James Knight: Teenage Superhuman

INT. LABORATORY - DAY
YOUNG JAMES KNIGHT 6, an impulsive kid with an overactive imagination, races across a dark, ash-gray tile floor in white sneakers. The laboratory around him is spacious, filled with neat white structures and experimental test tubes, including vials of neon liquids that catch James's attention.
SAMUAL (Sam) KNIGHT, early 20s, James's uncle in his early 20s, a scientist with brown eyes, dark blond hair, and stubble, is engrossed in typing at a computer, surrounded by paperwork. James stops in his tracks, prompting a frustrated look from Samual.
Samual
James Everett Knight, you better be careful!
James thrusts his fists toward the sky. He runs off again. He stops at the table on the opposite side of the room and looks at Samual.
JAMES
Sam, I'm a superhero!
James nearly collides with the marble table as he hops on his toes. Samual remains fixated on his computer screen as James performs loops around the room.
In the background, a faint heartbeat pulses in James's chest as he clutches a flask. A dark shadow emerges, revealing YOUNG MAXIMUS KNIGHT, 6, with brown hair and eyes, urging James to drink fluorescent fluids.
James quickly consumes the liquid, and Maximus vanishes. James's eyes fade under the bright lights as he collapses, but Samual catches him. The heartbeat grows louder.
SERIES OF SHOTS
- JAMES FLUTTERS HIS EYES OPEN AND SHUTS.
- SAMUAL CRADLES JAMES IN HIS ARMS.
- JAMES, PANIC ON HIS FACE, STUNNED IN CONFUSION — HIS FACE
PALE, PASTY, AND BLUE.
Return to scene.
Samual's screams muffled.
SAMUAL
(shaking James)
James...
(beat)
James...
(beat)
James!
Samuel pulls James close, and the flask slips from his fingers. James drifts into a deeper sleep, his eyes fluttering one last time as the pulse fades.
Maximus wanders back into the room, studying James in Samual's arms. Samual looks at Maximus, anger and fear building.
SAMUAL
Go, Max! Get out of here!
Max watches Samual with sad eyes as he cowardly wanders into the nearby corner, sliding his knees into his chest.
SAMUAL
James...
(beat)
James...
(beat)
James...
(beat)
JAMES!
Samual urgently shakes James awake, alarmed by his fading complexion. With a surge of hope and fear, he scoops up James and sprints down the hallway, bursting through the exit doors to freedom in seconds.
EXT. CITY STREETS - BURBANK, CA - DAY
City streets blur as Samual races through, barely recognizing them since leaving the facility. He zooms along, narrowly avoiding a bus.
Int. HosPITAL — DAY
Samual charges into a hospital emergency room. James slumps in Samual's arms, unconscious, his skin turning a deep blue.
SAMUAL
He needs a doctor!
A HOSPITAL NURSE walks by, noticing James' blue lips as he yanks him from his arms and rushes him to the nearest open bed.
Bip-Bip.
NURSE ONE
Code blue! Code blue!
James is laid on an empty bed, and a TEAM OF NURSES AND DOCTORS rush in, swiftly attending to him—stripping off his clothes, attaching monitors, and providing oxygen. The doctor turns to Samual, his gaze intense and flustered.
DOCTOR
How long was he like this?
SAMUAL
(Panicked)
Just a few minutes. I left James unattended, and he drank something--
Bip-Bip.
DOCTOR
--What did he drink?
SAMUAL
I-I don't know.
Samual watches them WORK AN IV into James' arm as a memory flashes in his mind.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - GOVERNMENT FACILITY - MEMORY FLASH - DAY
SAMUAL KNIGHT, 16, flutters his eyes in a stark, white room. He's immobilized on a metal table, bound by steel bands at his wrists and ankles, with a green IV feeding into his veins. Panic grips him, and he thrashes and sweats, groaning in agony. Only when he sees GARRISON WRIGHT, in his late 30s, his science teacher, and his naive brother, ALEXANDER KNIGHT, 20s, in the room does he realize their presence. His pleading look for help goes unanswered as they both remain indifferent.
SAMUAL
A-Alex, stop! D-dad is going to--
Samual writhes and yells on the table. Mr. Wright takes notes while Alexander watches. Two syringes are jabbed into Samual's thigh, sending him excruciating pain. His vision flickers.
INT. JAMES'S ROOM - HOSPITAL - LATER
Samual steps away from the room, taking deep breaths to prevent hyperventilating. A nurse finds him panicking in the middle of the room.
NURSE ONE
Are you okay, sir?
Samual sucks air through his teeth, trying to catch his breath.
SAMUAL
Yeah, I'm okay.
Suddenly, OFFICER JEREMY TAYLOR, in his late 20s, a dark-skinned, hotshot cop, joins Samual's side with a notepad and a pen.
OFFICER
Samual?
SAMUAL
Yeah.
OFFICER
What happened? Matthew is going to kill you.
SAMUAL
I was babysitting him, and I wasn't watching him for a minute when he drank--
Samual STARES off into space, fear in his eyes. The cop stops Samual for a moment.
OFFICER
--Breathe. You're not in trouble, Samual. It happens more than you think. But we need to know what it was.
SAMUAL
I-I don't know. I swear.
OFFICER
It would help your case if you texted Matt. I'll talk to him too.
SAMUAL
I left my cell phone by my desk.
Samual starts breathing heavily again in panic. Suddenly, a broad Paramedic, DEXTER MARIAN, in his early 20s, stops in his tracks, staring at Samual, frozen in place.
DEXTER
Samual?!
Samual turns around to find Dexter in a paramedic uniform, wheeling an empty gurney into the hospital.
SAMUAL
Dex?!
Samual's eyebrows knit together. Suddenly, his panic subsides, replaced with confused excitement.
DEXTER
I didn't think I'd see you again. What are you doing here?
SAMUAL
My nephew--
NURSE ONE
(In the background)
--Code blue stabilized.
The nurses pile out of the room, each dropping their gloves in the trash. The last group of nurses walk out, ripping off his gloves, and shakes his head, glancing at Officer Taylor. The group of doctors and nurses leave.
DEXTER
Oh no.
SAMUAL
Yep.
Samual's lips melt together in frustration.
DEXTER
I hope he's okay. How is Matthew?
SAMUAL
He's good.
DEXTER
Good. How's Danielle and your, uh, daughter?
SAMUAL
Great. I have to check on--
Samual listens to Dexter tap the side of the empty gurney. Then, another paramedic wanders out of a room.
PARAMEDIC
--Dexter.
DEXTER
I, uh, have to go. I hope all is well with your nephew--
Dexter pauses for a fill-in-the-blank.
SAMUAL
--James.
DEXTER
James... Nice seeing you again, Samual.
SAMUAL
Yeah, you too.
A nurse screams. Samual turns to face a nurse, late '50s, petite and skinny, with an IV catheter in her hands, staring up at James hovering just below the ceiling.
JAMES
(Screaming)
Samual?! SAMUAL! I can fly!
The nurse scrambles out of the room. James reaches out, trying to stabilize himself as Sam closes the curtain behind him.
Bip-bip. Bip-bip.
SAMUAL
How are you doing that?
Samual paces before James, occasionally chewing on his hangnails to avoid a panic attack. Red streaks flush his face.
JAMES
I-I don't know.
Samual's eyes crease, and he sighs.
SAMUAL
Shit.
(beat)
Can you get yourself down from there, James?
He peers out of the doorway and shuts the door.
JAMES
I can try.
James focuses on his breathing and the breeze, then abruptly crashes onto the bed frame, frustrating Samual. James makes space on the mattress, and Samual joins James.
SAMUAL
You're not saying a word about this to your brother, mother, or father when we get home. Understood?
James nods. Samual hides his face in his hands and groans.
SAMUAL
Your mom and dad are going to kill me.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NOON
TIME LAPSE - FIVE MONTHS LATER
Matthew steps toward Samual, his hand on his gun holster.
MATTHEW
What did you do to my kid?
Samual cowardly steps back, bumping into the side of the couch.
MATTHEW
(snaps)
SAM! What happened?!
SAMUAL
He's okay. It happened so fast...I took my eyes off of him for one second and--
Matthew shifts, his hand slipping over his gun holster again.
MATTHEW
--And what? He could have died, Samual.
SAMUAL
Grace isn't my only child, Matt. I have eight sons and Alexander, he... he's a monster. He's kept them away from me and used Danielle, my children, and me as lab rats. I couldn't watch James meet the same fate as them...
Matthew's hand shifts from his holster. The front door swings open.
DEREK
Dad?
MATTHEW
(to Sam)
We'll talk about this later. Don't tell James I know about his powers.
SAMUAL
(Muttering)
Only if you don't tell them about my powers.
Both boys walk into the living room.
JAMES
Hey, Sam.
MATTHEW
How was school?
Derek scoffs.
DEREK
Wow, not even a "Hey, Happy Birthday, Derek."
Derek stares at Samual with a raised eyebrow.
JAMES
Mr. Kendall told me he wants to talk to you, Dad.
James leans against the staircase.
MATTHEW
Happy Birthday, bud.
Matthew smiles at Derek before his eyes shift to Sam, glaring at him.
MATTHEW
We'll celebrate later.
DEREK
(Excited)
Can Sam make the cake?
MATTHEW
Ooh. You have to talk to your Mom about--
DEREK
--Please?!
Derek's eyelashes bob, and he smiles.
SAMUAL
Yeah, buddy. I can make a cake for you.
DEREK
Awesome!
Beat. Derek clamps his fingers together, staring at James with a raised eyebrow and a grin. Then Derek and James race up the staircase.
INT. STAIRCASE - SAME TIME
James stands at the top steps, giggling, watching Derek race after him.
DEREK
Dad is going to kill Samual when he finds out you have powers.
JAMES
Quiet, Derek!
James silences Derek with giggles. SLAM! The door shuts behind them. Samual's eyes drift from his angry brother.
INT. LIVING ROOM - SAME TIME
Matthew draws his gun and points it at Samual. Samual looks up at Matthew in panic.
SAMUAL
What the hell, Matthew? You know I'm invincible, right?

Samual bites his lip anxiously.
MATTHEW
I will shoot you if you hurt Derek or James.
Samual scoffs, shifting his footing. Matthew's lips melt into a scowl.
MATTHEW
Talk to them, and don't tell James I know about his powers.

Sam's eyes drift away from Matthew to the staircase with a hesitant, deep breath.
INT. JAMES BEDROOM - PRESENT — DAY
TIME LAPSE - TEN YEARS LATER
JAMES KNIGHT, 16, under sheets. DEREK KNIGHT, 20, dressed in his head-to-feet police uniform, glares down at his brother, pushing his shoulders. James moans in annoyance.
JAMES
Don't you have work?
James rubs his groggy eyes and sits up. His hands pull through his shaggy hair, and he grins.
DEREK
Start getting ready for school. You have fifteen minutes.
James' grin widens. He pulls out of bed and shoves his brother into his sheets.
DEREK
(Mumbles in pain)
Damn it, James.
James laughs.
JAMES
You're such a big baby.
DEREK
(defensive)
No. You're super strong.
James huffs and tugs at his hoodie. He yanks it over his head, drops it on the floor, and walks to his dresser.
James grabs his clothes and dives into his closet, digging for a few sneakers. The room stills. James rushes to the bathroom at superhuman speed.
SERIES OF QUICK SHOTS -
- JAMES, BRUSHING HIS TEETH AT SUPERHUMAN SPEED.
- JAMES, BRUSHING HIS SHORT HAIR INTO CURLY WAVES.
- JAMES, STARING AT HIMSELF IN THE MIRROR.
END OF SERIES OF SHOTS.
INT. Downstairs foyer - JAMES'S HOUSE - DAY
At the bottom of the broad staircase, MATTHEW KNIGHT, wearing his cop uniform, adjusts his badge shoulder. He looks up the stairs, yelling at James.
MATTHEW
You almost ready?
INT. BATHROOM - DAY
James pulls his fingers through his hair, watching Derek appear in the doorway.
DEREK
Dad has a point, James. My shift is going to start, and I don't want to get into trouble with Mark's father any more than you want to fight him. I'm sure you can put your powers to good use.
James spits, rinses, and rushes to the staircase, sliding down the banister and landing entirely at the bottom steps.
JAMES
Was that fast enough for you?
Derek looks stunned and amused at his brother. His father enters the room from behind, adjusting the collar on his uniform.
MATTHEW
Are you driving James to school?
Matthews's eyebrow rises. Derek pulls the keys from his pocket, waving them in his father's face.
DEREK
Just to school.
Matthew raises an eyebrow in James's direction before walking off, leading James and Derek out the door.
I/E. COP CAR - city streets — DAY
James slumps against his brother's cop car in the front seat. His hood yanked far above his head. Derek is driving. He reluctantly glances over at his brother briefly and returns his eyes to the road.
DEREK
Don't feed into Mark Reignson's bull today. I know he's a bully and a jerk, but--
JAMES
--I know. You don't have to bring it up every time. I won't do anything stupid.
Derek's eyebrows raise as if to protest, but OFFICER GARRETT REIGNSON, the police chief's brother-in-law, CRACKS through the walkie and catches both young men off guard. Derek grips the intercom tight in his fingers.
DEREK
Ten-four.
GARRETT
Two-Eleven, about ten minutes ago. A robbery with possession of a firearm. Plate number YDS-1134, stolen vehicle, black Bentley, tinted windows. The suspects are wearing black masks, reported as inexperienced delinquents, and were last seen driving down Toronto Avenue.
Derek grips his walkie.
DEREK
Roger.
Derek accelerates, lights and sirens blazing, leading a pack of police cars chasing the black Bentley. Trash flies from the Bentley as Derek speeds up. James, in his seat, watches in shock, one eyebrow raised. In a decisive move, Derek rams the Bentley into a nearby brick wall, ending the pursuit.
DEREK
James, stay in the car and don't use your powers. I mean it.
James nods. Derek exits the car with his weapon drawn.
(CONT'D)
(To the robbers)
Come out of the vehicle with your hands up and slowly walk back towards my car.
As six cop cars block their way, one boy pulls his hands out the passenger window. A dozen officers aim their guns as both boys exit the car. One drops his weapon before they split up. Derek chases one, and James, adjusting his hoodie, pursues the other in an alley.
EXT. ALLEYway - DAY
The robbers stare at James, establishing eye contact. MAXIMUS (Max) KNIGHT, 16, disguises his deep brown eyes with a hoodie and a ski mask. His hands twitch by his side, anxiety reaching his foot as he taps. James curiously stares back at the robber, his brown eyes seeming familiar.
INT. LABORATORY - FLASHBACK - DAY
YOUNG MAXIMUS KNIGHT, 4, a superhero t-shirt and black and white sneakers, creeps into the laboratory, his eyes landing on JAMES KNIGHT, 4, playing with a superhero action figure, flying it around the room. Samual sits in the background, wearing headphones as he types on his computer. James stops when he sees Maximus standing there watching.
JAMES
Hello!
James waves enthusiastically.
JAMES
Who are you?
Max nervously stands there staring at his father, unsure whether to speak.
MAXIMUS
Maximus. What's your name?
Max curiously creeps closer to James.
JAMES
I'm James.
Max wanders up to James, studying his toy from afar.
JAMES
This is Skye. He's a superhero.
James hands Max his toy, which floats two feet above the ground. They playfully guide it around the room. Samual, immersed in his work with loud music blaring through his headphones, abruptly stops as Alexander Knight, Maximus, and James's uncle, hurries in from around the corner.
ALEXANDER
MAX! Go to your room NOW!
Max drops the toy and his smile, his eyes pleading with James for help, then his father, Samual.
ALEXANDER
Now, Max! Hurry before I have to call security.
Max takes one last pleading look at James, tears coating his cheeks, and he's escorted away.
EXT. ALLEYWAY - PRESENT - DAY
Maximus, disguising his deep brown eyes with a hoodie and a mask, looks James up and down, assessing him with amusement.
Maximus
You were in the cop car.
The Australian teen establishes eye contact. James pulls up his hoodie sleeves and sighs.
JAMES
So what?
Max, the Australian boy, chuckles and shares a smile, his teeth gleaming. The two boys exchange a tense glance before Maximus charges forward with superhuman speed, slamming James onto the concrete. James wheezes but quickly rises.
JAMES
That hurt.
James shakes himself off. Maximus moves quickly, clutching James' shirt and pulling him in the air.
MAXIMUS
Where's Samual Jonathan Knight?
JAMES
I don't know.
One hand yanks on his hoodie while the other reaches for his mask. The boy pulls back, releasing James from his grip. The other robber, NOAH (Kinley) KNIGHT (15, brown eyes, looking almost identical to Samual's, hidden underneath a ski mask), appears.
NOAH
Leave him, mate.
Another Australian voice. A gust of wind whooshes by James, and in an instant, the two boys vanish. As the cops, including Derek, arrive, James, concealed by his hoodie, nods to them. A crowd with flashing cameras forms, and James instinctively shields his face with his arm before taking off into the sky.
EXT. ALLEYWAY - MERCREDI MATIN CAFE — DAY
INTERCUT - ALLEYWAY AND CAR
James's phone buzzes in his pocket. Irritating, he stops in an alley halfway to school and fishes for his cell phone. His phone ripples again, and he answers. Derek drives while keeping his phone on speaker.
JAMES
What, Derek?
DEREK
Are you okay?
Derek taps his finger against his phone. James scowls.
JAMES
Besides coming across a new super who nearly kicked my ass, I think I'll manage.
James throws his hoodie over his head and lifts it into the sky, dodging finger-pointing and staring.
DEREK
So you saw him too?
Derek groans, tapping his fingers against the back of his phone.
JAMES
Yeah. There were two of them. They wanted something to do with Samual.
Derek growls, seeming frustrated. The tapping continues.
DEREK
What do you think they want?
JAMES
Whatever it is, it can't be anything good.
James lifts further into the sky, almost dropping his phone, but he catches it with telekinesis. Then he floats it back to him.
DEREK
What was that?
James sighs.
JAMES
I dropped my phone.
Derek chuckles.
DEREK
Klutz. Are you heading to school?
JAMES
I'm thinking about grabbing a latte--
Derek groans.
DEREK
--If I have to call Samual, I'm finally telling Dad your secret.
JAMES
You're dead if I even hear you mention my superhero name to Dad.
DEREK
(defensive)
Don't threaten me, Superboy.
