Playing Games
I took a sip of the wine cooler. "Alcohol and games? That usually spells trouble."
"Someone's scared." Grant teased me.
Trisha went to the couch and sat down. "Not me. Let's play."
"Now that's the can-do attitude I'm looking for." He said, joining her on the couch.
I knew that there was no way this could end well, but I also knew I was going to join. I would do anything that meant cutting this awkward tension. Trisha was driving me crazy already.
I sat as far away from the two of them as possible and crossed my legs. "What game did you have in mind?"
"I was thinking a little never have I ever?"
Trisha took a sip of her beer and inched closer to Grant. "Can I go first?"
He shrugged. "Go for it."
She pursed her lips in concentration. "Never have I ever went skipping dipping."
Grant shook his head. "I have not."
"Yes you have." She turned to face him. "Remember, we forgot our bathing suits."
He started laughing. "Oh yeah! That was crazy."
"I haven't." I said in a quiet voice. This game wasn't making things less awkward like I'd hoped.
Trisha smiled at me. "That's so cute." She patted Grant's chest. "She's so innocent."
I wanted to dump her beer on her condescending face.
"She's just not sleezy." Grant corrected her. I didn't have time to interpret that comment. It was almost a hit at Trisha.
He spoke up again. "Never have I ever tried to make an ex jealous."
I took another sip and squinted. "I think we're playing the game wrong. You're supposed to say something you haven't done."
Trisha looked at me, perplexed. "This is how I've always played it."
Well the way you've always played it is wrong. I wanted to say.
Grant sat back, thinking. "I think you might be right Rinnie."
Trisha turned to him. "Are you sure?"
I bit my tongue to keep the peace. "It's okay, let's just continue on this way." Even though it literally says never in the question.
Trisha grinned. "I have."
"I have." Grant added.
"I have... no exes." I answered, trying not to sound annoyed.
I wanted to ask Grant why I was even here. He knew I had no exes. I wasn't about to be their third wheel. If they wanted to exclude me, I would include myself.
"Never have I ever hooked up with someone to the Somo version of 'Crazy in Love'." It was my turn to smile as I responded. "I have."
At the same time, I texted Vanessa to call me as soon as she could, pretending to have an emergency to get me out of this.
Grant's eyes grew wide. He fidgeted with his hands a minute then answered. "I have."
I watched as Trisha's face hardened. "I have not."
Grant chugged his beer. "Never have I ever climbed off of a moving ferris wheel." He sat his beer down. "I have."
I smiled. "I have."
Trisha sat back, looking stunned. "I have not."
Trisha let the tension bubble a little before she spoke. "Never have I ever hooked up with Grant."
Grant nearly choked, then pretended to laugh. "I have not."
"I have." Trisha answered with confidence. Then they both stared at me.
"I ha..." My phone rang loudly, cutting me off. "Hello? Vanessa slow down. Okay, I'm on my way."
Grant moved over to me. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, it will be. I need to go to Vanessa's." I stood up. "It's been so fun getting to know you Trisha." Fun was the nicest way I could think to describe it.
Trisha nodded. "For sure. I'm sure we'll be seeing each other around."
"I'll walk you out." Grant said, grabbing my purse and opening the door for me.
"It's okay Grant but thank you." I wasn't sure I could handle alone time with him at the moment.
He kept my purse. "I don't mind, really. Let me walk you out."
I gave in. "Okay, thank you."
We walked out the door, leaving Trisha sitting on the couch.
Grant turned to me. "What was that?"
"Which part?"
Grant rolled his eyes. "The 'never have I ever hooked up with someone listening to Somo's version of Crazy in Love' part. That was oddly specific Rinnie."
I signed. "I'm sorry, I was trying to include myself."
Grant shrugged. "Well, mission completed I guess."
I stopped and turned to Grant. "I have a question for you."
"I probably did it." His words were half-joke, half-serious.
I met his eyes. "You told Liam not to ask me out."
Grant crossed his arms. "What about it?"
I restrained myself for the second time that night from hitting him. "Why? Why would you do that?"
He uncrossed his arms. "Look at him."
"Grant." I was growing impatient.
He threw his hands up in the air. "He may be athletic, but he's got the intellectual capacity of a squirrel. He's not smart enough for you."
I didn't know whether to feel flattered or angry. "Grant, that's not true. You don't know him." I collected myself and went on. "I'd like you to tell him that you aren't going to get in the way if we start dating."
Grant's eyes were shining. "Okay."
I met his eyes. . "Thank you."
He didn't say anything, just nodded.
"I want you to know that you and Trisha have my support."
"We do?" He asked softly.
"You do. I like seeing you happy." I fought back the tears in my eyes. This was harder than I thought it'd be and I had already thought it'd be really difficult.
"That means a lot." He took a step towards me, then stepped back and started moving again. We walked noiselessly to my car.
"I'll see you later okay?" I pulled him tightly into a hug.
"We hug a lot." He grinned.
I refused to let him move back. "Problem with that?" I didn't want to let go of him. I wanted to stand there in his arms all day. I knew as soon as I let go, he'd go back to Trisha.
Grant shook his head. "No, m'am."
"Good." I finally released him. "That purse looks good on you."
"Is that you're way of hinting you want it back?"
I reached my hands out. "The blue really brings out your eyes."
He laughed and handed me the purse. "Bye Rinnie."
"Bye." I got into the car and started it up. Grant stood back, directing me. He liked to make sure I didn't hit anything backing up. His driveway was a little dangerous to back out of.
I told Siri to call Vanessa.
"Tell me everything." Vanessa said, eagerly.
I chuckled. "I will, just let me grab a bagel and if you want we can meet up."
"Yes! Let's do that. Can you come here after?"
I felt honored to have a friend who cared so much about my boy drama. "I'd love to."
"Okay great! It's a bit of a mess, so I'm going to go and clean up." She began shuffling, then groaned. "What even is this?"
"I'll be there shortly." I yelled, positive that she now had me on speaker phone, which ironically always made it harder to hear. I heard the phone click, ending the call.
I tried to focus on the music. I was so glad the morning was over. I tried to tell myself I was judging Trisha too harshly, that I was just jealous. Deep down, I didn't think that was the full story. There was something off about her. You know how there are just some people who you don't like the instant you meet them, solely on their energy? Well, that's how I felt about her. Maybe it was because I was there, but it didn't even seem like Grant liked her that much. He wasn't really paying that much attention to her.
I pulled into the bagel shop. I grabbed my purse and headed in. The line was really long for some reason. I stood at the back of the line, stomach growling. I pulled out my phone to distract myself.
After a half hour with hardly any movement, I decided I'd get food somewhere else and started to leave the line. I had my phone out, dialing Vanessa's number. As I went to hit call, I hit into someone hard. I almost fell, but hands grasped me firmly, keeping me standing and off my butt.
"Are you okay?" A voice too deep to be female asked me.
I looked up slowly to see Liam staring back at me, full of concern.
