Tomorrow's Promise
The first thing I noticed was the intense feeling of anticipation. There were nerves, sure but the anticipation was so much stronger. I'd watched Grant race numerous times, but the energy was never so high. Everyone was on the edge of their seat.
Grant had never had such a close match before. I couldn't remember the name of his main competitor, but I knew that he was good. Apparently, he was an underdog for the first few years of his career but had recently had a bunch of breakout races. Grant crushed his competition from the moment he started racing. He was almost always the projected winner. The fact that he was extremely attractive certainly helped his fan base as well. This year was different, this year Grant had the possibility of losing. However, my faith in Grant was unwavering. I had nothing but high hopes.
I sat down with my pop, comfortable in Grant's racing jersey. It looked more like a dress than a jersey on me, but I wore black legging under it regardless. I love how tall Grant is.
Vanessa shielded her eyes with one hand and pointed with the other. "Is that the guy everyone's talking about? Is that red one his car?"
"It's the green car." Alec's voice drifted from beside Vanessa.
"What?!" I could barely hear over the screams and revved up engines.
Vanessa leaned closer. "The green car is the one after Grant."
"I want to slash his tires."
Alec laughed. "Dating Grant has made you violent."
"Watch out, I'm coming for you next smart mouth." I glared at Alec.
Vanessa threw a large handful of popcorn in her mouth. "Oooh, it's about to start. Why am I nervous? I'm not racing."
"Sympathy pains." I responded, watching Grant's car. "I'll kill him if he gets hurt."
"You say that every year Zeph." Vanessa giggled.
"And every year I mean it."
I watched Grant climb into his racecar. He was wearing the uniform I got him for his birthday. I was so happy I got it for him, it looked great.
I smiled at the picture of me he painted on the side of his car. He told me I was his new logo.
The gun went off, signaling the start of the race.
When I saw Grant zooming by, I couldn't control myself. I was screaming his name at the top of my lungs, as well as the word "maneuver" for some reason. I guess the few hours I spent driving Grant's car made me an expert on racing in my mind. Vanessa and Alec probably said some things too, but I was oblivious to it all. I had never been so invested before.
The most nail-biting part of the race was the last lap. Grant had a clear lead, until Mr. Green Car snuck up from behind, taking the lead for a short while. They were neck and neck until the finish line. Grant beat him by a millisecond. When the race was over, my whole body was shaking with energy.
A bunch of reporters ran up to Grant, attempting to ask him fifty questions, but Grant ignored them. He looked into the crowd until he saw me. He moved towards me. I ran up to him as fast as I could. He lifted me up into his arms, and I wrapped my legs around him. He kissed me and everything around me disappeared. It's a strange thing to know that you are surrounded by people and noise, but not see or hear it.
"You were amazing!" I beamed. "I'm so proud of you."
He smiled. "Thank you. It's so much better when you're here."
Grant gently put me down and pulled me into a hug.
"Great job man!" Aiden came up behind us.
Grant looked over at him and smiled. "Thanks for coming."
Vanessa and Alec were shortly behind Aiden.
"Oh my gosh Grant, I almost peed my pants! That was insane!" Vanessa shook her head.
Alec put his hands on her shoulders. "I knew you'd pull through; you always do."
"Thanks. It was a close one, next time I might not be so lucky." Grant smirked.
I hit him gently. "Shut up, it's hard work not luck."
Grant laughed. "Your faith in me is amazing."
Aiden faced Grant. "Hey, let's take you out for a few celebratory drinks and dinner."
"Yeah." Alec chimed in.
"That'd be awesome. I appreciate it guys." Grant smiled at them.
Alec wrapped his arms around Vanessa. "Anything for our winner."
"I'll text you when I get back." Grant spoke as he pulled me into another hug.
"Will do." Aiden said.
The three of them walked away, talking excitedly.
"Wow Grant. I never thought I'd see you so attached to someone." A deep voice came from behind us.
I released Grant.
Grant chuckled. "Yeah, she's pretty special."
He spoke without turning around.
Curiosity got the best of me and I turned to see who Grant was talking to. Who I saw was a gorgeous man with bright green eyes, dark brown curly hair and tanned skin in a green racing uniform. Grant was the most attractive guy on the planet, but this guy was for sure model material.
Grant smiled. "Grayson this is Rinnie. Rinnie, Grayson."
Grayson took my hand and shook it. "It's nice to finally meet you. Grant's told me a lot about you."
