Caroline and Chris move over to a table in the corner of The Leaping Frog.
I know that table, Chris and I have sat there before.

Chris doesn't even look guilty or ashamed of himself.
If anything, he looks excited.

"So you can't figure out what happened to her, huh?" Chris runs his fingers through his blonde hair as he talks.

Looking at Chris brings even more memories back.
I see flashes of us holding hands in the field behind The Leaping Frog.
I see flashes of us whispering gently to each other at school.
I see flashes of us walking through the mall and laughing at each other.
I see flashes of him and George punching each other.

"Nope. It's almost like she didn't even exist in the first place." Caroline says, breaking me out of my thoughts.

"Why'd you come here tonight?" Chris's blue eyes look tired as he speaks.

"For shits and giggles." Caroline says sarcastically.

Chris laughs.
I've heard that laugh millions of times.
That laugh was the soundtrack to the last year of my life.

"You're funny." Chris smiles his winning smile once again.

Caroline sips her RedBull arrogantly.

"So how'd you get here?" Chris asks once he realizes that Caroline has no desire to speak to him.

"I stole my dad's car." She says simply.

Chris laughs again.
"You are definitely Violet's sister."
Chris looks at Caroline the way he used to look at me.
Caroline is oblivious.

"Well, I can't drive. At one point I was sure that I was going to slam into a tree." Caroline giggles a little.

"So I'll be driving you home tonight." Chris smiles gently.

"That's unnecessary." Caroline smiles back at him.

I can imagine the thoughts running through her head.
The same ones that used to constantly run through my mind.
Chris is such a nice guy.
Chris is so gentle.
Chris is so kind.

How wrong was I.

Chris and Caroline walk slowly back to the car.

"So, let me know if you ever need anything." Chris smiles shyly once they've reached the car.

"Thanks." Caroline smiles a genuine smile at him.
I used to smile at him like that, too.
Look at where it got me.
