Chapter 13

“Girls this is Nicky.” Jane introduced her to the twins. “Nicky these are Rose and Lily, my adorable little devils. Rose is the one in red and Lily the one in pink.” Nicky turn around to greet them, but before she had the chance to say something Rose spoke.

“Nicky are you uncle Mike's lover?”

Nicky looked at them stunned. She didn't know what to answer to them. As a matter of fact she didn't expect them to know such words let alone the meaning of them. And how come they had come to associate her and Mike like that. What had he told his family about her and did he really discuss such things with his nieces? All those thoughts run through her mind instantly. She didn't know what to tell them.

“No” She said while blushing like crazy. Instantly the voice of Mike sounded gruff, showing his obvious anger.

“Where in the world did you here something like that? Jane what are you teaching them? They are way too small to know such things.” Jane seemed speechless looking straight ahead as if she was in a trans. Mike's voice got her out of her trans like state and now she was angry too.

“Of course I am not teaching them things like that, why would you even think I would? Rose where did you here that Nicky is Mike's lover?” Rose hearing her mothers anger combined with the anger she had heard in her uncle's voice, who was always very kind to her, she started whimpering realizing that she had done something bad, although she didn't know what. When Mike heard her distress he knew she was going to cry. He hated it when they cried, he didn't want anyone distressing them, they were too precious.

“No no don't cry Rose, you didn't do anything wrong. It is just that the words you used are grown up words, not for little angels like you to use them.”

“Mike stay out of this.” Jane told him. “I want to know where they heard such a thing. I don't want them speaking like that and I am making sure that they don't get to hear them at home either.

“Mammy it is not my fault. I heard daddy saying that. I didn't know it was something bad. Nicky looks like a kind lady so I thought it is something good.” Rose said apologetically. “Please don't punish me mammy. It really wasn't my fault. You can ask Lily. She heard daddy too.”

“She is telling the truth mammy. We heard daddy speaking with uncle Josh on the phone.” Lilly added trying to get her sister out of trouble.

“When was that? Did daddy say those things while you were in the room with him?” Jane asked them, furious at her husband this time. If her look was any indignation he was going to have an earful when she saw him next.

Nicky saw through the review mirror the girls who looked at each other and then at their hands sheepishly. They had obviously done something fishy and were feeling guilty right now.

“I am waiting girls.” Jane said threateningly. Rose sighed and resigned she started confessing.

“We heard him last night. We were in our beds but I got a little bit thirsty. I went to the kitchen to get my sippy cup and Lilly came with me so that I wasn't alone in case I there were monsters in the hallway. We don't know if daddy saw us. We didn't mean to hear anything I was just thirsty.” She said with a pout that Nicky found adorable.

“So we are having monsters at our house hallways?” Jane said tersely obviously not buying their story and not affected by how cute they were at the moment.

“Yes mammy big ones. They are going to eat us if they found us alone.” Lilly said wide eyed.

“They get their wild imagination from you, you know. I am totally going to put the blame on you” Jane was telling Mike this time.

“Why am I to be faulted. It is my stupid brother that doesn't watch what he is saying.” Mike said defensively.

“Language Mike. I am trying to solve a problem here. Not create even more. And by the way little misses you are not off the hook. I always live a jag of water and cups in your bedroom. You didn't have to go to the kitchen in the middle of the night when you were both supposed to be sleeping.” Jane said.

“But my sippy cup was in the kitchen.” Rose tried vainly to excuse herself.

“We will talk about that at home girls tonight when it's time for you to go to bed. It is obvious that there are some things we haven't clarified enough about what happens after your bed time is up.”

“Oh and just to make some things clear. What you heard your daddy say about me and Nicky is not a bad thing at all and Nicky is a kind and loving person.” Mike told the twins.

“So she is your lover!” Rose exclaimed? “And what exactly is a lover?”

“That is something I don't want you to hear from your mouth for many many years. When the time is right I will explain everything to you.” Jane told the twins.

“Mammy you are not being fair. You always explain things to us.” Lilly whined.

“Yes but some things you are not big enough to understand them. So you will have to wait a little more. I am sure now uncle Mike wants to tell you a story he wrote especially for you. Isn't that right Mike.” Jane said looking pointedly at Mike looking at him through the review mirror. Mike got the underlying meaning of her words and started telling them a story that he obviously got out of his mind in the spur of the moment, in his attempt to make the twins forget all about what the meaning of the word lover was. The twins loved hearing their uncle's stories and as soon as he began narrating they both hung from his every word.

Jane looked sideways at Nicky. She was all flushed and bothered from the whole conversation. This was not how this whole day supposed to go. This was one hell of first meeting with Mike's family. Jane tried to make her feel better.

“Hey don't sweat. We are constantly dealing with situations like this. Those hellions back there can't be contained at all. They are the queens of mischief. You never know what will come out of their mouth. I hope you aren't embarrassed by this whole thing. I am sure they misheard the conversation of Derek.”

“What they said about me and Mike. It is not true. I don't know what might have given your husband that idea. We just met. You could say we are in the beginning of a friendship.” Nicky tried to clarify the situation speaking in a low voice so that the twins didn't hear her. She didn't want to start a new round of questions from them.

“I believe you. Though Mike obviously likes you. He doesn't invite just anyone to our home to meet the twins.” Jane replied and Nicky felt all warm and fuzzy inside at the thought of Mike considering her to be special.

“We are just friends.” She insisted. “I hope I am not intruding today. I have already told Mike that it was too much for him to invite me to a family gathering.”

“Nonsense. This isn't some great family gathering that you have to be afraid about intruding Nicky. We gather with Mike and some friends of ours almost once a week. It is an attempt of ours to keep our bonds with each other. Plus we are really having fun together. Most of our friends are from our school years. We were a very tight group and believe it or not Mike has always been the glue to hold us together. He has this super ability to diminish our differences.” Jane said looking at Mike in the back telling a story to the twins, lost in the story and oblivious of his surroundings.

“Yea I can definitely picture him doing that. He is amazing. He seems to have an inner strength that few people have. You should be proud of all he has accomplished.”

“Oh that I am, though I never doubted that he would do great things. He always was my rock while we were growing up, though some people would have thought otherwise. There was not a thing he wouldn't try to do. Even things that were considered quite crazy. Of course afterwards no one believed he was the instigator and I always got the burn of it no matter how we would both swear that it was not my fault.” Jane shook her head in remembrance. “Those were some nice years.” She said nostalgically.

“Yet you ended up married to his brother, not him. Why? He is smart kind gorgeous and in one word totally loveable.” Nicky said feeling a little bit jealous of the close relationship she seemed to have with Mike.

“Ha me and Mike? That could have never happened. We always considered each other as brother and sister. There was never some kind of underlying passion for us. His brother though was a totally different case. He used to not give me a second glance while we were growing up and always teased me to death. He was a mortal enemy to me, until he revealed to me that his actions were driven from his being in love with me. Well guess what. All that teasing and fighting with him did make me develop feelings for him.” She smiled more to herself, obviously remembering some of their first private moments.

Soon enough their discussion ended with their arrival to Jane's and Derek's home. Jane got out and helped the girls and Mike out of the car. Each girl grabbed one of Mikes hands and together they guided, or more like dragged him into the house chattering about the story he had just told them. Mike was quiet not really listening to them. He had heard Nicky's and Jane's conversation word by word even though he was telling the girls a story. Listening to people around him talk while he was doing some other thing was second nature to him by now. He really liked the way she had appraised him, though he would prefer she was not that negative about them being a couple.

He would have to work on that, he decided. Starting today.
