Phantom- A song by song review

So I'm gonna do something a little different. As the title implies I'm going to talk about all the songs in Phantom as a bit of a review I suppose. So beware this part might be really long!

~~~~~~~
Prologue: I love this scene. There's not really a lot of singing since it's the auction scene but oh my gosh. I love reciting this scene when I listen to it! It's fun! Especially when Earl Carpenter does it in the 25th Anniversary! His speaking voice is awesome.
Overture: Yes. Just yes. Probably one of the best musical overtures I've heard. It's so dramatic and if that could play every time I walked into a room... I'd be happy.
Think of Me: This is such a beautiful song! I love how it's your first introduction to Christine and you see a lot of sides to her in it. You see the scared, shy innocent young girl in the beginning of the song and as it goes on she gains confidence and blossoms into seeing her be strong and everything she knew she could be. Which represents the musical itself so well! That's what happens in the musical, you watch her grow throughout the musical just like this song! And the fact that this is your first introduction to her is just amazing.
Angel of Music: This song is so gorgeous. I love it when Meg and Christine sing together and how they're saying the same thing but they each mean something so different. When they say "Angel of Music hide no longer" I hear something so different in their voices. I hear general curiosity in Meg's voice. Like she just wants to know what Christine is talking about. Christine on the other hand wants to see her angel, the man she looks up to above anyone else. It's great!
Little Lotte: I love Raoul and Christine's first interaction! It's so freaking cute. The way they bond over childhood memories it's so cute! I can sorta relate to it as well because I have a friend, who is a boy, and we've been best friends since we were 5 and although I'm positive we aren't going to fall in love, I hope someday after not seeing each other for a long time we could be like Raoul and Christine and just talk about our childhood together. And then in the song Raoul screws everything up by not accepting her rejection to dinner. That bugs me a lot. Like she said no and he still is like "ok get changed"
The Mirror: One of my favorites! It's the first time you see the Phantom and I love how angry he is in the beginning of the song. It's so exciting! I love how quickly he goes from angry to fatherly! I love how passionately Christine sings to him and how much she wants his approval, considering she thinks he's her father's angel. It's a truly gorgeous song.
The Phantom of the Opera: Just. Yes. Such an awesome song like oh my. The lyrics are so amazing like seriously. I love when she says "I am the mask you wear" and then he says "It's me they hear" because that represents so much. He's representing himself in her because he can't go and perform himself. Christine is really what is protecting him, but also letting him show his accomplishments. And considering she is so amazing because of his teachings (and herself but hopefully you know what I mean) then it really is him people are hearing when she sings.
The Music of the Night: So if you guys read my other Phantom part you know how I feel about this song. It is the most perfect piece of music ever written in all of existence. The melodies and the harmonies and the orchestrations are just perfect and gorgeous and just ugh. The lyrics. Oh my gosh ! The lyrics. They mean so much to me. You can take it in the literal sense of the musical but they can also be so amazingly applied to real life and I apply the to my life quite often. To me the lyrics say to look deeper into things and remember what is dark in the world because that has just as much if not more to say then what is in the light. The lyrics also represent taking risks and turning away from what you know and trying new things. As the least spontaneous person on this planet, I like to remember that sometimes if I am scared about trying something new. Also, the music actually puts me in a wonderful trance. If I put on headphones and put on the song as loud as I can without hurting my ears, and just close my eyes and engulf myself in the song I forget about all my problems and all of my worries and I'm at peace and I'm happy. Listening to that song is the only time I'm ever at peace with the world. (I am a very nervous and stressed person) so to me it is just the most wonderful thing.
I Remember/Stranger Than: I love "I Remember" it is so pretty! For "Stranger Than" I either absolutely love it or it bugs me. It depends on the actors interpretation. I like the interpretation of him being angry and yelling and then being sad and then mocking himself and then begging Christine to see past his face and ugh it's amazing. I don't like the interpretations where the Phantom is just yelling the whole time and he's just angry.
Magical Lasso: Probably the most forgettable song on the whole soundtrack. I really like Madame Giry in this song though. She really shuts Bouquet up with the whole "hold you tongue" thing.
Notes/Prima Donna: I love the managers so much and I love this song. It's so entertaining and I like reciting it with them! Prima Donna is so pretty and I actually really like Carlotta because I enjoy opera music so that's fun for me. I love when the Phantom talks to them because he's so commanding and angry!
Poor Fool He Makes Me Laugh: Love it. As I said I like opera music and I like the way Carlotta and The Phantom get to interact. Again very cool. The Phantom's booming voice offstage is so amazing. And then Joseph Bouquet...
Why Have you Brought me Here: Eeeepp this is one of my favorite songs. I love how Raoul is trying to comfort a panicking Christine and how torn she is. She's now even more afraid of the Phantom but she also still loves his voice and everything. I love when she sings "My Soul Began to Soar" it's so pretty like ah.
All I Ask of You: Probably the best love song of all time. The lyrics are so heartfelt and real. They aren't all that cliche and even when they are it's beautifully and perfectly cheesy and cliche. The song itself is beautiful! The melodies and everything! Ugh it's so gorgeous. I love the end when Raoul picks Christine up and spins her around and they laugh. It's so real and so cute! I want a relationship like that!
