Y/n, Emily and Sue walked into the backyard, wanted to get some fresh air after all of the events. The boys were playing bat mitten, Austin came and took Sue. The brown haired poet walked to the other side of the net with Y/n walking next to her. "Well babe it's done, your poem and Y/n's song will be published right next to a thing I wrote about Percy Shelly" Y/n spun around to face George. "I'm sorry what?" The girl exclaimed surprised.
"Emily gave me the song alone with her poem, to publish in the article" He spoke. Y/n would have been fine with having it published but not with her permission and her picking out which song.
Y/n would have been fine with it being published but not without her permission.
"The printers have it, it will be out next week" Emily walked towards the barn and pressed herself against it. "Em what's wrong?" Y/n asked "I'm just......" she didn't want to say it, but she had too "....scared" she confessed. "You....your fearless...and brave....and a genius...." Y/n turned the girl around by her shoulders "you have nothing to be afraid of...alright?" Y/n spoke
'god I wish I could kiss her right now' Emily thought, but then George spoke. "And you are too Y/n your music is going to be everywhere" Y/n smiled lightly.
"EMILY! Y/N" The two girls looked towards the porch and saw Lavinia standing there with baskets in her hands. She kept calling for the two "EMILY! Y/N! YOU HAVE TO COME INSIDE TO MAKE DINNER!" She yelled out to them.
"Come on" Y/n pulled the poet by her arm, towards the house. Emily would definitely kiss her after dinner was done. They past the fence where Henry was holding a chicken against the stump with one hand and an axe in the other. He swung and hit the chickens neck. Emily covered her eyes and Y/n's before they saw the head being removed.
Y/n and Emily went to the kitchen, Mrs Dickinson was placing the chicken feet into a bowl, Lavinia was Peeling potatoes with a knife, Emily started cutting strawberries and Y/n started cutting onions. The moved around doing different things to get the dinner cooked.
Y/n wipped the tears that fell because of chopping the onions, Emily smiled lightly at the girl across from her, as she placed all the ingredients into a bowl that Mrs Dickinson had past to her.
One they had done and everything was cooking Emily and Y/n went to set the table. Y/n carried the cups and Emily carries the plates, they placed everything down in front of each chair. Then Y/n went around placing a knife and fork and spoon at each plate, whilst Emily wrapped them with a napkin.
Y/n went outside and colleted a few flowers, she walked inside with the bouquet of flowers and placed them in the middle, of the table in the vase with water.
She took a rose from the vase and handed it to Emily who was standing next to her admire her and the work that had done. "What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
Emily smiled and took the rose "Shakespeare.....nice" she spoke and placed the rose next to her plate so she could take it up stairs later.
***********
They sat at the table, Mrs Dickinson and Mr Dickinson on the two far end of the table, Y/n and Emily sat next to each other with Lavinia sitting by Y/n's other side, Austin and Sue sat across from them. Y/n held Emily's hand under the table.
"Wonderful chicken Mrs Dickinson" he addressed his wife, then everyone complemented the chicken and how well it tasted "well thank the girls they helped" Emily smiled at Y/n, "well some of us did" Lavinia said, Emily reached past Y/n letting go of her hand to hit Lavinia's side lightly.
"Hey Em where did you get the rose?" Lavinia asked, looking down at the beautifully kept rose "I found it when I went out to get flowers for the vase" Emily lied well she wouldn't call it a lie, because someone had found it on the way to get flowers for the vase it just wasn't her.
Now now, listen here" Mr Dickinson spoke, Lavinia took the ribbon out of her hair to play with her cat that is sitting on her lap.
"Now I have a rather exciting announcement. As you know, in addition to running my successful law practice, as well as maintaining my position as treasurer of Amherst college, I have served two terms in the Massachusetts, house of Representatives" He explained.
"Well, now I have my eye on something bigger. I've decided to run for Congress" he continued. The table congratulated him, "father, that's marvelous." "Way to go, Dad."
"Thank you. I appreciate your enthusiasm, you mother was quite opposed to the idea" The table looks from Mr Dickinson to Mrs Dickinson.
"Well, I just don't want you away from home so much" she explained
"Candidates are always moving about. we've got to get out the vote, now, don't we?, The vote and the message." Mr Dickinson told the table, everyone continued to eat.
"Father, are you an abolitionist?" Lavinia asked as she ate.
"Oh, no I wouldn't say that, I don't take any kind of radical position." He explained. Y/n zoned out, half way through the conversation "sometimes I feel like a slave" Emily voice her thoughts, "Emily?!" Y/n whispered shocked, her eyes widened, Everyone looked at Emily shocked "You are a spoiled girl, from Amherst Emily, far from a slave" Mrs Dickinson said.
"It's a messy business, but we must
keep the Union together at all costs. That's my platform. That and let's bring
the railroad to Amherst. That too." Mr Dickinson tapped the table three times.
"Oh, the railroad? That's fancy." Lavinia said
"Yes, Lavinia, if I'm elected"
"you will hear a train whistle
outside your bedroom window."
"That sounds like a nightmare." Emily voiced, getting another look from everyone but Y/n who just stabbed the chicken on her plate.
"Yes, well, congratulations, Father." Austin said bring the attention from Emily to himself "Now, we have an announcement
to make as well." Everyone looked at him. Sue and Austin looked at each other, then Austin began to speak "Sue and I have discussed it and we've decided we're not moving to Detroit. We're staying here in Amherst....with the family." Everyone cheered and smiled at the couple.
"This is wonderful news." Mrs Dickinson said
"You can hold the firm together
while I'm off running my campaign." Mr Dickinson told his son.
"And we'll have a big, lovely wedding. We'll invite all the Dickinson and Norcross cousins. And, Sue and Y/n, of course, your whole family will come." Y/n and Sue's faces dropped at the last sentence "um our whole family is dead" Sue spoke looking from Mrs Dickinson to her sister across the table who had her head down. Emily looked at the younger Gilbert, Emily reached out for Y/n's hand, but was stopped when she pulled hers towards her body. 'ouch' emily thought, but she pushed that feeling to the side.
"Well, it'll still be very nice." Mrs Dickinson mumbled, getting a look from Sue and Y/n. Emily tapped her glass getting the tables attention.
"Yes, Emily, what is it?" Mr Dickinson asked her daughter
"I also have an announcement. It's not anything crazy. You know, compared to Congress and getting married and what have you." She explained looked from her father to Sue and Austin
"Okay, well, what is it then?" Mrs Dickinson asked
"A poem that I wrote..." She took a breath "....will be published in the college magazine." She said getting silence in return not the happy congratulations or applauds that everyone else had gotten. Emily looked at Y/n in the corner of her eyes, she had a painstaking look on her face.
"I don't think I heard you correctly. Would you say that again?"
"My... My poem...will be published." She spoke her voice getting slightly quieter as she realised the mistake she had made for telling everyone.
"How dare you.....Have I or have I not
made myself quite clear.....that I do not approve of a woman seeking to build herself...a literary reputation, Emily?.....And now you've gone and done it!" Everyone at the table didn't want to make eye contact with anyone "Is there any way to stop this?" He asked mad
Emily shook her head "It's already gone to print."
"My God. You wicked girl. Your mother was right. We have given you too much freedom and now.....You have taken advantage of our kindness...And this is a bad time, Emily.....This is a very bad time indeed for you to exhibit such scandalous behavior!" Y/n looked at Sue.
"My God! You will ruin the good name of Dickinson." He yelled and hit the palms of his hands on the table, making everything jump. Everyone began to get up grabbing their drinks or plates, to leave.