JAMES
(irritated)
Don't call me that, Derek.
Derek chuckles. James shifts the phone at his fingertips and palm and floats higher in the sky.
DEREK
Relax, Alpha. I guess at least we can both agree that there is something Samual is not telling us. We need to get it out of him, and you need to get to school. No caffeine for you--
JAMES
--If only someone would stop calling me on my way to class--
DEREK
--Don't mention it.
James chuckles.
JAMES
Good luck, Derek.
END OF INTERCUT.
James flies off toward Phoenix High School.
INT. CLASSROOM #1 - DAY
James rushes down the hallway of Phoenix High School, nearly slipping before coming to an abrupt halt outside his classroom, scattering his papers and books. Mr. Branden, in his early 40s with brown hair and eyes, glares from his desk. As James enters, students' eyes follow, and light chuckles emanate from Mark and his friends in the corner, breaking the awkward silence.
JAMES
Morning, Mr. Branden.
James sets his notebook and papers on the empty desk in the front row.
MR. BRANDEN
Mr. Knight, unless you're looking for a detention slip, I advise you to take your seat.
James huffs.
JAMES
My brother was driving me again, and he got caught up in another morning police chase. He didn't have time to stop. I have a note.
James fumbles with his bag, pulling it open with force, and the contents explode to the ground. Mr. Branden pushes his glasses into place on his nose, annoyed by James.
MR. BRANDEN
That is when you catch the morning bus. I'm giving you one last warning.
Students laugh and chatter. MIA REIGNSON, 16, a gorgeous dark blonde hair and blue-eyed girl sitting in front of him, speaks up. She's Mark's cousin. James doesn't mind.
Mia
I guess he's supposed to jump out of a moving car in the middle of the chase?
MARK REIGNSON, 16, a cocky dark blonde-haired and hazel-eyed jock with a brazen attitude, slaps hands with one of his comrades.
Mark
I'd pay to see that.
Mr. Branden glares at Mark.
MR. BRANDEN
Knock it off, Mark. Take your seat, Mr. Knight. You're dismissed.
James reaches down, collecting his things from the floor. He finds the note and places it on Mr. Branden's desk. He kneels to order more of his items from the ground.
WHACK!
His head SLAMS into the desk in front of him, causing an eruption of laughter from his classmates.
Mr. Branden silences the class. James walks off towards an empty seat in the back row.
James stares at a pencil, watching as it ROLLS off Mia's desk and into his foot. Mia flips her long, blonde hair behind her shoulder and swivels in his direction.
MIA
Are you going to get that, James?
James melts against his desk, lost in her deep blue eyes.
JAMES
Well, uh...
James can't quite get words out. He blushes as he leans down to retrieve her pencil.
JAMES
H-here's your pencil.
Handing her pencil back, he feels weak. Mia turns around in her seat. Mark curses incoherently under his breath a few desks away. James returns to his work.
Mia suddenly turns back around. Amusement flashes on her face, and she smiles.
MIA
Halloween is in a few weeks. The blood drive will be here soon, and we're looking for helpful recruits to join the team this year.
James's eyes widen, staring into the open room. A devilish smile manifests on Mia's lips.
MIA
Are you going to answer me, space cadet, or leave me hanging?
JAMES
Uh, I can't...
MIA
Can't what?
James looks confused, overloaded with questions from his crush.
JAMES
Uh, yep! I can't wait to be there.
James melts into his desk.
INT. CAFETERIA - DAY
The cafeteria is quiet, except for some soft chatter in the background. James sits alone near the exit, practicing deep breathing. A few tables away, Mark catches James's glare but pretends not to notice as he casually takes an apple from another student's tray. The student responds with annoyance but avoids an argument.
Suddenly, James's phone chirps, and he reaches for it.
INTERCUT — CAFETERIA AND LABORATORY
SAMUAL
Are you okay?
James taps the table gently and thinks of a response.
Samual runs on a treadmill with wires attached to his head, gaining superhuman-like speed, but he halts before it can reach that stage.
JAMES
Besides having a bruised ego, yeah.
SAMUAL
Ha, too bad your powers don't work on bruised egos.
JAMES
Not even funny, Samual.
James shuts down his phone after feeling someone standing behind him.
END INTERCUT
Mark grins behind James, looking over his shoulder with a few pals.
MARK
Who are you texting this time, Knight?
JAMES
(Irritated)
Go away.
Mark's eyes drive toward James's phone screen.
MARK
Was that your uncle? I can't stand that freak. He's just like--
James clutches his tray's sides, fingers digging into the plastic, and grits his teeth.
JAMES
--Shut up, Mark.
Everyone in the cafeteria has their eyes trained on Mark and James now. Mark clicks his tongue.
MARK
Was that my cousin you were talking to earlier?
Mark leans casually against the table bench. James' fists curl even more into the plastic. Mark tilts his head to the side and sucks in a sharp breath.
MARK
I don't believe she's your type, honestly.
(long beat)
What's up with your father? Still, a lowlife who my father should have kicked off the force years ago? And your brother? He's a great cop but just a dog on a leash.
Irritated at Mark, James quickly gathers his backpack and forgets his phone from the table, walking towards the door.
MARK
You forgot something, freak.
James cautiously turns on his heels. Mark's grin widens, waving James's phone in the air. James paces back to the table, dropping his bag to the floor.
JAMES
What do you want from me, Mark?
MARK
To mess around with you a little.
James grabs at his phone, but Mark pulls it above his head. He stands over him by 2 to 3 inches.
MARK
(Grinning)
Let's see who's texting you.
Mark touches the home button, and James's screen comes to life. The phone chirps again. He pounds his four-digit code and searches for the most recent text.
MARK
Oh, look. Daddy Knight is reminding you to take out the trash tonight. Maybe we can help him with that right now.
Mark and his buddies snicker.
MARK
You should stop unlocking your phone in front of some of my friends.
He lowers the phone to James's height. James snatches the phone, grabbing only air as Mark raises the phone higher.
MARK
Why don't you jump, Knight?
James jumps high in the air, almost floating, and drops unsuccessfully. Mark tosses the phone between his friends, playing a warped game of hot potato and monkey in the middle as James races back and forth for his phone.
MARK
Come on, Knight. You're faster than that.
Gareth chucks the phone at Mark. James intercepts the phone, watching it slide across the cafeteria ground. Mark's friend gripped James's arms, holding him before Mark.
MARK
Are you going to fetch that, Freak?
James clenches his fist, nails digging into his palm. He breaks free from the group of boys, and his punch lands on Mark's face without hesitation. Mark wipes the blood from his lips, smirking and chuckling.
MARK
(whispers)
Thanks, Knight.
James collects his things and walks off to grab his phone from the other side of the cafeteria before leaving.
INT. JAMES' HOUSE — AFTERNOON
James steps into his lavish mansion. Matthew occupies the living room while Samual and Derek lounge on the couch by the corner chair. Their attention locks on James as he slams his bag down, entering with averted eyes.
MATTHEW
James. Everett. Knight!
Matthew greets James with a scowl and pats his foot on the floor.
JAMES
What?
MATTHEW
(furious)
You know damn-well what, James. You always get into more trouble than I can clean up.
JAMES
Dad, you don't know what happened.
James leans against the railing of the staircase, huffing.
MATTHEW
(Scolding)
James!
Samual and Derek part on the couch, and James sits snug between them.
JAMES
(Mocking)
Dad!
James bites his tongue for his own sake, keeping his anger inside. James and his dad lock eyes. They shoot glares at each other.
DEREK
I think he's right, James.
James glares at his brother.
JAMES
(Angered mumbling)
Of course, Dad's right.
James clutches his phone in his superhuman grip.
JAMES
He's always right.
James clenches his phone until it shatters, eliciting widened eyes from Samual and Derek. They swiftly grab the phone from his hand before his father spots it. Reluctantly, James lets go, and Derek conceals the phone on the couch as Samual distracts Matthew.
SAMUAL
When does your shift start?
MATTHEW
It started ten minutes ago.
James' father's eyes drift. Matthew adjusts his utility belt while Derek reluctantly watches James yanking on his gun holster.
DEREK
(Whispering)
You owe me.
James flips his hood above his shoulders, but Derek quickly pulls it back down before his dad can see him.
MATTHEW
I don't want to see you fight anymore, especially Mark Reignson.
Matthew adjusts his badge on his shoulder. With large, bloodshot eyes, James's father quickly steps to the door and leaves.
JAMES
(Grunting)
I don't owe you anything, Derek. I do a lot already.
James digs through the couch, feeling for his cell phone. Instead, Derek and Sam glare at James.
JAMES
What do you guys want from me?
SAMUAL
Maybe I should train you better to learn how to control this. Can I test you in the laboratory, James?
Derek's pout brightens. James yanks his phone from the couch cushions, watching Derek stand.
DEREK
I've got to go to work. Stay calm before you break something other than your phone.
Derek pats James' back comfortably and walks off towards the door.
SAMUAL
Then, there were two. What happens when your father, brother, or I can't save you, and you get into trouble with the sheriff? What happens if you lose control of your strength and your father notices? Or worse, if you accidentally hurt or kill someone?
JAMES
(shouting)
Samual!
James sucks in a sharp breath.
JAMES
What about Dad? If he finds out--
James' eyes shift to the floor. Samual chews on his nails, looking nervous.
SAMUAL
--Your powers are dangerous and not something you should mess with, not to mention--
JAMES
--I guess.
SAMUAL
Not, I guess. That attitude may work with your father, but not me. Take these powers seriously. Okay, bud?
JAMES
Alright, I get it.
SAMUAL
So, do you want to go down to the lab?
James nods, taking a deep breath.
JAMES
Yeah.
SAMUAL
Good, I'll meet you down there.
Samual smiles. James races off towards the basement.
INT. BASEMENT LABORATORY - DAY
In a well-organized room filled with scientific equipment, Samual operates between a computer and laptop, collecting data. James, with a metal band measuring his brainwave frequency, effortlessly hovers over an eight-hundred-pound fridge. Samual tests James's strength and endurance by tossing weights, and James gracefully catches them mid-air.
SAMUAL
You almost didn't catch those.
JAMES
Yeah.
SAMUAL
Come on. You're a natural.
Samual throws a small granola bar at James. He reluctantly catches it before plunging out of the air and everything else crashing to the ground.
James rubs his temples, feeling drained as he pushes his feet.
SAMUAL
Again!
James shoots Samual his best death glare, dusting debris from his shirt.
JAMES
Later. If I do any more, I might kill someone.
James raises an eyebrow in Samual's direction, but Samual is unappeased.
SAMUAL
I heard you and Derek made two more friends this morning.
JAMES
You mean the supers? Yeah, I may or may not have bumped into two of them. You know, they asked for you.
Samual quivers and pauses his work.
SAMUAL
What did they want?
JAMES
One guy nearly kicked my ass, and the other saved me from a hardcore beating. I don't know if that should relieve me or not.
Samual points a pen at James. Then he drops it to the desk.
SAMUAL
You're going to stop those kids.
Samual intensifies, forcing himself to look up from the safety of his desk.
JAMES
Do you want to bet? Dad told me you still talk to that ex-superhero, Golden Goliath, back in Los Angeles. Maybe he could help, too.
James glares at Samual, lifting him from his seat—unfazed, Samual hovers, pulling his arms over his chest.
SAMUAL
Put me down, James.
James pushes up, pulling Samual closer until the two are face-to-face.
JAMES
(Mocking)
You're going to talk to Golden Goliath and help, too.
James drops from the sky, landing gracefully on the floor, letting Samual fall into his arms.
SAMUAL
I'm sure I can help, but Golden Goliath is retired. He is proud of you, though.
JAMES
Is he, now?
Samual shrugs.
SAMUAL
Yep... Get your homework done before your father gets home. I've got some work to do downstairs.
EXT. ROOF - NIGHT
James sits on the roof, gazing up at the stars, his legs tucked into his chest and his hands in his hoodie. Derek slides through James' window and sits beside him on the roof.
DEREK
You okay?
James sucks in a breath.
JAMES
Nope.
James exhales a sharp breath. Derek wraps his arm around James' shoulder.
DEREK
What's wrong?
James shifts on the roof, his breath freezing the cool air.
JAMES
Why couldn't Dad, even Samual, or you get superpowers?
Derek was silent for another moment, and his grip tightened around James's shoulder, offering brotherly comfort.
DEREK
Do you believe everything happens for a reason? Maybe you have these superpowers for a purpose, and maybe the rest of us didn't get them because that was meant to happen as well--
Derek sighs.
DEREK
--Besides, being normal sucks too.
Matthew stands below, looking up at his two young sons.
MATTHEW
What are you two doing on the roof?
Derek and James both look down at their tired father. They don't even notice when he pulls into the driveway.
DEREK
We were talking. Do you need help with groceries, Dad?
MATTHEW
Sure.
Matthew waves his sons down. Derek races to the window and into the house, and James peers over the side of our two-story home. His father yells at him when he flips off the roof.
MATTHEW
(Yelling)
Don't jump off the roof, James.
James lands on the pavement with a superhero-like stance, just inches away from his father, catching him by surprise. Derek rushes out of the doorway and snatches the grocery bags from his father's hands.
James strides over to his father's Suburban, removing four bags from the back seat. Behind their father, he rolls his eyes at Derek and slams the car door forcefully, triggering the car alarm.
JAMES
Shit.
Matthew spins around to see what has happened. Fortunately, James doesn't scratch the door's metal, but the car rocks. He silenced the vehicle, pressing a button on his keys.
MATTHEW
Seriously, James?!
His hands rest on the car's hood, attempting to stop it from swaying. James presses his fingertips on the car's roof, and it quickly stops moving.
MATTHEW
In the house, now.
Derek shrugs and winks as James meets Derek's gaze. He still clutches his grocery bags tightly.
JAMES
Don't even think about it.
Derek shrugs once more, a smug look on his face, and he leads James into the house.
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Samual pulls brookies from the oven with a potholder and places them on the stove. Derek and James sit at the countertop while their dad stands in the doorway, his hip resting against the doorframe.
DEREK
How much do you want to bet, Mark is losing it.
Derek and James chuckle.
DEREK
I heard he got braces.
JAMES
Good. Hopefully, they wired his mouth shut, too.
MATTHEW
Both of you, knock it off.
Matthew walks into the kitchen to the fridge, where he pulls out two beers while Samual loosens the brookies from the pan and takes a bite, setting it on the counter.
SAMUAL
Mark is a dick, but that doesn't mean he can't protect his cousin. Do you remember when I punched Jack McCoy for Henry?
Matthew snorts and gulps a swig of his drink.
MATTHEW
Yeah. You're lucky Jack's Dad didn't sue. Dad was so pissed, but that son of a bitch deserved it.
Before Matthew exchanges a beer bottle for a brookie, Samual gives him the "See what I mean" look. He then turns to face James. Matthew looks James in the eyes. Samual sets two brookies in front of Derek and James.
MATTHEW
Don't get any ideas.
James gives his father an anxious grimace and bites into his cookie.
JAMES
I wasn't planning on it.
DEREK
I'm out.
Seizing his cookie from the counter, Derek heads toward the doorway. He swiftly devours his "brookie" and playfully fires finger guns at James.
JAMES
I guess I'm out, too.
Derek stops him in the hallway as James leaves the room.
DEREK
You're not coming with me tonight. I need some time for myself.
James turned to the wide staircase and stomps up the steps.
JAMES
(From the top stair)
Sounds like a plan. Good night.
DEREK
I'll be back in a few hours.
JAMES
Cool.
Then, James races to his bedroom while Derek leaves to patrol.
INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
Samual sits on the edge of James' bed, his eyes on his cellphone screen, his tongue poking out between his bottom and top lips as he concentrates on something.
JAMES
Samual!
James prods Samual with his toes to get his attention.
SAMUAL
What's up, James?
Samual puts his hand on James' foot and looks over at James after he prods him one more time.
SAMUAL
You know, Mark could have pressed charges, right?
JAMES
(smirking)
He could have, but he didn't.
Samual sighs.
SAMUAL
Why do you think he didn't?
James reaches across his bed and grabs his phone off his side dresser.
JAMES
I'm not sure, Samual. Maybe the son of a bitch is waiting for the right time to tell everyone I'm Alpha? You know he knows my secret.
SAMUAL
You don't say.
Samual cocks his head to the side, lips pressed together in a smug grimace. Samual then exhales deeply and pats James' ankle as he sinks into the mattress's side.
SAMUAL
Bullies all have a deeper motivation for bullying. If he knows about your abilities and hasn't mentioned them or blackmailed you yet, he's probably not as horrible as you think.
JAMES
You don't know Mark that well.
James hurriedly scrolls through his social media page before turning off the screen, listening for a click, and putting it aside.
SAMUAL
And you think you do? I know Mark is a jerk, but it could be worse.
Samual pats James' shins and stands up—long beat.
SAMUAL
I'm working on something that I need to get back to doing. You're welcome to come down and observe.
James exhales and relaxes into his mattress, tucking his legs.
JAMES
Give me a minute, and I'll be down there.
Samual moves to the door with a nod in his head.
SAMUAL
I'll meet you downstairs.
James nods. Samual then closes the door.
INT. DEREK'S COP CAR - DAY
James slumps against Derek's car. He looks up at his brother as he pulls up to the school.
James's eyes wander to NICHOLAS GRANT, standing before the double doors. He talks to NOAH (Knight) KINLEY, 15. The boys exchange a few words before Nick walks off into the building.
James looks over at Derek. Derek shrugs.
DEREK
At least it's not Mark.
James shoves Derek against his door before opening it, watching him shoot James a dirty look. James walks off towards the school building.
NOAH
Hey. Do you know that guy?
Noah greets James at the door, stopping him as his hand curls around the door handle.
James sucks in a breath and does a once-over.
JAMES
Sure, we've spoken.
NOAH
He's a cop.
Noah's eyes dragged to Derek's patrol vehicle, parked in the drop-off zone. The front bumper is pushed in from the night before.
JAMES
Yeah, He's also my brother.
Before James opens the door, the two boys stare at each other, walking in.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
Mark pushes through the double doors with his friends trailing behind. James' fist curls around his locker door, creating grooves, and he lets go, avoiding stares.
Two of Mark's friends stuff James's head inside his locker. Another kid sweeps James' feet from beneath him. James falls to the floor, sitting on his bottom.
Mark grins, showing off his brand new TOP AND BOTTOM braces.
