Unavoidable
The beat of sixty feet stampeding on the ground was the only sound as we ran to the location of the bunker.
Twelve wolves, two bears, and a panther running through the early evening light must have truly been a sight to behold.
"I smell more hyenas" Nate said through the mind link.
"Damn" Alex grunted, "we're not even half way there yet."
I quickly scanned the area, looking for the source of the smell.
Suddenly, a few feet in front of me, a large shape plowed through one of the pack wolves we had brought with us. Snarling and snapping erupted from the tangle of fur. More hyenas jumped out of the tree line, circling us. With a resounding snap, our wolf broke the hyenas neck. He stood up then, and readied to fight more. As if on cue, all the hyenas attacked simultaneously. When two jumped on to Alex, I charged and tackled one off with my body. I used my heavy paw to pin him to the ground while I bit in to his throat.
"Try not to kill them" Natasha's human voice suddenly yelled.
"Seriously??" Jason yelled as he pinned one down.
"They're just drones. Not bad people. Just try to incapacitate them! I'm going to go destroy the first entrance" she finished and took off running.
The mental sigh that resounded through the group was almost humorous. I suddenly felt the hair on my neck rise, a strange eerie feeling quickly over coming me. I turned my attention upward to the tree tops and saw two glowing eyes staring at me. A large, golden cheetah jumped down from the trees to stand in front of me. She let lose a growl and hissed, which I returned with equal malice. She sprinted at me with lithe steps, claws unsheathed. I met her head on, not a single ounce of fear. I jumped up as we were about to collide and dug my claws into her back. I pulled them sharply along her spine, slicing deep. She screeched out in pain and turned to face me again. I knew that speed was my only option if I didn't want to kill her, so I bound upward, taking her down with a placement of my large paw on her throat. She started struggling and fighting me for breath, but I did not relent. Finally, she passed out from lack of oxygen. I quickly took my paw off her and have her a quick smell, to make sure she was alive.
I looked up to see Nate as a bear slamming a hyena's head against the ground until it too passed out. All the other hyenas lay spread out on the ground, either dead or unconscious. Alex immediately took off running in our previous direction. Out of no where, Natasha returned, jumping out of a tree and landing on Nate's back. She was covered in dirt and smelled like... gun powder.
Dynamite! When we had left, Natasha had a small bag tied to her back leg. I assumed she had clothes in it, like everyone else. But Bear shifters don't need clothes now that I think about it. She must have had explosives in it to blow up the entrances. She stayed in her human form as we sprinted onward. Five miles later she jumped off Nate's back and sprinted into the thicket again. I veered of the path and followed her.
"Where are you-" Alex started, but instead of finishing, he had the party stop running.
I chased Natasha all the way to the small trap door hidden underneath a few bushes.
"Help me!" she yelled out of breath. I quickly shifted back and caught the stick of dynamite she threw at me. I sat it up the way she was, trying to be as specific as possible.
Natasha reached in to her pocket to pull out matches but came up empty.
"What?" she whispered fiercely. "No! We have to go back. I dropped the matches" she yelled frantically.
"No problem" I said with a wicked smile and lit the fuse.
"Oh thank goodness" she yelled in a joking manner and took off running, dragging me by the arm behind her. Right as we reached the group, I heard the boom of the blown doorway. We both shifted in to our respective animals and took off running, Natasha leading the way. The group followed close behind.
Natasha lead us a few more miles then ran in to the forest. This must be where the door we needed to enter was. We quickened our pace. Natasha shifted in to her human form as she ran, flawlessly transition in time to skid to a halt by a hardly noticeable patch of dead grass.
"Here" she yelled, grasping a rock. I saw a small crack open up in the ground, but just barely. Natasha grunted with effort.
"They must have sealed it" she yelled through gritted teeth.
"Move" Nate said mid shift, his words coming out as gruff, garbled sounds. He placed both hands on the boulder shaped handle and pulled. He roared with the effort and his muscles flexed sharply. The metal of the door groaned and snapped off. He threw the door to the side and gasped for breath.
I shifted back and peered in to the dark hole. Alex appeared next to me, human and clothed. A wolf howl that didn't sound familiar to me rang through the night. I turned around and saw twenty wolves and the occasionally large feline surrounding us.
"Let's go!" Alex roared. Natasha nodded and jumped in to the bunker, followed by Nate and Brett. "You got this?" Alex asked Beta Andrew. With a nod of his wolf head, Beta Andrew took off toward the nearest attacker. I jumped in to the darkness next. I fell for about fifty feet and landed hard on a metal floor. I quickly moved out of the way as Alex's feet landed loudly a little after me.
"Which way?" I asked Natasha. I lit my arms on fire, giving us light and preparing myself for whatever might happen next.
