EXT. DArk abyss - DAY
FROM THE DARKNESS...
John (V.O.)
The moment, in battle, when you know you've been defeated, and there's no way to save yourself. There's that time when your life flashes before your eyes, and you think of everything that made you happy in your waking life.  Nothing was going to take that away from me, nothing.

EXT. WAR-ZONE - DAY
Flashing BOMBS cascaded along an open battlefield as gunfire exploded from enemy territory. For a moment, we see men shooting violently toward one another as bombs continue to descend around them.
CLOSE ON: A gun cocking in shaky hands, and we pull back to reveal:
JOHN ISAAC MORRIS, early 20's, standing behind an armored truck lying on its side. Pulling an extra bullet pack from his vest and connecting a long strip to the caliber of the gun, he cocks his rifle once more. The gun Jams before firing multiple shots into the war field. John suddenly ducks down as a bomb blows up nearby, sending multiple cars and soldiers skyrocketing, and takes aim at some nearby enemies as he begins to shoot again. The gun jams again, and John cocks his gun one last time, trying to get it to work, but slumps down against the car after realizing it wasn't going to.
INT. KITCHEN - FLASHBACK - DAY
John slides his hands around his wife, JESSICA MORRIS's early 20s, waist as she chops onions and plops them in the soup on the stovetop.
John
Babe, let me get that for you.
Jessica
You're going to make me cry.
John snuggles his face into her hair as he wraps his arms around her.
John
You smell nice.
Jessica giggles as she turns to face John with the knife. John pulls her hand, holding the knife down as Jessica laughs more.
John
You're going to have to put that down.
Jessica wraps her arms and legs around John.
Jessica
Do you think I would ever hurt you?
John runs his hand down the length of her body before kissing her along her jawline.
John
I don't.
Jessica smirks, leaning in closer. Their noses brush each other.
Jessica
John, will I ever see you again.
John leans in and whispers in her ear.
John
I hope.
Her sudden teary eyes drop.
Jessica
I love you, John.
John
I love you too, Jessica.
EXT. WAR-ZONE - DAY
John crouches behind the armored car and takes shallow breaths. Reaching the car, he finds an old useless radio, but nothing else. He tosses the gun to the side and looks around for an outlet. Seeing another tipped armored car on the other side of the battlefield seems like the only safest barrier. Taking one more deep long breath, he dodges bullets as he charges for the armored vehicle. Slamming his back against the cold metal, he takes a breath of relief. Peering into the empty armored car, he finds a grenade on the dashboard and a gun hooked to the door. Grabbing the weapon first, John swings the shoulder sling over his shoulder and grabs the grenade. John slumped down against the back of the car and realized that the grenade was already active.
John
Awww, Shit.
EXT. CHURCH - - FLASHBACK - - DAY
Bells chime in the background as John, wearing a black suit, walks into a church. People around him are crying, and he is trying not to call, but he is struggling. He kneels next to his pew and does the sign of the cross against his face before he sits down in the front row. The ceremonial mass begins as SHAWN MORRIS, mid 20's Jessica's brother, begins to speak.
Shawn
Good Morning; we all gather today to mourn the loss of my sister Jessica Morris. It was not only my sister. She was a wife to a fantastic man, a teacher, and a hero. I think Jessica did not die in shame. I believe she knew it would happen, and she was brave. I can't exactly speak on her behalf, but if she could speak right now, she would tell us she lived an extraordinary life. One of the most incredible things about her was the love she shared with all of us.
Tears begin to run down John's face.
CUT TO:
John walks up to Jessica's casket and kneels.
John
(Whispering)
I should have been there. It should have been me. It's all my fault.
Tears begin to flow from John's eyes.
EXT. WAR-ZONE - DAY
The bomb begins to fry John's hand as John tosses it from his left hand to his right carefully as if he's playing hot potato. Holding the bomb in his right hand, he carefully slings the gun off his shoulder and grabs the bomb steady in his palm. John sees enemy fire across the way and looks down at the bomb. He charges forward toward his adversary as he holds the bomb to his chest. A bright light emerged from the grenade, and it blistered to smithereens.
...FADE TO BLACK.

The End.
