Ethan Morgan x Reader - The Battle of the Nerds

Ethan Morgan and Benny Weir were outcasts at Whitechapel High. They were losers even in the eyes of other losers. But they did have one thing that no one could take from them; they were the smartest kids in the school.

The pair of nerds sat in their Honors Anatomy class, awaiting the results of their latest test on the parts and functions of the brain. The teacher, Mrs. Orborne, announced the students who had the highest grades on her test to the entire class after particularly difficult exams. Ethan and Benny always took the highest scores, but now they wanted to see who dominated this time.

"Now, this was a pretty hard test for all of my classes," Mrs. Osborne explained to an anxious class, "In fact, only three people got an A out of all four of my Anatomy classes, and they're all in here."

Ethan and Benny shared a confused look as the class discussed the possible identity of the three intellectuals.

Who could possibly be the third one?

"Curious?" Mrs. Osborne asked with a chuckle, bringing the student's attention back to her, "Well, the student who got the highest score is..."

With thoughts of the third contender pushed from their minds, Ethan and Benny smirked at each other as they mentally put bets on who got the higher score. They both prepared themselves to accept the praise of their classmates.

    "(Y/N)."

You smirked confidently to yourself as the class burst into applause.

"Come get a candy bar," Mrs. Osborne smiled, and you proudly accepted. You strutted up to her desk, smiling when you looked down at the caramel chocolate bar.

"Thank you," you smiled before returning to your seat.

Ethan and Benny stared at each other with their mouths hanging open. No one had ever beaten them before. Not only were they beaten, though, but they didn't even know you.

You were the newest addition to Whitechapel High's student body. You had only moved to town a week ago, and the Geek Squad had only seen you a few times.

After one look at you, the boys decided that you were another preppy hot babe like their friend, Erica. They never would've guessed that you were as intelligent as them, but now, you surpassed them.

"Wow, someone finally beat Ethan and Benny," Izzy, the school's gossip, announced, making the geeks blush with embarrassment.

"Well, Ethan and Benny tied for second place," Mrs. Osborne interjected to try to save the teen's damaged egos, "Come get your candy, boys."

The boys sluggishly approached Mrs. Osborne's desk with their tails in between their legs. They gingerly accepted the caramel chocolate bars and gave a small thanks. They silently sat back down as they ate the sweet chocolate.

You eyed them strangely; they just seemed so...weird...

But before you could think about it any longer, the bell rang.

You rushed out of the room and headed to your favorite place in the entire school; the cafeteria. The only problem was that you hadn't made any friends yet, so lunch also meant sitting alone at a table with your nose buried in a book. It wasn't the most ideal situation, but it beat trying to socialize with fake preps and arrogant jocks.

As you sat down with a tray full of tasteless slop, you put your earbuds in and selected one of your many music playlists. You smiled contentedly to yourself as the song "Say Amen" by Panic! at the Disco played and you opened the first book of the Lord of the Rings series. You were lost in your own world of creativity.

Suddenly, a hand tapped you on the shoulder. You jumped completely out of your chair, your earbuds ripping from your ears and your book falling to the ground as you did so. Your arm came up, poised to strike, as you came face to face with the two distraught nerds from earlier.

"Uhh, hi. I'm sorry, we didn't mean to scare you," the taller one apologized to break the awkward silence as you lowered your arm. You nodded as you reached down to pause the music that still blared from your earbuds.

"Here, let me get that," the shorter boy offered as he bent down and picked up your book, "I hope you didn't lose your page."

"No worries, thanks," you smiled, "Can I help you guys with something? I mean, I'd ask if you guys needed some help in Mrs. Osborne's class, but I think you guys understand things pretty well in there."

The boys cringed at the mention of your Anatomy class. You gave them a weird look as you awaited their answer.

"We saw you sitting by yourself, and we were wondering if you wanted to sit with us and our friends," the taller one offered, nodding over to a table where two beautiful girls and a geeky blonde boy sat.

"Sure," you nodded as you reached down to grab your things.

"Do you need any help?" the shorter one asked as you struggled to balance your books and your lunch.

"Actually, yeah," you blushed, "Would you mind grabbing my book, please?"

"Of course," he smiled at you, his eyes widening as he realized what you were reading, "No way! Benny, look at this!"

The taller male, who you assumed was named Benny, looked down to where the shorter male brandished your book, "Oh wow, really? You read Lord of the Rings?"

"I do," you smiled as the boys led you to their table, "I'm actually rereading the series. I'm between books right now."

"Have you ever read Game of Thrones?" Benny asked with a cocked eyebrow.

"Yes, actually," you smiled, "I have all of the books."

"Wow, you're absolutely perfect," Benny smirked as you approached the table, "How did we find such a stunning babe like you?"

You blushed furiously, your cheeks turning bright red at his compliment.

    "Benny!" the shorter male scolded.

