From the author: In a way, I guess Birgitta is your typical mother. She's very protective of her children, and loves them fiercely (if you ever think about messing with them, remember she as a wand). She loves Gustav and Alice, and Tommy as well. Tommy was only a baby when his mother died and his father remarried, so Birgitta took it upon herself to adopt him, and it does give her joy to hear Tommy call her 'Mom'.

 Birgitta is also a florist, and runs her own shop. Since Brigitta is a witch, I imagine her having some sort of magical florist's shop, and any non-magical person who goes in might not realize just how magical the place really is.
