The Feeling of Flying

I woke up feeling great. It was one of those days where you just wake up in a great mood for no good reason. I like to think those mornings are predictors of the day ahead.

My phone rang, startling me out of my thoughts.

"Hey V, what's up?" I asked.

Vanessa and I were in a good place, we spent most of the night out on the balcony just reminiscing. She told me she was sorry she dissed Grant. Watching us together made her loose her doubts. I was very grateful to hear her say that.

She sounded way too awake for six in the morning. "What are you doing today? I'd really like to hang out. We haven't hung out in ages."

"I'd love that." I smiled. I missed her.

Vanessa responded immediately. "Okay, great! I'll pick you up at 10."

The phone cut off.

I texted Grant and let him know I was going to be with Vanessa.

I yawned as I grabbed a towel and headed into the bathroom to get ready.

As I opened the door an amazing aroma overwhelmed my senses. My eyes enlarged. Candles and rose petals covered the bathroom. Candles were lit around the room. The bath was filled with bubbly water. There were also chocolate chip pancakes with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. As well as a steaming cup of hot chocolate. I leaned against the door, in shock. On the counter was a note written in red ink.

The note said:

"I'm sorry, you just missed me. I'd hate to think of you waking up without rose petals and candles. You're far too gorgeous to be in anything undecorated. Wish I was there, but I have to practice. Enjoy. -G

P.s. Check your closet. I couldn't resist."

I ran to my closet. Sure enough, there were two large boxes waiting for me. I pulled them out. In one was a beautiful ballroom gown. It was a stunning long pink gown with silver sequence. It was fitted at the top and flared out at the bottom with an extended slit up the left leg. It was short and fitted underneath. The second box was a pair of sparkly silver high heels that immediately drew your attention. I hugged the dress tightly to me.

I grabbed my phone and pressed one on speed dial.

"Hey Rinnie." Grant spoke into the phone.

"What is all this?" I said, smiling.

He laughed. "Just a little token of my appreciation."

"Thank you. This is literally the sweetest thing anyone's ever done for me."

His voice came through crystal clear. "That makes me sad. You should have stuff like this done for you all the time."

I held the phone tighter as if it were Grant. "You're amazing. How'd you do all this?"

"You were asleep, I just left like not even ten minutes ago. God, I hope that doesn't sound creepy." He chuckled.

Grant was not a morning person, so that fact that he got up before six just to surprise me melted my heart.

"Not at all."

"Rinnie, did you look closely at the rose petals?" He asked.

I stepped into the bathroom, confused. "Yeah, there beautiful..." Then I saw it. The rose petals spelled out "Will you go on a date with me?"

I dropped the phone then scrambled to pick it up. I could hear Grant saying "Rinnie" on the other side.

"No." I responded.

Grant choked. "No? I thought you wanted to..."

I started laughing. "I'm kidding. Yes Grant, I'd love to go on a date with you."

"That was cruel." He laughed. "We'll make plans soon. Right now though, your bath is getting cold."

I smiled. "So are the pancakes, and hot chocolate. How are you so sure I'm not in the bath right now anyways?"

Grant chuckled. "Oh, I didn't make those. I didn't make any pancakes or hot chocolate. I'm not sure, but now I'm imagining things I shouldn't be."

"You didn't make those? Grant, you swear?" I said a little concerned.

"Kidding Rinnie, how's it feel?" Grant joked.

I rolled my eyes. "I'm immersing myself into the bath now. What are you picturing that you shouldn't be?"

Grant was silent a moment. "Exactly what you said. A beautiful naked woman covered in bubbles."

"I see." I smiled. "Goodbye Grant, thank you so much for this morning. Oh, I forgot to mention I'm hanging out with Vanessa today, so I probably won't be home until late."

I could picture Grant smiling on the other end of the phone. "Okay. Have fun Rinnie."

"We saw Trisha at the bar yesterday. She was surprisingly nice." Vanessa spoke as she drove slowly down the road.

