanted to take him out. Just once. Lila didn't know whether it was to try and get over him or if she just wanted to know how it felt to be cherished. She wanted to know what it felt like, just this once.

"And you still want to go on a date with me?" He was so confused, his cheeks tinting pink as she admitted that she knew he had feelings for that girl. The one that played piano, she had saved him. Her light had given him something to fight for the day he had fallen off the roof.

Lila nodded hopefully, gnawing on her lip anxiously. She knew it was a strange request, settling for a guy who didn't even like her back? But he was... worth it. Even if it was only one date, he was worth it.

"Fine"

"S-Seriously?" Her eyes widened as he agreed, her chest swelling with happiness. Did he really just agree to her strange request?

"This Saturday, lunch time? We can go to the ramen shop" Gavin cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly as he couldn't meet her eyes either.

"Great! I'll meet you there. Thank you" She beamed, launching forward to envelope him into a hug.

He blushed, he wasn't used to a female being so... excited to be around him. Let alone hugging him like this. She was shorter than him, her arms wrapping around his torso tightly. He awkwardly patted her back, not knowing how to respond.

"No worries..."

•••♡♡♡•••

"Wow um... you look nice"

Lila chuckled softly as she accepted the cute bouquet of lavender he had gotten for her. Very unorthodox but it was all him. And that was all she cared about. The way he seemed to blush awkwardly, not knowing how to take her on a date, got her heart beating just that much faster.

"Thank you. Shall we go in?" She beamed, holding his hand and leading him into the shop.

She had put in some extra effort into dressing up today, even if they were only going to a ramen shop. She sported a pretty violet coloured dress, her hair braided with little blue flowers. She had done it herself after practising all night, watching YouTube tutorials.

Gavin gasped as she led him in excitedly, taking a seat at the back of the restaurant opposite her. He watched her eagerly read through the menu, and the way she seemed to constantly hitch up her glasses. It was cute.

"You like spicy food right? How about this then?"

"How do you know I like spicy food?" He asked, rather surprised she knew such a small detail about him.

Lila smiled, shrugging. "I've seen you and Minor going to the convenience store just to buy the extra hot chilli noodles for lunch. I figured that you prefer spicy food"

Wow, she actually observed him in that much detail? It still shocked him that she had feelings for him. She deserved someone who actually had feelings for her too, no? But she seemed to be okay with going on a date with him despite his feelings for someone else. What a strange girl...

Lila ordered for them both, making small talk with him as they waited for the food to come.

"So do you have a big family? Any siblings?"

Gavin tensed up visibly at the mention of his family, his fist clenching under the table. "Not really... Just me and my younger brother"

Lila noticed his discomfort and immediately dropped the subject, asking him about his favourite pass times and subject at school. She laughed loudly as he admitted he hated all his subjects, save for sports.

"Hey, you play basketball and football right?"

"Mhm... I couldn't choose which I liked better so I play both" Gavin admitted, his eyes moving to the two steaming bowls of ramen places in front of them. His stomach gave a growl and he cleared his throat, apologising.

She giggled, shaking her head. "I want to see you play someday"

"I don't see why not, they're open for everyone. You can come and watch, if you'd like" He offered, picking up his chopsticks and also passing her a pair.

"I think I'd really like that, actually. Think I could make you a homemade banner and cheer you on?"

Gavin almost choked on his ramen as she said this, looking up at her incredulously. "You're not serious, are you?"

"Why not? Unless you have a big bad reputation to uphold?" She grinned teasingly, leaning forward before also eating her ramen.

"What? No. Its just weird if you started cheering me on like that" He lied, cheeks reddening again as he ate his ramen to avoid speaking once more.

"You're so cute" Lila smiled offhandedly, watching him as he ate his noodles.

He really did make her heart beat faster, regardless of what he was doing. This man would be the end of her, she could tell. He was so handsome too, she was shocked that he hadn't be asked out before. Maybe it was because everyone was so intimidated by him. She couldn't understand why though, he reminded her of a puppy.

"Hurry up and eat" He responded gruffly, his face flaming as he looked away from her. Cute? Since when was he cute? She wasn't serious, was she?

Lila smiled, beginning to eat her food happily. She was so happy after so long, he really did make her day.

Once they had finished up paying, Gavin pulled out her chair like the (surprising) gentleman he was.

"You go on, I want to get some ramen to eat later on tonight. I'll meet you outside" Lila lied, smiling at him.

Gavin simply nodded, leaving the shop. She took a deep breath, taking out a small notepad and pen from her bag. She knew it was stupid but she couldn't help it. She had heard that this shop was special.

She scribbled a small note onto the piece of paper, nibbling on the end of her pen slightly before pinning the note onto the special message board at the front of the shop.

"You done?" Gavin called, re-entering the shop once more and standing in the doorway.

"Yep! I decided to make my own food tonight instead" Lila quickly stuffed the paper and pen back into her bag, skipping out to join him as they began their walk back home.

•••♡♡♡•••

"Ow, ow, ow, brain freeze" Gavin grumbled, pulling away from the drink to hold his head.