"Likewise, Grayson." I smiled, although he hadn't told me anything about Grayson before.
Grayson smirked. "Next time, I won't let you off so easy Grant. Enjoy first place while you can."
Grant laughed. "Yeah, when'd you get so good?"
I realized Grayson must've been Mr. Green Car.
"Hasn't anyone ever told you not to sweet talk the competition?" Grayson shook his head.
Grant rolled his eyes. "I was just trying to make you feel better after your devastating loss."
"You say loss, I say learning experience." Grayson chuckled.
"Mhmm, spoken like a true loser." Grant joked.
Grayson rolled his eyes. "You just keep in mind there's more races to come."
"So, how long are you staying?" Grant spoke, finally being serious.
He shrugged. "A couple weeks, New York sucks this time of year."
"We'll for sure have to catch up some more."
I kept looking back and forth between the two. It seemed like they were joking, but I couldn't tell.
My fears were alleviated when Grant went over and man-hugged Grayson. "Good race man."
"You too."
They were both smiling.
"Well, I better go. We've got to face this paparazzi sometime." Grayson laughed.
Grayson walked back towards his car, not at all looking like someone who just lost by a millisecond.
"Was that the breakout guy?" I asked, still a little confused.
Grant nodded. "Yep, we hung out all the time before I moved here. We still keep in touch."
"He seems nice. You guys definitely have the same sense of humor."
Grant looked over at the green car almost nervously. "Oh yeah, we agree on a lot of stuff, but we're also very different."
"Maybe we could all hang out before he leaves. I'd love to hear Grant stories from before I met you." I put my hand on his arm.
Grant seemed to be pretty close with this Grayson guy, so I wanted to get to know him. I figured it'd give me more of an insight on Grant's past. As much as I felt like I knew Grant, I couldn't possibly know everything about him. Grayson seemed harmless enough to me.
"Yeah, maybe." Grant pulled me tightly against him. "Want to come help me with interviews? I think it's about time I get to brag about you to the world."
I kissed him. "I'd love that."
He took my hand and led me to the countless pushy people holding microphones. Despite popular opinion, it was actually a lot of fun. Probably because Grant was there. He answered every question with humor and brutal honesty.
..............................................................................................................................................................
Grant threw himself back on bed. "What a day."
"You can say that again." I joined him.
Grant sat up and looked at me. "I'm so obsessed with you."
My heart pitter pattered at his words. "I'm so obsessed with you."
He didn't speak, he just reached over and kissed me with more intensity than I thought was humanly possible.
The ringing of my cell phone interrupted us. I kissed him one more time. "I should get that."
Grant pulled me back in for another kiss. "Yeah."
He released me slowly.
I smiled and kissed him again. "Okay."
I grabbed my cellphone, before I ended up kissing Grant for hours. "Hello?"
"Yes, this is her?" My nerves soared.
Grant watched me, curious.
When I hung up the phone, I didn't know how to feel.
"Everything okay?" Grant raised an eyebrow.
I took a deep breath. "I have to tell you something."
He inched closer to me. "You're kind of scaring me Rinnie."
"No, no it's nothing to be scared about." I met his gaze. "Do you remember how I went to that audition last week? The one for that Soap Opera?"
Grant's eyes grew wide. "No way Rinnie, you got the part didn't you?"
I nodded.
He lifted me off the bed and spun me around. "Rinnie, that's amazing! I knew you'd get it!"
I laughed. "Thank you for believing in me."
When Grant finally put me down, I spoke again. "There's more."
"More? What, are you also producing it?" He smirked.
"Shooting is in LA."
The light that was in Grant's eyes dimmed. "When do you have to leave?"
"Tomorrow morning." I felt sick as I spoke. "I'll just tell them I'm not interested. I'm sure they can replace me easily."
Grant placed his hand gently on my face. "It's your dream Rinnie, I won't let you give up your dream for me. I want you to go. I know better than anyone that you are irreplaceable."
"Grant, I..." I began, water forming in the corners of my eyes.
He placed a finger to my lips. "Shh...it's okay."
"Do you think we can make it?" My voice shook.
Grant moved the hair away from my neck and kissed it, sending shivers up my spine. "If we're meant to." He whispered. "Which I think we are."
I went to speak, but before I could he kissed my lips. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down to me.
"I'm going to miss you so much." I said softly in his ear.
He leaned back, staring into my eyes. "Rinnie."
"Yeah?" I kept my arms around his neck.
"Promise I won't lose you?"