I laughed. "Yeah, she apologized to Grant and I and said she wanted to turn over a new leaf. It's weird but I kind of believe her."

Vanessa looked at me out of the corner of her eyes. "Well, it's about time! I was getting so sick of her. What made her realize she was terrible?"

"Liam. She's obsessed with him, but he isn't into bad girls."

"Oh my gosh, that makes sense. She kept smiling at Liam and trying to talk to him. He was pretty resistant until right before he left when he actually smiled back at her."

I smiled. "Liam's a great guy, let's hope it rubs off on her."

Vanessa nodded. "Yeah, it'd be so nice not to have to deal with her sleeping with all of our men."

"That is true." I chuckled. "Vanessa, I thought you said we were going to the mall."

I realized the route she was taking was not our typical route to the mall. I worried maybe she got distracted and missed a turn, which was not at all unlike her. I love her, but she had the attention span of a puppy. Not that mine was much better,  I was just as easily distracted.

"Don't you worry your pretty little head; we're going somewhere much better." She kept her eyes focused on the road.

I squinted at her. "Better than the mall? You love the mall."

She smiled. "You'll see."

"I'll see what?"

She sighed. "You ask a lot of questions."

"You don't answer a lot of questions."

"Here we are." She parked the car and jumped out.

I looked around confused at first, then excited. We were at the best racetrack in town.

I turned to her. "What's going on?

"You won the bet Rinnie." Grant smirked, leaning against the car.

I jumped out and ran over to him. I hugged him tightly. "What are you doing here? Better question, what are we doing here?" After I spoke it clicked. He was going to let me drive his racecar.

"Here, put this on." Grant handed me a box.

I stared at it blankly. "What's this?"

"Open it."

I opened it slowly. Inside was a beautiful pink and green racing uniform and shoes. The uniform had my name on it.

I looked up at Grant. "I don't know what to say. Thank you."

"No thanks necessary, seeing you in that body hugging little uniform is thanks enough for me." He smirked.

"Grant." I hit him playfully.

He smiled. "Go get changed now and fight me later. There's a bathroom right down there in that little red building."

I quickly changed into the uniform and braided my hair back. I could barely contain my excitement. It was always a dream of mine to drive a racecar. I wasn't really the type to do something so risky, but I wanted nothing more than to feel the sensation of driving a million miles an hour around smooth curves.

"Look at you." Grant's smiled at me. "You look fantastic."

I walked over and kissed him. Then, I hugged him tightly.

Grant chuckled. "What's that for?"

"Thank you."

He hugged me back. "Kissing me is the best way possible to thank me."

I smiled into him.

I stepped back, looking up at him. "So, which car am I driving."

"My favorite one." He took my hand and walked me over to the shiniest racecar I'd ever seen, and I'd been to a lot of Grant's races. It was black with words painted on it in dark blue.

My mouth gapped. "You're going to let me drive your favorite car?!"

He nodded. "Of course, my favorite car for my favorite person."

I could see my reflection through the shiny door.

"I don't want to wreck your best car. You have Nationals coming up." I thought Grant was insane for trusting me with his most prized possession.

He laughed. "You think I'd let you wreck Rinnie? Go ahead, try it out."

The leather seats felt amazing. I leaned back, placing my hands on the wheel.

I put the key in the ignition and turned it. The car roared to life.

"Okay, now slowly take your foot off the break, and put it gently on the gas." Grant said calmly.

I did as he said. We went flying down the track. The car began to swerve.

"Softer on the gas." Grant placed his hands carefully over mine, helping me maintain control of the zooming car.

"Sorry." I lifted my foot gently off the gas, effectively slowing us down.

"It's okay." Grant spoke softly. "There you go."

The only way I could think to describe how I felt in that moment is free. It was like I was flying high up in the clouds. It was blissful, exhilarating. I finally understood why Grant was so into racing.
