From the author: I was actually a little sad when I finished Ways Of Grieving, because I found I genuinely liked writing the story and writing about Roland.

 This actually isn't the first time I've gone with this kind of character (Such as Jacques Duval and Radu), but Roland was still getting over the death of wife when the story opened, as it had been about two years and he was still getting a grip on himself after all that time.

 I think his time with Freya Mikaelson really helped Roland in learning about moving on, because he really did fall for Freya. However, I never planned for Roland and Freya to be together in the end. I don't know why, but I just felt like it wasn't in the cards for them. So, in the end, Freya eventually ended up with Keelin, as is canon, while Roland went back to England and eventually wound up in a romance with his childhood friend Andrew Grainger. I don't know about anyone else, but I think I'm happy with the way it ended.
