From the author: Mary Butler is still a bit of a mystery to me. I wrote "Arthur's Tale" as a way of explaining Arthur Hall's past and where he had come from, and I wound up with another character with a mysterious background.

 This is a short summary of her background, though: Mary was born and raised in London. Her father was a doctor, and her brother was training to be one, so the family had a decent income. However, Mary was turned by Elizabeth, who seemed to be the leader of the London vampires. She killed Mary's family, as she did with the rest of her turns, so that she would have no prior attachments. But instead of submitting, Mary rebelled.

 It's safe to say that Mary was Arthur's first love, and he may have been hers. After she was murdered by vampire hunters in 1865, Arthur made a vow to himself to murder any vampires he came across. Though he moved on after her death, she still has a special place in his heart, and the reason he bought the pubThe Jolly Fiddler and gave it that name because she had loved the place.
