My Bestfriend is a Jerk

Chapter 26

[Rosie’s POV]

“What is this place?”

I stared at the cute little bistro, almost empty. It stood alone with the whole exterior built with cream bricks, covered in vines.

“I came across it when I was on my bike once” I glanced at him, he looked slightly embarrassed. “I thought you might like it”

“Why would you be looking so hard for a place I might like? This is not a date”

“I know” he murmured “Let’s just go inside” he sighed pulling the glass door open.

Did I say something wrong?

I followed him inside, the café was just as cute as the inside than it was on the outside. The floor was rugged with mismatched sofas and chairs. It wasn’t huge and the place was dimly lit.

It was beautiful.

“Hi, Welcome to The Corner my name is Claire” We were greeted by a tall blonde girl who seemed overly enthusiastic by Matt’s presence.

“Table for one?” she smiled a little too sweetly batting her eye lashes.

“Er no table for two” he gestured at me with his eyes. The waitress gave me a cold stare

“Problem?” I asked

“No of course not” she grabbed two menus off her podium “This way please”

We followed Claire to a corner of the café, she placed us at a small high circle table by the window, with a single lit candle in the middle.

“I’ll be back in a couple of minutes to take your orders” she said to Matt and only Matt

“Thanks” he replied with a polite smile as he took the menus off her and handed one to me.

I looked through the menu but didn’t actually read it, I kinda missed Claire now- the situation was a whole less awkward.

I quickly sneaked a peak at Matt his head was on the table resting on his arms, staring.

Staring at me.

I tried to look away but I couldn’t, he moved his bangs out of his face, his eyes pierced mine. My breathing became slightly laboured and my face hot.

“D-Do you know what you want?” I asked ripping my eyes off his face and back on the menu

“I think so” he murmured.

A part of me had a feeling that he wasn’t talking about something off the menu.

“Hey are you guys ready to order?” We were interrupted by Claire, she placed a hand on Matt’s shoulder.

“I’ll have whatever she’s having” Matt’s replied his eyes heavily on me.

And not Claire.

Me.

An overwhelming feeling of that fact built within me, but I didn’t know why.

“Erm” I hesitated burying myself in the menu again “I’ll just have a hot chocolate”

“Do you want whip cream, sprinkles and cherries with that?” Claire asked monotonously as she jotted my order down.

I looked at the menu again “No thanks” I smiled politely

“You like whip cream. Sprinkles and cherries” Matt stated

“I know” I shrugged.

But it was 7 dollars extra.

Can someone say rip off

“Most people don’t like to get extras because of the extra pay” Claire smiled

“I see” Matt smiled at me “She will have it”

“Okay” Claire giggled scribbling it down.

“Can she also have a blueberry muffin?"

"She sure can" the waitress smiled “so thats two hot chocolates with extras and two blueberry muffins"

"Yeah" Matt nodded handing back the menus.

“I'll be back with you shortly”

My eyes followed Claire as she walked behind the counter with our orders, her and another worker began giggling and jumping around, obviously about Matt. I cringed it really was-

“I guess I should explain myself right?” Matt half chuckled interrupting my thoughts.

I said nothing, instead stared at him expectedly.

“Uh” he rubbed the back of his head “Where to start?”

“The beginning has always been a good place”

“Yeah...” Matt sighed looking at his hands. “I'm sorry Rosalie” he slowly looked up at me

“Sorry for what?” I retorted quickly

he shook his head slowly “Everything”

We sat in silence for a while, staring at each other, was I to be sorry for anything?

“You have always, Rose, always been there for me- since we were kids.” He sighed smiling a little “I was a temperamental kid and you stuck by me and I guess it got to a certain point where I couldn't lose you, you were my little sister and I all wanted was to protect you from guys like me- I was a player and I hurt girls I knew it, I never pretended and I never wanted that for you, I guess I went about it the wrong way, a way that worked for me and not for you. I'm sorry”

“Oh” was all about I could muster.

“Your orders!” Claire's whiny voice made us both jump.

She placed to white mugs on the table topped with whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and a cherry on top. Then she placed two giant muffins down.

“Thanks” Matt mumbled

“No problem” she beamed “I'll be back later on with the bill”

She left us leaving another wave of awkward silence.

We both took a sip of drinks, looking everywhere but each other.

“I always knew why you stopped boys coming towards me Matt, what I really want to know is what went wrong with the whole Britney thing”

“I was going to get to that” Matt swallowed hesitating to look at me.

I exhaled slowly.

We were finally having this talk.

“As I said before, you were like my little sister and well-” he breathed out laughing shakily. “Things were happening Rosalie. Things I didn't understand.”

He ran his hand quickly through his hair

“Things I didn’t want happening”

He placed firm hands on my own.

“I was scared”

“What do you mean?” My voice came out in a small whisper

He licked his bottom lip his grip on my hands grew tighter.

“I had a theory that I was beginning to feel differently about you-”

“When?” I quickly cut in

“I guess around the time you got with Bitch Blake”

“You're still not allowed to call him that”

“Fine” he chuckled, keeping his eyes off me “My feelings from there began to...manifest”

“Manifest?” I asked genuinely confused

“Yeah” he whispered “They were growing strong for you in a way that wouldn't benefit anyone”

“Oh” I replied lost for words again.

