Stressed Out
"Yo Liam, pass me the receipt bin"
"Come get it yourself Kate, you've got legs for a reason. Use them"
"You're lucky I'm in a good mood right now. If I wasn't, you could kiss your face goodbye" I pick up the bin from Liam's register.
"Harsh" he barks "are you sure you're not in a bad mood"
"I'm warning you Liam Pierce" I shout over my cash out area "Don't test me"
"I wouldn't dare" he replies.
I straighten my red Macy's t-shirt and put on a flashy fake smile for costumers getting ready to buy some items. Liam and about seven other workers were put on cash out duty. Sadly.
"Hi, My name is Kate and I'll be serving you today" I say to an old lady who hands me a handful of clothes to scan.
"Do you have to wear such a bright t-shirt?" She says "You and your young generation will be the death of all of us"
"Excuse me!" I say with all the sassiness intended.
"You're excused"
"First of all, complain to the store for choosing a red shirt. Second of all I'm trying to help you, and you're being a rude old bat" I continue ranting on as I'm scanning "And third of all, you don't have to worry about our generation, you'll soon be dead anyways"
I hand her the bag of clothes.
Pulling my fake smile on, I say "Have a nice day"
The old bat snatches it out of my hand without saying thank you. Without me she wouldn't have been able to buy those clothes. If I haven't had taken this job then nobody would have been here to serve her. Okay I may be over exaggerating but she started it.
"Hey Kate, we're trying to make money" Liam's says to me "Not piss off costumers, got it?"
"Hmph" I wasn't the one who started it after all.
I smile half heartedly and return to scanning items. The next line of costumers were somewhat nice, most of them having unusual items. But, hey I don't judge.
I look over at Liam who is at the register opposite me. He's busy chatting away with a young boy and his mother, the boy probably about eight years old. I smile to myself when he ruffles the kids head while handing him a free lollipop. I return back to scanning the items still smiling, slightly blushing. I can tell he's going to be a good dad one day.
>>>>>>>>>>
"That was tiring" I sigh audibly "I hate those costumers"
Liam takes a seat next to me in the staff room "It wasn't that bad"
"That's because you're likeable, I'm not. I'm only likeable to people I want to be likeable to"
"You make it sound like hell" he laughs eyeing me consciously.
"Why would you say that" I form a sad face "Like you know how I feel, you know I'm not happy"
"Are you quoting Kim Kardashian?"
"Boo you whore"
This makes him laugh ever harder "Mean girls?"
I smile at the corner of my lips "Damn Daniel, back at it again..." I stare down at his feet, he wearing black converse so that doesn't work "What are those!"
Liam's eyebrows forrow a serious face, but he soon can't maintain that face and laughs out almost in tears. I guess I'm just that funny. I clutch my chest and breathe in and out, controlling my breathing and Liam copies me.
"Shall we leave?" He asks standing up.
I pick up my bag from the ground, and then stand up to answer "Yeah sure, let's go. Can we pick up Nash and Mason though, they would've probably finished training"
"Okay, cool" he nods nonchalantly "I don't know where they live though"
"That's okay, ever since Nash and I started dating he's always at my place. And I can direct you to Masons house" he nods at me and I smile back in return.
We walk out of the mall and into the car park. It was golden silence as we got into the car. Comfortable silence. I guess we were both tangled in our own thoughts. His car is very neat, it's a very cool Audi, I wanted one for my birthday but it made more sense to give me a hand me down.
When we're out of the malls dome, my favourite song comes out blaring on his radio.
"Wish we could turn back time to the good old days" I sing along, this is my jam "When the mama sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out, ohhhh"
I glance over at Liam who is focused on the road but clearly annoyed. His jaw clenched and his fists hard around the steering wheel. I sink back into my seat humming softly.
It's about 7pm, almost night. It's quite dark outside but there's a hint of daylight in the sky. Liam still kept his perplexed look on his face, very hard to decipher.
"What? Don't you like my singing?" I ask.
"Nah, I'm just thinking" He says, his eyes still glued to the road.
"About?"
"Stuff"
I push further "What stuff?"
"Grace" he looks distraught by the mention of this girls name. Somewhat pain visible in his grey eyes.
Who the hell is Grace, calm down Kate.
"Who's Grace?"
"She's my five year old sister who recently was diagnosed with Leukaemia" He raises an eyebrow and quickly glances at me but looks away quickly.
