Chapter Twenty-Six: Mom Power
🕷
"I'm sorry I'm going to be gone on your day off," (Y/n) sighed, watching as her mom unloaded the dishwasher.
"It's not a whole day, I'm going to work at one so it's fine," Clara assured, "And May is coming over. You need school supplies anyway and this is a chance for you to hang out with your friends."
(Y/n)'s phone buzzed, and she glanced at it briefly, "That's MJ, she just got her license so she'll be driving us around all day."
"Make sure she drives safe," (Y/n)'s mom prompted, "You'll be getting your license soon enough."
"Yeah, that'll be great," (Y/n) nodded, slinging her purse over her shoulder, "I'll see you later mom, love you."
"Love you too, have fun!"
(Y/n) left the apartment and close the door behind her. She took the elevator down to the main floor and completely passed the receptionist desk. It was weird, not having Jess there all the time now, but Jess was busy managing the building so she couldn't and didn't have to work the desk all the time anymore.
"Get in loser we're going shopping!" MJ yelled from the car, drawing the attention of a few passersby.
"MJ come on," (Y/n) grumbled, getting into the back because Ned was in the front. Peter was next to her in the back.
"She did the same thing to both of us," Ned stated.
"You're an embarrassment," (Y/n) rolled her eyes, "You bring shame to our squad."
"And you guys are losers," MJ smirked, pulling into the New York traffic.
(Y/n) chuckled, leaning back in her seat. She looked over to Peter, who was looking down at his phone.
(Y/n) leaned over and whispered to Peter, "Hi."
"Hey," Peter looked up from his phone with a smile, "I was updating Happy on the whole Green Goblin situation."
"You still update Happy?" (Y/n) asked in astonishment.
"Well yeah," Peter nodded, "Mr. Stark trusts me to watch New York so he should know what's going on. Happy's the bridge."
"Fair point," (Y/n) leaned back, "Where's Harry?"
"He'll meet us there," MJ assured, "He said Bernard was driving him. Probably in their limo."
"Oh yeah, he's too fancy for us commoners, has to take the limo," (Y/n) said jokingly.
At the next stoplight, MJ unlocked her phone and held it up like it was a holy object.
"We need some tunes in here, do the honors guys."
The three passengers shared a look, knowing exactly what they were going to play.
"Start at the beginning," (Y/n) ordered as Ned pulled the album up.
"Alright, Alexander Hamilton it is."
The song began to play through the speakers and the group sang along with it. MJ had been lucky enough to get a car with bluetooth, although she explained that it was her only requirement when she went car shopping with her parents.
When they were halfway through Right Hand Man and twenty-five minutes into their drive - mid-day traffic slowing them down- (Y/n) was so engrossed in and her friends making fools of themselves to the surrounding cars, she completely missed her phone buzzing on the seat next to her. Because the screen was facing down, (Y/n) didn't see who was calling her either.
Three missed calls from "Mother of the Mutant"
(L/n) Residence- 20 Minutes Earlier
Clara (L/n) set the last of the plates in the cupboard, kicking the dishwasher closed with the heel of her foot.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
"Perfect timing," Clara beamed, opening the front door, "Hi May!"
"Clara, hi," May smiled, "Thanks for having me over."
"Of course! Come on in, I have the TV set up for a marathon, or the start of one at least."
"That's amazing," May beamed, taking off her shoes and sitting on the couch, "I'm glad we're friends, what with Peter and (Y/n) dating and all."
"Yeah. Young love, remember that?"
"All too well," May chuckled.
Clara sat down and began the show. The two talked comfortably throughout the different episodes about different topics that came up.
"I don't know how you do it," May suddenly stated, "Every time Peter goes out I feel like my heart doesn't start beating again until he comes back safe. It's so dangerous out there, what with all the villains popping up."