All I Ask of You Reprise: *whimpers* This.Song.Is.So.Painfully.Depressing. Like seriously I'm watching All I Ask of You and I'm just like "Aweee that's so cute" and I'm not even thinking about what the Phantom is going to think and then BAM...I'm sobbing as soon as I see him on the stage and that first painfully sad note escapes his lips. It meant so much to him that he gave her music and then she talked about horrible he was to Raoul, which is understandable but in the Phantom's perspective it is the most heart shattering few sentences ever spoken. And then the chandelier crashes and it's just like OMG! There's an insane mix of emotions in the last few songs of Act I.
Masquerade: First I want to mention the colors. The colors are so amazing! In the Broadway version that is The song itself is so happy and fun and bright it so hard not to smile!
Why So Silent: I loooooovvvvee this song! After the happiness of Masquerade, the sudden dark twist is amazingly unexpected and awesome. The costume during this part is also just amazing! It's my second favorite costume in Phantom. I love how mocking and conceited he sounds here. It's just perfect. And it's the  introduction to Don Juan Triumphant!
Notes/Twisted Every Way: I love the difference between this Notes and the first one. They are both so much more frantic here and actually semi understand that they need to do what the Phantom says. I love the insults that he throws at them too! And how clever the line "Our Don Juan must lose some weight..." is because Piangi obviously weighs a lot more then the Phantom and they needed to switch. And don't get me started on "Twisted Every Way" its so perfect. To me this is the song that perfectly showcases Christine's fear yet care for the Phantom and how, even as she grows, she still has that young innocence in her. And just in itself the song is simply gorgeous.
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again: This song is so gorgeous. The lyrics are so meaningful and heartfelt and sweet and sad and just Christine Daae is the most perfect person alive. This song really shows Christine's strength and her bravery and how truly difficult it was for her when her father passed. It also explains how much the Phantom originally meant to her and the line "Help me say goodbye" really shows how she needed to remember and honor her father by saying goodbye to the person who tricked her into thinking it was his angel. It's so deep and I love Christine so much, especially in this song.
Wandering Child: Quite possibly the most pretty song I've ever heard. I love the violin in the beginning! I love the line "Have you forgotten your angel" It is so pretty, especially when Ramin sings it, it's the prettiest thing ever. I also love how it's the Phantom desperately clinging on to the only power he still had over her. I kinda hate that he tried to manipulate her in a time where he knew she was really vulnerable, but that's the only way he knew how to win her love. But! I love how Raoul comes running in to protect her and how he and the Phantom yell at each other. It kinda kills the prettiness but it's so entertaining. I hate how Raoul decides that he wants to kill the Phantom, but I also understand his perspective but like I love the Phantom. I love also at the end when Raoul is instructing the plan and the Phantom agrees with him! Like when he says "Idiot I said only when the time comes" and the other guy who shot the gun says "But Monsieur-" and the Phantom just comes in and is like "No buts! For once Monsieur Le Vicompte is right..." It's the best thing ever!
The Point of No Return: This song may be the definition of perfection. The lyrics, the melody, the passion, the dress - it's all perfect. I feel bad for poor, poor Piangi, but the Phantom finally is able to have his shining moment on stage, until Christine rips his mask off...on stage...in front of everyone... I HATE like passionately hate that moment. In my opinion, it was the worst thing she could have done. The fact that she reveals that it's him is pretty bad but she may have just have wanted to know if it was really him. The fact that she rips his mask off, in my opinion, is completely unnecessary and rude. Especially after what he sings to her! That little piece of "All I Ask of You" breaks my heart and in response she reveals his greatest weakness to the whole crowd. AND! She knew what happened the first time! Why did she expect this to be any different!? That being said...the song is a magnificent triumph...see...see what I did there...ha...ha.
Down Once More: *sobs* I can honestly say that I cry literally every single time I listen to this song. Like thinking about it now I want to cry. It breaks my heart into millions and millions of pieces, but yet I love everything about it. I love Christine's strength here. She's not afraid of him anymore and she musters up all her courage to kiss the Phantom for his sake but also to save Raoul. Raoul is so brave. Although he kinda epically fails...he goes in and immediately gets hung... he tries! The line "I worked so hard to free you" is so sad because that's all he tries to do the whole musical and he can't. And then just the Phantom. Every thing he says...every line...it hurts my soul for one reason or another. When he's doing stupid things like forcing her into marriage it hurts my soul because he's hurting his chances so much. So if he's not saying something stupid he's saying something that's utterly just depressing about his backstory or his feelings or he's screaming his lungs out because everything that's happening is killing him so much. And then. The end. The last few chilling lines that will stick with me for an ever depressing eternity. The way he says "Christine I love you"...I can't even deal with it. I will burst into tears every time I promise you. And everything that follows that just no. To me the most heartbreaking line is "It's over now the music of the night..." All that passion and everything he ever wanted just...gone...all gone. It breaks my heart that those are his final words in the musical...I can't even deal with it. *continues sobbing*