I feel a pang of guilt for thinking otherwise. I never knew he had a sister or that she has leukaemia. "I'm s-sorry" I manage to say "I didn't know"
"It's okay, it's tough you know?" He continues "It's hard knowing your sister could die any moment, that her life could be coming to an end; she did nothing to deserve that"
His eyes fixated on the road but they're clearing lost in thought, pain and sorry filling them up.
"I'm sorry" I say again.
He sighs "There's nothing you have to be sorry about, it is what it is" his face changes emotion all of a sudden, from being gloomy to laughing softly under his breath.
"Do you know what's funny?" He glances down at me for a second before looking back at the road.
I shake my head abruptly.
He laughs again "The song you were singing explains how I'm feeling"
"Stressed out?"
"Yeah"
"It's going to be okay" I assure him grabbing his free hand and holding onto it.
We both know I'm lying when I say it's going to be okay. Almost none of the leukaemia patients make it out alive, some may be lucky-but others aren't. I hope his sister is one of the lucky ones.
I hope.
Liam pulls up in the schools pick up zone where Mason and Nash were standing. The seemed to be in a staring competition of some sort. I knock on my window, waving to them to hop in. Mason spots me and they both enter the car putting their football bags at the boot of the car.
"Hey" Mason says shutting the door of the car.
"Hey Mas" I turn my head to Nash "Hey Nashy bear"
"Mmm" he says with disgust. He's not looking at me but he's looking down at something. I follow his gaze and they land at me and Liam's hand. We were still holding hands.
"Fuck" I say to myself. This isn't going to end well.
>>>>>>>>>
"Ugh, you don't have to be so jealous" I shout fuming into my house "We were just holding hands"
"Just holding hands my ass. He likes you, I can see it right through his eyes"
I walk into the kitchen and swing open the fridge. It was not long ago that we dropped Mason off and headed to my house. Nash was still being jealous about me and Liam holding hands. Like seriously get over it.
"What's your problem?" I ask closing the fridge after grabbing a Hershey bar "I held his hand, why are you getting so mad about that?"
He looks at me like I'm crazy; like I'm Supposed to know why he's angry. I stare back at him with confusion.
"I don't like another guy holding my girlfriends hand. He just had this look on his face...like he liked the way it felt"
I push past him and into the living room, placing myself gently on the couch.
"Can you hear how dumb the words you're saying sound" I ask him.
He takes a seat next to me with more anger in his face.
"I don't want you to talk to him"
"Are you kidding me Nash?" I shout "Just because we're dating doesn't mean that I can stop hanging out with all my other guy friends. You still talk to girls and I'm fine with it, I may be jealous most of the time but I'm fine with it. And I was holding his hand because he's going trough a hard time. He just found out his five year old sister had leukaemia. And you were being such a jerk to him and you don't even realise what's going on in his life" Ugh, I can't even.
A look of shame and guilt is smeared across his face. I guess he regrets making assumptions when he didn't know the story "Oh, I'm sorry" he mutters.
"I'm not going to forgive until you tell Liam that yourself tomorrow"
"Okay" he sighs in defeat.
I put my feet up on his lap and lay back on the couch. He looks at me and before he manages to look back I say "Just remember I love you and you only"
A half sorta smile forms on his face "Love you too"
I smile back at him and reach out for the remote. I turn on the TV and scroll through Netflix till I find The vampire diaries.
"Team Stefan or Damon?" I ask laughing slightly.
"Hell yes, team Damon" Nash laughs along.
"You want some?" I ask offering him my Hersey bar.
"Yes!" He grabs the whole thing and starts nibbling like a little child.
Goof.
Authors note:
Sup guys. How was your day?
As I explained, I don't have Internet at home (the struggle is real tho) and I write the chapters at home an publish them with my schools wifi.
To make thing clear, A Hersey bar is a chocolate bar, if you didn't know. And Macy's is an American store, kinda like target.
:)
I got inspired to do the Leukaemia (Leukaemia is a type of cancer) thing because at my school we have a tradition called 'The World's Greatest Shave' and this is where girls participate in cutting or shaving their hair off and donating it to the leukaemia foundation. My friend Lilian participated and she shaved her hair to support the cause and Lillian if you ever read this; YOU GO GIRL, I'm so proud of her. She shaved all her hair off, That's a lot of courage, Love ya babe<3.
Any who.....
