1 | In the Present

I just slightly edited this to make it more clear, and it is now dedicated to Nimbuscus for telling me about how it was unclear to her :) If you guys have a question, I love it if you guys ask me about it! :D

Kaillie Adams: (not edited)

For four months, I've been in a happy relationship with Zach. Carter even seems to like him, or at least enough to be civil. Life is good. All seems pretty well in the world, or at least mine. There's always school stresses, but those are only temporary, after all.

As I walk into school and out of the fall air, Zach immediately finds me and slings his arm around my shoulder in one smooth motion, managing to kiss my cheek softly and somehow still surprise me.

"Good morning beautiful," he whispers, so only I can hear. He sent me a text that had said the same thing this morning. He's so sweet, and so good to me.

"Morning," I say, blushing slightly. "Maybe you need to come up with some different nicknames for me, eh?" I'm still not quite used to Zach's whole thing of as-soon-as-I-see-my-girlfriend-I-compliment-her-to-the-extreme-to-make-her-blush-cause-it's-cute. His words, not mine. He makes me blush every day. Sometimes I'm still undecided as to whether I like all my classmates seeing me walk in with almost immediate flushed cheeks. But oh well, right?

"Maybe I should, We'll see," he says, a hint of a smirk in his voice. "So do you wanna go see a movie tonight?" He whispers in my ear again, as we walk slowly down the hallway, his arm still around me.

"Depends on what movie," I whisper back to him, turning my face to meet his green eyes. When we whisper like this, it makes me feel like we're the only two people in the hallway, or in the world even. It's probably naive to say that, but it makes me feel like we're in our own little bubble compared to the rest of the world.

"You could always choose," he whispers back.

"Even the new Nicholas Sparks one?" I say softly, smiling mischievously. He hates those kind of movies generally, but hey, if it's my choice, why not try?

"If you must..." he trails off, obviously not extremely pleased, but saying that he'd suffer through it for me. How nice of him.

"Alright, yay!" I say, as we stop at my locker, Zach taking his arm off from around my shoulders and is now standing beside me instead, just watching as I get what I need from my locker. As he stands beside me, I notice a couple of his football teammates coming toward us from around the corner of the hallway.

Leaning closer to me, he says, "I'm gonna go see them, okay? They're probably gonna come here in a minute if I don't go now."

"Alright," I say, turning from my locker to face him, "Catch you at lunch?"

"Of course babe," he says kissing me briefly on the lips before turning around and leaving towards the guys. When he kisses me, I heard his buds yelling at us to get a room or something like that. Most of the football players are single and players, so it was a pleasant surprise to know that Zach isn't like them, that he isn't a player. Especially since he's like their leader, with him being the quarterback and all. It's nice to know they're not all the same.

After he leaves, I get my school things into my backpack and undo my sweater, as it is mid-October and I live in Southern Ontario. As I shut my locker and go to walk to class, someone locks their arm in between mine. Looking up, I see Abby standing beside me, holding my arm with hers. Her long, straight dark brown hair and light, grey eyes look at me, all lit up with excitement as we start walking down the hall.

"Hey Kai! How was your weekend?" She says excitedly; but this is usual. Although she text all the time, she still asks me how my day, night or weekend was. She's been asking me this since grade school, when we meet, since before we both had Facebook and phones that can text. We used to play with phones that didn't work as kids, pretending to be teenagers. We thought it was so cool back then. Now that we actually are teenagers, it doesn't really seem as cool as all the movies portray. But hey, that's life, right?

"Hey Abs!" I say with a smile, glad to see her. "My weekend was great, how was yours?"

"Mine was great too; I went up to my cousin's house. What did you do?" You know, considering we constantly text, it's kinda funny that she still gets excited when she asks me this. Although, because of this, I usually leave something out so that she has something to get excited over.

"Well, all the usual stuff. I hung out with Carter, and just did other fun things like that," my smile is soft as I think of the events of this weekend. One word to describe them would definitely be peaceful.

"How is he, it almost seems like I haven't seen him in a while!" Abby says jokingly. Yup, because since Friday is such a long time.

Seconds later, Carter surprises us, putting his arms around both our shoulders and humorously asking "Did Abby just say she missed me?" with a mock gasp. His dark-haired head pops up between both of ours from behind, a couple of the dark strands almost in his eyes from his sneak attack.

"Of course Carter, I always miss your wonderful presence in my life," Abby says, laughing at his comment, as he moves into step beside me, since Abby and I are linked together. It's a running inside joke between the three of us, since when I introduced Carter and Abby when we were children, Abby didn't like Carter at all. And I don't mean a small dislike, I mean, she hated him at the time! I forget the details now, but I think there was some incident involving ice cream cake and Abby's dress though. Most people can guess the rest. I forced Abby to talk to him, so it's so funny to see them now, talking like best friends but still teasing each other. "And how was your weekend, Carter? I already heard how Kaillie's was."

