NINE
Mimi rolled her eyes for the umpteenth time as she watched Fara and Lola dress up for the dinner amidst loud chatter.
"It's just dinner, just to eat oo not even dinner party and you're even making up," Lara complained as she walked into the room for the second time since they'd started getting prepared for the dinner.
"Abegi, to me it's not only dinner, my crush will be around, he must notice me today," Lola replied as she adjusted her blue body con gown.
"But don't you think you're overdressed?" Lara questioned and Lola hissed.
"Overdressed ko, I don't understand why you want to become S.U, Fara, please help me pack my hair," she tapped Fara who was applying the lip gloss on her lips.
Lara shook her head before turning to Mimi, "Let's go jare, Mummy already left, you guys should meet us there."
"Of course, expect our grand entrance," Fara replied with a tugging smile while Lara chuckled before grabbing Mimi's hand and they walked out of the room.
Halfway to the main house, she turned to Mimi, "Can you still remember the way? I can't believe I've forgotten it sha, you're good with directions right?"
Mimi nodded and Lara smiled before following Mimi's trail. On getting to the entrance of main house, Mimi was surprised to hear her name, turning back to the direction of the voice, a smile appeared on her face.
"Wow, Mimi, you look better without the school uniform, what are you doing here?" Tife queried as she smiled widely at Mimi before waving at Lara who smiled in return.
Lara decided to reply Tife so far Mimi didn't take her jotter and pen with her, "Madam Lisha invited us over for the dinner."
Tife creased her brows in confusion, "Really? But the dinner is a family gathering, we hold it once a week in each member's house, you guys aren't family right? I know all my family members."
Lara shook her head, "No, we aren't family but Madam Lisha considers us as one, we stay in the chalet over there."
Tife smiled, "Oh, I didn't know you guys stayed with Christy."
Just then Christy walked out of the house, Mirabel had called her out, she was shocked to see Tife conversing with Mimi and Lara.
"What are you guys doing here?" She questioned while eyeing them.
"I guess aunty Lisha invited them for dinner," Tife replied with a smirk, Christy hissed before walking away but not without dashing them an hateful glare.
Tife smiled before leading Mimi and Lara into the house.
They settled down around the large dining table before Christy and Mirabel walked in. Mirabel was more than shocked to see Mimi and Lara before Christy decided to explain the whole thing to her.
"Ad we wanted to make a grand entrance sha? He isn't down yet gan," Mimi heard the voice of Lola beside her, she hadn't noticed when they walked in.
"Simi, go and call your brother," Lisha instructed and Cherry nodded before running up to call Christian.
They got back few minutes later and Lola had to restrain herself from screaming while Mimi rolled her eyes yet again before her eyes met with the guy sitting opposite her.
She eyed Christian before looking away, then Lisha instructed Christy to pray.
Christy cleared her throat before glancing at everyone, "Father Lord, we thank you for this day, for making us see another week's dinner, we give you all the glory and hope you'll dwell with us this night, bless this food and each one of us here, amen."
"Amen," they all chorused.
"Is that all?" Lisha asked with raised brows and Christy nodded slowly.
"Okay oo," and with that everyone picked up their cutleries ready to devour the food.
"Let me do proper introduction, right beside me is Sindara, she's the mother to this beautiful girls, Mimi, Fara, Lola and Lara," she pointed at each one of them as the eyes of the other occupants of the room followed her hand.
"And Sindara, over there is my younger sister, Nikki and her husband Daniel and their kids, Miracle and Mirabel," she pointed at the seats adjacent to her.
"And that's Mark, my best friend likewise my husband's bestfriend, husband to Kemi, my husband's twin sister and their daughter Tifeoluwa," she pointed at the seats adjacent to Jimi.
"Lastly, that's Folahanmi, younger brother to my husband and his wife Fiola and their sons, Kelvin and Kenneth," she pointed at the boys who were focused on their meal, they were the same age as Cherry.
************
The death of Benita shocked the whole school but then almost everyone seemed less concerned so far they never befriended her.
Since Mimi heard the news, she hadn't been herself as she kept on remembering what had happened on Friday; how Benita got killed.
"Hey, girl, what's wrong?" Dera questioned as she sat down on her seat with snacks in hand.
"I've been asking her since oo, it's not like Benita is related to her or something, she's been moody since morning, even Christy and her crew that could be considered as Benita's acquaintance aren't affected at all," Tife explained as she glanced at Christy, their eyes met but Christy hissed and looked away quickly.
Since they were young, they didn't really get along well, maybe because they had different personalities but now it seemed like Christy somehow despised Tife but she cared not at least she was a little bit closer to Christian, talking about Christian, her eyes travelled to his seat and she saw him smiling with Inaya; his girlfriend.
Dera's voice made her return her gaze to them, "I'm certain Benita's death isn't the cause of Mimi's foul mood, or is it?" She turned to Mimi who shook her head.
" I know it isn't, so, what's wrong? Did anything happen?" She arched her brows," Is anyone trying to bully you? Or is it because everyone knows you're staying with Christy?"
Mimi shook her head in response.
"Then what's wrong?" Tife inquired.
"Wait, is Kingsley trying to bully you again? Let me go and treat that stupid boy's fuck up," she made to stand up but Mimi held her hand in a way to stop her before picking her pen.
It's nothing to worry about. I'm just thinking about my therapy session starting this weekend.
She lied.
Tife and Dera nodded in understanding.
"Oh, don't worry, everything will be fine," Tife assured and Mimi forced a small smile.
"It's time for lunch, let's go and eat, see food is the only solution to every problem," Dera said with a smile while Tife chuckled.
"Of course, you only think about food, I wonder why you're not fat."
"It isn't in my gene, Mimi, let's go and eat jare, I'm sure Tomiwa would have been at the cafeteria waiting for us," Dera said as she dragged Mimi up.
"That's if Christy hasn't hijacked him," Tife added before standing up.
"True, I wonder why that girl thinks we are a threat to her."
"Abi oo."
They shifted to another topic till they got to the cafeteria, it wasn't filled up yet so far recess only started few minutes back. Immediately they got to their spot, Christy appeared and dragged Tomiwa away without any acknowledgement.
"That girl is sick in the head," Dera hissed as she scowled at Christy's retreating figure.
"I agree, let me place our order, jollof rice right?"
Mimi nodded and Tife smiled before walking away while Dera pulled out one of the four plastic chairs around the circular table for Mimi to sit.
"Seriously, Mimi, there's nothing troubling you right?" She asked with a serious look that almost made Mimi laugh.
She nodded in response and Dera smiled before her eyes scattered around the large cafeteria before it finally landed on Christian and his friends and then Inaya.
"That Inaya girl is always feeling herself, just because she's dating Christian now, she feels on top of the world, I'm certain she's only dating him for popularity, that girl is just a wannabe, she got into our school with a scholarship funded by Tife's mother but then she doesn't know her place, it's sure Christian is the only one that likes her," Dera rambled and Mimi pursed her lips as she looked at the said Inaya and Christian.
Not quite long, Tife got back and Dera went on talking about Inaya, they ended up gisting Mimi about Inaya and Christian's relationship till recess ended.
