From the author: My original idea for TB was a 'Beauty and the Beast' sort of story, but I think it really ended up becoming its own story in the end (now that it's finished, I really can't think of many similarities).
Finding a faceclaim for Radu was difficult. I couldn't seem to find the right person until I thought of Kelker-Kelly, and he seemed to fit the image of Radu in my mind the best of all my choices.
Radu is a very lonely person when the story opens. He had lost his entire family thanks to Klaus Mikaelson, and after murdering his own wife without realizing what he was doing until it was too late (that's explained more thoroughly in the book itself), he hardly ever leaves his castle. Deep down, he's honestly afraid of going out into the world, and he's afraid he'll just cause more chaos.
Despite that, and acting so hard-hearted on the outside, Radu did have a good heart. In that way, he and Mikael were alike (because I believe he also had a good heart somewhere deep down), and I think that was why they bonded as they did.
