We walked into Art class and I almost wanted to turn around and walk right back outside. Inside the room sat Sophie, Sienna, and Brett. I wanted to be Nate's friend, and I was willing to defend him to my other...friends... but this was so new, I wasn't sure if I could argue with them and control my abilities. Although, I was starting to wonder if maybe the problem wouldn't be my other friends, but rather the random people in my art class that I didn't know who were currently staring at me like they wanted to kill me. Sophie, Sienna, and Brett just looked at me with confusion. Nate was staring at me and nodded subtly, moving to an easel in the far corner of the room. I stared at him then looked at Sophie. She motioned for me to come sit at an empty easel next to her. I headed her way and she immediately attacked me with questions.
"Why did you walk into class with Nate Searing? Don't you remember what I told you? Are you crazy? I thought you said you didn't want to draw attention to yourself?" she shot out questions a mile a minute.
I waited for a second and all three of them stared at me, waiting for an answer.
"Well, I guess I changed my mind. He's very nice and you should get to know him" I told them. All three of their mouths hit the floor. The teacher walked into the room and closed the door. She was probably around the age of forty and looked like the typical art woman, with black slacks and flowery top.
"Good morning students, how was your weekend?" she asked, and a few mumbled 'good's went around the room. She slowly made her way to the middle of the room, her heels clicking on the tiled floor. "Staying in the corner still, Mr. Searing?"
Nate glanced up from the floor and nodded, quickly giving me a look, and then returned his gaze back to the floor. The teacher looked at him sadly for a second, then began to turn around, but something took over me.
"No, he's not, ma'am" I said, and she turned and looked at me.
"I'm sorry, who are you?"
"Terri Falana. I'm new here" I responded.
'Hello Mrs. Falana, I am Mrs. Wright. What do you mean he's not staying there?"
"I mean", I stood up and walked over to Nate and his easel, "he's not going to stay in the corner" I picked up his easel and put it next to mine. I then turned around and gave him the look that made him abruptly stand up and take his stool next mine.
I sat down on my stool and looked at the teacher, waiting for her to began the lesson. She smiled at me and walked back to the front of the class, starting her lesson on impressionism. Nate slowly turned to look at me.
"What are you doing?!" he whispered yelled at me.
"I'm standing up for you because you won't" I whispered back.
"There is a reason for that!"
"You're not going to get me to change my mind so just stop" I told him, and then took up some charcoal and started drawing swirls on the canvas. Sophie, Brett, and Sienna stared at us as we argued, not quite sure what to think. I smiled at them and continued working on my art.
* * * * * *
Forty minutes later, the bell rang, signaling the end of second period. Nate grabbed his bag and took off out the door. I blew out a frustrated breath and stood up slowly,
"What is going on?" Sienna asked slowly
"I am friends with Nate Searing" I said loudly.
"Shhhh, don't say that so loud" Brett said angrily as we made our way down the hall full of scrambling people.
"Look, he's nice and I don't care if he has a horn coming out of his forehead. I'm his friend. The end" I smiled at them.
"I...well..." Sophie had no idea what to say.
"Wow, you shut Sophie up, I applaud you. It's whatever, I never really cared about the whole 'shun' thing with Searing anyway, so if you want to be his friend, fine" Sienna said logically, then took a right as we continued straight. I didn't know where I was going but I could see Nate's head far ahead of me in the crowd, so I followed him. Sophie huffed at what Sienna said, but still had no response. Brett just stared at the ground with his brow furrowed. Nate's head took a left into another classroom, indicating that I should enter that class for Calculus. I went into the class room, but Sophie stayed outside the door. I turned around right as Jason reached Sophie and they hugged. I knew, without using super hearing, that she was telling him what was happening. Jason grew a startled look and quickly snapped his head up to look at me in the classroom. I smiled a sheepish, 'oops' smile and turned quickly to find the classroom chairs in partners, and guess who didn't have a partner. I made my way to the desk by Nate's. His looked begged me not to, but I did anyway. Jason made his way, quickly, to where I was sitting, but slowed when he saw where I was sitting. He hesitantly approached me, I'm sure trying to figure out how to speak to me without being mean to Nate.
"Terri, what are you doing? There is an empty seat near Sophie and I" he asked, frequently glancing at the downcast Nate.
"I like this seat more" I replied with a tight smile.
"But...I thought Sophie explained how the seating goes here?"
"She did, she told me that this is a great high school and that you guys are nice and you don't judge and that you're all a little weird so I shouldn't be afraid. And neither should Nate" The guilty look that dawned Jason's face told me I had struck a nerve. He nodded grimly and turned and made his way to Sophie. Calculus went by without a struggle. The only thing Nate said to me was "Thank you".
