 From the author: Far as I know, After A Thousand Years is the first TVD story on Wattpad that has an Esther/OC plotline, a fact which I am proud of (though I'm not sure I've actually impressed many people).

 If you do come across a story with an OC that's part of the Mikaelson family, it's very likely that they're another one of Mikael and Esther's children. Lise, however, was part of the Mikaelson family because she was Mikael's younger cousin, and was like a little sister to him.

 That was exactly Lise's dilemma. She was a lesbian, and was forced to keep it secret (though Mikael did suspect, but he said nothing to her on the matter). She fell in love with Esther, but could never do anything about it. They wouldn't have been allowed to be together in the first place, and Esther was Mikael's wife. Because of her love and loyalty towards her cousin, Lise simply did nothing.

 It's not certain whether or not Esther knew that Lise was in love with her. I have thought about it, and I think it might have been possible that Esther had some idea. In any case, I wanted to end the book the with the possibility of something. That was why I made the last line of the book, 'They were only cousins by marriage, after all'.