He nodded “it wouldn't stop though, at the car wash was the first time, I felt something had to be done. I didn't mean to punch Bit- er Blake something just came over me”

“Your feelings?”

“Yeah”

he sighed, I couldn't even begin to imagine how painful this was for him. This was something Matt didn't do, he never talked about his feelings. Ever.

“It got worse and worse. Terrible when I went on the Harvard trip. Rosalie I missed you so much it was unnatural” he shook his head sadly “I couldn't speak to you I knew it would get worse”

He groaned and placed his head on the table “I told Britney I loved her that day and it felt so wrong- but I needed something to focus my mind away from a truth that was becoming more and more obvious”

I gazed down at his hands gripping onto my own, it hurt but I didn't mind.

“S-So the party-”

“It was official” he cut in “I knew it, I knew what I was feeling towards you- The jealousy, the possessiveness I had to have over you- God I'd never knew anything like it before. Funny I realised this when you were beating the hell out of my pregnant girlfriend”

“But you took her side” I mumbled

“I knew she probably wound you up in some way, but I was always going to take her side”

“To hide the truth”

“Exactly” he chuckled “And besides, it would look really bad if I didn't help her don't you think?

I cracked my first smile

“I resorted to not talking to you and I used the fight as an excuse but nothing worked all you did was plague my mind and really all I was doing was hurting the both of us. So I've stopped running...”

I exhaled, I knew where this was going now. My eyes casted downwards.

 “...And I'm facing it”

Instead of gripping my hands he quickly fiddled with them so our fingers were interlinked. I couldn't control my heavy breathing or the way my heart thumped so hard.

“Rosalie I-”

Was this it?

“Wait look at me” I slowly did what he said.

I noticed the table shaking a little bit, Matt was tapping his foot against the floor rapidly.

“Rose...Rosie” licking his lips, I'm sure he was trying to control himself “I can't do this” he mumbled looking away. I looked away also, feeling so embarrassed, I literally wanted to run a-

“I love you” he whispered “So very much”

Our eyes met at instant, both of us wide-eyed.

And then I knew at that moment how I felt too.

It was always there but it was so real now.

“I love you too” I whispered back

He didn't say anything in return but he didn't have to; his face said it all

“Sorry! The Bill” Claire shrieked interrupting our quiet moment she placed it on the table and then quickly ran off.

“We should get out of here” Matt slowly un-weaving our hands

“Yeah” I smiled “We didn't even touch our food”

“I'm not that hungry”

“Same here” I picked up the bill “This place is just way to expensive”

$35 for two hot chocolates and two muffins

Claire came back, waiting to take the bill but we both knew why she was really hanging about.

“I don't have my wallet” I looked up from the bill at Matt who was giving me his normal cool stare.

“You didn't even check”

“I knew from when I left your house”

“What...but you still decided to come here...and order?” I gave him my most baffled look

I could tell he was trying not to laugh

I slammed the table “So why the hell were you ordering extras Matt”

He propped his elbow on the table and rested his head against it smiling “I never said I was going to pay babe”

“When you start ordering extras and giant muffins, you're kinda asking for it”

“Rosalie” he looked at Claire “She's waiting”

I growled taking out my purse and slamming the notes on the table. Claire quickly grabbed the cash and ran off again.

“You are such a fucking jerk”

We stared intently at each other but it wasn't long before we both burst out into a fit of laughter, a sense of normality washed over us as if nothing happened in the first place

He stood up and walked over to me I turned around in my seat to face him, he stopped once he was in-between my legs.

His face soon turned serious he placed both of my hands on his face, closing his eyes as he did so “I know now...that I can still be me and I wouldn't have to change myself.” he smiled eyes still closed

He dipped his hand into his back pocket and brought out his wallet, giving me my money back. I snatched it off him and stuffed it in my pocket causing him to chuckle

“There will definitely be some changes Matt”

“We''ll find a middle” he replied, his normal sloppy grin back again.

I nodded.

“Can I please kiss you now?”

We had confessed our feelings to each other, this would make whatever this is official. I stared at his brown eyes and found a sincerity I had never seen before. I could ask for more time- he did hurt me and put me through so much hell. Could I be in a relationship with him?

I'm not sure at what point I put my head down but he lifted up my chin with his fingers and as if he read my mind he told me what I needed to hear “Rosalie, I can't say I won't let you down and I can't promise that I won't hurt you. But believe me when I say I love you and I want to prove to you that I can be a guy you would want to be with. I'm a jerk I know but I will try my very hardest to keep it to the barest minimum.

Will you give me a chance?”

I didn't hesitate any more.

“I will” I placed my hands again on either side of his face “You can kiss me now”

And he did so with urgency.

This kiss felt different than the other times. It wasn't a playful one or a cheeky one. It was one that screamed all different kinds of emotions. My hands found the back of his head and his tongue in my mouth. Grudgingly we pulled away but not before he pecked my lips one more time.

“Let's get out of here” he whispered

Grabbing my hand he pulled me out of the café, with all the waitresses watching with bitter hatred.

I laughed at the pettiness. If only they knew the kind of man Matt was.

“What?” He smiled looking back at me

“Nothing” I smiled harder “Nothing”

Who would have thought this?

The last kid I would have ever thought of getting with.

My best friend.

Now, my boyfriend.
