1. Because I could not stop

Episode one; Because I could not stop for death

Y/n layed in her bed in the early hours of morning as words flowed in her mind. She got up and sat down at her desk. She grabbed a pencil that she had stolen from Emily and a piece of paper also stolen from Emily.

She wrote the words down on the paper that had been keeping her awake all night. 'It'll be fine by dusk light, I'm tellin' you, Baby, These things eat at your bones and drive your young mind crazy' she was interrupted by a knock, She stood up a little irritated by being interruption, she opened the door and saw Mary on the other side. The girl smiled at her, but saw that she was holding two buckets, and sighed in disappointment. "Please Y/n, I already did it and besides You'll be my favourite if you do" Mary spoke quickly. "Fine" Y/n took the buckets from her hands "and I already know I am your favourite" She spoke again before walking out the door "you're the best, I love you"

"Yeah yeah, I love you too" Y/n laughed as she closed the door with her foot.

Sue woke up rubbing the sleep out of her eyes "I heard that by the way"

"Oh Sush you" Mary jokingly said and swatted the air as she walked away, Mary walked into what was the kitchen, that was slightly covered in dust Mary coughed as she walked through to get to the garden.

Emily stood at the well, with buckets "guess you were given bucket duty too" A voice said scaring Emily out of her throughs. She turned slightly to see Y/n standing there holding to buckets in each of her hands, a smile made its way to her face. "Yeah, if I get to see your face it is worth the walk back with the buckets filled with water" Y/n giggled "well I am thrilled that I made your day Miss Dickinson"

Emily put the buckets down, she wrapped the girl in a hug making her drop the empty buckets to the grass, to hug the Dickinson girl back.

Emily and Y/n moved away from to go back to the bucket that was hanging on the rope at the end of the well.

Y/n waited for Emily to finish winding the handle that brought up the bucket full of water. She looked around and spotted two flowers on the ground she picked them holding the stem and admiring the beauty in the simple flower. A blue flower and a simple white one. She looked at Emily and crouched beside her. The poet felt the gaze of the girl beside her. "For you Mi Amour" The Y/H/C haired girl placed the Blue flower in the brunettes hair, tucking the bit of her hair that had fallen in front of her face. "And for Lavinia" She placed the white flower in the other ear

Now it was Y/n's turn, Emily waited for her, "Em you don't have to wait for me" Y/n spoke as she moved the bucket full to the brim carefully and swapped it with the empty one, "I don't mind besides I like watching you work" Emily respond. Y/n's smiles as she turns the handle of the well.

"Are you coming over to my house?" Emily asked "as long as your poems are still about me then I will never stop coming over" Y/n responded not looking up at the girl. "They will always be about you, and you only"

"Just as my music will always be about you, and you only" Y/n spoke as she finished with the two buckets. She placed the second on the floor, and stood up to pick up them, she lifted them trying not to spill a drop.

She looked up to see, Emily looking at her in awe, "See you Em" She started walking in the direction of the town to get out of the woods. Emily rushed to walk next to the girl she had madly fallen in love with, spilling most of the water on the ground.

"Emily your spilling the water everywhere" Y/n laughed out, as Emily walked next to her. "And you haven't spillt a drop yet" Emily exclaimed like she was shocked that the girl next to her, didn't spill the water. When Emily knew very well that Y/n had a steady hand and wouldn't spill a drop, well at least if she did it was accidental.

The two girls spilit two ways to get to their houses. Emily returned home, as Y/n had a longer walk to get to hers. Emily walked into the kitchen to see her sister plucking white feathers off a chicken, that was strung up by a string, and into a bucket she was holding. Her mother turned around as she was tending to the fire that was heating up a large pot that was being suspend over the fire on two long iron bars.

Her mother walked towards her daughter who had gotten the water "we need that water an hour ago" She spoke. "Where have you been?" She questioned her daughter, as she went to take the buckets "Oh, Emily, these buckets are half empty" Her mother complained, as Emily let's her take it from her hands.

"You let it all spill out" Emily had a bored expression on her face, "you are a useless girl. Useless." Her mother spoke in happyish tone, she turned around to pour what water there, into the large pot to boil.

"Can't we just get a maid?" Emily asked tired of doing the chores all the time. "Over my dead body" her mother said, appalled by that idea, that her oldest daughter had suggested.

"we own six horses, mum. I think we can get a maid" Emily walks up to her sister and takes the white flower out of her hair "here, Vinnie, A flower." The brown haired girl held up the flower and placed it in her sisters hair "for me?" The youger sister asks.

"When your father married me, I said he was getting the best housewife in all of Hampshire county." Their mother spoke as she carried a tray of scones with a cloth towards the table.

"No, in all of New England." Emily twirls a chair around to sit on it. "I'd rether scrape the skin off my fingers then get a maid." Lavinia rolled her eyes, at hearing the same talk from the last time Emily asked for a maid.

Their mother set the scones on the silver high tea stand. "And I'm bringing you girls up to be just like me." Their mother walked past Emily as she was sitting on the chair with the back of it, using it as a arm rest. She patted Emily's forehead, making her reel her head back. "But I don't really want--" Emily got interrupted by her mother.

"You're gonna make a good housewife one day, Emily Dickinson" her mother called out from the dinning room.

Emily rolled her eyes, at the word housewife, why would anyone want to be a housewife, stuck in a home to run around like a headless chicken, for hours on end with no purpose but to maintain a house and serve their husbands every whim, good thing Y/n isn't a man. I would be devastated if she was. Emily thought, but her thoughts were interrupted by her mother talking.

"Now, you need to go get dressed" her mother whipped her hands on a rag as she talked "we have another gentleman coming to see you." Their mother told her daughter, as she looked at Emily quickly then back to her work. "A gentleman?" Lavinia said dreamily

Emily looked from her sister to her mother "mum, no!" She stated annoyed about having to see another suitor, that was wasting her time, when she could write or listen to Y/n's music, literally anything but be bored to death, when she was going to turn them down anyway.

"This could very well be your new husband"

"That's so romantic." Lavinia sighed upset at the fact her sister got to see suitors all the time and she saw none. She continued to pluck the feathers. Emily walked past her mother to get out of the conversation "don't pull any stunts like you did the last time" she warned the girl. "I made an offering"

"You dropped a dead mouse onto that poor mans lap" she spoke

" Yes. Like a cat" Emily said as she sat on the stairs and took a scone from in between the bars. "You are not a cat Emily"

"Tragically I am a woman" Emily said sadly. She stood up and walked up the stairs, to her room.

The door bell ring, Mrs Dickinson walked towards the door whipping her hand on the cloth. She opened the door to see Y/n standing there"oh Y/n Dear, Hello I didn't think you would be coming around so soon"

"Sorry Mrs Dickinson I wanted to see Emily considering I can't find Sue or Mary, so I came here, is right now a bad time, I can come back later if you'd like" Y/n spoke

"Nosinse you basically live here anyway. We are always happy to have you here, Maybe you can start rubbing off on Emily, she has another suitor today" Mrs Dickinson stepped to the side to allow Y/n to walk inside.

"Well I will talk to her about it" Y/n said before making her way up to stairs to Emily's room. Y/n entered to poet's room, She was sitting at her desk. Y/n approached the girl whos mind was somewhere else, as she wrote.

Y/n rested her chin on the woman's shoulder "what are you writing?" She asked "a new poem"

"Cool can I read it once your done" Y/n asked

"Of course who else would" Emily said looked up and Y/n slightly before going back to writing.