Lila laughed, flicking his forehead playfully. "Told you to slow down"

"Shut up" He huffed, flicking her forehead back. "I couldn't help myself, its surprisingly good"

"I told you that you wouldn't regret coming! I did my research on this place" Lila said proudly, leaning forward to sip on the drink.

This was their... 13th date? She smiled as he began drinking the milkshake once more, he was trying so hard to seem cool but really he was a cinnamon roll.

Don't ask her how they ended up going on 13 dates already, she was just as shocked. Everytime she asked him out, she was ready to be rejected. She was ready for him to tell her that it was over, and he didn't want to go out with her anymore. But everytime he had shocked her and agreed to go. She felt like she was tempting fate, like she was too happy. She had never known to be this happy before, it was so strange. He made her feel so carefree, it was amazing.

Of course she was aware he still didn't have feelings for her... But that didn't stop her. Call her greedy but she couldn't help herself. She wanted to make the most out of this, she wanted to take him out and feel like his special someone while it lasted.

Over the last few weeks, he had warmed up to her much more. Of course he was still the big bad bully everyone knew him to be, but in her eyes he had softened up much more. For starters, he wasn't so stoic anymore. He actually reacted and initiated conversation. He didn't awkwardly pat her on the back, he actually hugged her back. He didn't tense up everytime she tried to hold his hand.

Was she his girlfriend? Unfortunately he had made it clear that these dates were only casual. But then again, that was enough for her. She didn't care if it was "casual" dating. She got him to herself for a whole day and thats all that mattered.

"Yeah yeah, I guess its pretty nice. I've never been to an ice skating show before" He mused, looking around at the large Hall they were seated in. They were still waiting for the show to start and so decided to get some food to spend their time.

"Me either. But there's a first time for everything, hm?" She beamed, before letting out a sneeze.

Gavin snickered, looking over at her. "You sound like an elephant. I thought girls were meant to sneeze all dainty like"

"I'll punch you all dainty like, if you want" She grumbled before sneezing again.

"...Are you okay?" He asked hesitantly, eyebrows furrowed with concern as he stopped drinking to look up at her.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a bit cold. Its an ice show afterall" She smiled, shrugging.

"Is it okay for you to he drinking such a cold drink then? Wouldn't a hot chocolate be better?"

"Are you just trying to take it for yourself? Absolutely not, I want to drink my milkshake!" She pouted, sipping on the drink.

Gavin rolled his eyes, shrugging off his hoodie and draping it over her shoulders. "Idiot"

Lila blushed at how close he leaned to give her his hoodie, coughing as she swallowed her drink a little too fast.

"No more" Gavin huffed, pulling the straw away from her lips. "Sneezing and coughing? You're getting a cold"

He was completely oblivious to the fact that she was suffering from a coughing fit due to him.

"No! Pleaseeee, I'll wrap up tighter, I promise. I really want the milkshake" She pleaded, slotting her arms through his hoodie and slipping it on.

It smelt just like him, she smiled to herself. She hugged it tighter to her frame, not even caring as Gavin watched her look so pleased.

"Fine. But I'm buying you a hot chocolate after to warm up" Gavin glared at her, pushing the glass towards her again.

"Yay, thank you" She grinned, leaning forward to sip on the drink again just as he did.

•••♡♡♡•••

Lila waved from where she was sat on the bleachers, grinning happily as she watched Gavin walk onto the field. He spotted her and his cheeks went a little red before he reluctantly waved back.

It was her first time at one of his games, and she was so excited to see him play. Gavin wasn't used to having people come to watch HIM so seeing her at the edge of her seat, looking so hopeful had his blood roaring in his ears. Why did she continue to like him so much?

She watched as the team huddled together, and the other schools team walked onto the pitch.

4 months... it had been 4 months since they began going on dates. And 7 since she had first noticed him. It was crazy how fast time flew when she was happy. He still got her heart beating faster than adrenalin, even after this long.

The fear of him rejecting her was still present, just less... prominent. Still he didn't acknowledge her as his girlfriend, and she knew he probably liked that girl still. She tended to dance around the topic of his feelings, she didn't want to ruin the bubble she was in. She wanted to believe he was hers, even if it was selfish.

Gavin on the other hand... He didn't really know what to feel at this point. On the one hand there was MC who he had fell for... literally. But then there was Lila who had come along and destroyed every preconception and concern he had. She didn't hate him like everyone, in fact she seemed to like him unconditionally.

He was sure he would break it off after one date but he couldn't stop himself from accepting every time she'd ask. There was something magnetic about her, the way she wasn't afraid of having feelings for him. She made it known to him and everyone else, she wasn't shy about asking him out and he couldn't help but find her so interesting.

He... liked the way she made him feel. She made him forget about his guilt temporarily, she gave him hope that maybe he wasn't a horrible person. Maybe it wasn't all his fault that his mother-

"Go, go, go!" The captain shouted as the referee blew the whistle to signal the start of the game.

Gavin began running, his thoughts disappearing as he got his game on. Occasionally his eyes would drift to Lila, trying to keep the smile off his face as she cheered him on.

"Go, Gavin!" She cheered, unashamed of the strange glances she was getting. She didn't care what people thought about her.