MARK
Good morning.
Mark ruffles James' hair and slams James's head against the back of the lockers. James looks up at him, digging his nails into his fists, avoiding blood while taking reluctant breaths.
JAMES
What do you want?
Mark's lips grow wide into a grin. James slides his knees into his chest.
MARK
We're just having some fun. Since I got my Toreador shots and can't go to the gym, you're the next best thing.
JAMES
(Mumbling)
Great.
James breathes in heavily and shuts his eyes, balling his fists again.
MARK
Why don't you tell people the truth? Why you're so freakishly strong?
Mark pushes James's head hard with his fist.
MARK
(Demanding)
Do it, Knight.
Mark's knee pinned James's chest against the lockers.
MARK
Or do you need me to tell them?
The bell practically saves James. Mark smacks James' head into the lockers one last time. James's hands push into the ground, creating grooves in the concrete floor.
MARK
Bye, Knight.
Mark chuckles, leading his comrades off to class.
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY
Mr. Branden monitors James as he walks into the homeroom.
MR. BRANDEN
Glad to see you, Mr. Knight.
James slams his bag onto a desk in the front row.
JAMES
Yep.
James pulls out his notebook and pen. Mr. Branden looks towards the door as Mark barrels through just as the bell rings. His friends follow close behind.
Mr. Branden stares at Mark from under his paper for a moment. Mr. Branden adjusts some papers on his desk and pushes his glasses into place.
MR. BRANDEN
Take a seat, Mr. Reignson.
Mark and his schoolmates watch James as they return to their seats.
James twirls his pencil aimlessly above the paper, unnoticed and disregarded by everyone—except MAXIMUS (Max Knight) KINLEY, the new student with an imposing Australian accent. As Max enters, his gaze meets James, who instinctively tightens his grip on the pencil.
MR. BRANDEN
You must be Maximus.
Maximus dodges James' eyes. His brown eyes stay trained on Mark.
MAX
Yeah, and you must be Mr. Branden.
Mr. Branden looks up from his papers to look at Max.
MR. BRANDEN
Yeah.
Max walks off, taking refuge in an empty area near Mark.
MR. BRANDEN
Morning announcements! As I can see, everything seems normal, other than a blood drive that the lovely Marina and Miss Reignson have been putting together.
James looks back at Mia, catching a glance from her before her eyes draw towards the door with everyone else. James' eyes lock on Noah. Noah glares at James before averting his eyes as he approaches Mr. Branden's desk.
NOAH
Mr. Branden, right?
Mr. Branden looked up at the boy.
MR. BRANDEN
Yep. Take a seat, Mr... Uh...
Mr. Branden checks his papers.
MR. BRANDEN
Kinley, right? Are you and Maximus related?
Noah sighs.
NOAH
(annoyed)
Yep.
Walking to the desk next to James, Noah throws his stuff down. He glances over at James, digging his palms into his desk. James ignores Noah.
The bell rings not long after. James arranges his notebooks in his bag and walks out, feeling he's being followed.
INT. HALLWAY - LOCKER - present day - NOON
Mark reaches out, shoving James back against the rows of lockers, and he chuckles.
MARK
Freak. You're lucky my Toradol shots are wearing off, or I would kick your ass, Knight.
James grabs the back of his head and ducks as the new boy comes in for a second round.
MAX
A bit of an idiot, too.
Mark and Max leave James stunned on the floor. Through blurred vision, James watches Noah, who grumbles something incoherent at him. Confused, James recovers from the ringing in his ears, looking up at Noah.
JAMES
What?
James is thrown back against the lockers hard again. His head swims in a sea of colors as he dives to the ground. Noah walks on while James catches his breath, confused.
Noah slams James's head against the lockers again. James slumps to the ground. His head fills with a kaleidoscope of colors.
NOAH
(yelling)
Get up!
James barely moves a muscle.
NOAH
Get up, James!
James sits up, leaning against the lockers, while Noah disappears before his eyes as the overhead warning bell rings.
INT. HOME - NIGHT
James enters the kitchen, steals a half-eaten sandwich from Derek's fingertips, and takes a bite.
DEREK
I was eating that.
Samual stands in the opposing corner of the room, assessing the scene with an exhale. James bites into the sandwich and opens the fridge, digging for a soda. He grips the bottle tight in his fist and flicks the cap from the top. Derek snatches the soda from James's fingertips before he can sip.
DEREK
This is mine now.
James nods in agreement and lets the soda bottle go.
JAMES
Anything new?
James takes another bite of his sandwich. Samual leans against the countertop, intrigued but quiet, observing his nephews. Derek sips his soda, breaking the science.
DEREK
Radio silence for now.
Derek looks at Samual.
DEREK
What's up with you, Samual? You're quiet today.
James looks at Samual. He is smiling wide and leans gently against the countertop.
SAMUAL
You tell me? Are you happy about something or just in a good mood, James?
JAMES
(excited)
Mia talked to me.
DEREK
That's what this is?
James' smile grows.
JAMES
Yep.
DEREK
Superboy has a crush? I didn't think that was possible.
Derek takes another sip of his beverage.
JAMES
Don't call me that.
Derek grins wide-eyed and pats James's shoulder.
DEREK
Alright, Alpha.
Derek raises his hands, a cocky smirk forming across his lips.
JAMES
Sure.
SAMUAL
Any power gain?
James grins, taking one more bite of the sandwich before he lays it off to the side.
JAMES
Maybe?
James rests his palm harder against the countertop, trying to pull himself onto a stool. An unintentional chunk of the marble countertop breaks off in one piece. Samual and Derek wince.
DEREK
Dad is going to kill you. Did you already have caffeine or something today?
JAMES
Yeah, why?
Derek groans.
DEREK
JAMES!
Derek gestures at the chunks of marble and debris covering the floor.
DEREK
You become the goddamn Incredible Hulk when you consume caffeine!
JAMES
Yeah, no kidding, genius.
Derek and Samual frown.
SAMUAL
Alright, Mr. High-and-mighty. Why do you keep sabotaging your powers if you don't like them?
JAMES
Samual!
Samual shifts, pulling himself upright.
SAMUAL
You need to calm down before you hurt someone, bud.
JAMES
I'm working on it.
James unintentionally tears off another chunk of the marble slab.
JAMES
(Panicked)
I can't control it!
DEREK
Take a deep breath, James. Do you need to go for a walk?
James takes in a huge breath and lets air from his lungs. Derek and Samual sigh.
JAMES
Is right now a good time?
DEREK
I'm free right now if you want to go. Just don't break anything else.
James laughs.
JAMES
Sure.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT
Derek humbles himself, stretching his calves as he joins James at his side. The two young men are nearly halfway into the city, walking three miles downtown in a quiet neighborhood.
JAMES
What's up?
DEREK
I was going to ask you the same question.
Derek breathes, letting his breath fog the cold, breezy late afternoon night atmosphere.
JAMES
You know how you and Samual know my secret, but Dad doesn't?
Derek sighs, acknowledging James, and they proceed with their light jog.
DEREK
I'm sure Dad knows your secret. He doesn't want to accept it yet. Remember when you were eight, and he caught both of us in the garage? You lifted his car, and that's how you smashed the back end of Dad's police cruiser?
James shakes his head, but he can picture the scene for a moment.
INT. GARAGE — FLASHBACK — DAY
Derek and James quietly open the back garage door and sneak in. James is roughly eight, and Derek is about 12.
They first spot their dad's police cruiser parked in the middle of the garage.
DEREK
I bet you can't lift the back of Dad's car.
JAMES
You'll owe me a week's worth of allowance if I can.
DEREK
Deal, but you have to use your super strength. It doesn't count if you use your...
JAMES
Telekinesis?
DEREK
Yeah. Something like that.
James grabs the back bumper of his dad's cruiser. He lifts with his legs and upper body. The rear end of the bumper screeches and bends as it pulls off the ground with ease.
DEREK
Holy—
Derek stares in shock. He backs up. James lifts the car further until the vehicle's front lifts from the floor.
Footsteps pound the floor from inside. Derek panics, and James still lifts the car higher and higher. The back door swings open, and a shocked Matthew opens the garage door; his face flushes with shock as a coffee mug slips from his hand in slow motion.
MATTHEW
Wow.
He freezes in place. Derek chuckles, and James drops the back of the car. The car aggressively slams to the ground, bouncing on the tires.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - AFTERNOON
Derek kicks a pebble into the middle of the street.
JAMES
Does Dad know?
DEREK
Have a seat.
Derek gestures to the curbside, and James walks over. He sits next to James on the roadside.
DEREK
James, you can do the impossible, and sometimes, when people don't want to believe the impossible can happen, people ignore it... You may be invincible, James, but you can still get hurt, and I don't want to see that, and neither does Dad nor Samual. That's why Dad doesn't want to admit you have powers.
JAMES
Thanks.
Both guys stand and witness a hooded person hurtling from above, crashing onto the pavement like a missile. The impact leaves the boy unconscious, but the ground remains steady. Derek and James quickly dash towards the fallen figure.
JAMES
What do we do?
INT. HOSPITAL - DAY
James enters the hospital room. Loud machines monitor Mark's heart. Nurses bandaged his chest thickly, and they piled the countertops high with cards and flowers. Mark looks pale and weak.
MARK
What is he doing here?
Derek, who takes notes, standing in the corner, dressed in his complete cop uniform, exchanges looks with James.
JAMES
I was there when you fell.
MARK
(Wheezing)
Of course, you were.
James crosses his arms over his chest, seeming uncomfortable.
DEREK
Mr. Reignson, I just want you to know you are not under arrest. We only have some questions for you.
Mark washes his lips with his tongue and rolls his eyes.
MARK
Why would I be?
Mark glowers at Derek.
MARK
It wasn't my fault.
This time he looks at James, coughing in pain.
JAMES
I don't want to be here either, Mark.
Mark frowns.
MARK
Then, why don't you leave?
Awkward tension fills the silent room.
DEREK
Look, Mr. Reignson. We're just trying to figure out who did this to you.
Mark shifts in bed, wincing in pain.
MARK
How do you know he's not standing in the room right now?
Mark wheezes, glaring at James. Derek looks at James, making a connection. James stands uncomfortably in the doorway.
DEREK
Mr. Reignson, did you see anything you could describe to help us?
Mark coughs again.
MARK
Maybe. I mean, I don't know. Who or whatever it was just scooped me up, and all I remember is falling moments later. You would freak out, too, if that happened to you, Mr. Knight.
Derek stands in front of Mark's hospital bed with his digital notepad and a stylus pen.
DEREK
I know how you feel, Mr. Reignson, but for me to make a statement, I need details.
Mark grunts.
MARK
Your brother needs to leave.
Mark points at James.
JAMES
Fine, I'll be outside.
James steps out, ready to run off, when Marks's father walks by.
MR. REIGNSON
Hey, your Marks' friend?
JAMES
Sure.
MR. REIGNSON
Name?
James sighs.
James
James Knight.
MR. REIGNSON
Your Matthews' other son?
JAMES
Yeah.
Mr. Reignson huffs, ignoring James as he walks into the room, grunting at Derek. James turns and walks off downstairs to the hospital.
INT. HOME - DAY
Derek walks into the living room. James lays across the couch, sprawled out.
JAMES
Did he say anything?
DEREK
About you? No. About the case? Maybe? He said he saw someone wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask--
JAMES
(Interrupting Derek)
—You know he knows my secret, right?
Derek shoves James' feet from the couch and sits, snacking on a bag of cheese puffs.
DEREK
I picked up on that.
JAMES
He's also an asshole.
DEREK
I picked up on that too. Why do you let him bother you again?
James sighs, leaning back against the couch.
JAMES
I don't know. Remember, he's a bad guy, and I'm supposed to stop the bad guys?
Derek rolls his eyes. James readjusts on the couch.
DEREK
Well, he won't be bothering you for a while. He'll be in the hospital for about a week if he's lucky.
JAMES
You mean if I'm lucky.
James steals a puff from Derek, popping it in his mouth. Derek frowns.
DEREK
Why didn't you catch him?
JAMES
Because I didn't want to.
DEREK
Alright, Alpha. You're supposed to catch people falling out of the sky. Not let them fall to their death.
James raises a cocky eyebrow.
JAMES
For Mark? No. For others? Yes.
Derek pops a puff in his mouth.
DEREK
Funny.
Derek and James settle on the couch.
INT. HOSPITAL - MARK'S ROOM - DAY
Mark lies on the gurney, bandages, and casts covering his body. MAXIMUS (Max) KINLEY KNIGHT, a young boy with curly hair and brown eyes, stands in the doorway, nearly inhaling a pudding cup from Mark's dinner.
Max
You're an idiot, Mark.
Mark shifts in bed and moans.
Mark
(Through groans and wheezes)
My dad's the chief. You should know this through your research on my father and me. He can get you anything you want within reason.
Max walks forward, places his palm on Mark's broken foot, and squeezes. He crushes the empty pudding cup in his hands as his fists pull tight. Mark squirms in pain but resists screaming.
Max
I want Samual Jonathan Knight.
Max stops squeezing and glares at Mark's meeting gazes.
Mark
He's a loser. His nephew, James, has superpowers, and I figured he had something to do with it, but you have powers too, which might mean the freak show might be who you want to look into—
Mark whimpers in pain again as Max squeezes Mark's shin.
Max
(Raises voice)
I'm not a bloody freak!
Bones crack under Max's pressure, and Max lets go when the beeping monitors wail. Suddenly, a nurse walks in while Mark groans in pain. Max stands there watching with an "Oh shit" glare.
Nurse
Who are you?
Beat.
Instead of confronting the woman, Max throws on his hoodie, and races off down the hallway superhumanly as papers fly, and in seconds, he's out of the hospital.
I/E. PARKING LOT IN COP CAR - NIGHT
Derek and James sit in a parked car in an abandoned parking lot, listening to the police radio. Derek shuts off the radio, looking to James for guidance.
DEREK
If we're going to do this, I don't want you making a mess. Do you understand? No dents in my hood.
Uneven lines pull at James' lips, and he sits up.
JAMES
(Mumbling)
I've got this.
SERIES OF QUICK SHOTS:
- Derek turns the radio up.
- Derek is slumping against the side of the car.
- James is drawing on the icy window.
End of quick shots.
A shadow lurks outside, and they both sit up straight in their seats.
DEREK
What the hell was that?
Derek catches himself gripping the steering wheel and takes hold of his walkie.
DEREK
10-4, a shadow is moving outside the vehicle.
A deep laugh rumbled from the other end of the walkie from MR. REIGNSON, Mark's father and the police chief.
MR. REIGNSON
Are you kidding me, Knight? A shadow? Get back to work.
Derek and James lose signal with him. The gloomy silhouette worms closer to the patrol car.
DEREK
Damn it, James. Get out there.
James fumbles for the door, nearly ripping the handle off and shutting the door.
Derek looks irritated. James stands out in the cold, waiting for the super to reappear. Derek watches James pace. The shadow seems to be nowhere nearby. James wanders back to the car but sees something out of the corner of his eye.
Max appears behind James, grabbing his lower waist. James lets go of the door as he's flung across the parking lot and into a nearby dumpster. He glimpses short curly locks and deep auburn eyes, revealing Max, the teenage boy with similar features to the young six-year-old who urged James to drink the serum ten years prior. However, James doesn't get a good look.
JAMES
That hurt—
James stretches and picks himself off the ground.
James
—A lot.
James holds his breath, watching the super move towards Derek and the car. He peels himself from the ground, charging for the contour in the dark.
James pulls the super backward, slamming him to the ground. His face flushes with pure fear. The super doesn't flinch a muscle.
The super suspends James a few inches off the ground with powerful telekinesis. The teen reaches out toward Derek's patrol car, and it rumbles to life. Derek looks at James, panicking as he steps hard on the brakes. It's no use against the teenage super. The car pushes forward, barreling towards James. The super jump out of the way as the vehicle hits James' side, knocking their breath out. James lies on the floor, taking consistent breaths. The super disappears. Derek shut off the car and pulled open the door, rushing to James's side.
DEREK
Are you OK?
Derek leans over James, giving little effort to help him push the car off of his side. James sucks in a sharp breath. He leans down, holding out his hand, and hoists James off the floor.
JAMES
Yep, I'm good. I'm bruised. That's all.
DEREK
Good.
He takes a hesitant beat. Then brother rage builds.
Derek
Sam, Dad, and I are going to kill you. What the hell, James?
Derek watches the cold air freeze his breath, shoving James in brotherly anger; James collapses to the ground, wiping his face with his palm.
JAMES
(Deflating against the concrete)
What, Derek?
DEREK
He could have killed you or me. He could have killed both of us.
James sits up. Derek hits James's chest. James shoots him a dagger look.
JAMES
This wasn't my fault. I simply recall you and Sam encouraging this two hours ago.
James pulls himself from the ground, dusting scuffed tire debris from his shirt.
JAMES
I'm not Superman, you know.
DEREK
Superboy or not, Dad will kill you if Sam or I don't.
JAMES
Give me your undershirt then. Dad probably won't notice.
James gestures to Derek's uniform.
DEREK
Are you kidding me? You have tire tracks all over your pants, too. If Dad is home, he will notice you no matter what.
JAMES
(Growling)
Derek!
Derek bites his lip. James focuses on his car. The car hums to life.
JAMES
Either you take it off or deal with Mark's dad about your car.
Derek gives in quickly, gripping his collar.
DEREK
OK! Okay. You win.
Derek slips off his top layer, then his bottom, shivering in the cold. Derek is muscular, resembling a slightly older version of James with shaved facial hair, barely visible, and deep blue eyes. His detailed six-pack contracts as he tosses James his undershirt.
JAMES
Thanks.
DEREK
I'm doing this for you. You're not as intimidating as those newbie supers.
JAMES
Oh yeah?
Derek chuckles.
DEREK
You're outdated, bud.
JAMES
Really?
Derek licks his teeth clean. His arm wraps around James' neck, and he pulls him into a hug, ruffling his hair.
DEREK
Yeah. Now, get in the car.
Derek throws his shirt over his chest and fastens the buttons. James pulls the undershirt over his head. Derek meets James on the opposite side of the car and opens the door, hoping in the driver's seat.
DEREK
Dad is going to kill you when he finds out about tonight.
JAMES
The captain always goes down with the ship.
Derek rolls his eyes, turns on the ignition, and they pull out of the parking lot.
