Lolita Spread
So I'm starting an art journal and bought a really nice mixed media sketchbook as a graduation gift to myself. I've recently become obsessed with art journaling and followed a million journaling accounts on instagram and tumblr.
If you haven't read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, go do it now! It's an amazing book written by a literary genius. Not a single word in that novel is placed there unintentionally.
Page explanation:
Lips: "Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."
Butterfly: Along with being a writer, Nabokov did research in entomology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University from 1942 to 1948, and later discovered several butterfly species and subspecies, including "Nabokov's wood nymph."
Note card: Nabokov wrote all of Lolita on note cards (later he put all 500 cards in a box and lit it on fire. His wife thankfully saved it). Drawings and writing are based on this note card, but I replaced the words with quotes from the book.
Cursive quote: First lines of the book (Lana Del Rey's song "Off to the Races" is based on Lolita and features these lines)
Corner picture: The film cover from Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Lolita, starring Sue Lyon and James Mason as Lo and Humbert.
