2017 Tony Awards

Okay! So the 71st Annual Tony Awards were on last night and they were amazing! So of course I need to do a review! So here's all of my opinions about the 2017 Tony Awards! Warning: this may be long!

~~~~~~~
Kevin Spacey/Opening Number: So when I had heard that Kevin Spacey was hosting I was very skeptical. For those of you who don't know, Kevin Spacey is a very popular actor and is on the popular Netflix show House of Cards. He has been on Broadway before and has won a Tony, but I didn't really think of him as a 'Broadway person' so I was skeptical. But he actually did a pretty good job! His opening number was very cute as it played homage to the Best Musical nominees and the fact that many people were skeptical about Spacey hosting. I thought it was original in the sense that he didn't just copy something Neil Patrick Harris would have done and it was pretty good. It was definitely not my favorite opening ever but it was better than I had expected. Also he was very funny throughout the entire show, which I think a lot of hosts lack. The impressions he did were funny and the jokes he made were pretty funny. So overall I'd say he did a pretty good job!
Come From Away: So Come From Away is the true story of a group of people who get stranded in Canada after 9/11. I've heard a lot about it and it has good reviews, it just never sparked any interest for me. And after their performance last night, I'm just still not interested. For me, this was the worst performance of the night and not because it was bad, I was just bored. I'm sure it's a talented cast and a fine show, I'm just really not interested in it.
Miss Saigon: I loooveee Miss Saigon! It is the love story of a Vietnamese girl named Kim and an American soldier, Chris, during and after the Vietnam war and the fall of Saigon. The performance was amazing! I am in love with Eva Noblezada! She is a phenomenal Kim and he voice and acting skills are gorgeous. Her performance of I'd Give My Life For You last night was heart breaking and wonderful and I am very sad (though not shocked) that she didn't win Best Actress!
Falsettos: So I can't tell you what Falsettos is about because I'm really not so sure myself, and I wasn't too big of a fan of their performance. It was good and the cast is amazing but I really didn't like the song. However, the entire show will be airing on PBS in October so I will watch that and see if I enjoy it more!
Dear Evan Hansen: Dear Evan Hansen is the story about Evan Hansen who has social anxiety and gets into a situation into which he has to lie to everyone he knows and then becomes somewhat internet famous. And sadly I think I am the only person who doesn't really like it. I like the idea of the plot and I think Ben Platt does an amazing job! But I don't really like the music, only because it's not my type of thing. I like more classical sounding musicals so this just really wasn't for me. However, Ben Platt was fantastic and Waving Through a Window is a catchy song. It's not bad at all, just not my thing! I know it is a good show and a lot of people can relate to it. I will eventually do a full chapter on Dear Evan Hansen because there are a few topics relating to it that I'd like to talk about.
Groundhog Day: So Groundhog Day is based on the film of the same name and is about a weather man who gets stuck repeating the same day over and over, and that day is Groundhog Day. So I've heard a lot from this musical and I think it's fun and there's a lot of dancing, which is what I expected from the performance! But no, my ears were graced by the sweet sound of Andy Karl's voice. He was fantastic! The song 'Seeing You' was so lovely and already gave me so much insight into the character and the story which I loved. I love the love story aspect of it and as I previously mentioned Andy Karl and the rest of the cast were great!
Hello, Dolly!: Hello, Dolly is the epitome of a golden age musical! It's fun and it's catchy and I have sadly not see the movie yet! Everyone knew it was going to win Best Revival and Bette Midler was going to win Best Actress! However, she did not perform as people were expecting! Though I would have liked to see her perform, giving the spotlight to David Hyde Pierce was nice! Also it was a new song that no one had really heard before so I think it was a good decision on their part. I thought the song was cute and whimsical and David Hyde Pierce was a joy to watch!
The Rockettes & Leslie Odom Jr and Cynthia Erivo: Obviously the Rockettes are extraordinary to watch! They are so talented and really gives a sense of the identity of New York City. The song New York, New York is one of my favorite songs ever and Leslie Odom Jr and Cynthia Erivo sang it wonderfully! I'd love to hear a full version!
War Paint: Patti Lupone. That's all I'm going to say. She is and was just phenomenal as always. Christine Ebersole has a gorgeous voice as well! But like Patti Lupone.
The Great Comet: You guys already know how I feel about this show and let me just say: THIS WAS THE BEST TONY PERFORMANCE I'VE EVER SEEN! Sorry I'm fangirling so much but Josh Groban is the greatest thing to have ever graced the earth and Lucas Steele is also the greatest and omg. Josh sounded amazing doing Dust and Ashes in the beginning, I nearly cried, and then going right into The Abduction with Lucas Steele was the most fun I've ever had watching anything! The dancing and the costumes and the singing were all perfect! The interaction with the audience and the fact that Dave Malloy was able to come up on stage with them (and not sing!) was really nice! It was just so so so amazing and I am so deeply saddened by the fact that Josh Groban is leaving the show soon!
Bandstand: This show also seems like a blast! It's about soldiers returning home from WWII and to deal with their trauma they form a swing band. It takes place in the 1950s and it seems like so much fun! The music is very jazzy as is the dancing! It seems so authentic to the time period and of course it helps that it stars Corey Cott and Laura Osnes! It's a show I'd really like to see and I'm really excited for the cast recording to come out!
Final Number: Okay so I'm really dumb and went to bed before the final number because I had forgotten about it.... so I haven't seen it yet! I'll update this when I'm able to though!
Best Revival Category: So this is just me ranting really fast about the fact that there were 4 eligible shows to be nominated for Best Revival and guess which one wasn't nominated...... Cats. I know it wouldn't have won against Hello, Dolly but it absolutely should have been nominated! When it originally came out it was nominated a lot and it's the fourth longest running show on Broadway ever! They could have just nominated it for curtesy! Cats is such a good show and I can't even reason why it wasn't nominated! It annoyed me the entire night! Like it's Andrew Lloyd Webber! It deserves to be nominated!!!
Best Musical: Okay I absolutely predicted that Dear Evan Hansen would win but I am a little upset about and let me tell you why. Though Dear Evan Hansen is a good show, I think Great Comet had more qualifications to win Best Overall Musical. I think Dear Evan Hansen only won because it talks about social anxiety and Ben Platt is a good actor. The music is good for other people but it's also not all that new and original whereas I think Dave Malloy mixed so many genres and ideas to create something that really hasn't been seen before. Also the costuming and the lighting should have added to it as well. The costumes for this show are amazing and blow Evan Hansen out of the water! Also the entirely new experience this show has with the audience should have been something to think about as well! This show as innovated a theatre and an experience like no other show has before! The audience is a part of the show! That's new and it's different! I understand that Evan Hansen talks about problems that are very prevalent in today's society but that doesn't make it better overall and since this is best musical that means best musical overall and I think it should have been looked at more looked at in that sense. I'm happy for Evan Hansen and I do think that it was deserving, I just think Great Comet was a little more deserving. Of course that's only my opinion!
Well that about raps it up for my Tony Review! I hope you enjoyed!