INT. JAMES' HOME - NIGHT
Sam stands in the living room, arguing with Derek. James sits on the couch with his head resting against his arm, leaning on the sofa's edge. Their father is somewhere off in the kitchen, grabbing a beer.
SAM
Are you crazy, Derek? The super could have killed both of you.
DEREK
(Interrupting Sam)
He knows what he's doing, Sam.
James dives headfirst into the side of the couch, ignoring his uncle and brother. Sam and Derek were only protecting James. Matthew suddenly walks into the room from the kitchen, slumping down in his chair in the corner by the window with his beer. The room briefly grows silent. James peers up at his father, worrying about his father overhearing the previous conversation.
MATTHEW
What exactly did he do?
Matthew takes a swig of his drink. James' face flushes red, hoping his father is too drunk to notice the dirt lines down his pants. Sam, Derek, and James freeze.
DEREK
I took him with me tonight.
MATTHEW
And—
DEREK
—A super attacked us, but we're fine, Dad. I promise you.
MATTHEW
Damn it, Derek. How often have I told you not to get your brother involved in your police business?
James stands and steps forward.
JAMES
It was my fault. I asked to come along.
Sam moans.
MATTHEW
(Scolding)
James, you know better too. You're not a superhero. You can't just run around pretending to be one, either.
James swallows hard. All three men freeze again.
DEREK
Who said anything about being a superhero?
Matthew huffs.
MATTHEW
Go to your rooms.
Derek follows James out of the room, raising his eyebrow at him with a grin in his direction when he is paying attention.
JAMES
Yeah, yeah. He knows.
James and Derek part ways at the top of the steps while heading to their rooms, and James shuts his door.
INT. JAMES BEDROOM - DAY
James' eyes slam open to bright light, his eyes reflecting fluorescent purple fading to blue. Derek sits at James' bedside, pushing against his chest. James lays against his back, concealing a smirk behind the covers.
JAMES
Damn it, Derek.
James shoves Derek across his room, catching him mid-air against the wall as he yanks the covers from his bare torso.
DEREK
(wheezing)
Let go.
Derek collapses from the wall, holding his chest. James heaves himself out of bed.
JAMES
Don't do that. Especially after last night.
James runs to the bathroom with his clothes.
DEREK
Yeah, we need to talk about that.
Derek takes a deep breath. Down the hall, James slams the bathroom door.
I/E. DEREK'S COP CAR — DAY.
Derek drives with the police radio turned low. He focuses on the road, looking over at James every once in and while.
DEREK
Sam is right, and I don't want you to fight that guy.
James sighs.
JAMES
Derek, I'm fine. Not a scratch.
Derek watches the road, huffing under his breath.
DEREK
He rammed you over with my car, James, with me in it. I don't want you fighting him.
James scoffs.
JAMES
Derek, I'm practically invincible. I can take it.
Derek grunts in frustration.
DEREK
But what if you're not, James?
Int. High school - moRNING
Walking halfway down the long corridor, James bumps into Mia. She falls, along with her paperwork, and James springs into action, catching her in his broad arms before she hits the ground.
MIA
James!
James grins sheepishly and pulls her to her feet. Rubbing her forehead, she smiles back.
JAMES
Sorry about that.
James blushes, rubbing at his neck.
MIA
It's okay, James.
James leans down, helping her re-stack the pages.
MIA
Do you have a moment after school? I need a study partner, and I wondered if you were the guy for that.
James licks his lips, looking confused.
JAMES
I have to talk to my dad and uncle first, but—
MIA
(Interrupting)
—So, I'll walk with you to your place after school?
JAMES
Sure.
James bites the tip of his tongue.
MIA
Great, I'll meet you by the tree in front.
Mia grins, scrunching her nose. James hands her the last page, lifting his head to look into her deep blue eyes.
MIA
Thanks.
EXT. JAMES HOUSE - DAY
Just like James discusses, Mia meets James outside the school that afternoon. They walk, slow-paced, down the sidewalk. They walk side by side.
MIA
So, I wondered if you would like to go to the Halloween carnival with me this weekend.
James blushes.
JAMES
Isn't the guy supposed to ask the girl?
Mia's smile deflates.
MIA
Isn't that a bit sexist?
Mia grips James's hand, and James squeezes tight.
JAMES
What time?
MIA
Six-thirty on Saturday.
JAMES
It's a date.
James almost floats, but he anchors himself against a phone pole. Then, he continues walking.
MIA
Great! You're picking me up. Don't be late.
JAMES
I'm sure I won't be late, Mia.
Mia looks up at the sizable off-white house sitting in front of her from a distance. Large shingles hang from the big porch, and a decent front lawn hides behind an enormous gate. James guides Mia in, still holding hands. At one point, she even lays her head on his shoulder and snuggles into his arm.
Sam stands in the front, staring out at James and Mia, looking disappointed. They approach Sam, who angrily taps his toes in the dirt.
SAM
What the hell are you doing, James?
James grins at Sam.
JAMES
Sam, this is Mia. Mia, this is Sam.
Mia holds out her hand.
MIA
Hello, Mr. Knight. It's a pleasure.
SAM
Yeah.
Sam ignores Mia's tired arm. She pulls it down with no success.
SAM
James, I need to talk to you in private—
Sam briefly looks at Mia.
Sam
—If you don't mind.
Mia shakes her head.
MIA
I don't mind.
Sam tugs James's hand, pulling him off to the side, away from Mia.
SAM
You brought a girl home, James?
JAMES
She's a friend.
Sam huffs.
SAM
I don't give a fuck who she is. We don't know yet how this will...
(Sam gestures to Mia.)
Influence your powers.
JAMES
You mean a girl?
Sam sighs, staring at Mia for a moment, watching her sway around, and study the house.
SAM
Yes, James. You can't risk bringing a girl home.
JAMES
What if I love her?
Sam scoffs again.
SAM
I don't care. Make her leave.
JAMES
No, I want her here.
SAM
Yeah, because your horny teenage hormones are raging, you damn well do.
James sighs.
JAMES
I already promised her study help.
SAM
On what subject?
JAMES
Science.
Sam winces.
SAM
How many days and for how long?
JAMES
Just for a few days.
Beat. Sam groans.
SAM
Okay, but you know your dad will be mad if he finds out.
JAMES
I can handle that.
James looks back at Mia. She sways in the driveway to her beautiful humming and smiles when she sees James walk over.
JAMES
Do you want to go inside?
Mia's smile brightens, and she skips to James.
MIA
Gladly.
INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER
Sam takes refuge in the left corner of the kitchen. James pulls out two drinks from the fridge and pops one open, laying it on the counter beside her.
She giggles, watching him break his open and suck the gushing soda from the bottle, feeling more than invincible.
MIA
How did you do that?
JAMES
What? The soda thing?
James takes a sip of his soda.
MIA
Yeah.
JAMES
It's one of my many superpowers.
James winks at Mia, sliding into the seat next to her. Sam rolls his eyes, drinking a soda from the counter. Mia laughs, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She digs through her book bag for her stuff. James digs through his bag for his book, pens, and notebook.
James flips to the new page the class has been working on for the last two weeks and recites words, but Mia's hand slams against James's book, and she looks into his eyes.
MIA
I don't mean that page. I mean last week's homework. I wasn't in class.
Mia chuckles, seducing James. James swiftly grabs the countertop, feeling light and fearing he will start floating in the air at any second.
JAMES
Oh—
James' eyebrows furrow, and he bites his lower lip. Mia leans in, flipping the pages, and James leans forward, nearly bumping heads again.
MIA
Oops.
James takes a deep breath. He is nervous. The front entrance opens outside the kitchen, and Derek enters the hallway.
DEREK
(To Mia looking surprised)
Oh, hey-
Derek beams at Mia.
MIA
(To Derek)
Hi. It's Derek, right?
Mia watches Derek pull his belt from his waist.
Derek
Yeah. You must be James's crush.
James growls at Derek.
DEREK
(Defending himself)
Sorry, I mean, friend.
Derek's hands rise in the air.
MIA
You like me?
James blushes and takes a big gulp of soda.
SAM
Either you two accomplish something or are done for the day.
MIA
Right. Where were we?
SAM
If you need me, I'll be cooking.
Mia and James get back to work, flipping pages in the book and taking notes.
INT. MALL - EVENING
The nearby mall was the one place nobody would dare catch James dead in, but there he was, sitting against one of the empty glass store windows with Derek, licking chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream out of a cone.
James
I have a bad feeling about these new kids at my school.
James slurps, dripping vanilla ice cream off his thumb. Derek looks at James,  his eyebrows raised, and sucks on his mint chip cone.
Derek
What?
James shrugs.
James
It just seems weird that they came out of nowhere, you know, besides the fact their accents match the supers, too.
They sit silently, and James dips into my ice cream with his tongue again.
Derek
I mean, maybe you should trust your instinct. It could be your spidey senses tingling.
Derek lets out a laugh before biting into his ice cream whole. Who does that?
Derek
Are we almost done?
James
I may or may not have a few more bites.
James points out his two scoops of ice cream still piled onto my cone.
Derek
You're kidding, right?
James
What?
DEREK
Who bites ice cream?
Nearby, an alarm sounds at a jewelry store. They don't even notice a masked man walk by them while Derek and James are busy with our mid-afternoon desserts. This was the third robber they encounter recently besides the one James tossed on his brother's car for the sky.
Robber #3
Nobody moves, or they get a bullet in their bloody skull.
The robber seems Australian, just like those other two supers. It couldn't have been more of a coincidence.
Derek
Son of a bitch.
James and his brother simultaneously toss their ice cream in a trash can beside us and strategize for a moment.
James
Go, Derek!
Derek rolls his eyes and stays put.
Derek
You go. I'll be right behind you. You're the one with powers.
James rolls his eyes this time.
James
(mumbles)
Wuss.
Derek
I heard that.
Instead, James tucks his hood over his head and lifts into the sky, floating across the mall until he's in front of the jewelry store, watching a masked man pull a smash-and-grab while Derek runs out on foot. In the background, the two employees look mortified as they slide to the floor, and people wander out into the open, taking videos on their cell phones and staring. What is with these people?
Derek
Hands up!
Derek announces, pulling his gun from his waistband beneath his hoodie, feeling mighty momentarily. But the robber turns his attention to James, floating in the air, staring down at him. James' eyes drift to Derek below, standing there watching him. Suddenly, the robber plucks the gun from Derek's hand with something as simple as a thought, and it floats across the room into the robbers' hands. James sucks in a sharp breath.
James
He's super, too. Why didn't we see that coming?
The masked man suddenly lifts into the sky and matches James's height, and he points the gun back at Derek. Then he pushes his finger against the trigger, narrowly missing the young couple walking by, totally not paying attention. James is in front of Derek in a split second, and he squeezes his eyes shut. Then, as the bullet bounced off his chest, James' eyes peeked open, and he sighed.
James
Whew. I haven't done that in years.
James drops to ground level with the robber. The man's blue eyes narrow with his, and his grin drops, and he turns the barrel on the two store employees. Then, he points the gun toward James.
Robber #3
Stand up, James.
James' eyes widen in panic, and he looks at Derek, who is also shocked.
RoBBER #3
I said, STAND UP, James Everett Knight.
JAMES
How do you know my name?
Robber #3
Ask your father who I am.
James
Noted.
James raises his hands. The robber points the gun at Derek.
ROBBER #3
You too, Derek.
Derek rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. The robber irritably points the gun back at the two employees standing cautiously with their hands in the air.
James
Leave them alone. They didn't do anything to you.
The robber turns the gun on James this time, and he bites his tongue. Then he turns the gun back to the employees. One employee, blonde and tall, eyes the counter. His hand slipped under, and he pressed a panic button. The alarm whistles. The impatient robber growls, and the gun clicks. Derek stands there, urging James to do something super as James stands there frozen in fear for the first time in his life, adrenaline pumping through his veins.
Robber #3
(yelling)
Do you want to die today?
The robber adjusts his hold on the gun, and employee number two, a young girl, slips her hand under the table this time, hitting the alarm again. The robber points his gun at her, and a bullet flies from the weapon. Time freezes while everything moves in slow motion. James takes off superhuman speed, swiftly rushing to both employees' aid. The remaining glass from the countertops shatters, and James knocks both employees to the ground on top of one another while the bullet pierces the wall. Then, he pulls off the two of them when he feels safe. The male employee awkwardly smiles at his co-worker from behind her before rolling off.
Robber #3
You're stupid, just like Sam.
James' eyebrows raise, and he swears Derek has the same expression painted on his face. It was the second time Sam's name came up. What dumb thing did Sam do to get us into this mess?
The robber raises the gun, pointing it at James again. James charges the man, frozen in time, and yanks the gun from his hands as they tumble in the air three stories to the ground level below. Both their eyes shift to the gun lying smashed on the floor next to them as if it were a plastic toy.
Robber #3
What the bloody hell, kid?
They collect themselves from the ground. James dusts debris from his shirt and shrugs. Then, as the police barged through the mall, guns were drawn on the robber. James takes a deep, relieved breath. Matthew steps forward in the crowd of cops.
Matthew
Hands up.
His eyes study his son standing there, his gun drawn on the robber for a moment. But a dozen officers turn their weapons on James. James lifts his hands in the air to surrender. Instead, his father stops them before they can pull the trigger.
Matthew
Stand down.
The officers still shakily point the gun at James.
Matthew
(yelling)
Damn it! I said, stand down.
The police retreat with their guns to the robber. James' eyes land on Derek, who races down the second-floor elevator to meet the other cops.
Matthew
Where's your brother?
Derek's eyes meet James' before he shrugs, and James' eyes shift to the floor, away from his father.
Derek
Not sure. James wandered away to get something, but I hadn't seen him since.
Matthew
Find him.
All eyes drag to the other officers' gaze shifts around the open mall.
Garrett
What the hell!

His eyes draw to James.
GARRETT
Where is the robber?
The other officers look dumbfounded.
Cop #1
He's superhuman!
All eyes turned to James this time. James throws his hands in the air again, and there's silence until he finally clears his throat, avoiding the dead silence.
James
(disguising his voice)
I guess I'll go.
James points to the sky. Then he cautiously raises, floating above the heavy police presence. Cameras flash from every angle, trying to catch the best picture. Then, James salutes the officers below, staring at his father, watching him from below, and then taking off, flying past Mark's friends who look up from their cellphones as he passes by barreling through the double sliding mall entrance.
INT. LIVING ROOM — HOME — DAY
Sam and Matthew are sitting on the couch together when Derek and James walk in; They are sucking on a beer, and their eyes meet James in one glance.
Matthew
How was the mall?
Derek and James freeze in the doorway for a moment. James tucks his hoodie in his arms, and they all gawk at each other like deer in the headlights.
Derek
It was something.
Derek laughs nervously, drying the silence and saving James' ass again.
James
Yeah.
Sam
Where were you when the robbery was going down?
Matthew's eyes meet James again. There is more silence for a moment as he watches James walk across the hallway into the living room with Derek, who leans against the open doorway. Instead of pushing James any further, his father relaxes his raised eyebrow.
Matthew
There's pizza in the kitchen if you boys want some.
Derek and James exchange glances, and he walks off into the hallway.
Derek
I'll bring you some, James.
James stays in the living room, exchanging glances with Sam this time. Ironically enough, Iconic, James throws his hoodie over his back and ties it around his neck like a cape.
Sam
Did you see anything that happened?
James watches him with a squinted "You're kidding, right" look before completely lying like he usually does in front of his father.
James
Uh, maybe? There was too big of a crowd to tell what was happening, but I caught some of it.
Derek
What dumbasses? Who stands there watching an armed robbery in progress with a video camera and doesn't do shit to help the situation?
Derek appears behind James, passing his brother a paper plate filled with four slices of thick, warm pepperoni pizza.
Sam
I don't even get a thank you.
Sam jokingly begs for appreciation as James looks up from his food. Then Sam tips his beer toward James.
Derek and James pause between bites and tip their pizza slice towards Sam.
Derek and James
(In unison)
Thanks, Sam.
INT.  Classroom - morning
MR. ALEXANDER (Knight) KINLEY, a substitute for Mr. Rooke's class, youthful for being in his early 40s, and Caucasian with deep blonde hair and blue eyes, resembled a heavy Australian accent. He lays his briefcase on his desk and addresses the classroom as if he owns the building.
MR. KINLEY
Good morning, class. I'm Mr. Kinley, your substitute, thanks to Ms. Rooke.
Half the class grunts and groans in unison while a few chuckle. A few students cover their heads with their hoods. James doodles.
MR. KINLEY
James Knight. Read the poem on the board for me, mate.
Mr. Kinley clears his throat, thumping his fingers against James' desk in the front row, and points to the board. His eyes track James' fingers, watching him drop his pen on his paper.
James sits back and looks up at the board, but after collapsing in his seat when he reads the first and second sentences, he can collect himself and reads aloud.
JAMES
Flying, leaping, and jumping into action. This hero does more than gratify his reputation. We all wear masks, but the person beneath the hood, the overlooked underdog, goes above and beyond the ordinary tasks.
James looks around and acknowledges the entire class is staring at him. There is dead silence, and Mark starts slow-clapping with a grin.
MARK
Wow, Mr. Kinley, that was deep. You know supers suck, right?
Mark looks at James, then at Max. Mr. Kinley puffs on his chest in anger, slamming his fists on his wooden desk.
MR. KINLEY
(agitated)
Superhuman's are the future of the human race, Mr. Reignson. They can do much more than your father would ever dream of...
Mark fuels Mr. Kinley's fury, slamming his hands on his desk with a grunt.
MARK
Yeah, like what? What can they do that's so incredible?
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Sam waits for James in the kitchen while James pushes through the door. He confronts James in the kitchen with an unopened root beer bottle against his teeth. James pulls up on a stool at the far edge of the counter and sighs.
James
So, my teacher's a poet.
Sam laughs, and James rolls his eyes, plopping beside Sam on the stool.
James
Is it that obvious?
Sam
James, I've even seen the dents you've put in your locker during parent-teacher nights.
Sam struggles to open his root beer. James yanked the bottle from him and popped it open with ease.
Sam
Thanks. It just means you need to be more careful with your powers.
James
What if I don't want these powers?
Sam pulls himself off the stool and lays a sympathetic hand on James' shoulder.
Sam
I know, James. I've tried to fix it, remember?
James rolls his eyes.
