From the author: Though it was only mentioned briefly in the story, Amalia did have a good life before she became a vampire. She had a husband and children she loved and who loved her in return, and enjoyed her place as a midwife. She didn't say what the circumstances were in which Octavius turned her into a vampire, but she never truly forgave him for turning her, though she did mourn him after his death at the hands of the Volturi.

 Amalia wasn't a bad person, despite not always making good choices. After she joined the Volturi, she became more attached to Caius than she meant to. It was probably because she could sense he was a lonely soul like her, and she became very attached to him, even asking him to leave the Volturi with her. I like to think that if things were different, Caius might have just said yes.
