Chapter 5
My alarm clock starts blaring as I outstretch my arm to try and snooze it. I’m so used to doing it, usually not having to wake up so early, before remembering I now go to school. I turn the alarm off and swing my legs over the side of my bed with a heavy sigh. Wait, bed? Someone must have put me and Toga in our rooms after I fell asleep. Something tells me it might have been Dabi, just from the way the blanket is warmer than usual. I yawn as I get up and get into my U.A uniform.
By the time I’m up and headed downstairs to grab breakfast, Shigaraki is awake and sitting at the dining room table. “Morning Shiggy.” I yawn again, not fully awake as I pop some waffles in the toaster. "Training is gonna last for about an hour or so after school. I’ll contact you when heading home.”
“Sounds good. Hey Meimi, be a dear and keep an eye on some of your classmates. Especially that Bakugou kid. From what you told us, he sure has quite the temper and attitude to join us.” Shigaraki is stretching his neck again, his pinky lifted off of the cup of whatever he’s drinking as to not disintegrate it. I simply nod, glancing at the time. My train will be here soon.
“Of course, Shiggy. Tell Toga I left her some waffles when she wakes up.” With chocolate covered waffles wrapped in a paper towel in my hand, I start towards the station. The train is extra empty today and for a moment, I wonder why. The pointless question goes as quickly as it came, leaving me thoughtless in a dead silent train car.
The ride was incredibly slow and there’s a slight ringing in my ears I can’t seem to get rid of. Even as I step off the train and begin my walk. The streets are busier than the station now, which isn’t a surprise. It’s not often I see people drive around, which makes the sidewalks crowded.
My focus stays ahead of me, the chattering of people around me becoming drowned out by static in my head. The time is passing by even slower. It feels like there’s an hour between each step. God what is so different about today? It feels unnatural. I once again get lost in my thoughts, closing my eyes momentarily as I take a deep breath in.
That’s when a hand grabs my shoulder and before I can even exhale, their wrist is wrapped tightly in my hand. It only takes a second for me to realize I’m in class. I must have been zoning out for quite a while. I glance at the clock to see it’s already lunch time. Man my sense of time sure is warped. Too focused on the time, I don't register the fact that my grip on whoever’s wrist has tightened more. That is, until the person tries pulling it away.
“Woah! Sorry to freak you out Mei, I just wanted to check on you!” Upon seeing a stunning pink-hair girl in my hold, I let go. “You’ve kind of been out of it since you got to school. Then the lunch bell rang and you didn’t even bat an eyelash.”
I chuckle sheepishly, blushing slightly in embarrassment. Great, that means I’m gonna have to ask for notes.
“Yeah. Just didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. Must have thrown my sense of time off.” I rub the back of my neck, flashing a reassuring smile at Mina. Her voice is so clear and… present. It cut through the static and ringing in my ears, which was a relief. I was starting to get a headache from the white noise. As I finish speaking, I see the vibrant student’s eyebrow furrow in slight worry. The look is gone quick enough for me to wonder if it was just my imagination.
“Wait, you stayed behind for me?” I ask, shaking my head slightly. Mina nods, her wide smile returning.
“Of course! We have a lunch date to get to!” Mina’s arms quickly loop around mine as she pulls me to my feet. A date?
Date????
Now, I never called it a date! Those were her words, not mine! Maybe she likes me. God, I hope she does. Unless she means it in a joking way, if so then why am I freaking out this much about it. Okay Meimi, stay cool. It’s not like the girl you have a crush on just said the two of you were going on a date. Everything’s fine, everything’s fine. Just. Stay. Cool.
“So Mei, tell me about yourself.” Mina’s arm is still looped in mine as we walk down to the lunch room, her focus forward as she speaks.
“Mm?” I’m pulled out of my gay freak out by Mina’s voice, the small noise of confusion leaving my throat as it takes a moment for me to comprehend her question. “Oh! Well, I’m from a small town in the more northern part of Japan. I lived there up until 5th grade year and-” I quickly cut myself off, catching myself before I reveal a little too much about my past. “And that’s when I moved here.” I don’t miss a heartbeat in resuming the sentence. Thankfully, Mina didn’t seem to notice. Or if she did notice, she didn’t say anything. “But I told you all about me yesterday, so now it’s your turn to spill.” Her smile becomes even wider as we near the cafeteria. Mina goes into a rather detailed description of her life before and after arriving at U.A., talking the entire lunch period as we ate. I don’t mind though. Her voice is pretty and her laugh is cuter than a litter of puppies. I could listen to her tell stories for hours.
The rest of the day drags on and on until finally the final bell rings. “Okay class. We have training for about an hour after school today. Head to locker rooms and get changed. You have ten minutes.” Our teacher has to stifle a yawn as the school days end. The whole class files out of the classroom and rushes to the locker rooms, not wanting to be late.
As my peers begin making their way towards Aizawa, the ten minutes ticks by quickly. Soon enough, everyone is out and ready. “Alright, we’ll be sparring today. It’s set up in the form of a competition. This is to prepare you for the sports festival. This means quirk usage is allowed. But just know I will step in if you go too far. I do not want to see anyone go to Recovery Girl at the end of all of this.” Aizawa shoots a glare at Midoriya before he explains the process to us in detail to make sure there are no misunderstandings later. “Once you are out, you can either go home early or continue training your quirks off to the side. The stadium is big so it should be hard to get in the way of the sparring match but still, be careful.” He ends the borderline speech as we are all given our sparring partners.
I thank him quietly as I’m handed the slip with my partners name on it. I try to hide the nerving smirk that spreads across my face as I read the name written in bold ink. The little piece of paper in front of me read: Bakugo Katsuki
Absolutely perfect…