James
I hate this whole super thing. Those supers are after you, Sam. I don't have any idea of how to deal with this.
Sam sets his soda bottle on the table, sitting next to James, and begins one of his many speeches to boost James' confidence.
Sam
Well, James, your powers come with considerable sacrifice. You may not have wanted them, but you may have no choice but to keep them.
James stares at Sam with raised eyebrows.
Sam
Look, if you seriously don't want your powers, I'm working on something small again, but I'm not just going to let you give up that easily. The world needs you, James. Your family needs you. It's a crucial time.
James
YOU need me.
James reminds Sam.
SAM
Not as much as your father or brother, James. Would you like to help me down in the laboratory?
James' eyebrows furrow. Sam smiles, taking another sip of his drink.
JAMES
At this very moment?
Sam
I imagined we'd have time to get additional data on your abilities. You know, just in case my next cure doesn't work.
Sam smiles as he takes another sip of his drink. James grimaces.
SAM
Do you want some soda?
Sam pushes an unopened root beer across the table. He finally gets non-caffeinated. James listens to the top of the soda cap and pulls the bottle to his lips. He takes a sip.
JAMES
Does it come with a considerable sacrifice?
James floats his soda bottle from his lips to the table. Sam shakes his head.
SAM
Go to the lab. I'll meet you down there in a moment.
INT. BASEMENT LABORATORY - DAY
Sam and James are in the basement sipping root beer and testing James's abilities again. A giant wheel-like treadmill sits in the basement's corner, looking mighty beaten up. James floats over, landing flawlessly on the machine.
Sam focuses on his keypad, shooting James a brief thumbs-up as he speeds up in place, catching speeds of well over 300,000,000 meters per second. He comes to a halt a moment later, seeing himself near the edge of the machine, slipping off the edge.
JAMES
Sam, what do you remember about your work?
Sam's eyebrows rise from behind his computer screen.
SAM
It's not a good time to ask me about that, bud.
JAMES
Why?
SAM
Look, James. These supers are a more significant problem than my work for the government. You are getting more powerful, but I'm unsure if it's enough to take on the others.
JAMES
Sam, what is it about these supers that unnerve you?
James pushes Sam for another answer. Sam pulls himself up from behind the computer screen.
SAM
(bothered)
I don't need to discuss that with you yet.
JAMES
Okay, fine. I was just curious.
James claps his hands together and grins.
JAMES
What's next on the list?
SAM
You're done. I already have data from the other day.
JAMES
Oh, come on, Sam.
SAM
I'm working on something rather significant, and I need you to go upstairs right now.
James grunts, dragging himself towards the staircase.
JAMES
Fine, you win. I'll take a walk and find Derek.
James clunks up the staircase and stops at the top of the steps, anticipating Sam's response. Sam yells at him from below.
SAM
Just a walk, James.
EXT. CAR - DAY
Derek and James sit in the cop car at the Phantom Burger parking lot, snacking cheeseburgers and fries.
Derek
When are you planning on talking to Dad about your powers? I'm ninety-nine point nine percent sure he knows by now.
Derek takes a bite of his burger. James stuffs a fry in my mouth.
James
What about the point zero-one percent?
Derek
Dad is, well...Dad.
There's a moment of silence.
James
(Mumbles)
Yeah, he probably knows.
Derek chuckles, taking the last bite of his burger. He clicks his tongue against his teeth and sits back.
Derek
Yep.
Outside, something or rather someone rocks the car. Derek steals the bag full of fries from James's fingers and glares at him.
Derek
You know how this works.

Derek gestures outside, stealing a fry with his other hand.
Derek
Get out there.
James huffs, throwing his hoodie over his head, and opens the door, meeting Super #2 outside the car, with his hood hiding his face, too. James pulls his fingers into fists, ready to attack, but the boy lifts his hands to surrender.
Super #2
Chill, mate. I'm here to help you.
James' left eyebrow rises in amusement, and his arms across his chest, studying the boy.
James
Who are you?
The teen chuckles to himself and lifts into the sky a few inches.
Super #2
I'm not telling you that.
He sucked in a sharp breath.
James
Why are you after my uncle?
The hooded boy scoffs, landing on the sidewalk beside James; his face turns to the floor.
Super #2
Do you mean Sam?
(He snickers with a grin)
What has he told you about his past? I mean, he's had to have told you something, considering you have superpowers.
James looks at the kid up and down. Derek opens the car door and looks at the two boys.
Derek
(Mumbling)
Great.
Derek takes hold of his taser stuffed in his hoodie. The teen appears beside him, pinning Derek against the car to stop him. Derek lets the taser go.
Super #2
Relax. I don't want to hurt you guys.
The boy lets Derek go, backing off, and Derek's panic dissipates a little.
Derek
If you're not here to hurt us, why would you attack me like that?
The boy scoffs, adjusting his mask, his face still turned to the floor.
Super #2
You reached for your taser, mate. I'm not stupid. In fact...
The boy taps his temple, and his voice projects into Derek and James's thoughts. They try to tune it out by plugging their ears, but it's inside their head.
Super #2 (V.O.)
I can read and put thoughts into your mind.
He taps his temple again, and Derek and James stare at him.
Super #2
Just be careful what you think.

The super's cell phone rings in his pocket, and he fishes it from his pants.
Super #2
I have to go. Raincheck?
Without an answer, he disappeared into the night air.
Derek
Fuck!

Derek gets back into the car and slams the door. James follows him.
Derek
We have to say something to Sam, and you have to tell Dad your secret.
James shakes his head.
James
That guy doesn't seem like a threat. He was trying to help.
Derek
I don't trust him.
James
Why? He seemed better than the other guy from the other day.
Derek huffs.
Derek
Did you miss the part when he pinned me against the car?
James
No, but I want you to trust me. That guy is not the bad guy.
Derek shakes his head and throws the bag of fries at James.
Derek
Just eat your fries, Superboy.
Derek starts the car. He pulls out of the parking spot, and they take off toward home.
Int. Kitchen - James House - noon
Derek and James sit at the kitchen island eating leftover brookies while sucking down a glass of milk. James floats a can of the sprite to my lips.
Derek
That's quite bold.
James
What?
Derek sighs.
Derek
Dad is here.
James grabs the can from the air and sets it down on the counter. Matthew walks through the doorway, wet from the rain outside, holding the mail from outdoors, soaked wet, and Derek shoots James a "told you so" look.
Matthew
I'm going for a drive this evening, and I was hoping you could come with me, James.
Derek takes a sip of milk.
Derek
Reignson, let you off today?
Derek pulls his milk to his lips again and takes a big gulp, leaving a milk mustache.
Matthew
Yep.
Matthew plucks Derek's Brookie from his fingertips and finishes it in one bite.
Matthew
Thanks, Derek.
Matthew leaves the room with a stuffed mouth. James stuffs his brookie in his mouth. Derek stares at the doorway where their father left the room and pouts.
Derek
Why does everyone steal my food?
James
Bad luck, I guess.
Derek glares at James, his eyes fixed on his soda can, and he rolls his eyes.
Derek
You're lucky I don't drink Sprite.
Derek checks his cell phone and leaves the kitchen in a rush. James sighs, leaning against the broken countertop, loosening another chunk as dust and debris rain down his thigh.
James
Stupid super strength.
Derek
(Yelling)
You probably deserve that.
James pulls away from the counter. Matthew enters the kitchen.
Matthew
I don't want you hanging out with Derek when he's at work. As much as I want you to enter the academy after graduation, he isn't the most influential person in your life.
James
Dad!
Matthew opens the fridge and removes a beer.
Matthew
James, you're sixteen!
Matthew walks to the sink, leaning over it.
Matthew
If you enjoy going with Derek so much, maybe I might enroll you in ROTC.
James huffs.
James
Nope.
Matthew grunts, frustrated by James's defiance.
Matthew
I should have done that when you first entered high school.
James rolls his eyes.
Matthew
I'll tell you what? I'll think about it.
Matthew walks by James, clinks his drink against James's Sprite can and walks out.
INT. HOUSE - Night
The doorbell rings, and Derek pulls his head from the couch while his dad watches, scarfing down a brookie, springing fast from the seat, nearly falling over from exhaustion.
Derek
I'll get it.
INT. Hallway - House - MomENTS LATER
Derek bolts to the door. The doorbell RINGS twice again, and the front door opens. Noah stands in the doorway. James bolts down the steps. James stares at Noah.
Derek
Can I help you?
Noah pushes past him into the foyer, next to James by the stairs.
Noah
Nice house, Knight.
Then, he pats James' shoulder, and Noah paces to the kitchen pops open the fridge, and pulls out a cola in front of Matthew. Derek and James stare, amused.
Derek
What-the-hell.
James
What do you want, Noah?
Noah
I came by to say hi and, oh, possibly talk to you about something important.
Noah wiggles his eyebrows at James. Matthew points his beer at Noah and looks at James.
Matthew
Do you know this kid?
Matthew scowls at Noah.
Noah
We go to school together.
Noah throws his arm over James' shoulder. James pushes Noah off of him.
James
What do you want, Noah?
Noah glances around the room before his eyes land on Matthew, uncomfortable in the corner.
Noah
I want to talk to you. Did you not hear me the first time?
James looks at Derek for help, and he shrugs.
Derek
Fine.
Derek gestures out of the room. Then, he briefly locks eyes with his dad.
Derek
We'll go to James' room, but I'm staying with both of you.
Noah
Alright, rookie. He barks and bites. Wuff.
(Noah's grins)
I'll race you there.
Noah wanders past Derek as he rushes behind him up the steps, and James follows.
Derek
Don't touch anything, Noah.
Then Noah races into James' bedroom, jumping on his mattress.
Int. Bedroom - momENTS LATER
Noah settles in the air, hovering above James's mattress in the spacious room. Derek stands in the corner and watches Noah, unsure what to do with a dangerous superhuman in the room, and neither does James, who stands in the distance from his bed and the door.
Derek
Who are you again?
Derek watches Noah float his cell phone above his chest as he drops from the air to the mattress.
Noah
I can't tell you that.
(He glances at Derek and winks)
But Superboy over here needs to resist playing hero for a moment. Max and I have been on to you since we moved here.
He takes a deep breath and exhales.
James
Listen, Noah. I have powers, but I'm not sure my dad knows, and I want to keep it like that so you won't make this hard.
Noah
I invade your bedroom, and you're worried about that? Geez.
Noah rolls his eyes and laughs to himself.
Derek
What do you want?
Noah
It's not me you need to worry about. I'm not the bad guy.
Derek
Well, you're not doing an good job of looking like the good guy right now.
Derek leans against the wall, his eyes zoned in on Noah. Noah looked at James for help. Noah huffs, lowering his phone to his hands.
Noah
Okay, tough guy. Don't you think I would have hurt you by now if I was going to do something?
Noah sits up as he raises an eyebrow in Derek's direction.
Derek
Watch it.
Derek points his finger at Noah. James rolls his eyes at Derek, then Noah.
Noah
What are you going to do, mate?
Noah's eyes trail to James' science book left open on the desk. SLAM! The pages slap closed. Derek jumps.
Derek
You dick!
Derek glowers at him. Noah stifles a chuckle, watching James in the doorway. This time, James is mad.
James
Go home, Noah.
Noah
I don't have a home.
James
I'll talk to you tomorrow. Go home wherever you're staying, Noah.
Noah huffs, rolling off the mattress.
Noah pushes past James' as he walks by, rushing down the steps to the door. Derek goes away from the wall, sitting at James' desk.
Derek
I take it that guy isn't popular.
James
Nope.
INT. HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL - DAY
Mia and James stand by the Ferris wheel. Mia is smiling and finishing the last bite of their shared cotton candy.
MIA
So—
Mia pushes her lips together.
JAMES
—So, I have something to tell you.
James grins, half drunk, in Mia's smile.
MIA
What?
Mia looks deep into James' eyes, and attentive and in love, he grabs her hands. The wind brushes her face as the carnival begins with loud carnival games and people running around in costumes.
JAMES
Do you trust me?
MIA
What is it, James?
Mia's nose compresses.
JAMES
(Repeating himself)
Do you trust me?
Mia looks concerned for James. James throws his hood over his head and guides Mia towards the open back of the Ferris wheel ride. James pulls Mia's hands over his shoulder, and suddenly, they take off in the air.
MIA
James, we're... flying!
Mia looks scared but amused as she clings to James and steadies herself.
JAMES
It's okay. I've got you. Don't look down.
Mia studies her surroundings.
MIA
But how? I've known you since the sixth grade.
Multiple people stop as James and Mia float higher in the air.
JAMES
I blame Sam.
MIA
Oh, so, wait! You're Alpha?
JAMES
Yep.
She looks up at James, and suddenly, they're staring into each other's eyes. James leans in, combing her hair with his fingers. He holds on, his lips brushing hers.
Fireworks explode around the two in the background as they dance in the air. Mia kisses James back, pressing her lips firmly against his. James shuts his eyes, feeling the wind brush their faces, and he floats with her, level with the Ferris wheel.
Down below, chaos organizes. People run for shelter while a super threatens the Carnival. James opens his eyes and swoops below, putting Mia on the ground.
JAMES
Run, Mia.
James points off in the distance, and Mia hides behind a booth nearby. Max appears, disguised under a hoodie and mask.
MAX
James-Everett-Knight.
Max doesn't disguise his voice this time. James rushes out, meeting the super amid heavy foot traffic.
JAMES
I'm right here. Leave these people alone.
Max chuckles.
MAX
I'm not here for them. You're the one I want - - for now.
Max lifts into the air, swooping towards a group of people stuck on a roller coaster. The people jerk in their seats, creating shelter within each other.
MAX
But if you want to play games...
Max's finger digs into the side of the metal machine. Screams echo from the ride. James swoops, tumbling in the air, hurling the miscreant boy to the ground. Max doesn't submit under the pressure of James' strength. He is dead meat.
MAX
James Knight. I'm going to kill you.
James's hands dig into Max's neck. Max lets go of James' shoulders, choking on air as his hoodie falls behind him.
James
Max.
James pulls off to the side, catching his breath. Max tugged at James' hoodie, pulling it down his back. Max watches James' eyes for a moment, and within seconds, he disappears into the open.
James rises to his feet, scanning the quiet carnival for Mia. She is nowhere to be found.
JAMES
Mia! MIA!
Mia doesn't answer. James dusts himself off, feeling defeated, and lifts into the air, ascending home.
INT. JAMES BEDROOM - NIGHT
James' eyes slap open, glowing fluorescent purple, fading to blue under a moonlit bedroom. Sweat drips from every inch of his body. His phone dings on the countertop by his bedside, and he picks it up, relieved when he sees Mia's name on the screen. James scans his phone and rushes to the window.
INT/EXT. MIA'S ROOM - NIGHT
James knocks on Mia's window to be sure and finds her shocked to see him. Mia opens her window, and James floats in front of her second-story room, watching her cross her arms.
MIA
James, I wasn't expecting you to show up.
JAMES
I came to see if you were safe.
MIA
Get in here before my father or uncle sees you floating.
James shivers.
JAMES
Right.
Mia's eyes sink, and James brushes a loose strand behind her ear. Mia and James brush up against each other; James stares at Mia. Mia backs away.
MIA
I don't understand how you have superpowers.
James walks over to Mia's bedside and sits down.
JAMES
It's a long and complicated story. If you'd like to hear it, I can tell you now.
MIA
No. Not now. Mark would have a fit if he knew you were here, as would my uncle. Leave, but you can tell me at your house in the morning.
James grins, studying her empty room.
JAMES
I would love that.
MIA
Good. Now, leave before you get caught.
Mia gives James a shove, and James moves toward the window. He pulls his feet over the side and looks at Mia before flying off.
INT. SAM's BASEMENT - DAY
Mia's eyes light up when James navigates her down the stairs, flashing a look at Sam as they enter the Laboratory.
MIA
This looks amazing.
Mia twitches her nose in excitement. Sam's grin returns as he flips a switch on his motherboard, and the room lights up in neon lights.
SAM
You like it now.
Mia twirls her hair in her fingertips as she glances at James, biting the skin on her upper lip. She slips her fingers into James, and their hands melt together.
MIA
Yeah, I like it. It reminds me of the northern lights. My family took me there when I was seven.
Instead, Mia frowns. Sam shuts the switch down and looks at James, who squeezes Mia's fingers tightly.
SAM
That's interesting.
Sam seems disappointed but backs off. James changes subjects after noticing Sam's disheartened look, gesturing to the box hanging from the corner's wall. Sam removes a vial of neon liquids from the crate and hands it to James. He holds it up to Mia.
JAMES
Sam has been working on some significant projects, and after many years with my superpowers, I've considered giving it up. I'm not sure I can go much longer with these powers, Mia.
Mia's mouth falls open, and she glances at James in shock, her hands tearing from his.
MIA
You can't just give up superpowers, James.
JAMES
Yes, I can. I've been debating with myself about this for years now.
Sam sits in the background behind his computer without saying a word.
MIA
What about the bad guys, James? Who's going to stop them? I saw the way you handled that other super yesterday. You're a good guy, James. We NEED a good guy.
JAMES
I'm not just a super, Mia. I'm a regular guy trying to live an ordinary life, too. If any group could take down a super, it's the cops.
Mia pouts, but she doesn't argue.
EXT. FRONT PORCH — JAMES HOME — NIGHT
Max flips his hood over his head and snatches a walkie from Mia's thin fingers as he grunts, shifting behind the bush.
MAX
Can I kill him if I see him?
Max pushes the intercom into the sleeve of his jacket. Mark fakes a cough and shakes his head.
MARK
You're not killing anyone. James is not an idiot. He'll figure you out, eventually.
Mia pushes on Max's left shoulder to get him to leave. Max groans, leveling his eyes with Mia's.
MIA
I would have been in there probably twice as fast as you, Max.
Mia shoves Max forward. Max looks behind him, growling at Mia.
MARK
No, you wouldn't. You'd get distracted by Knight and get us all caught.
Mia huffs, shoving Max forward again.
MAX
Don't test me, Mia.
MIA
Just go.
Mia shoves Max again.
MAX
I'm going.
Max crawls out from behind the shrubs as the wind picks up, and he disappears.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Derek and James join Samual in the kitchen over a glass of milk and Oreo cookie ice cream. Samual's cheeks redden and fluster and his fingers slide through his greasy blonde hair. Samual, buzzed and slightly drunk, takes long breaths.