"It is nerve-wracking," Clara nodded, "But if you trust him to pass school, then you should be able to trust them to handle themselves. They have superpowers, so they at least have those, and (Y/n) was telling me that they were taught how to fight in Wakanda, so they're skilled, we know that."
"Yes they are, but the villains are skilled too," May pointed out.
"That's where you get stressed," Clara sighed, "But as long as they have each other, they'll be perfectly fine. My daughter can heal you know."
"Really?" May asked in astonishment, "That explains why Peter always comes home fine now. He used to come back with bruises and scratches and always blamed it on different things. I got suspicious, but I never expected he was Spider-Man."
"They watch out for each other."
"They're too cute," May groaned, "I don't know how to handle it."
"We embarrass them as much as possible while hoping they never break up," Clara shrugged.
"Cheers to that," May laughed.
The two watched their show for another hour until Clara perked up, pressing the pause button on the remote. The two were enveloped in silence, both sharing confused looks.
"Do you hear that?" Clara questioned.
"Yeah, it sounds like... beeping."
Clara looked towards the window, her eyes widening. She grabbed May's arm, pulling her to the floor behind the couch.
"Get down!"
An explosion rang through the apartment as the window in the dining room shattered. Over the explosion, the two women heard laughter comparable to that of the Mad Hatter.
"Let's take everything from the heroes before we take their lives," the voice sang, slowly coming closer.
Clara pulled out her phone and pulled up (Y/n)'s contact. She held the phone to her ear, praying her daughter would answer, nothing.
"What are we going to do?" May asked in a panic.
"Shit. (Y/n)'s not answering," Clara hissed after two calls going to voicemail, "We need to get out of the apartment."
"If we leave, he'll follow and other people can get hurt-" May stopped talking as soon as they heard the whir of Green Goblin's board approaching.
"Kitchen. go, go, go!"
The two women ran across the living, ducking as Green Goblin threw knives at the pair. They ducked under the counter, knowing they didn't have much time.
"Here," Clara clicked a call button on her phone, giving it to Clara, "Tell Charles that we need the X-Men."
"What are you going to do?" May held the phone up to her ear.
Clara opened one of the cupboards under the counter, reaching inside and pulling out a gun. She turned to May, "When your daughter's a hero you can never be too safe. I'll distract him, just make sure they know we need help now."
Clara moved out from under the counter, holding up the gun and standing confidently in front of Green Goblin.
"Hey!" She yelled.
Clara didn't give the villain a chance to attack her before she began shooting. As she expected, the bullets bounced off of his armor, but they did do damage to his board.
"Look at that, not only can the kid fight but the mom can too," Green Goblin cackled, "You're just a family of life ruiners."
Clara jumped to the side and kicked up the coffee table as Green Goblin dropped a bomb in the spot she was formerly standing in. Clara groaned as the table took the majority of the blow and she was just blown back into the wall.
"If you know what's best for you, you'll step away from her."
Clara could have cried from relief when she heard Logan's voice. It was deeper and raspier than normal. He was past his average angry. She felt someone help her up from the floor and grinned.
"Jean thank God," she laughed so she wouldn't cry. Her back hurt. How did (Y/n) deal with this all the time?
"I will get my revenge, and everything will be so much easier now," Green Goblin laughed before he flew from the window he came in from.
"Should we go after him?" Ororo questioned.
"We have bigger problems," Clara looked at their destroyed apartment, "May are you alright?"
May peeked up from the counter, phone still in her hand.
"I know you said that Peter and (Y/n) could handle anything but you should be a hero too," May stated.
"Thanks," Clara chuckled.
"Are either of you hurt?" Jean asked, looking over the two as if she were the mother.
"I'm alright, just a few scrapes and bruises," Clara said, and May nodded in agreement.
"Good," Jean looked around the apartment, "Do you want us to help you clean up? I can check with the Professor to see if any of the students have powers that can fix this."
"You don't need to go through all that trouble," Clara assured, "I'll talk with Jess and see what she says about repairs. This is how normal people handle villains attacking their homes... I take that back nothing about this is normal."
