Chapter Twenty-Three
(y/n)'s POV
Lucky for me, the day of my one year anniversary with Janis happened to be the weekend when the fair was coming into town.
I was taking Janis there for the day for our anniversary, and I was beyond excited. It was a really nice day, and we were gonna have a fantastic date.
I heard a knock on the door to my small apartment when I had just barely finishing doing my hair.
"Come in! It's unlocked." I called out, grabbing my backpack which functioned as a purse and stuffing my jacket inside. I heard the door open as I was grabbing my phone and keys and stuffing them in my pocket.
"Heyyy, baby. You ready to go?" Janis asked, immediately grabbing my hand. At this point, constant physical touch had become an unconscious habit, we didn't even realize how close we always were.
"Yeah, of course, lets skidaddle!" I told her lightly, dragging her out the door and closing it behind me, pulling out my keys to lock it.
"Did you seriously just say skidaddle to me?" She laughed incredulously. I pouted, moving to grab her hand which she evaded as we started walking.
"Yes I did in fact." I said defiantly.
"I'm breaking up with you." She snorted.
"You wouldn't dare! On our anniversary, no less!" I gasped dramatically, holding back the giggles that threatened to spill out and make my words unintelligible.
"It's not my fault you used that dumb phrase." She retorted.
"Don't I get a pass for a special occasion?" I asked, holding the door for her as we left the apartment building. She looked back at me, examining me for a long moment before sighing.
"Fine, only because you're cute." She rolled her eyes, grabbing my hand again.
"Yay! Dang right I am!" I cheered, earning a carefree laugh from my gorgeous girlfriend.
We continued to chatter lightheartedly on our way to the fairground, with me earning many groans in fake annoyance out of Janis. It was a fun game to see how long it would take her to break and stop pretending to hate my guts. My personal record was a whole ten minutes.
When we got there, there were so many games to play. There was even a huge Ferris wheel, adorned in numerous twinkly lights that I was sure would be stunning come nightfall.
When I looked beside me, I saw Janis gazing up at it with an unreadable expression, so I tapped her shoulder as a distraction.
"Let's go play some games!" I squealed, grabbing her hand to drag her towards our first victim- I mean destination: a classic carnival game.
"Not to brag, but I'm pretty great at ring toss," I informed her cockily with a wink.
"Suuuure, prove it." She challenged.
"Alright. If I win, you buy me lunch. If I lose, I'll buy yours." I declared, grabbing a dollar to give to the attendant of the game.
"You're on. Can't wait for free lunch." Janis snickered.
The attendant handed me three little rings and stepped aside silently for me to play. I narrowed my eyes in concentration, carefully examining the bottles.
First ring: landed.
Second ring: miss.
I could feel Janis lean closer, almost throwing me off my game as I shook my head, clearing my mind to concentrate.
Third ring: landed.
Anyone in the vicinity could hear my joyful yelps and Janis's deep, guttural groans of annoyance.
"Guess who got 2/3, baby!" I cackled victoriously. "Meaning I win because I landed the majority of the rings! Boom!"
"Fine, fine, shut up already." Janis complained, still smiling softly down at me. She was naturally taller than me, but her high platformed docs always made me look short in comparison.
"You two are adorable together," the attendant said, drawing our attention to her. My eyes widened for a moment before a smile settled on my face.
"Aww, thanks! Bye, have a good day!" I told her politely, dragging Janis onto the next game. We played many together until our late lunch around 2pm, which I'd hijacked to pay for as an anniversary gift.
She argued with me on it for a solid minute while a line formed behind us.
The rest of the day was spent in sweltering heat, playing games and jamming to the loud music. It was everything I could have wanted and more for my anniversary with the love of my life and (late) high school sweetheart.
When the sun finally began to set around 8, the sunset was breathtaking but the chill had set in, and I could tell Janis was unprepared. She'd ditched her usual bulky jacket to survive the heat, instead wearing a thick black tank top and light blue jean shorts. I grabbed my jacket out of my backpack, a mustard yellow North Shore Lions hoodie with a very soft and fuzzy interior.
I immediately held it out to her, silently demanding she take it with no room for debate.
"But (y/n) that's your-" she started to refuse but I pressed a kiss to her lips, slowly and softly before pulling away.
"You're freezing your ass off, darling. I'm not letting you die of hypothermia." I told her simply. She rolled her eyes and took it, pulling it quickly over her head, messing up her hair a bit in the process.
"You're so dramatic."
"You love it."
"Correction: I love you, despite how much of a dramatic dumbass you are."
"Never mind that, we should go on the Ferris wheel! It's so pretty! It'll be so romantic, let's go!" I said, dragging her into the (surprisingly short) line for the huge ride.
Janis didn't complain, but was a bit quieter now. I figured she was a bit tired from our long, eventful date so I left it be until it was our turn to board.
I stepped on and Janis followed reluctantly, sitting closer than normal and wrapping both her arms around my closest one as we were raised a level.
We continued our casual conversation until we were a just a couple spots below the top of the huge wheel, when Janis seemed to fall silent. I glanced over, shocked to see pure panic written on my lover's face.
"What's wrong?" I asked, drawing her attention.
"Nothing," she blurted quickly, too quickly.
"I mean it, what's wrong?"
"..."
"Are you afraid of heights?" I asked, the realization just now dawning on me. She nodded quickly, eyes fixated on the small floor beneath us.
When we moved up, she whimpered and cuddled closer to me. I grabbed her face, softly caressing her cheek with my thumb and gazing into her caramel colored eyes.
"Hey, it's okay, you're safe. I got you, darling." I whispered, feeling her body relax a bit. She stayed silent, opting to stare at me softly.
"Sorry for bringing you up here." I apologized softly, my voice hardly above a whisper.
"It's alright, I'm not that scared. It's just the moving part that freaks me out a lot." She explained softly. I nodded, smiling at my dear lover.
"That's good, but I'm here to protect you, ya know. I got you." I promised.
"Yeah." She whispered, now smiling. We moved and suddenly we were at the top of the Ferris wheel, at the top of the world. I looked around, giggling at the beauty around me.
"It's beautiful." I breathed.
"You're beautiful," Janis responded, drawing my attention back to her. When I looked at her face, she was gazing lovingly at me.
"Stop being so cheesy!" I laughed, glaring playfully at her.
"Never." She said before pulling me in to a kiss, slow and sensual. My eyes fluttered closed as I could feel her smooth lips moving in tandem with mine as I immediately kissed back, our lips sliding over each other naturally. My hands moved to her waist to pull her closer as hers landed on my face, tilting my head to give her better access.
Our knees filled in the gaps between each other's legs as we kissed. Bare skin brushed skin, sending pleasurable shivers down my spine.
When we parted, a string of saliva connected our lips and frankly I didn't care, staring at the woman I loved.
"Happy anniversary, babe."
"Happy anniversary, darling."
