Chapter 15

Not more than an hour later Mike's brother came home. At that point Jane and Nicky were still in the kitchen trying to tidy up a little the absolute mess that Mike and the twins had caused and the trio of destruction was in the living room watching some cartoons. As soon as the twins saw him entering the house they both run screaming towards him. They grabbed him from his feet and when he entered the kitchen he was dragging with him a child on each foot. The result was hilarious and Nicky couldn't help herself from laughing.

“Derek. Get yourself untangled from the monsters that are hovering on your feet. We need to talk about something. Girls go back to your uncle for a little while. I need to have a little talk with your father. NOW” Jane said and the twins sensing their mother's foul move they untangled themselves from their fathers feet and they run towards the living room yelling.

“Uncle, uncle, daddy is in big trouble. Mammy is going to punish daddy. He was bad” Nicky couldn't help but smirk at them. They were one crazy bunch all of them. And she loved it. She really missed having some family to go back to everyday after work. That was why she didn't have any problems staying overtime at work. The extra money she got was not the only reason. The fact that she didn't have anyone at home waiting for her was no reason for her to hurry back home. She was about to start depressing but the scene evolving at her was too funny to let her.

“Derek, close the kitchen door. I don't want the kids to listen to us. I am being careful, not like some other people I know.”

“Who are you referring to?” He asked while closing the door obediently. He saw that she was really mad and in times like that he knew better than being contradictory.

“You of course. Who else.” She half whispered half yelled.

“What did I do now.” He asked looking all guilty but obviously clueless of what he could have possibly done.

“You went on gossiping on the phone with your friends about Mike's life which is unacceptable. Not only that, but you did it while the girls were listening to you. Don't you pay any attention to what you say? Do you have any idea what was the first thing they asked Nicky when they saw her?”

“No” he looked sheepishly between Jane and Nicky. “Hi Nicky I am Derek, we didn't get a chance to introduce ourselves.” He added and extended his hand toward Nicky. She took it blushing a little, feeling embarrassed because she knew what would come next out of Nicky's mouth.

“Ya now that you are formally introduced with this sweet sweet girl, let me inform you that your daughters asked her for a greeting whether she was Mike's lover.” Derek looked at her panicked while Jane was now redder than the tomatoes on the salad in front of her.

“Eerg are you sure that's what they said. I don't think they heard it from me. I wouldn't imagine speaking like that in front of them.”

“They overheard you talking to Josh one night when they went to get some water from the kitchen.”

“Oh. Then I am not to be faulted I didn't know they were there. They are not supposed to be out of their rooms at night. It is not my fault they were wondering around”

“Of course it is your fault they take that mischief gene from you.” Jane said haughtily.

“From me? I was the quiet one while we were growing up. You were the one that was constantly getting into trouble.” Derek accused her back

“It was never my fault. Your brother always got us into trouble. I was the scape goat in all instances. It's your family's genes that cause all the problems” Jane defended herself but there was a twinkle in her eyes that belied her statement. Nicky would bet she was the instigator of many cases of mischief she and Mike got into while they were kids. “And in any case you shouldn't gossip about your brother, he is a wonderful person and he deserves better than that.”

“I wasn't gossiping. I was just glad that Mike has gotten himself a girlfriend after all this time and I shared my joy with our mutual friend Josh, knowing that he would be thrilled too.”

“I am not Mike's girlfriend” Nicky interfered. I am kind of a friend. We met a few days ago.”

“Ya, well give him some time sweetie. My brother always gets the girl. I don't know his secret but he has a 100% success rate. I had to crawl and crawl till I got Jane to be my wife.”

Nicky was now ash paper white at his statement. Was she really one of Mike's conquest's to be? Should she be offended or flattered by it? These thought passed instantly from Nicky's head while she was looking blankly at Derek.

“Don't be such an ass Derek” Jane whispered yelled at him. “You are going to scare her away. Go inside with your daughters before Mike spoils them irrevocably.” Derek smirked at both of them, turned around and left the kitchen.

“Don't mind him. He is really stupid some times. He doesn't mean what he said about Mike. Mike is a good person and he always cherished his past girlfriends. Derek is just jealous because people always like Mike from the first time they lay eyes on him. Not out of pity because his blind. He has a quality in his soul that draws everybody in, whether they want it or not.”

“I know what you mean. But really I am not his girlfriend.” Nicky protested.

“Well you can't blame us for wishing, can you?”

“No but I am sure that Mike wouldn't want a girl like me for a girlfriend. So it is a mute point isn't it?”