His hair whipped around in the wind as he ran through the field, shouting at his teammates to pass him the ball. His jaw set as he caught the ball, running towards the goal posts and easily avoiding the other team as they lunged for him. His lean and lithe figure allowed him to dodge the much bulkier opposition, his eyes ablaze with determination.

"Yes!" Lila jumped up happily as he scored, cheering loudly. She gave him a thumbs up, grinning as he looked over at her and winked playfully.

The game continued to play out, Lila watching eagerly as he ran through the pitch. He was so good! Of course there were moments where she almost ran down to the pitch, watching Gavin be ambushed by the other team. But then he'd reappear moments later, acting like it was nothing. It was so exciting to watch him! Who knew football was so intense?

The referee blew the whistle and their school cheered, Loveland high had won. Gavin grinned at his team, laughing at something the captain said.

Lila smiled, her heart warming at the happy look on his face. She loved the way his face lit up, it was so cute. Her heart then skipped a beat as he looked over at her and began walking towards the bleachers.

"Congratulations" She smiled brightly as he took a seat next to her on the bleachers.

He was red in the face and panting from exhaustion, his hair sticking to his forehead with sweat. She simply smiled and pulled a water bottle out of her bag to hand him.

"Thanks" He breathed, taking the bottle and almost downing the entire thing in one go. She watched his Adams apple bob and the way the water ran down his chin in his rush to rehydrate, blushing darkly. Why did he look so... attractive?

"That was so exciting to watch! I enjoyed it. Thanks for inviting me" Lila smiled, almost shyly as he began drying his face with a towel.

"No worries" He said, his chest heaving as he finally began to catch his breath. "Say... want to get out of here?"

"Where do you want to go?" She asked, her stomach fluttering as he stood up and offered her his hand.

"Dunno. Just somewhere" He said simply, smiling as she took his hand and stood up too.

"I'm down with going somewhere with you" She grinned, picking up her belongings. 'I'm fine to go anywhere with you' She thought, following him.

Gavin lead her down the bleachers, thinking about where he'd like to take her. To be honest, he was just happy to spend time with her. She never failed to amuse him, afterall.

"Lila!"

They both turned to see one of their classmates, James, running up to them. They were in the shade of the bleachers when James finally reached them.

"James?" Lila smiled pleasantly, she was friendly with his family. Lila actually tutored his younger sister so they knew each other well.

"You left this at my house, here" James handed her the scrunchie she had indeed left in his house the last time she had visited.

"Oh thank you, I was wondering where it went" Lila smiled brightly.

Gavin watched the interaction, his eyes narrowing slightly. Who was this guy? And why was Lila at his house?

"Always losing things, hm? Come over again, okay? Mum said she'll make you your favourite food" James smiled fondly, ruffling Lila's hair. "Take care. I'll see you around"

Lila nodded and waved him goodbye, looking down at the scrunchie and not realising as Gavin's jaw had set with petulance.

"Who is that?"

"James... he's literally in our class. How do you not know him?" Lila laughed, shaking her head.

"No I mean, who is he to you?" Gavin questioned, his face rather solemn. Why was it bothering him so much? It wasn't like she was his girlfriend. He had told her from the start these were just casual dates, nothing more or less. So why did he feel like this?

"A classmate. Duh" Lila shrugged playfully, smiling up at him as she tied her hair into a ponytail with the scrunchie.

"Why were you at his house then?" Gavin asked, eyebrows furrowing. His fist clenched slightly at the thought of Lila being so close to another guy, going to his house and meeting his parents.

"Why? Are you jealous?" She joked, not even registering the way he was sulking. She did realise as he stopped walking though, looking back at him with concern.

"Gavin? What happ-Mhm" Her eyes widened as all of a sudden, his lips were on hers.

Her heart rate accelerated as she stared up at him, heat radiating from her face. Was this really happening?! Her eyes fluttered closed as he kissed her harder, his hand going to hold the back of her head and the other resting on her waist. Lila wrapped her arms around him, on her tiptoes to reach his lips.

He pulled away after a while, his face just as red as hers. A small smile graced his lips, his hair falling into his eyes once more.

"I- What was that about?" Lila resisted the urge to hide her face. The euphoria she felt was undescribable, she felt like she was floating. That was her first kiss...

"Just felt like it" Gavin said simply, letting go of her and shoving his hands into the pocket of his joggers.

"W-What? Gavin!" She called, running after him as he began walking away. "You can't just kiss me and pretend like it didn't happen!"

"What kiss?" He smirked over his shoulder.

"Hey! Thats not fair" She huffed, falling in step with him and slipping her small hand into his much larger one casually. She loved the way they fit so well together. "What was that kiss?"

"The answer to your question" He was referring to the inquiry about whether he was jealous of course.

Her eyes widened, was he really jealous? "D-Do you like me too?"

"Ahem... I'm in the mood for ramen. You?" He dodged her question, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly as his cheeks reddened.

Lila smiled widely, squeezing his hand happily. "Sure" She said simply, already knowing his answer. He didn't need to say yes, his actions gave it away. And she couldn't be happier.