SAMUAL
I get it, James. Your whole not wanting to be a superhero thing. I get it.
Samual has a mental breakdown, one of the many he has had over the years, but James is there for him, and so is Derek.
Ext. Alleyway - california - flashback - day
A younger MATTHEW KNIGHT, 27, pushes a young Samual, 23, wearing a gloved hoodie, a mask, long sweats, and Converse, forward as they stand in an alleyway.
Matthew
Scale the wall or something, Sammie, and see if the bad guys are still there.
Samual
I'm not Spiderman, Matthew. I can fly, not scale buildings, with my bare hands. It's an entirely different superpower.
Samual's eyes zone in on his brother. Matthew pushes him forward as Sam stumbles out of an alleyway.
Matthew pulls his walkie to his lips and said.
Matthew
This is Officer Matthew Knight, requesting backup on robbery suspects.
HENRY KNIGHT, the second oldest brother, clears his throat in the walkie-talkie and his voice rumbles through the other end.
Henry (V.O.)
Ten-four. Officer Kane and I are in pursuit as we speak.
Matthew shoves Samual further out of the alleyway.
Matthew
Awesome. Do your superhero shit, super boy.
Samual glares at his brother for a second, realizing Matthew won't give up until Samual stops the suspects. Samual rolls his shoulders before throwing my hoodie above his head and floats into the sky.
Int. Kitchen - day
DEREK
Samual, take a deep breath before you hyperventilate.
Derek takes a seat next to Samual.
Samual sucks in the air and drops against the chair. His chest sinks deep against his knees, and his spine aligns as if they attached him to a long string.
Samual
I—
A crash from the basement startles all three, and James drops the spoon to the floor, rushing downstairs.
INT. BASEMENT - SAME TIME - NIGHT
Maximus sifts through dressers and drawers, and after giving up in minutes, he pulls the intercom to his lips. The floors are a fluorescent mess of glass and experiments.
Max
Where's the vial?
Mia's voice booms through the intercom.
Mia (V.O.)
It's in a private cabinet above his desk chair.
The sound of clanking footsteps alarms Max. He leaps across the room, avoiding slipping on wet experiments as he rips open the container, grabs the vial in his warm hand, and runs towards the door.
James stands in the doorway, glaring at Max, watching him run up the stairs at superhuman speed with his hood secured on top of his head. Max stuffs the vial into his pocket and rushes off like a coward, running from a crime scene.
Samual and Derek follow down the steps moments later.
DEREK
Who was that? Because I just got a call from the station about Noah requesting you, James.
James
You're kidding.
INT. police station - interview room - noon
Noah sits in the corner, shoving a chair closer to Derek with his mind, watching it creek across the floor after the other officers leave them in the room.
He glares at Derek and James from under his hood before pulling it off and wiping his fingers through his black hair.
NOAH
So, James...
James watches Noah's hazel eyes glare at him. Noah chuckles to himself. James sucks in the air.
JAMES
Why did Max steal the cure?
Noah's eyes grow dark as he watches Derek and James. The two young men make conscious movements.
Noah
I see Max is causing trouble again.
Derek leaps from his seat at Noah and raises his voice. His police work is getting to him.
DEREK
If you don't cooperate, Kinley, I'll let James deal with you. Would you like to see two supers fight in a police station?
Noah
Down, boy.
Derek sizes up Noah, but James pulls Derek back.
JAMES
Derek, calm down.
Derek sinks against the chair, and James again gives the interrogation a whirl.
JAMES
What do you know about my uncle and his work?
Noah scoffs adjusts himself in his chair and his handcuffs and looks at James.
NOAH
I didn't do anything. I swear.
JAMES
How do you know my uncle?
NOAH
I only understand that he works privately and is your uncle. Do you have any other annoying questions for me, or would you like to let me take them off?
DEREK
Did you drop Mark Reignson from the sky?
Noah glares at Derek but reluctantly avoids an argument.
NOAH
Yeah. I was trying to protect you from my brother.
James' jaw muscles clench, and he makes a fist, hoping he won't do anything stupid.
DEREK
You mean, Max?
Derek pushes the distance between Noah and James. Noah reluctantly backs off.
NOAH
Yeah, and that girl you like... She's using you, mate.
James' fists curl tighter. Derek notices his brother's anger.
DEREK
James, don't listen to him. Go out in the hallway or something. Find dad.
Noah's eyes lighten as he intrudes on Derek's frustrated words.
NOAH
One quick moment. I have some information for you and James that you need to hear.
JAMES
What?
Noah pulls back in his seat, uncomfortable, throwing up his hands.
NOAH
I don't mean any harm. At least I care enough about you to get caught. We have a stronger bond than you think.
Noah briefly glances at Derek, then at James.
NOAH
I want to protect you two from my brother. He's ruthless. Max won't stop until he fulfills his mission.
JAMES
What mission?
NOAH
Your uncle was a part of a horrible government group. It wasn't his fault. Samual was young and forced into it. Max doesn't understand and wants to destroy him.
DEREK
You mean he wants to kill Samual?
NOAH
Yes, maybe. My brother is not someone you want to mess with. He's ruthless and unreliable. He acts on impulse and doesn't care what his actions could do to others. Our father... our real dad...
DEREK
Who's your father?
NOAH
It doesn't matter, mate. Forget I brought him up.
Derek readjusted his posture.
Derek
If you don't give us any helpful information, my buddies and I will have to charge you with the attempted murder of the chief's son.
NOAH
That's fine. I can easily pull out these handcuffs if I want to. In fact—
Noah raises his cuffed hands and tears them apart smoothly, like melted butter.
NOAH
Hold still, James. This is going to hurt a little.
James' eyebrows furrow. SLAM! James stabilizes himself, doubling back. Blood drips from his puffed lips, but he wipes it clean with his sleeve.
Derek pulls James from the room while a group of officers swarm the questioning area. Mr. Reignson slams Noah against the table while another officer tucks his arms behind his back. James's father watches Derek and James standing in the room's corner.
INT. SCHOOL - DAY
The third-period bell rings. Max takes the seat behind James in the third row. James' palms sweat, and he takes a deep breath after feeling a panic attack rush over him. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
MIA
Hey Knight.
Mia sits in the chair in front of James. Her big blue eyes gaze into his as she turns in her seat. James smiles, and his anxiety vanishes.
JAMES
What's up?
James' smile grows. Max huffs behind him.
MAX
(Mumbling)
Idiot.
Mia's eyes shoot past James, and she glares at Max. James looked behind himself, watching Max roll his eyes.
MIA
Shut up, Max.
Max mocks Mia like a child. He huffs, leaning back in his seat. James turns around to Mia.
MIA
(to James)
Can I come to your place this afternoon?--
Mia casually looks at James and smiles, pressing her index finger against his nose. She lowers her voice and leans in, so only James can hear her.
MIA
--Superboy.
Mia winks. She looks at Max and grimaces. Max grunts in annoyance. James laughs.
James rubs his neck, staring into Mia's deep blue eyes.
JAMES
Yeah, I can walk you to my house after school.
Mia smirks, and so does James.
MIA
I'll meet you outside the front entrance. We can walk from there.
James nods.
JAMES
Got it.
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Samual catches James on the couch with Mia, munching pretzels and drinking Coca-Cola, and James' father, who sits drunk in the corner in his chair. James snakes around her shoulder. Derek keeps giving James dirty looks when their father isn't looking. The attention in the room shifts to Samual.
MIA
Hey, Samual!
Mia shifts in James' arms. She waves at Samual when he enters the room, and Samual's eyes turn to Derek and James on the couch.
SAMUAL
Derek and James, a word, please.
Samual ushers the two men out of the room and leads them into the kitchen.
SAMUAL
James, do you realize Mia is the only one who knows about the cure?
James huffs. Samual and Derek lean against opposite walls, staring at James.
JAMES
Yeah? What's your point?
SAMUAL
She's Mark's cousin, allied with Max. Do you understand where this is going, James?
Samual tries to point out the obvious. James refuses to think like him. James' fists curl into his palm, and I lean against the counter, and it caved in on him under his strength.
DEREK
Whoa, there, Superboy.
Derek urgently soothes James.
DEREK
Samual has a valid point. She could work with them.
JAMES
We don't know that for sure.
James dusts debris from my shirt.
Matthew wanders after the noise of the countertop and into the kitchen. His face reddens when he sees James, covered in dust, and his eyes shoot past the counter to Samual.
MATTHEW
What the fuck, Samual.
Samual gestures to James and the mess and crosses his arms.
MATTHEW
The three of you clean that up.
JAMES
I'll be upstairs with Mia.
James brushes past Derek, takes Mia's hand, and walks off to his bedroom.
INT. JAMES BEDROOM - NIGHT
Mia is over that evening, hanging out with James in his room. James locks the door to his bedroom. His shirt slips from his body, and they fall against James' bed.
James' lips trace Mia's jawline. James' chest presses against Mia, and he floats off the bed taking Mia with him.
MIA
Are we floating, James?
Mia looks confused but mesmerized.
JAMES
Would it be wrong if I said we were?
Mia grins. James lowers Mia to the bed, and he sprawls out like Peter Pan, watching her.
MIA
Not really.
JAMES
Then, I guess we were?
Mia pulls off to the side, sighing as she sits up.
JAMES
What's wrong, Mia?
MIA
It is nothing, just... Nevermind.
JAMES
Are you sure? I can take anything you need to say to me. I can.
James scoots over and sits next to Mia on the side of the bed.
MIA
No, it's okay. I'm sure it would be better if I said nothing.
JAMES
Come on, Mia. You can tell me anything. I promise I won't feel uncomfortable.
James wraps his arm around Mia's shoulders. They fall against the bed, and Mia lies on James' chest. Samual knocks on the door. James doesn't push Mia away. Instead, he lays back on the bed, and she snuggles back into him.
SAMUAL (v.o.)
Do I need to give you the sex talk?
James huffs. Mia pulls off of James, and James unlocks the door with his telekinetic energy from the bed. Samual walks in, flipping on the light.
JAMES
Thanks a lot, Samual.
Mia yawns and stretches her arms, sitting up. James sits up too, and Mia snuggles back into James' chest. James eyes Samual with an irritated expression.
SAMUAL
Your dad is home if you want to know.
JAMES
What is wrong with you, Samual?
SAMUAL
A lot of things are wrong with me. You know better than this. What if you were to get her pregnant and pass your genes along?
Mia stops snuggling with James, uncomfortable with Samual in the room.
MIA
James, maybe I should go home.
JAMES
Are you sure, Mia?
Mia pulls off the bed and grabs her backpack from the floor.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY
Max paces the room while watching and rewatching the security footage on a police laptop sitting on the king-size bed of Noah, James, and Derek in the investigation room. Mark stands there watching him while chewing on his bottom lip.
Mark
Is that what you wanted I sure as hell can get you more proof if you need—
Max
Shut up.
Mark groans loudly and shuts the laptop.
Mark
Whatever. I have to return this to the station before my dad notices it missing.
Max
Do you think I give a bloody fuck?
Mark scoffs, taking a seat on the bed.
Mark
No. If you need it, I have that footage backed up to a hard drive.
Max groans.
Max
Are you bloody stupid?
Mark
What the fuck. I'm helping you. You don't have to be a dick.
Suddenly Max appears in front of Mark, his hand squeezing his neck.
Max
If you want to live, yeah, you do, mate.
Max stares Mark in the eyes before he lets go of Mark. Mark gasps.
Mark
Goddamn, you're strong.
Max
Shut up. Take your stupid laptop and leave.
Mark sighs, grabbing the laptop.
Mark
Alright. If you need anything, just text.
Max
Bloody hell! Leave already.
Mark
Fuck it.
Mark grunts and paces off. He stops at the door, watching Max, and suddenly, he leaves. Max paces to the bed, gets comfy under the covers and turns on the TV. Breaking news flashes across the TV.
The caption reads: BOY WONDER, city superhero, does it again. Who is he? Where did he come from?
Then his attention turns to the ceiling. He lays there staring and blows hot air from his mouth.
CLOSE UP: Shaky clips of James in his hoodie, stopping the armed theft at the jewelry store. The armed man's face is barely visible, revealing blue eyes.
CLICK.
The TV shuts off, and we...
Fade TO BLACK.
INT. NURSES STATION - MORNING
James flips through a stack of files off to the side.
MIA
So, are you invincible or something?
James looks up from the file he's reading.
James
It depends. Other supers can still hurt me, but I'm bulletproof.
MIA
Why does your file say O negative?
She raises an eyebrow, thrusting James' high school file.
James
It's to protect my identity. I have a rare, unknown blood type - Sam tested it after he gave me one of his cures. He calls it the super chromosome or S+. Think of it as an enhanced blood type, S+ or AS+, a unique supergene.
MIA
Hey, Superboy.
She smiles, gently tapping his cheeks and brushing her lips against his.
James
Someone took the cure earlier.
James notices Mia's tight-lipped expression, suspicious of Max.
MIA
On a similar note, I have two new piles for you to read once you're finished with those.
She grabs a stack of papers from the nearby shelf.
MIA
Get to work, Super boy.
She playfully breaks up the words in a sing-song voice, puckering her lips as her fingertip presses into the tip of James' nose.
James
Alright.
James starts at the top of the stack and works through the files. Marina enters the room and Mia's expression changes. James quickly shifts the file to his right.
MARINA
Hey, James.
James smiles.
James
Hey, Marina.
MARINA
Are you coming to the blood drive?
James shakes his head.
James
I don't think so. I have a fear of needles.
Marina sighs. Meanwhile, Mia peruses through papers until she looks up and locks eyes with James, her long nails shivering down his spine.
MIA
He means he's considering it.
James scoffs. Mia side-elbows him.
James
That works for me.
Mia grins. James wraps his arm around her shoulders and kisses her forehead.
I/e. Car - noon
James floated high, carrying a cat next to a tree. The cat scratches James, and bolts when James lands on solid ground, leaving him with a few hairline scratches on his arms that fade fast.
Whoosh. James appears next to Derek's car, parked along the road. Derek is on his phone, oblivious to the cars passing by. James taps on the window, and Derek sits up, startled, and rolls it down. James stands with a smug grin.
James
License and Registration?
Derek
Don't sneak up on people like that. How long have you been standing there?
James
Only a few minutes.
Derek shifts and huffs.
Derek
Where's the cat?
James
About a block from here. I let it go already.
James points off into the distance.
Derek
Good, get in the car.
James walks over to the other side of the car and slides into the passenger seat, slamming the door and crushing the handle. Derek scowls at him.
Derek
Damn it, James.
James shrugs.
The radio crackles to life and Garrett Reignson informs over the radio.
Garrett
Ten-four. Is there someone who could check on a ten-ten down at Grand-mart?
Derek rolls his eyes and activates the sirens, speeding down the street. He meets with two boys in the parking lot. Derek whips open his door and heads over to the boys while James opens his door.
Derek
Why are we fighting?
Derek interrogates a broad HAZEL EYED BOY, 13, brown curly locks, and a BLONDE BOY, 13, with deep gray eyes, sitting against the concrete wall near the store entrance. The boy pulls a gun from his waistband, and Derek grabs his gun.
Hazel eyed boy
Relax. One of the supers left this behind, and we were fighting over who would turn it in. We heard there was a reward.
Derek scoffs.
Derek
Who did you hear that from?
The blonde boy raises his hand, pointing to the board behind him.
Blonde boy
There was a flier there until it blew away minutes ago. It didn't give a good picture or description, but it said F.B.I. in big letters.
Derek groans.
Derek
You believed it?
The boys nod.
Hazel Eyed Boy
It gave numbers to call if there were any sightings of a super. He was here, watching from a distance, gazing at the blurred photo of himself, hours ago, with this gun.
The boy gestures to the weapon.
Derek
What were the numbers?
Blonde boy
Something like 2812, 2801, and something else, but I can't remember.
Hazel eyed boy
I think it was 2810 and 2804 or something like that.
Derek takes notes on his digital police pad and plucks the gun from the boy's hands, pulling the safety latch shut. James slumps against the back of the seat.
Derek
You shouldn't be playing with guns, boys. Firearms are dangerous and are only legal to the authorities. There is no warrant issued for anyone and no reward. I need you boys to leave before I call your parents.
The boys' chins melt into their palms.
Blonde boy
Aren't you young, too?
Derek's eyes wander.
Derek
I'm old enough.
The two boys look disappointed.
Hazel eyed boy
So, we're not under arrest?
Derek
No, you're not.
Hazel eyed boy
Is he under arrest?
The hazel-eyed boy gestures to James.
Derek
Have a nice day, boys. I have to get back to my job.
Derek ignores the boys, walks back to his car, and listens to the boys fight over something else.
Derek
I got numbers, but it's not a cell phone number.
James
What happened?
Derek's eyes widen as he turns on the engine and shows James the locked gun.
Derek
This was Max. There was a flier, and the numbers were perhaps codes or something. Whatever it was, we need to speak to Noah again...
James sighs.
James
That's if he wants to. Since his arrest, he has said little to me, but he's tried. So, I thought maybe Sam knew something about this. Perhaps Sam will help us?
Derek
Good point. If we can get Samual to talk, we can get some information from him. My shift should end in an hour, so we have time to mull over questions.
Int. Samual's laboratory - House - day
Derek, dressed in uniform, leans against the basement opening of the laboratory steps. James stands against the wall.
Derek
What do the numbers mean, Sam?
Derek's pad is open he promises no notes.
Samual
They are serial numbers given to the supers. The first two digits stand for the year, and the last two for their number. A group called the 'Superhuman Prodigy Project for Youth' focused on young children and turned them into superhuman soldiers.
Derek
You were a part of this?
Samual
It was a job, and I didn't want to work for them. The group threatened you, your father, and your mother if I didn't work for them.
James
What stopped you from working for them?
Samual looks up from his computer.
Samual
It was you. When your accident happened, the government freed me from my work so that nothing else could go wrong, and their secret findings were safe within the government walls. I didn't tell them about you because I didn't want them to take you from your mother and father.
James
(mumbling)
That's great. Is there anything else you left out, Sam?
Samual
I told you I would explain it when the time comes.
Derek sighs, typing something on his pad.
Derek
How many more kids were in the facility?
Sam folds his laptop in half.
Samual
There were at least twenty before they shut down the program. The other scientists branded the supers on their upper chests with invisible, raised ink.
James
If they branded Max and Noah's chests, could one number Derek wrote be their number?
