Natasha, Pierre and the Comet of 1812
So my friend convinced me to listen to Natasha, Pierre, awhile ago, before the new album came out and I listened to some and couldn't really get into it and then, this friend persuaded me to listen to the new album and I did and I really loved it!
Since, I think I've listened to the full album straight through once and shuffled it a bunch of times as well. Mostly though I've had the song Dust and Ashes on repeat!
~~~~~~~
Favorite Song: Well if you didn't already guess this it's Dust and Ashes. I have a lot of other favorites as well but this song is really really powerful lyrically and orchestrally. Lyrically specifically, because I feel like a lot of people, if not most, can or have been able to relate to it on some level. I know that I can relate to it in so so so many ways! Even beyond that the lyrics are just gorgeously written! The way they convey the certain emotions go so far beyond the typical way of expressing them. They have imagery and the most wonderful use of metaphors I've ever heard! If you've ever listened to the song and paid attention to the lyrics, hopefully you understand what I'm trying to convey! Also, it is sung by the astounding Josh Groban, who literally has the voice of an angel, and I love the honest emotion he puts into it which makes it all the better!
Least Favorite Song: The Private and Intimate Life of the House. Okay parts of this song are kind of catchy but Mary's father is awful and the part where he screams about his glasses kind of scares me haha. It's too loud and yelly so it's not really enjoyable for me!
Favorite Character: Pierre!!!! A thousand times Pierre! I love his character and his development! Again in certain ways I can relate to Pierre a lot but even after that he is the nicest and most intelligent character like ever. He is classy, but I like the way he holds himself as no better than anyone else. Now he takes that to a very sad extreme, but even yet he helps everyone, even Anatole after the whole Natasha thing. And he knows Anatole is manipulating him and yet he helps anyway! He has true character and a true moral compass which I love so much. Also his development is insane from the time we reach the end. His final lament about The Great Comet and how he realized that because he's kind his life does have meaning! It's really an uplifting ending for him and he has such a great arch. Sorry that was so long haha.
Least Favorite Character: Anatole! Oh my gosh I hate Anatole! He's a terrible person! What he does to Natasha is just awful! He's a stuck up, entitled jerk! And yes he is attractive but that is so reason to destroy someone's life! Sorry that was harsh but what he does angers me a lot!
Costumes: The costumes for this show are amazing! They're colorful and fun and it seems to make the show all that more entertaining! I especially love Natasha's costume and Anatole's green coat! They seem like a lot of fun to wear as well!
Stage Design: So I'm not sure if you all are aware but Natasha, Pierre is performed in the Imperial Theatre on Broadway (which is where I saw Les Mis) so they completely redid the entire theatre so that the audience is entertained with the various pieces of the stage so that the audience is more a part of the show! It's really really cool and new and I think that adds a really fun level of entertainment and story telling! It makes it seem all the more real! And again with all the flamboyance and color of the costumes and choreography it's probably such a pleasure to watch!
Original vs New Cast Recording: So I know that a lot of people are still really faithful to the original cast recording with Dave Malloy and Phillipa Soo, but I wanted to discuss why I like the new cast better. Well firstly I'll be frank, I really dislike Dave Malloy's Pierre. I really really don't like his voice and it overshadows any good acting he might have. I know he wrote the show *and he is amazing in that sense* just I don't think performing is really his thing. And obviously I love Phillipa Soo, and this role is great for her! But I like Deneé Barton a little bit better because I like how well she suits the character. To me Natasha seems so childish and Deneé's voice really suits that (in a good way!). Phillipa's voice is amazing toobut it sound too mature for Natasha I think. Again, she's very good I just prefer Deneé a little bit better. Deneé also has such a pretty voice! I love listening to it!
Josh Groban: Okay I made a separate section for Josh Groban just to fangirl. Don't judge me too harshly! I've been a fan of Josh Groban for like ever! Probably even longer than I've been obsessed with musicals! So when his album Stages came out I was thrilled and I loved it! The only thing I could say about it was that I felt that he was not a very good actor in terms of emotion in some of the songs, so when I learned he was on Broadway I was like 'well I guess I'll see if it's any good' and he shocked me so much! His acting - at least on the cast recording - is so good! In the song Pierre and Natasha and then The Great Comet of 1812, he made me cry by the way he sang and acted out the role and I loved it. He also has the voice of an angel which helps a lot on everything haha!
Also I apologize for being inactive lately! I'm finishing up school which means lots of homework and testing! But I'll be done soon so hopefully I can update more!
Also I'm sorry for the length and rambleness of some of these paragraphs haha! I need to work on conjoining my thoughts properly! Maybe I'll make that a summer goal!
