Backstory: Life about his family is unknown but he is "best friends" with Henrik growing up together. Both of them were put in a school/academy/(whatever they had in Khaeri'ah) but in different departments. This place was all for the plan to beat Celestia and the gods. Espen was put in the department to become a knight for Khaeri'ah. This is where he met America and fell in love but it wasn't long before his best friend met her as well and also fell in love and took her away. Espen though never knew Henrik's true intentions because Henrik wasn't always so...different. Before Henrik was innocent and kind but things changed after being in his own department. When they first joined Henrik was a bit distant from Espen but when they did meet again Espen noticed how Henrik was starting to act strange but brushed it off but as time went Henrik only grew more and more strange. Espen soon found out about what America has been going through since her time at this place/academy has been rough and decided things needed to change. So he went to Henrik and told him about what's been going on and Henrik was furious and suggested that they both go and "deal" with these bad people. Espen was hesitant at first but it was when Espen saw these bad guys do something worse to America that he knew things needed to change. That was the day that Espen and Henrik "dealt" with the bad guys and left them to rot. From that day Espen never told America about what he did in fear and regret that America wouldn't like him anymore. It was also from that day that Espen found out what Henrik has been doing for some time now, "dealing" with even more people than just the small group of bad guys. Henrik and America would soon become a couple but Espen disapproved of it since he knew how Henrik was, crazy, unhinged, a literal murderer. But Espen knew that if he told America she would also find out about what Espen did...so he kept it to himself. It all continued on like that but Espen did still try to inch closer to America to get her away from Henrik but it never worked and it went on until the worst. On the day Henrik and America fought that led to Henrik's death, America finally went towards Espen's way. He was glad things changed so he would have her but...he hated himself that he let it happen. Regardless of that he still comforted her and slowly America came to fall in love with him. Life continued happily and to the point where Espen even asked America to marry him and it was all going well, months before the wedding...the cataclysm happened. America and Espen were running to find America's family. While they ran Barbatos doing his own destruction saw the pair and used his anemo arrows and knocked a building over. It was in this moment Espen's life came flashing before his eyes...a life that showed how much he loved America. So in the last few seconds he pushed America out of the way for only him to be crushed...he died that day and was thought to never be seen again... But with the Khaeri'ahns reviving he also came to live again as a abyss mage but is able to switch into his human body at times. He was a late bloomer to revive so by the time he came to be America had already been thrown to the deep parts of the abyss by the travelers twin and "die"...at least that's what everyone in the abyss order thought and told Espen. Finding out the news made his mind spiral and in agony...he was alone...no...no he is not alone because he has his vengeance by his side as from there he joined the abyss order to tear the organization apart from the inside to get revenge for America. Since he will always love her...no matter what.

Backstory: Same thing, nothing much about his family but he was best friends with Espen. Going into the academy he was put into the science/research department. From there he learned a lot about the archons and gods that reside in the other nations and became obsessed with them and the idea of gods in general. He also learned the art of khemia. He became crazy and started acting different which weirded Espen out. It was at that moment he knew he didn't want to fight against but instead let them destroy their nation so he made a group: "The god worshippers". This group was more like a cult where they would end the lives of Khaeri'ah's defenders and soldiers in order to give the gods a better chance at destroying Khaeri'ah. During this time in this group and learning more about the gods he met America. He felt the weirdest vibes from her as if she was a god herself and because of that he became obsessed with her and to prove that she was a god. He told the group this but no one believed him as most of them said that America was too ordinary and how her family was too boring to be gods. But even so he didn't want to give up on proving them that America was. So he began to try to get closer to her while developing his obsession even further. But during their talks he couldn't help but to feel upset whenever America spoke about her job as a soldier and how she would beat the gods and save Khaeri'ah. One day Espen came to him saying how people were doing very bad stuff to America and how he even had to witness it with his very own eyes. This enraged Henrik because he knew that it was his fellow group members trying to prove how ordinary she really was....that was their worst mistake. Henrik and Espen disposed of every single trace possible and left as if nothing happened...at least Henrik did. Henrik didn't know how wary Espen got by him ever since but even if he did he wouldn't care, he had no regrets. Soon Henrik started dating America but because of that his obsession became worse, he didn't show it to her but if anyone were to touch or speak to her the wrong way they'd end up being gone. One day he and America decided to take their relationship further and do...the indecent things but while they did Henrik got so unhinged by his obsession that she was a god that he started speaking "nonsense" about her being one in front of her while he was on top. America denied this as if it was a joke but still a bit creeped out but Henrik didn't budge. Henrik even admitted being the one in charge of the god worshipping cult that have ended many many lives. He also said how their plan is to let the gods win and this made America surprised, scared, but mostly frustrated. She didn't want to believe it but everything started to connect. America started to get upset at him and tell him to get off and leave but Henrik only continued. She yelled saying how he was disgusting and that he will be stopped and that she will keep fighting for Khaeri'ah. She kept on trying to get him off of her disliking this act of "love" now. Henrik was getting very upset now and began to choke her saying if she won't join them then he'll have to end her and continue worshipping her on a stand. America's fight or flight kicked in and she was doing everything she can to live. This simple strangle from a sexual assault became a whole battle of weapon and hand. In the end America killed him and he never knew what happened next...until. One day after the cataclysm he revived, he was not an abyss mage or any other abyssal monster of any sort but this horrific beast. Nightmare fuel if you will. He loved it. He eventually learned what had happened to Khaeri'ah and was thrilled but hearing about America "dying" to the abyss order made him EXTREMELY ENRAGED. He wanted revenge for them taking down HIS god. From then on his mission was to take them down because he wanted to be the one to torture her, he wants revenge for America. Since he will always love her...no matter what.