“Why wouldn't he want you?” Nicky looked at her curiously.

“I am not very social, I don't really have any friends, no high education and lets face it I am not really beautiful. On the other hand he is so vibrant, so full of energy and lets not forget he is a world known writer.”

“Don't let that phase you. He just has an overstimulated imagination. He always had. And there is nothing wrong with you from what I have seen this far. You are very pretty and interesting and I can't imagine why you wouldn't have friends. But that is not important. You have us now.”

“I really don't want to be a burden. You already have too much to deal with. With the kids and your husband and Mike.”

“Nonsense. You will help me with all that and I will gain a new friend. It was time Mike brought us a girl this good to meet.”

“He doesn't bring friends often?” Nicky couldn't help but ask. Her curiosity about Mike's previous girlfriends was in a peak, but she couldn't just go ahead and ask Jane about them.

“Most of his friends are common friends. The new additions to our company are usually his girlfriends.”

“So that explains why you assume I am one of his girlfriends. Though I don't see why you would think such a thing. I am sure I am totally different from his usual type.” Nicky's eyes were full of question marks about his exes. Jane knew right away that that was the real reason she made such a silly statement. She was fishing for information, which meant she was really interested in his brother in law and was clearly too insecure to do something about it. At that point she decided to put the poor girl out of her misery. It was clear that she was not going to ask anything else.

“You are right at that. You are nothing like his previous girlfriends.” She said and Nicky's face dropped in sheer disappointment. She clearly hoped that she had a chance with Mike. “His previous girlfriends were manipulative bitches that were going for Mike's fame and money. And they were very canning. They had searched a lot about him and his interests so that they could put on a facade that suited what he is really looking into a woman. I always saw through them but Mike, even though he is more intuitive than the rest of the men, he is a man nevertheless and he didn't figure them out for the fraud they were right away. The last one nearly convinced him to propose to her, but thankfully that disaster was evaded in time.” Color returned to Nicky's face but now her eyes were devoid of question marks and full of anger.

“Why didn't you say something to him? Why didn't you protect him from them?”

“Well I tried but you know men. They think they know everything, which of course is so far from the truth... At least I think I planted a seed of a doubt and then he figured out the rest by himself. He is a very smart man. But some times he is biased with women.”

“And how can you be so sure that I am not like those women. After his fame and money?”

“Honey, you wouldn't be able to lie, deceit and manipulate someone, even to save your life. Everything you think and feel shows like a painted picture on your face.” Nicky blushed at that.

“I can hide my feelings” she said defensively.

“Sweetie the kindness and innocence of your soul shines through you. There is no way you can hide it. And it is a good thing, don't be ashamed of it. I am really glad Mike brought you to us.”

“I bet you say that to all the girls he brings.” Nicky teased her, but Jane looked her with a horrified look.

“Trust me I don't. I never welcomed any of those bitches.” She said haughtily and exited the kitchen. Nicky chuckled and followed her.

The sight that greeted them when they reached the living room was something that Nicky could only describe as unbelievable. Both Mike and Derek were in all four and had a child riding on their backs. They were pretending to be horses that battled each other according to the commands of their riders. The fact that one of the horses was blind, added to the chaos that the living room was at that point. She didn't know whether to laugh or scream. Tables and chairs were turned over, a vase full of flowers was lying on the floor, thankfully not broken and even a painting from the wall had been misplaced.

“How in the world did you manage to make such a mess of everything?” Jane shouted exasperated. “We left you alone only five minutes?”

Instantly they all pointed on one another and said “He/ She did it.”

“Nicky could you please help me make it look like a living room again? It is obvious I am not going to get anywhere with this lot.” Nicky obediently helped her while the four criminal were sitting silent at the couch, a huge smirk in all their faces.

“Your fate would have been a lot worse but I don't want to start spreading detentions on Nicky's first visit here. Next time you are not going to be so lucky, so it better not be a next time.” Jane said sternly to all of them and the twins instantly looked gratefully towards Nicky. That thing alone was clearly reason enough for them to adore her.

The night proceeded quiet smoothly after that. Their friends came and they all sat at the table to eat all the things the two women had prepared for them. Nicky sat next to Mike and the his closeness gave her assurance and confidence to participate in all the conversations held during dinner. They never made her feel bad about being a waitress even though they all had more prestigious jobs. They were very intrigued from all the stories she had to tell them about her customers.

