Bonnie and Clyde

So in honor of the Newsies movie starring  Jeremy Jordan coming out next weekend, I will be reviewing other musicals he has appeared in this week!

This was also recently requested by the wonderful, The_Christine_Daae so I thank her for that!

So I first listened to Bonnie and Clyde last summer and since then I've watched a bootleg of the Broadway show on YouTube (say what you will but I was desperate) .
~~~~~~~
Favorite Character: So there aren't a whole lot of characters in Bonnie and Clyde but I really like them all. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Clyde. Now I may seem biased because he's played by Jeremy Jordan and I love him, but I really like Clyde's character just because he's so bad I guess. I find it somewhat intriguing and interesting that for his whole life he yearned to make money in such a way and then accomplished that to such a high degree. Especially during the time period, it was interesting how much he wanted to rebel and step away from everyone hopelessly trying to make up for the Great Depression and actually get money. And yes I'm aware that he's a criminal and he's bad but that's really the fun and charm of the musical!
Least Favorite Character: I don't really think I have one. I really like them all. If I had to pick one I guess I'd say maybe Blanche? But for no particular reason she just interests me the least.
Favorite Song: This one's also really hard. I'd have to say it's a tie between 'How 'Bout a Dance" and "Raise a Little Hell".  'How 'Bout a Dance' has a wonderful easy going feel to it. It's gorgeous and really reminds me of the whimsy of the time period, especially for girls like Bonnie. It's really quite wonderful. However, I love the rawness of 'Raise a Little Hell'. Jeremy sings is amazingly, and I love how this is such a turning point for Clyde but it also shows why his character ends up doing what he does. It's really quite fantastic.
Least Favorite Song: Probably 'God's Arms Are Always Open." I don't really like southern church music and it has a church choir and I don't really like those either so it's not my favorite....
Original Cast: This original cast is probably my favorite original cast of all time. Even ignoring Jeremy Jordan for a second, Laura Osnes is just outstanding! Her voice his gorgeous, she's a phenomenal actress, and not to mention she's beautiful inside and out! I love the way she plays Bonnie! And then of course there's Claybourne Elder, who plays Buck. He just has this wonderful charm about him that I just adore! And his voice is really fantastic. And Melissa von der Schyff is just delightful as Blanche! Her accent never fails to make me laugh! And then of course there's Jeremy Jordan who's just fantastic in every way. His singing and his acting simply blows me away and I sometimes forget he's not actually Clyde Barrow! He's definitely in my top 5 favorite actors and singers.
Historical Accuracy: I love the true story of Bonnie and Clyde so when I first heard of the musicals I was almost positive it would be overwhelmingly inaccurate. But I was shocked to find that that's not the case. For the most part I found it wonderfully accurate with the dramatic elements added. I actually even learned a bit from it which was quite exciting! So if you want to learn about the famous duo I'd definitely give it a listen!
Frank Wildhorn: Frank Wildhorn is most definitely the most underrated composer like ever. I think his work is just fantastic and it makes me quite sad that his work is so under appreciated. Especially Bonnie and Clyde. It's such a wonderful story and the music is so moving that it should have been open for much longer than a month and a half. I hope that it returns to Broadway one day to succeed but I don't see that happening any time soon which is disappointing.... However, I think it's been successful in other countries so that's good I guess. I just wish it was more popular in America.
Also I'm obsessed with the picture in the media, isn't it just gorgeous?