"Maybe you guys should come to stay at the school for a while," Scott spoke up, "This villain was targeting you two specifically."
A frightening thought crossed Clara's mind, she turned to May, "He targeted us like he knew who Spider-Man and Riptide were."
May's face paled, "How bad is that?"
"Very bad. Peter didn't even want to tell you, can you imagine a villain knowing?" Clara sighed, "But Peter and (Y/n) would run away before they would let us leave Queens."
The X-Men nodded in agreement. Rogue was the one to speak next, "You know who to call if you change your minds. Stay safe alright? I wish we could do more but we have lessons to teach."
"Yeah of course, thank you."
Kurt grabbed the X-Men and bamphed the group out of the apartment. May looked down at Clara's phone, holding it out to her so she could see what was on the screen.
Is everything alright?
Mom did I forget something? What's going on?
Honey you and Peter need to come home, we gotta talk
The Mall
(Y/n) looked up from her phone, showing the text from her mom to Peter. They had just finished at the first store, a few bags on their arms.
"She texted back so they're okay," (Y/n) stated, "But now we need to leave."
"If you text me a list I'll get what you need," MJ offered.
"You're the best, I'll pay you back I promise," (Y/n) assured, she grabbed Peter's hand and began to leave before she stopped, slowly turning to Harry, "Was your dad home when you left?"
"He was in his study but he said he had a meeting. Why?"
"I uh, though I saw him in a car on the way here.
(Y/n) and Peter shared a knowing look. The two turned and ran out of the mall, hailing a cab as fast as fate would allow.
They paid the cabbie when it stopped at (Y/n)'s building and ran out. (Y/n) gasped and looked up at the hole in the building, from the looks of it, it was on her floor. She then noticed the police cars and Stark Relief Foundation trucks around them.
"(Y/n), Peter!"
The two turned and saw May and Clara running towards them. They had a few bandages on their faces and arms but they seemed relatively unharmed.
"What happened?" (Y/n) asked.
"What happened is that you, for once in your life, were not on your phone," Clara snapped, before hugging (Y/n), "I'm sorry, this has just been a stressful day. Green Goblin attacked me and May, we had to call the X-Men cause we couldn't reach you two."
"Mom, I'm so sorry, I didn't think anything like this would happen."
"Wait, Green Goblin attacked just you two?" Peter asked.
"Yeah, that's what we need to talk about," May started, "We think Green Goblin knows who you two are."
"Dangit," (Y/n) groaned, running a hand over her face, "Harry must have said something."
"No, Harry would have warned us," Peter shook his head, "He must have said something that made Norman consider it and he just put things together."
"So what do we do now?" (Y/n) questioned, "We can't just go attack Norman Osborn, but we can't let an attack like this happen to our family again."
"He's just going to keep updating his tech too... You two need to deal with him, soon," May stated.
"Harry still doesn't know," Peter sighed, "How is he going to react to that?"
"We gotta hope for the best."
"Yo!" Jess ran over to the group, "I just finished the statement. Luckily, building insurance should cover everything that needs to be repaired. Until then you guys can stay with me in the penthouse."
"Oh, Jess we couldn't-"
"Ah," Jess held up her hand, "You will. You're friends, and your daughter is a fellow mutant. Besides, I have too many rooms in there, I get lonely. Via might be over sometimes but that means you can meet her! We'll all be one big, happy family."
(Y/n) giggled, "Thanks Jess, you're the best."
"Yeah I am," Jess grinned, "So, why the hell did Green Goblin attack here? It seems different compared to his other attacks."
"Because he knows who we are."
"Well, that's unfortunate," Jess seemed unsure how to react, "All of you gotta be careful until he's handled alright? I just got the job for building manager, don't make it more difficult than it has to."
"Glad you're concerned for our safety Jess."
"You know I am, shut up half-pint."
