Counting Nightmares
Story time!
So I had a weird experience. I can conclude I had four dreams/nightmares in the span of one night.
The first nightmare, I can't remember. But it was scary enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. I think, 'Oh. Just a nightmare. Well, I'm going back to sleep now.' And I do.
Then...I don't know, suddenly I could feel a landscape forming in my head, and I was back in the dream world. Everything was empty. It was like staring into a white void. One of my classmates was there a little ways behind me, lying on the ground, looking unconscious. He wakes up and reaches out to me, but I ignore him. I didn't really like the guy.
I'm wandering the emptiness, and then I suddenly wake up again.
'Right,' I think. 'Two dreams. This better not happen again.' And I sleep. And I dream. I can't recall what I dreamed about, but I know I did. I wake up again, and sigh in frustration. 'Three. That's three dreams or nightmares in one night. Brain, don't you DARE give me a nightmare to complete my suffering.'
Yeah...no. My brain never listens.
So I'm in my house, and apparently it's the holidays? There's candy canes and hanging lights and Christmas trees and little snowmen. And snow. Can't forget the snow. Anyway, my friend is with me, and she seems to be acting normal. Everything is going fine.
Suddenly, out of nowhere she pulls out a TRUMPET and starts chasing me with it, wanting to bash my head in for some reason. I run upstairs to my parents' room and hide under the covers. I can hear her, climbing the stairs and cracking like a madwoman.
Then it hits me. 'Wait a minute. This is another dream! I'm in a nightmare!' I get all excited. 'Yes! Once you know you're in a dream, you can control it, right? Then perhaps if I just willed my friend to stop chasing me, things will be fine and dandy!'
Under the covers, I concentrate with all of my might for her to stop. Yet bursts into the room, trumpet still in hand.
My mind was rebelling against me. It wasn't working. "Gotcha!" she yelled.
"You can't hurt me!" I recall shouting to my dream friend, jumping off of the bed. "This is just a nightmare!"
She just laughs and I feel uneasy when a wicked grin appears on her face. "It would be nicer to think that, wouldn't it?"
For a second I felt convinced this was reality. That my friend really did want to kill me with a trumpet of all things. But I was too stubborn to accept that. I dash out of the room and repeat the words 'wake up, wake up, wake up' in my head.
Then when my friend finally corners me in my bedroom and lifts the trumpet, I desperately shout out:
"Wake up!"
And then I hear myself gasp.
When I open my eyes, I see my bedroom ceiling. I was back in the real world. Only the sounds of my little sister snoring on the bed beside me and the ticking of the clock filled the room.
I check the time. It was around three in the morning. Only after about ten minutes of staring up at the ceiling do I finally get the courage to fall asleep again.
So there you have it. That was actually my very first lucid dream, albeit a rather terrifying one. It felt exhilarating, and I actually wish to experience it again. It was quite exciting.
Have you ever had a lucid dream yourself? If so, was it nearly as eventful as mine?
Funny thing, dreams...
