Taken Off-Guard

Grant shook his head. "Have you ever even kissed anyone?"

"Not unless my parents count." I tried to lighten the mood.

Grant smirked. "They don't."

I could tell he was anxious. Not many people understood how anxious a person Grant is. He was very good at appearing calm, cool, and collected. I knew him though, I saw right through it. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, it's just a lot Rinnie. You're asking me to be your first time and your first kiss too." He rubbed his hands on his pants. "Those things are a big deal."

"Grant, it's okay, really. I chose you because I know it'll be special." I took a deep breath. "You're my best friend."

Grant smiled at me. "Why would you want a best friend like me anyways?" He was changing the subject and trying to make me think he wasn't worth it at the same time.

"Grant." I complained.

He looked at me, contemplating. "Come here." I walked over to him.

"Yes." I said slowly.

He put his hands on my shoulder. "What you are suggesting here, it can't be undone. It's permanent. Like tattoo permanent. Well, I guess technically you can get those removed now, but you get my point."

I sighed. "I know this Grant. I do. I've thought about it. Is it sort of risky? Sure, yeah, it's risky, but sometimes in life you just have to take that risk. I mean, look at you, you...." Grant took my face in his hands and kissed me. My heart felt like it was going to burst right out of my chest. It was unlike anything I'd ever felt before. It was carefree and passionate. I knew from this moment on, things would never be exactly the same between us. It was an exciting feeling. The unknown exhilarated me. My whole life was safe, predictable. I never imagined myself in this position, here kissing Grant. I was happy to be here though.

Grant pulled away, smiling. "You were saying."

"That was unexpected." I smiled back. "Did I do okay?"

Grant chuckled. "Yeah, but we better try again just to make sure it sticks." He was flirting with me. It should've scared me, but it didn't. It felt good to have him look at me in a new light. In this moment I was more than someone he worried about. I was someone he wanted. Whether or not this was the way he actually felt, it was how he made me feel like he felt and that was all that mattered. He kissed me again, longer this time. His hands held onto my waist.

This time I pulled back. "Was that better?"

"It was good the first time." He looked at me, amused. "Are you sure you've never kissed anyone before?"

I crossed my arms. "You're just saying that to be nice."

"I'm not nice Rinnie, you know that." He leaned against his bed post.

I rolled my eyes. "I most certainly do not."

"Hey! I have a reputation to maintain here."

"Right, right." I shook my head. "I forgot all about your fake persona."

"Hey!" He pointed at me. "Stop that."

I feigned innocence. "Stop what?"

"Pretending there's good in me."

"There is." I stood my ground.

"You drive me crazy, you know that?" He tilted his head.

I stepped closer to him. "I do?"

He nodded. "Yeah, you always call me out." He took a deep breath.  "Those eyes aren't exactly fair either."

"Awe, see you can be sweet." I blushed.

"No." Grant shakes his head and grips my waist, pulling me into him.

"Why don't you let anyone see the real you?" I ask, placing my hand on his face.

"I let you see the real me don't I? That's pretty much everyone who needs to."

"Yeah?" His words made me speechless.

"Yeah." He leaned down to kiss me.

"Wait." I stopped him. He watched me, taken off guard. "I want to try." I reached  up and pulled him down to me. I kissed him lightly at first, then with more passion. I moved back nervously.

He stared at me through wide eyes. "Yeah, I'd say you've definitely got the hang of that."

I laughed. "So, where are we going to..." I asked, looking up at him.

"What's wrong with right here?" He gestured towards the bed.

I looked at it. "Nothing." I couldn't believe this was really happening. All from one drunken night of truth or dare. We stared into each other's eyes, inches apart. His phone beeped loudly, cutting the tension.

"Sorry, I forgot I was texting Alec." He checked his phone.

"It's cool." I watched as he started texting. "Everything okay?" Grant, Aiden, Alec, Vanessa and I always texted in a group chat. We rarely texted outside of it.

He looked up. "Yeah, he just texted me now saying he's coming over."

I tried to hide my hurt. "Oh, when's he coming?"

He checked his phone. "Couple minutes."

"Just him?" I wanted to be alone with Grant. The way he was acting though, it didn't seem like he felt the same. I knew before we kissed that it wasn't supposed to be anything serious. Grant didn't do anything wrong. I was just disappointed.

"I think the whole crew's coming." He put his phone in his pocket. "What's wrong?"

I faked my best smile. "Nothing, just tired. I didn't sleep that great with that weird dream." I wasn't completely lying. I did wake up a few times through the night. What I didn't say was that Grant had me wide awake from the moment he kissed me.

"Do you want to sleep?"

"I'll be okay, I should probably change though." I was still in his large black t-shirt. He waited for me while I changed back into my own clothes. I handed him his shirt on my way out.

"Okay, I'll give you a ride home." The car ride was silent. I was too deep in my head to make small talk. I just wanted to go home and clean up.

"Here you are." Grant said, putting the car in park outside my house.

"Thanks." I hugged him. "I'll stop by later and say hi to everyone."

"I could wait here and give you a ride back." He offered.

"It's okay, I'll probably be awhile. I'll take my car."

"Alright, let me know if you change your mind and I'll come get you." He switched into reverse and started backing out. I waved him goodbye. His car was the only fancy thing he owned. He was a professional racecar driver, so he was pretty passionate about cars. He usually drove his shiny red camaro, but he had 5 others in his car garage. Grant had lots of money, but hardly anyone knew it. He kept everything else of his simple.

I went into the bathroom and got into the shower. I couldn't help but remember Grant kissing me. The thrill of it. I wondered if we would ever kiss again. I got ready, changing into a pair of black jeans and a baby blue cardigan. I braided my hair and threw on some silver earrings and a necklace. I walked out the door, preparing myself to face Grant again.