"This way" Natasha sprinted down a hallway until we reached a large door. Two of the largest men I had ever seen sat outside the door. They're eyes were glazed over and they expressed no facial expressions.
"Move" I growled. They both released deep, guttural growls of their own and began shifting right in front of my eyes. Both of them were large tigers, strong and powerful looking. Alex moved to take a step in front of me, ready to shift. I placed my arm in front of him to stop him.
"I don't need this right now" I growled and used my telekinesis to slam one tiger against the wall. He was knocked out cold instantly. The other one jumped at me, mouth gaping. I let him get a few inches from my face, then threw the hardest, flaming Southpaw imaginable at his massive head. He flew sideways, but tried to hop up again.
"No" I yelled and shoved him against the wall using telekinesis again. I turned to the double steel doors and held both hand out in front of me. Imaging the doors as nothing but bed sheets, I clenched both my hands in to fists. The doors crinkled like tissue paper, flimsy and useless. I threw my arms backwards, discarding the doors over the group like nothing more than scrap metal.
"Quite an entrance you make, little kitty cat."
I dropped my hands down when the scene before us was exposed.
A large man stood before us wearing dark, military issue cargo pants and a black shirt. One sleeve of his shirt fell lost at his side due to the lack of arm. Wolves stood around him, growling loudly at us. Two lions were also resting calmly by the doors we had just come through, as if they had no doubt they would be victors.
"I guess you're Vladimir?" I asked, hoping to waste time so I could assess the situation.
"Good guess. Although I think you had a little bird tell you about me" he said, giving Natasha a chilling smile. She held her ground but I saw her sneer falter a fraction.
"Leave her alone" I growled, trying to bring his attention to me.
"It matters not. She'll be in my hands soon again" he growled out.
"Not going to happen" I lit my hands on fire, cracking my knuckles in the flames. The wolves who were aching to take a bite out of us at his side must have been given the order to attack, because they sprang forward. I sent the wolf that came at me careening to the side. He bashed his face against the steel wall and slid down the wall, unconscious. I heard the fighting commence behind me but I couldn't focus on that now. My goal was to get to Vladimir. I sprinted at him, but was hit from the side by another pesky lion.
I hate lions...
The lion pinned me under it's large paws and went for my throat with it's teeth.
"No no my pet. We can't kill this one" Vladimir said as he slowly walked toward us.
"Terri!" Alex yelled loudly as he held two wolves by the throat.
The lion glanced up to look at Vladimir, which is when I saw my chance. I ripped my arms out from under the lions paws, giving myself deep gouges from his claws. I placed both hands around the throat of the lion. Vladimir figured out what I was doing and made an effort to free the lion. I threw one hand at Vladimir, forcing him backward with a shield. I used my other hand to push the lion backwards and suffocate him with telekinesis. The lion roared and fought as it floated in the air, but slowly, he stopped moving. I dropped him and turned my attention to Vladimir.
"Very good" Vladimir said in strange, guttural tone. "But you won't be able to knock me out like these others. You're going to have to try to kill me... if you can" he yelled, and began shifting. But Natasha said he didn't shift!
Vladimir's face elongated with sharp canines and his hands changed, looking deformed. They were human hands but with due and sharp claws. Vladimir had only half way shifted, arming himself with wolf benefits.
I threw a jettison of flame at him, but he bounded out of the way, quickly adjusting his path toward me. He slashed at me with his claws, dragging them deep through my leg as I bound backward.
I cried out in pain, catching Alex's attention.
"Terri!" he growled as he fought off to snarling wolves.
"Fine. Busy." Between trying to keep Vladimir's snarling teeth from my flesh and attempting to land blows on him, I was having a hard time maintaining proper speech.
"Enough!" I yelled, final fed up. I reached my hand out and clenched it into a fist. I watched as an imaginary hand crushed Vladimir in it's grip. I could hear snapping as his ribs shattered beneath his clothes. I maintained my telekinetic grip on his and lit my other hand. I pinned him to the wall and walked to him, fist ready to pound through his skull.
"Who-" I started to ask when I felt a piercing pain rip through my leg. I looked down and found my leg in jaws of the other lion. "I'm tired of lions thinking I'm their food source!" I set my leg on fire. The lion immediately released me. I lashed out with one side kick and let lose a whip of flame that sent the lion slamming in to the back wall.
"Now" I continued, turning back to Vladimir, "who do you work for" I asked through gritted teeth.
Vladimir snarled viciously at me, saliva dripping from his maul.
"Me"
I whipped around. The gang had all stopped fighting and were watching Vladimir and I with cautious stances, however at the sound of the new voice, everyone looked toward the broken metal doorway.
"Dad-Daddy?" I whispered quietly.
Sorry about the ridiculously long wait! Had to keep the suspense going! But I am back and I have the final chapters ready! Love y'all.