Samual sits back.
Samual
I'm not sure. I oversaw research and the development of the supergene. I rarely saw my kids, but I believe Max, Noah, and Bryce were older than the other boys. They didn't get branded during that time.
James
Were these kids kidnapped or something?
James stares Samual down from a distance.
Samual
They were my kids born from artificial insemination. I was young and forced into contributing.
Derek
Well, that was a big, unexpected, 'or something'. So, you're saying Max and Noah might be your kids?
James sits on the floor.
Samual
Yeah, the three boys I mentioned are my kids.
James
Why didn't you say anything about this before?
Samual
I told you I would explain everything to you when the time was right.
Derek pulls away from the wall.
Derek
(irritable)
Come on, James. I have to get back to work.
Derek ushers James up the steps.
Samual
Go with your brother, James.
James pushes off the floor, following Derek.
INT. GYMNASIUM - Night
Shocked to see Mia standing in the gymnasium, wearing a scandalous nurse's outfit, which she pulls off with a pair of fake fangs, James watches her work a needle into a student's arm.
Mia
Hey.
James
Hey, Mia.
Mia
I'm almost finished. Take a seat.
Mia skillfully inserts a needle into a student's arm, collecting their plasma in a blood bag. To keep James from feeling overwhelmed, he tucks his face in his sleeve.
Mia
James, just take a deep breath.
Mia presses a cold bean bag against James's forehead, looking into his eyes for a few seconds before she moved to the far corner of the room. She removed a needle from another patient's arm and applies a bandage while the relieved boy settles back into his chair. Marina enters the room carrying more blood bags, which she places on a nearby counter. James exhaled once again. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Marina helps the boy to another room.
James
Do you mind if I leave?
Mia glares at James. James shifts.
Marina exits the room carrying a stack of documents. Mia and and James' gazes lock. For a second, Marina is there. Then, she is gone. James kisses Mia, and Mia jumps in James's arms. Mia pulls out of the brief kiss.
Mia
James, I have something to tell you.
Mia sighs while James kisses her jawline, inhaling deeply.
James
Yeah?
James murmurs against her neck, his tongue lightly tracing her delicate collarbone. Pulling away, he locks eyes with her, captivated by her intense blue gaze as she moans and steps back, breaking the kiss. Their heavy breathing fills the silence of the gymnasium as they continue to watch each other. She leans in close, pressing her tongue to his earlobe and teasingly licking it.
Mia
I haven't been honest with you.
Mia abruptly pushes James back into a chair.
Mia
Max, Mark, he's ready.
Mia steps back, wiping her lips. Mark appears around the corner, munching on a bag of cheese puffs. He tosses the bag aside, dusting off the cheese residue from his dark hoodie. Max forcefully pins James from behind, restraining his chest and arms against the bench, seemingly unfazed that his hood had fallen back.
Mark
James-JAMES-James.
Mark clicks his tongue, holding a vial of Sam's experimental treatment at eye level.
James
So, this was your plan? It's never going to work.
James squirms in his grip, but Maximus's strength is overpowering.
James
You knew about my powers? You've been playing me this whole time.
Max tightens his grip on James' wrist, securing him to the seat.
Mia
Yeah, I played you, Alpha. You're cute, like a little orphan puppy. The saddest part is that I liked you, Super boy. Too bad your powers are about to disappear.
Mia bursts into laughter while Max pulls James forward in the chair. James struggles to resist, but he's no match for Max's super strength.
Max hisses.
Max
Stay still, James, or this will hurt.
With a sheer exertion of his will, Max forces James' mouth open. James looks to Mia for help, but she stands there, giggling like a maniac.
Mark
Mia, come here.
He places the vial into Mia's hand. Mia dumps the vial into James's mouth.
Mia tosses the vial aside and grabs a grimy needle from the counter's edge. Chuckling to herself, she presses the syringe's tip into James' flesh, her fingers tracing the contours of his muscles. For a moment, his vision flickers, shifting from purple to blue before everything...
...Fades to black.
Int. HallWAY - noon
James walks to the bathroom, searching for the dried blood on his left arm.
He glances around, hoping to catch sight of Max before gently wiping water across his bruised and swollen lip. In a state of panic, he dials Derek. Derek answers.
Derek (V.O.)
What's wrong, James?
James leans over to a trash bin to vomit. Nothing comes. He sighs, gripping the phone tightly, momentarily forgetting he can't fly. Instead, he walks out of the bathroom so his voice doesn't echo.
James
The blood drive was a trap. My powers - - they're gone. They took bags of my blood. I knew I shouldn't have trusted anyone connected to Mark Reignson, especially Mia. I feel so stupid.
James paces the empty school hallways, cursing silently. Derek's breathing calms James as he taps his finger on the phone.
Derek (V.O.)
Are you alone?
James looks around, scanning the long corridor. The only person in the school is a janitor, engrossed in his music with headphones on.
James
Yeah.
The tapping ceases.
Derek (V.O.)
I'll come over and pick you up as soon as possible. Stay where you are.
James
No problem.
James sits against a wall, pulling his knees to his chest. James positions himself before a nearby trash can just in case he vomits.
Derek (V.O.)
What are we going to do about your powers?
James
You mean my nonexistent powers?
Derek (V.O.)
Yes. What's the plan?
James leans over to puke again. Nothing.
James
Do you think I know?
Derek
I'm trying to help.
James
I don't want my powers.
Derek sighs.
Derek
You need your powers. Max is likely planning something far worse than this. I spoke to Noah, and he said this was just the beginning of his plan—
James
—You talked to Noah behind my back?
James shifts uncomfortably on the concrete floor.
Derek
Yeah, Max is dangerous, and you could stop him if you weren't so stubborn.
James
(Angry)
This isn't my fault!
James clenches his fists around the phone.
James
Max, Mark, and Mia did this to me, and honestly, I'm glad they did.
Derek hurries into the building, anxiously navigating the hallway until his eyes meet James'.
Derek
Look, maybe you shouldn't wish you never had powers because you're the strongest person I've ever known,
Derek ends the phone call.
James rolls his eyes, grabbing his backpack from the floor.
James
I don't want them.
James brushes past Derek as they hurry down the hallway. They stop at the doorway, and Derek stares into James' eyes, challenging him as if trying to decipher something.
Derek
I'm not letting you give up so easily. If anyone needs you, it's Sam, Dad, and me. Let's go home.
Derek angrily pushes open the double doors and steps outside.
Int. Kitchen - noon
Samual and Derek focus on his laptop on the kitchen counter. Sam drives a needle into James' arm and draws a small amount of blood. He then places a droplet from the syringe onto a blood reader chip and inserts it into a computer.
Samual
Well, the unfortunate news is that he has no powers.
Sam sighs, leaning over the kitchen counter.
Derek
Can't you do something? Max was still a rogue super the last time I checked.
Derek sips his soda and momentarily stares at James, clicking his tongue—Derek grunts, loud and angry.
Samual
At the moment, no, but I'll figure something out. James, you've always regained your powers.
James
Yeah? What if I don't want my powers back this time, Sam?
Sam folds his hands around his beer.
Samual
Maybe that's what's holding you back, James. You would have had them if you weren't so stubborn.
Sam settled, running his hand through shaggy blonde hair.
Samual
You need to focus, James. Max is a dangerous individual.
Derek
Until yesterday, you were the only one who could have stopped him besides Dad, me, and the entire police squad. But as you know, humans are helpless. Find a way to trigger the return of your powers.
James scoffs, grabbing his shirt off the counter.
James
I don't want my powers back.
Samual
You were right about one thing, James. What happened to you when you were six was unfair, but you wouldn't be where you are today if those events hadn't occurred. Your brother is right. This is not something to be taken lightly. We need to find a way to get your powers back.
James buries his face in the granite countertop, still broken from the other day. His fists clench, and he closes his eyes, attempting to focus. His eyes snap open as he briefly feels a flicker of energy in my palms, only to have it dissipate just as quickly.
James
Why does this even matter so much? I lost my powers due to one of your cures a few years ago. Why do you care now?
Sam slams his beer onto the table.
Samual
Because I made Max, I was part of a terrible government group researching and experimenting on kids like you. Now, I need your help to stop him. Your superpowers were fate. I swore to protect you from them, but it happened regardless, and now you're the only one who can save everyone.
James meets Sam's gaze.
James
(Angry)
So, that's supposed to make everything better?
Sam licks his lips and lets out a sigh.
Samual
No, it doesn't, and I'm sorry, James, for everything I put you through. But I can't change the past now.
Beat. James hurries past the kitchen doorway, up the stairs, and slams his bedroom door.
Int. Car - later
Derek observes James as he drives.
Derek
Aren't you going to try to regain your powers at least?
James
I'm working on it, Derek.
James slumps against the seat, chewing on his nails. Derek focuses on the road and fiddles with his police scanner.
Derek
You better hurry before Max wreaks havoc on the city. Without your powers, we'll be defenseless.
James
Is it your mission to get on my nerves? What if I can't do anything about this? What am I supposed to do?
James slumps further in his seat.
Derek
I don't know. Maybe once your powers return, we can figure out a plan.
Derek pulls up in front of the school. As James reaches for the seat belt latch, Derek stops him.
Derek
It's not just Dad who needs your help, James. It's everyone.
James
I got it.
James walks off. Derek rolls down the window.
James
Stay safe, and text me if you see Max, Mark, or Mia. You still seem to have a bit of power left.
He points to a new dent in the door.
Int. Classroom - morNING
James clicks his phone off. Mr. Kinley's eyes dodge Mark and bounce in his direction.
Mr. Kinley
Mr. Knight, care to share the important messages you're sending?
James
I'll put my phone away.
James slips his phone in his bag. Mr. Kinley writes S.P.P.Y. on the board in bold letters.
Mr. Kinley
Can anyone tell me what this stands for?
Mark
I'm not an idiot, but I doubt anyone knows what it stands for.
Mark elicits chuckles from the class.
Mr. Kinley
Very well, smart-ass. I'll tell you all what it bloody means. Stand Paramount with Powerful Youth. But before we continue with English, let me give you a brief narrative about these supers...
James absentmindedly doodles, sketching comic book-like figures on his page.
A frantic knock on the classroom door draws everyone's attention. A disheveled Derek, dressed in his police uniform, looks like he's seen a ghost. Pale and flushed, Derek waves James over. James gathers his belongings and walks with Derek down the empty hallway.
James
Did you find something terrible about Max or my powers?
Derek freezes at the front exit of the school building.
Derek
Something worse. Max took Dad.
Derek lowers his gaze with anger. James clenches his fists, bursting through the school doors alongside Derek.
James
Son of a bitch! I'll regain my powers and then kill that bastard.
James swings open the side door of Derek's cruiser and slides in. Derek joins him.
Derek
You're not killing anyone, James. I'm just as furious about this as you are, but you're supposed to be a superhero. Killing Max won't solve anything and will only make matters worse.
Int. LiVING ROOM - Day
James paces the living room, attempting telekinesis. Sweat trickled down James' forehead. Nothing.
Derek sits on the couch, waiting for something extraordinary to occur. Sam stands in the living room doorway, nervously biting his hangnails, watching the two boys grow anxious.
James
I can't do it.
Sam enters the room and slumps onto the couch.
Samual
I know you can do it.
James
Shut up, Sam! I feel so lightheaded right now, and I can't concentrate--
James nearly collapses.
Samual
Keep trying.
Derek
Damn it, Sam! Give him a break. He's trying harder than ever. If he can't do it, don't push him. He'll only end up hurting himself, and we don't need that right now.
James
Derek's right. I have nothing left in me. My powers disappeared, and I'm useless. They've kidnapped Dad, and who knows what they're doing to him? I'm just as worried and furious about this as you guys are. I don't need anyone testing my patience.
James slumps against my father's chair.
Samual
Superpowers or not, I recall telling you that the supergene runs in your blood no matter what you do, James. So either you push yourself harder, or I'll make you.
Sam rises from his seat, but Derek grabs his arm, stopping him.
Derek
Stop it, Sam! If you don't leave him alone, I'll handcuff you.
Sam slumps against the couch again, burying his head in his hands.
Samual
I'm sorry, okay? We're all on edge right now. Matthew could be dead.
Derek
Yeah, and we're stuck with you, Sam.
Derek eyes him sternly.
Samual
Don't test me, Derek. I may be your uncle, but I'm also the acting parent. It doesn't matter that you're twenty. James must keep trying to regain his powers, or else we're all in trouble.
James huffs.
James
Do you remember any other details about the group you used to work for? Specifically, and this is just a hunch, a man named Alexander?
Sam licks his lips but avoids eye contact with Derek as he glances in James's direction. James sucks in a breath.
Samual
What?
Derek
Something tells me he knows Alexander.
Samual
Your father and I didn't tell you this for your safety, but yes, you have another uncle.
Derek scoffs, shifting away from the couch.
Derek
You mean Henry, right?
Samual
Alexander was the leader. He was narcissistic, making all the rules while everyone else followed. He betrayed our family, and in a way, it was for the best. The government should have shut down the superhuman prodigy project years ago. The last I heard of Alexander, he was involved in other projects. He's dangerous, though. I wouldn't go anywhere near him, James.
James growls, jumping to his feet.
James
This is what Max wants. He's trying to distract us. Right now, they have the upper hand. I'm not going to sit idly by while Max tortures Dad. We have to find him before they do anything.
James storms out of the house with anger and determination and slams the door behind him.
Int. Hotel ROOM - Night
Bound to a heater vent with handcuffs, Matthew lay motionless on the floor. Mark enters the room and throws a bucket of water at him. Matthew jolts back, his shirt soaked, his eyes fluttering open to the bright light filtering through the drapes. Mia stands in the opposite corner and walks over to Matthew, snatching the bucket from Mark and pouring the remaining water over his head.
Mia
Wake up, Mr. Knight. We have something fun in store for you.
Matthew lifts his head, barely meeting Mia's deep aqua eyes. He spits at her, Maximus super speeds across the room, pushing him back, but Mia pulls at his hood, calming him down.
Mia
I see you're just as eager to meet us.
Mia caresses Matthew's bloodied cheek as his eyes widen. His cuffs rattle against the vent, and he spits again.
Matthew
Why are you doing this to me?
Matthew struggles against his restraints.
Mia
You mean you don't know your son has superpowers?
(Mia's eyes widened with delight.)
You're in for a big surprise.
Matthew
James?
Matt's eyebrows furrow, a hesitant glint in his eyes and a frown. Mia frowns, too, smearing the blood from Matt's nose across her shirt. Mark scowls.
Mia
I guess you did know. That spoils my fun.
Maximus super speeds back to the counter. He picks up a needle syringe from the countertop and returns. Mia scratches Matthew's face with her manicured nails, admiring her handiwork from a distance. Max rolls his eyes.
Maximus toys with the tip of the needle syringe filled with James's blood.
Mia
Do you enjoy the sight of blood, Mr. Knight?
Mia smirks.
Max
You squirm, and I'll make things even worse for you.
Matt spits at Max, cleaning his wet lips with his tongue.
Matthew
You can try.
Max slams Matthew's head against the wall behind him. He slumps against the wall, drifting unconscious before Max plunges the needle into his uncle's bicep.
Max
Keep an eye on him, and make sure he doesn't die.
Max walks toward the doorway.
Ext. NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT
Turning at the sound of a distant siren and red lights flashing in the distance, Mark hobbles through the quiet suburban city streets on his casted foot, faithfully alongside his furry friend Gruffly.
James walks by in a baggy, red hoodie with the words "Alpha Is My Homie" in white letters, sweats, sunglasses, and black high-top sneakers, catching sight of Mark.
Gruffly barks and charges at him, forcing James to untangle himself, but he fails so poorly Mark has to force himself to choke down laughter. Gruffly rolls over for a tummy rub from James, nipping and licking his ankles gently to soothe James's anxiety.
Mark
At least Gruffly still likes you.
James clenched his fists, attempting to steady his trembling nerves.
James glares at Mark. Unyielding, Mark closes the distance, casting a dark shadow over James.
Mark
What's the matter, Knight? Afraid I'll take away your special powers? You didn't need them, anyway.
Looking around to see if Max or Alexander was still watching, Mark takes a sharp breath. James winces.
James
Funny. You finished getting high off your power trip yet?
Mark arches his brows, his eyes briefly meeting James as Gruffly lay still in his lap.
Mark
Look, Knight. I didn't mean for things to go this far. I didn't know the cure would work. And to be honest, I liked you better with superpowers.
James
What do you mean, Mark?
Mark sighs, grabbing Gruffly's leash.
Mark
They set me up, Knight. It wasn't my fault. They forced me into it. I didn't expect this to happen.
James stared at me, a mix of confusion and a glimmer of hope swimming in his eyes.
James
What about Mia? Is she in trouble, too?
Mark's shoulders slump.
Mark
She likes Max... But, I came here to tell you, your Dad... he...
Mark shifts uncomfortably before releasing a loud whistle.
Mark
...Gruffly, come.
James
Where's my Dad, Mark?
James' eyes are bloodshot and red, black underneath his right eye, and his face, blotchy from crying. The tears from his eyes fall to the ground.
James' eyes open wide, his pupils dilating purple for a moment, and then, blue. His nostrils flare as he breathed, his breath heavy and hot. His lips tremble.
His hands shake as he holds Gruffly's collar. His face flushes, and anger of red creeps to the surface. Gruffly's eyes are wide with fear, his tongue lolling out the side of his mouth, his breathing fast and shallow.
James
Where is he?
James clings to Mark's dog.
Mark
Give me my dog, Knight.
Mark is ready to pounce. James doesn't budge as Gruffly struggles.
James
Where-is-my-Dad-Reignson.
Mark
I know you wouldn't hurt a dog. You're a hero for fuck's sake.
Gruffly yelps so loud Mark almost thinks James kills the dog. Mark races to his side, ripping the collar from James's fingertips, but he barely has a grip.
Gruffly races by the two teens.
Mark
Run home, boy.
James pushes Mark light enough for him to look up at James,
James
Where's my father?
Mark
I-I....Max and I don't want to hurt anyone. Please, believe me, Knight. It wasn't our idea. Your uncle, Alexander... he's a douche... and I mean very deceitful son of a...
Mark pauses, his eyes shifting to the bush in the distance.
Mark
Go. Get out of here before they kill you.
James
You sure you'll be okay?
Mark
GO!