"Oh, calm down," the boy who you assumed was Benny rolled his eyes as he set his lunch tray on the table, "We were both thinking it. I just had the guts to say it."

"Woah, who's this babe?" the blonde boy asked, his eyes alight with wonder as he looked you up and down.

"See," Benny remarked to the shorter male before turning his attention back to his friend, "Guys, this is (Y/N). She's in our Anatomy class. She's new to Whitechapel."

"Hey," you greeted with a small voice.

"(Y/N), you've already met my buddy, Ethan. The other guy is Rory, and these two gorgeous babes are Sarah, Ethan's babysitter, and Erica, a blonde goddess to be messed with."

The two girls rolled their eyes at Benny's flirtatious introduction, but they didn't say anything to him.

"Benny! She's not my babysitter!" Ethan whined, "She babysits Jane!"

You giggled at Ethan's protests as the girls turned their attention to you.

"Blink twice if you were brought here against your will," Sarah deadpanned, making you laugh.

"No, I wanted to come over here," you giggled, "It beats sitting alone."

"What brings you to Whitechapel?" Erica asked, her eyes narrowing as she looked you over.

You stared at her weirdly before you answered. "My Dad got a job here, so we moved. Is that not allowed, or did I just miss something?"

"Why is a beautiful girl like you hanging out with a bunch of geeks?" she continued interrogating.

"I could ask you the same thing," you remarked, "Plus, I'm a geek too, and they asked me to hang out with them. You got a problem with that?"

"Sorry, she's just a little worried," Sarah apologized before Erica could respond, "We've had a little trouble with new people before, that's all."

"Well, I'm just a new girl trying to make some friends," you sighed as you sat down, "Sorry for being harsh. I grew up in a rough area of New York, so I know how to throw a punch when needed."

"Now, who was that chick that absolutely demolished you in Mrs. Osborne's class," Rory asked to change the topic, "The whole school is talking about it!"

You snickered as Benny facepalmed and Ethan's cheeks burned red.

"Rory...(Y/N)'s in Mrs. Osborne's class with us," Benny informed the embarrassing teen.

"Oh, sorry...(Y/N), who burned Ethan and Benny in Mrs. Osborne's class today?" he asked innocently.

Your cheeks reddened. Was it that big of a deal that you got a better grade than these two on that test?

"Rory, it was (Y/N)!" Ethan nearly screamed, "(Y/N) got the best grade!"

"Wow...Really?" Rory asked as if he was truly astonished.

"What's that supposed to mean?" you challenged him as you narrowed your eyes.

"It's just that you're so beautiful," Rory explained, "You just don't seem like the intelligent type."

Sarah nearly choked on her food as the words slipped past Rory's lips. The entire table went dead silent as Ethan and Benny stared at Rory with wide eyes.

"What?" Rory asked as you glared daggers at him, "Was it something I said?"

"You know, I'm starting to think you're not the intelligent type either," you seethed, "What do you mean I don't like the 'intelligent type'? Girls can be beautiful and smart."

"You just seem more like a cheerleader or something," Rory explained, making Erica snicker. The others stared at him like he lost his mind.

"Well, you better stop jumping to conclusions," you suggested, "because I'm no cheerleader."

You quickly stood up, and in one fluid motion, grabbed your stuff and threw away your trash. You heard the others yelling your name, but you didn't care. Rory wasn't the first guy to underestimate you; at your old school, plenty of guys overlooked you and assumed you only got the grades you got because of your amazing figure. In a school with predominately male teachers, it was a believable theory to the airheads whose egos diminished at the thought of a girl surpassing them.

You weren't going to tolerate that here, though.

You quickly plugged your ears with your earbuds and turned the volume all the way up, effectively silencing your new "friends".

You went the rest of the day without seeing any of the ragtag group of friends. You didn't mind; you were used to solitude and after lunch, you welcomed it.

As you packed your bookbag and prepared to go home, you felt someone tap your shoulder. You turned around to see who it was, only to stop dead in your tracks.

    It was Ethan.

    "Hey..." he greeted you awkwardly.

"Hey," you replied shortly before turning back to your locker, "Need something?"

"I just wanted to apologize for Rory," he explained, "He really didn't mean anything by it-"

"Look, not to be rude or anything, but I've had guys underestimate my intelligence for my entire life," you informed him as you cut him off, "I'm tired of hearing their excuses, so save your breath."

"He really didn't, he just says stupid things," Ethan continued despite your efforts, "Hot girls just don't care about school like you. His comments were inappropriate, and he feels bad-"

"If he felt bad, he'd be here apologizing instead of you," you rolled your eyes.

"He's been looking for you all day," Ethan interjected.

"Well, until I hear it from him, the apologies are worthless," you spat, "Oh, and don't be surprised if I find somewhere else to sit tomorrow."

With that, you left the school, praying that tomorrow would be better.