“So Nicky tell us, who was your most intriguing customer in your new workplace so far. Mike hangs out there all the time but he never shares any of the juicy stories.” Josh asked her while they were serving with Jane desert and Nicky fought not to blush again while remembering that he and Derek were discussing her non existent sex life with Mike. Nevertheless she didn't hesitate to answer him honestly.

“Well I don't know if my answer is going to satisfy your curiosity, cause my most intriguing customer so far has been Mike.”

“You here Mike? She finds you intriguing. Not like nosy like the rest of us.” Josh told Mike and winked at him. “I am winking at you but you can't see it” he added making everybody laugh and Nicky swallow her tongue.

“Don't mind him Nicky.” Josh's wife Helen told her. “He is sort of brainless but we try to accept him like he is.” Nicky smiled at her heartily.

“No it is no big deal. Though just to state the obvious, you would agree with me assessment. I mean here you go having a customer come in everyday, sit on the same spot alone for hours doing nothing, yet coming back every day for more. Well that is intriguing. When you see Mike you immediately get the idea that he is up to something, I just couldn't figure out what that was.”

“If you put it that way, I would have probably called the police on his ass if I were on your shoes.” Josh said and immediately all the other ladies yelled at him.

“Language Josh, there are kids dinning with us.” Josh looked sheepishly at his plate and apologized.

“I am sorry. I just got carried away. It is not everyday we get new blood on this table. I am fed up seeing the rest of you all the time.”

“Imagine how we feel having you for company.” Mike added and everyone burst out laughing.

“Well now that everyone has finished his dessert it is time to move to the living room and for certain someones to hit their beds.” Jane announced.

“Mammy now, it is not fare. Why do you get to stay up and have fun.” Rosy said pouting.

“Ya we want fun too” Lily added.

“Well you had enough fun for tonight. Up up to your rooms. Derek it is your time to put them to bed.” Jane said

“Nope, it is Mike's time.”

“Derek, Mike doesn't leave here anymore. He is a visitor, try to respect him like one and don't dump one him all your duties.”

“Girls who do you prefer me tucking you to bed or uncle Mike?”

“Uncle Mike!” They both yelled.

“Well that one was a unanimous vote.” Derek smirked and Jane bend down and whispered in his ear.

“You are really an ass, you know that?”

“Come on baby, you know they love him. There was no chance they would go to sleep thinking he is downstairs. Best odds are he takes them to bed tells them a story and ten minutes later they are off like a candle light.”

“You are still an ass.” Jane insisted

“Come on little monsters. It's time for your bed time story. Nicky could you please come with me. I think I might need help with them.”

“Yes of course.” Nicky said and followed him upstairs.

As soon as they went upstairs the friends downstairs gathered around in the living room like a group of conspirators.

“She is good for him” Helen said. “I like her.”

“Yap, she is a keeper. We just have to push them on the right direction.” Jane said.

“Hey don't push them anywhere. Mike is more than capable of figuring out everything by himself. He is the genius of this group not us. Lets not forget that.” Derek chipped in to defend his brother.

“Yes well I think we need to boost up Nicky's confidence a little bit. She doesn't have any friends and that makes her more shy than usual.” Jane admitted

“Why wouldn't she have any friends? She is a delight!” Helen said.

“From what Mike has managed to learn and cared to share with me, she lost her parents when she were little and although her grandmother took her in she had to work to make ends meet and didn't have too much time to socialize or play dress up with her classmates.” Jane filled in.

“I think we can fix that. We will do have some girl bonding time during a shopping trip on her next day off.” Helen started planning.

“Wouldn't it be better if she had some bonding time with Mike.” Josh tried to put some sense into them.

“You know nothing about those things let us figure it all out.” Helen dismissed him and continued conspiring with Jane. Derek just gave him a speaking glance, telling him that he should probably not try to stop them. He probably would get hurt in the process.

In the mean time on the upper floor of the house Nicky helped the twins into their pajamas and to brush their teeth while Mike waited patiently for them by their beds. Soon both little devils were running towards their beds for their story. The story he told them was enchanting and by the time they had slept Nicky was looking at him starry eyed living the story in her mind.

“I think it is safe for us to leave.” He whispered and Nicky was startled out of her dream. She got up quickly and followed him out of the twins bedroom. She was still not focused on her surroundings, so when Mike stopped and turned towards her near the stairs she bumped on him. He immediately caught her so that she didn't fall down the stairs.

“Oh I am sorry I wasn't paying any attention.” She apologized and tried to get of his embrace, but he was holding tight on her.

“You have nothing to be sorry about. I on the other hand have to thank you for being such a treasure by my side today.” He said bending towards her and captured her lips with his.