"Dang, did I miss that! I'm so sorry Kaillie, I really am. But the boys wanted to talk shop," he says jokingly with fake sincerity. By shop, he means motorcycles. Carter is the school bad boy after all; he wears leather jackets, goes to parties, drives a motorcycle for a lot of the year and occasionally flirts with girls, which is something I don't really care to know about. If he's not driving his motorcycle, he's driving his car, which he fixed up with help from the internet. He's pretty into cars, after all.

"Seriously, I actually want to know how your weekend was," says Abby, with a completely serious expression. To anyone walking by us, she is dead serious. But she's not really, it is part of our inside jokes, it happened when they first became friends, and he still does it occasionally, just to annoy her sometimes, it can be quite funny.

"Well seriously, it wasn't very interesting, Abby. I slept in, worked on cars, hung out with this chick-" he says, pointing to me-"and may have flirted with some other chicks," he winks at us and smirks.

"We really did not need to know that," Abby and I say simultaneously. Seriously, we didn't want to know that last part.

"You asked, and I answered, Abigail," he states with a teasing look in his eyes. The friendship between Abby and Carter is very much a teasing one. Then again, it does keep things very interesting sometimes.

We both groan. He knows that we didn't want to know that, but thought he'd be oh so polite and tell us anyway. We have a great best friend, totally. Insert my sarcasm here.

Zach did meet us for lunch, and lately, my tight-knit group of friends had been combined with Zach's popular group of friends. But at seven o'clock, Zach came to my door to pick me up for the movie. Yes, I was utterly serious when said I wanted to go see the new Nicolas Sparks movie. I would never lie about this sort of thing. This is what happens when Zach gives me movie choice, because he doesn't usually give me the power of choosing for the sheer reason that he knows what will probably be the outcome. A chick flick, even though that's not that I watch. It really depends what is on in the theatres too though.

When he sees me he says, "Kaillie, you look especially beautiful tonight," and he bows, trying to impersonate an old-school gentleman. It makes me laugh. I chose to wear a simple pair of red skinny jeans, a white t-shirt and a blue jean jacket with red ballet flats. Nothing too fancy, it's just the movies with Zach; we're not going to a fancy dinner or something.

"Thanks Zach, you look very handsome," I say with a humorous smile on my face.

"Thank you, I like to think that I always look handsome," he says smugly, his ego taking over as he pretends to smooth his hair, making me laugh for the second time tonight. "Well we should probably get going, eh?"

"Oh, probably! I don't want to miss the movie!" I say excitedly, grabbing his hand and skipping as we walk to his car. He opens the passenger door for me, making me blush, just like he did earlier.

When we get there, we walk in the building hand in hand, and I make him get me Swedish berries with our popcorn and drinks, they're one of my favourite snacks. Walking into theatre, I hear Zach quietly grumble "Damn chick flick..." as I giggle under my breath.

~*~*~

After the movie, we walk back to Zach's car and he drives us to the park. The movie ended earlier then we though it would, so I suggested a walk in the park would be nice. Zach isn't really the nature type, but today he agreed. Guess it is because the weather outside tonight is really nice. It's a little cold, but still sweater weather, the sky is clear, and it's full of stars. It's almost like the song "A Sky Full Of Stars" by Coldplay should start playing. The sky is quite beautiful. It reminds me of when I used to have sleepovers in a tent in my backyard with Abby and my other close girl friends, and occasionally Carter too. Maybe he's such a ladies' man because he's been around us girls so long he knows exactly what to say to make girls happy?

I'm so lost in the beauty of nature and my thoughts that I barely realize I've stopped talking to Zach entirely. He stops us walking, using his grasp of my hand to turn me to a stop and towards him. "Is everything alright?"

"Of course," I say smiling, looking into his green eyes that seem to be glinting in the moonlight. "What could ever be wrong? Everything is perfect. I'm just thinking, remembering, and looking around. You know?"

"That's good, I never want things to be not alright," Zach says, teasingly, with a mischievous look in his eyes. Then he places his free hand on my cheek, and kisses me. I instantly close my eyes, kissing him back. His lips are soft, yet cold from the outdoor temperature. It's easy to get lost in his kisses; they're just that good that there is no need to say anything else.

"Because I'm happy/Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof/Because I'm happy/Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth/Because I'm happy/Clap along if you know what happiness is to you/Because I'm happy/Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do" ~Happy, Pharrell Williams