James takes off down the street. Mark races off to find Gruffly in the opposite direction.
Int. NeiGHBORHOOD - momentS LATER
Derek catches up with James halfway through town, bursting out of a full-on sprint, panting.
Derek
James, wait. We need you.
James
For what? I don't have my powers anymore. I'm useless against Max. What do you need me for?
James exhales cold air. He tries to push past Derek, but Derek blocks James's path, still catching his breath.
Derek
Wait! You're my brother, James, and I care about you. That's not all. Sam mentioned that you still carry the supergene in your blood, no matter what. Your powers are still there, deep inside you.
James halts his steps. Derek bends over, hands on his knees, taking long, tired breaths.
Derek
For someone without powers, you sure are fast.
Derek straightened up and stretches.
Derek
But that's beside the point, James. So, where are we headed?
James
I'm not sure yet, but you didn't have to chase after me. I was coming back as soon as I found Dad.
Derek
You won't find Dad out here, running frantically around the neighborhood in the cold like a headless chicken.
Derek walks beside James this time, matching his pace.
Derek
I know we have to find Dad. I can search the police database again for any information on Noah or Max. Meanwhile, focus on regaining your powers.
Derek bends over again, trying to catch his breath.
James
I'm doing everything I can right now. I just needed some time away from Sam, you know? He's been pushing me extra hard after I lost my powers. It's too much pressure. I have to worry about those three returning to school and causing more trouble instead of focusing on Dad.

Int. Living room - night
A knock on the door startles James awake from my nap on the couch. He glances at the door and slowly opens his eyes. Derek sits in their father's chair, still dressed in his uniform, monitoring James until his powers return.
Derek
Go back to sleep. I've already gotten you out of school for tomorrow, and if you're going to regain your powers, you need rest. Just keep your eyes closed.
James closes his eyes again, groaning and settling back into the couch. Sam nudges James's feet off the floor with a wide grin as he entered the room.
Samual
Get up! We're going to get your powers back.
Samual
Damn it, Sam. I was trying to let him sleep.
Derek growls, adjusting his seat. James sits up, wrapping a blanket around his shoulders.
James
It's too late. I'm awake.
KNOCK, KNOCK. Sam walks over and opened the door. Noah Kinley enters, grinning.
Noah
I was hoping I could make your powers work.
James
What the hell, Kinley? Where have you been all this time?

Noah settles on the couch, leaning back against the cushions.
Noah
Geez. Straight to the interrogations.
Derek
Do you know where Max is or where he might have taken Dad?
Noah shifts his weight on the couch.
Noah
He took your Dad. Strange. I thought he was going after Sam.
Sam paces to the other side of the room with anxiety.
James
Do you have any information about my dad's whereabouts?
Noah frowns.
Noah
Nope. Max and I aren't on speaking terms anymore. It would be better if I stayed with you guys from now on. Besides, I don't like my brother. He has Gray and Uncle Alexander to help him.
Derek
Who the hell is Gray?
Derek turns in his seat, and the attention shifts to James.
Noah
I'll explain it to you later. Right now, let's focus on finding Dad. I'll do everything I can to help. And even if you don't have your superpowers, James, I overheard Max boasting about it the other day. I couldn't care less, but—
James
Shut up, Noah.
Noah raises his hands in surrender.
Noah
Okay, got it, Superboy. No need to twist my arm.
Derek
I told you it would catch on.
Noah
It is quite catchy, especially with this guy.
Noah gestures towards James. James rolls his eyes and crosses his arms.
James
I need to sleep. We can discuss our plans when I'm more awake.
James lays back down and kicks Noah. Noah whacks him back.
James
Ouch.
Samual
Noah!
Noah shrugs.
Int. kitchen - later
James' eyes flutter open on the couch. Derek walks in, texting. His eyes drift away from his phone to James.
James
Where's Sam?
Derek
Sam left the house to get groceries or something related to his experiments. He said he'd be back within an hour, but it's been about an hour and a half since he told me that.
James scoffs, sitting up and stretching.
James
Aren't you worried about leaving him alone with Noah?
Derek
Not really. We're always running late for everything.
Matthew's CRV pulls into the driveway, its lights piercing through the glass doorway, illuminating the staircase. Sam and Noah walk in, carrying pastries, burgers, and fries.
Noah
We've got food.
Derek and James walk over. Noah sips a chocolate shake and hands James a paper bag filled with two burgers and fries.
James walks to the living room, where Derek watches a news report about their missing father. All four guys watch intently. Derek turns off the TV and sinks deeper into the cushions. James grabs the tray of fries and burgers and hands Derek his portion.
Noah
(mouthful of fries)
Sam mentioned that you don't want your powers back. Why wouldn't you want extraordinary powers, mate? Why wouldn't anyone want powers?
Noah plops down next to James with his food.
Derek
Yeah, what the hell is wrong with you?
Derek throws a fry at Noah. Noah pushes James into Derek, who pushes him back.
Samual
James will regain his powers at some point. It's happened before. And even if you don't have them now, James, you still carry the super chromosome in your DNA.
James sighs, leaning back against the couch.
James
Part of me hopes I don't get my powers back, but another part misses them so much.
Noah and Derek roll their eyes in unison.
Noah
Here.
(Noah picks up the fry Derek throws at him from the couch and holds it to eye level.)
Focus on this.
James breathes deeply, focusing on the fry. Nothing.
Noah
You're not trying hard enough. Let me show you how we do it, Knight.
James rolls his eyes. Noah focuses on the fry, quickly lifting it from his palm.
Derek and JAMES
Show-off.
They glance at each other briefly before turning our attention back to Noah. The fry drops back into Noah's palm.
Noah
It will come back, James. I believe it will when you need it or least expect it.
Int. Hotel ROOM - MAGIC HOUR
Sunlight pierces through the curtains, casting its glow on Matthew still handcuffed to the heater vent. With a firm tug, of one of his hands, he breaks free. He quickly removes the second cuff, tossing it aside as he flexes his wrists.
Matthew
(to Maximus)
You bastard. I'm going to bring you and your dad down. And if not me, then James will.
He spits on the floor, turning to face Maximus standing next to him. Max smiles, leaning in close.
Maximus
You already know who my real father is. It's not dear old brother, Alex.
Max pushes him against the wall, wiping away the dried blood from his face. Matthew stares at Maximus in shock.
Max
Uncle Matt.
Max pats his cheek, clearing the crusted blood.
Matthew
I don't see it. Sam's a good guy, unlike you.
Mia enters the hotel, stuff stuffed in her jacket.
Mia
I stole from the thrift store down the street, just like you wanted, babe. It was a piece of cake.
Max
Good.

Mia tosses clothes at Matthew.
Max
Put those on, Knight. We're going out.
Mia
Where's Mark?
She scans the room.
Max
He's busy with the plans.
Mia unzips her hoodie and hands Max a bottle of rubbing alcohol.
Mia
Thought this might come in handy to clean the blood off Matthew's face.
Maximus takes the bottle, opens the cap, and sniffs it before taking a small drink.
Mia rolls her eyes and pouts.
Mia
That's dangerous, you know.
Max
Babe...
(Max takes another swig of the rubbing alcohol.)
I don't bloody care. Let's go.
Int. High school - Hallways - morning
Students stare at a television displaying an explicit video of Noah, Derek, and James arguing in an interrogation room. More video proof of their powers plays on the screen.
Mark watches smugly in the distance. Then he detaches himself from the wall, approaching the two boys.
Mark
Pretty entertaining, if I don't say so myself?
Mark blocks Noah and James' exit.
Noah
I'll kill you!
Mark steps closer.
Mark
Is that a threat, Superboy?
He paused and clicked his tongue.
Mark
Oh, wait! That's the freak's nickname.
Mark's eyes dart toward James. James' knuckles turn white.
Mark
You know what's worse? Daddy Knight isn't even here to witness this, and your brother is too busy to know what's happening right now.
James
Stop!
Mark
Hmm, nope. I want to see how this plays out.
James
You know what I'm capable of.
Mark burst into laughter.
Mark
I know what you used to be capable of.
(Beat.)
Follow me.
Noah and James exchange glances before reluctantly following him.
Hovering about ten feet above the school, Max locks Matthew in a disturbing embrace. Matthew squirms.
Noah
What the hell are you doing? You know this wasn't part of the mission. Besides, it's over. Sam was never a threat, and you bloody knew that!
Amid the chaos, Mark makes his grand escape, blending into the large crowd in front of the high school.
Max
I don't give a damn about the mission anymore, Noah. Dad and I have much bigger plans.
Noah
He's not our father, Max.
Max laughs, soaring higher into the air.
Max
He's a far better father than Sam ever was. Was Dad who rescued us from that wretched government laboratory and raised us?
Max looks at James, his eyes glowing crimson under the morning sun.
Max
No, Sam was too preoccupied with his nephew, James, and his newfound powers to care. Alexander has a plan. A plan to create a new generation of supers. An army. Dad wants to help improve society, empower them, and strengthen them. It's something Sam can never do.
Matthew struggles in the air while Sam and Derek arrive in their cars, rushing towards Noah and James.
Noah
You're wrong. Sam is a good father and would do anything to improve society.
Max
Do you think Dad would spare you after everything you've done, mate? Hey, Dad. Nice to see you.
Sam growls.
Samual
You psychopathic son of a bitch. Release my brother.
Max
I'll let him go right now.
Max releases his telekinetic grip on Matthew, causing him to plummet. Sam swiftly swoops and catches his brother without warning. Derek and James stare in shock.
Max
Son of a bitch, Dad. I saw it coming.
James
Fight me, Max.
(James steps forward.)
I know that's what you want. So come and do it already.
Max
And the powerless hero steps forward. Un-fucking-believable.
Max swoops down to the ground and lands beside James.
Max
This will be easy, James. Power is something you lack now. You're—
Max shoves James across the sky. James lands forcefully on the pavement in the schoolyard.
Max
—Weak.
On the sidelines, Sam lands on the ground with Matthew. Max lifts Derek into the air, gripping him tightly like a constrictor. Derek struggles, but it's futile. James crawls across the ground and pushes himself up.
James
(weak)
Stop.
Max stands before James now in seconds.
Max
Alpha, huh? You seem like a worthless bastard to me.
Noah clenched his fists, ready to pounce, but he holds back.
James
Max, don't do this.
Summoning every ounce of strength, James pushes himself onto his knees. Max uses his telekinesis to grip James and Derek now. Meanwhile, Derek hangs in the air.
Max tightens his grip, pinning Derek and James in place and forcing James to look up. Derek whimpers in pain while Sam tends to Matthew in the distance. Max leans down, hovering in front of James.
James
Scared, freak?
James gathers every ounce of his strength and taps into an untapped reservoir of energy while his family watches with wide eyes. His body charges with a righteous rage as James leaps to his feet and pushes both palms toward Max's chest. His eyes glimmer like amethysts as the floors quake beneath them, sending Max flying and crashing against the wall behind him.
James heals rapidly, just like Superman without kryptonite, cleaning away the clotted blood and absorbing its flavor with a few swipes across his lips. Then Derek drops from the sky.
James catches him and places him aside. He clenches his fingers open and closed.
Derek
Alright! Alpha got his powers back! Three supers against one! Go get 'em, tiger!
Max emerges from the rubble, his eyes glowing crimson, as he hovers in the air.
Grace appears, no longer concealing her identity, swooping through the air alongside her brother. The pieces fall into place, and Gray suddenly makes sense with a newly cropped hoodie and baggy sweats. She grins, floating next to Max.
Grace
You miscalculated, lover boy.
Derek looks up at her, wide-eyed.
Noah
Gray?
Derek and Noah exchange awkward glances. There's a brief exchange of confused glances as Grace locks eyes with her father.
Samual
Grace?
Samual watches her flip him off smugly.
Derek
I knew it!
James
Game on!
Noah, Sam, and James ascend into the air. Derek rushes over to tend to his father.
James
It's three against two. I suggest you stand down.
Max chuckles.
Max
That's cute.
Beat. Max hurls towards James with full force. The two boys tumble from the sky to the ground below, enveloped in dust.
Grace smiles, raising an eyebrow as she observes Sam and Noah.
Grace
Which one of you is up for a fight?
Grace playfully points her index finger between them and ultimately lands on Noah.
Grace
You're dead, Noah Samuel Kinley.
She propels forward, crashing into Noah like a linebacker, and they plummet swiftly toward the ground. Sam descends to help Noah.
Dust and dirt from the fight between Sam, Noah, and Grace consume Max and James. They resemble survivors emerging from a volcano rather than combatants locked in battle.
Max's face contorts with fury, his intense gaze fixed on James. He grips the sides of James' sweatshirt and forcefully pushes him to the ground. James's head collides with the hard surface, causing a jarring impact that sends James through pain and disorientation.
Max and James clash in a blur, but Max has the upper hand. Max forces James down onto the gritty ground, a smug grin on his face as he holds him there. Struggling against him, James finally grabs his arms and flings Max aside. The two both spring back up in sync, standing like two dueling boxers. They circled each other cautiously while, in the background, Sam and Noah subdue Grace on the pavement. Neither of the boys made a move.
Max
I'm going to kill you, James Everett Knight.
James
Do you think so? I'd look behind you if I were you.
Max huffs, spitting blood onto the ground, and reluctantly turns his attention to Grace, who struggles beneath Sam and Noah's strength. Then he backs away, wiping blood from his swollen lip like a coward.
James
Maybe you should call it a day for now.
Max sneered, spitting more blood onto the ground.
Max
I'll be back for you, Knight, and when I return, watch your back.
Max looks at Grace before taking off. Sam and Noah release Grace, and she follows suit. Derek aids his unsteady father in approaching Sam and Noah, regaining his balance.
Derek
Dad seems okay, but he needs plenty of rest. Maybe we should take him to the hospital--
Matthew
—No hospital, Derek. It's not safe for any of us. We need to leave Phoenix right away. I never sold our old house in Los Angeles. We can move back there tonight and return for the rest of our belongings later.
James
What about Max and Grace?
Samual
We'll have to take our chances. They won't pursue us. But Noah is coming with us.
Derek
Agreed. He can help protect us for the time being.
Noah
Who knows what Alexander and Max are planning, but with both of them involved, it can't be anything good.
Int. Hotel ROOM - noon
Max discards his unfinished sandwich into the trash bin by the sink. Mark holds James's blood bag up to eye level.
Max
What the hell are you doing?
Mark's eyes widen. Mia bursts into the hotel room, clutching two syringes in her hand.
Mia
Are you going to do this or not? You do not know what I had to go through to get these needles.
Mia sighs, disgust clear as she extends her hands.
Mark
I'm ready.
Mark grabs the syringes from Mia's trembling fingers. Max rolls his eyes and hops onto the countertop, observing the two.
Mark pulls back the plunger, and blood flows out of the bag. He hands a syringe to Mia.
Mark presses the needle to his skin. he glances at Mia, her eyes reflecting the glimmer of the overhead lights.
Mia
Are you ready?
Mia grimaces, pressing the needle against her porcelain skin.
Mark
Where are you, Max?
Max stands in the room's corner, his hood covering his head, holding a dry syringe.
Mark looks back at Mia. Her lips, once peach-colored, are now tinged with a deep shade of blue, and her comatose eyes stare blankly at the syringe hanging from her upper arm. Mark glances at his forearm, feeling an icy discomfort trickling down his fingertips.
Staying conscious became an arduous task. Mark's head swims as his body crashes to the floor. Another set of dark amethyst eyes enters his blurred vision as Mark's pulse slows. The man's eyes shift to a shade of blue. Alexander Kinley.
Mark
Is the plan working?
Max's voice echoes in Mark's head.
Max
Yes.
Mark's vision flickers to darkness.

Ext. NEIGHBORHOOD - MAGIC HOUR
Matthew counts the boxes and bags as the boys load the final ones into the car. Their trunks overflow with most of our belongings, illuminated by the mid-morning sunrise in the driveway.
Matthew
You all packed and ready to leave?
Derek
I'm ready.
Derek firmly shuts the back of his vehicle while his father finishes closing the trunk of his CRV. A group of police officers lingers nearby, poised to escort them safely to the border of Arizona and California.
Noah
I'm good to go as well.
Samual
Are you taking the longer route?
Samual stands attentively next to the car, palms pressed against its exterior. Noah and James exchange glances.
Noah
One of us needs to monitor the skies while Matthew drives.
In the background, Matthew shakes his head skeptically.
Matthew
I'm not entirely convinced that's a great idea. What if Alexander or—
Noah
That's the plan, mate.
Noah scans the neighborhood as the police officers attempt to control some curious onlookers.
Noah
And those guys will tail us for approximately a mile outside the border.
He gestures toward the rumbling police cars in the distance.
Noah
(to James)
You can fly with me to California if that's what you want to do, James.
Noah cracks his knuckles and gives Derek a pat on the shoulder.
Noah
You good?
Derek gazes up at our two-story house.
Samual
It's going to be alright, Derek.
Derek takes a deep breath and exhales slowly.
Derek
I hope so.
Derek's eyes fix on the roof where we used to spend countless hours talking and hanging out.
Matthew chuckles.
Matthew
Me too, bud.
Matthew
Come on. I want to get on the road now before anything else happens.
Noah
James is coming with me, just in case.
Derek scoffs.
Derek
In case of what?
James
I'll go with Noah.
All eyes turned to James.
Matthew
Are you sure, James?
James leans against the car.
James
It will keep me occupied for the next few hours while we wait for you guys.
Derek
It's at least a four-hour drive.
James
I was thinking of taking Noah to the comic shop to keep him busy.
Derek's eyebrows shoot up.
Derek
Pete's old place?
James
Yeah.
Derek scoffs, offended.
Derek
You're going without me?
James
Yeah. I thought Noah would enjoy it.
Samual claps his hands together.
Samual
Alrighty, we should hit the road before Alexander and Max find us.
Matthew
He's right. By the time we reach there, it'll be sundown.
Derek
I can drive.
Matthew shakes his head, dangling the keys.
Matthew
I've got it, Derek.
Derek frowns.
Matthew
You take your car, and we'll meet there.
Noah
We'll leave too.
James
Give us a call if you need anything.
Samual
Stay safe.
Noah ascends higher into the sky.
Noah
I'll race you, Knight.
James lifts off the ground.
James
You're on!
Matthew enters the SUV, while Derek and Sam enter their cars.
WHOOSH! Noah and James race off into the sunrise.
The End.
