Chapter 20

And then my soul saw you and it kind of went, 'Oh there you are. I've been looking all over for you.'

'Because we offered to help you doesn't make us your slaves whom you can use as hard labour.' Gavin glared.

'Your friends offered. Kelsey offered. You did not offer. I blackmailed you into this. Important distinction. And technically, seeing as they offered, I have every right to--'

'To turn us into your minions?' He asked, sarcastically.

'Yeah. Pretty much.'

'You really are shameless, aren't you?' He remarked.

'Shame is for losers.'

'Right. Being shameless is so much better.' He rolled his eyes.

'Yup.' I grinned delightfully. 'Kelsey is on pastry duty. Tell her to bake as much cakes as she can and then we'll go door to door and hand them out and take a batch or two to the orphanage. You, Leo and Tom are coming with me. We'll go feed some hungry parking meters and on our way back we'll pick up any supplies Kelsey needs.'

Gavin relayed my orders while the rest nodded attentively.

'That doesn't sound too bad. You made her seem like a brutal dictator.' Tom frowned.

'Yeah.' Leo nodded.

'Speak for yourselves. Do you know how hard baking is?' Kelsey glared.

'You love baking. This isn't a chore for you. It's a hobby. One that we are paying for.' He gestured to himself, Tom and Leo.

'When you put it like that...' She beamed, wiping off muffin crumbs from the table.

'Jesus Christ. Starlight is rubbing off on you.' Gavin grunted. I beamed.

'Not a good thing.' He glared at both of us.

'Gavin, no one cares whether you think it's a good thing or not.' I all but rolled my eyes. 'Kelsey get started on baking. There rest of you are coming with me.'

'She says you should get started on your baking. Send us a list of the things you need.' Gavin relayed.

***

'Gavin.'

'I have no quarters left.' He glared.

'Then tell Tom or Leo to get it.' I said, referring to a parking meter.

'None of us have any quarters left!'

'Tone it down.' I rolled my eyes. 'I guess we can go to grocery store now.'

'No. We can go to the town square and dance around a bonfire.' He drawled sarcastically.

'Zip it, captain grumpy pants.' I led the way to the grocery store, two blocks away.

'Has Kelsey sent you the list of the things she needs?' I asked as we entered the store.

'Its a long list.' Gavin said not at all looking surprised. 'We should split up.'

'Sure. Send the list.' Leo shrugged.

Tom and Leo's phone beeped with a new notification. They both checked their phones at the same time.

'That's a long list.' Tom remarked.

'What the heck does she need all these stuff for?' Leo frowned.

'She's not paying for any of these. Were you expecting a short list?' Gavin arched one eyebrow.

'Oh.'

'Yeah.' Gavin nodded.

'So we're agreeing to only buy what we can afford. Right?' Tom said pointedly.

'Did you for one second think we were going to get everything on the list?' Gavin replied.

'Good.' Tom nodded.

'What if she needs all of it?' Leo asked.

'First, no one needs everything on a list that long. And second, you've got money right? Then you can buy it for her.' Tom shrugged. He picked a shopping cart and dragged Leo off to the opposite direction.

'I know you know that there's something going on between Leo and Kelsey.' I began conversationally as Gavin and I walked off in the other direction.

He clenched his jaw.

'Haven't you learned anything so far? I'm impossible to ignore. So why are you pretending to be oblivious? You're intentionally making Leo feel like he's betraying you and Kelsey... Well, you know what you're doing. And you're doing it on purpose.' I surmised.

'Go to hell.' He grunted.

'I would but Satan still has that restraining order against me.' I smiled sweetly. 'Now, answer the question.'

'She's my sister.' He grunted.

'Asia is someone's sister as well.' I countered.

'Its...'

'What? Different? Complicated? Gavin, she's not a kid. She's younger than you, sure. She's your sister, sure. But she is not a kid.' I interrupted.

'She's...' He trailed off.

'She's what?'

'Leo is... Look, I'm just trying to protect her. Leo isn't exactly a one-girl guy.'

I cocked my head to the side, studying him intently.

'What?' He glared.

'Gavin, the exact same thing could be said about you. Are you saying Asia shouldn't have given you a chance because you happen to have a reputation?'

'I've changed!'

'You? Changed? Give me a break. You like a good girl now but we both know it's not going to last
And who's to say Leo hasn't changed? You're his friend. You know him better than most. This thing with Kelsey is different and you know it. That's why you're so against it, isn't it?'

'I hate you.' He sighed.

'Only because I'm right, aren't I?'

'She's my sister. I can't...' He sighed and raked a hand through his hair furiously.

'Leo is going to break her heart even though he doesn't want to. Its going to happen. I'm just trying to protect her. Leo has been my bro for years. I can't and won't cut him out of my life and if something goes wrong between them, I don't want her to have to live with the pain of having to see him every other day.'

'Look that's really honourable and all whatnot but what if nothing goes wrong? Then what? You just prevent them from being together for nothing?' I asked.

'I'm not going to risk it. If they are truly meant to be, they'll find each other when she's more grown up.' He shrugged.

'So you believe in love?' I asked with a surprised smile.

'No. Not love but in Kelsey. I believe she'll have any and every thing she ever wants. If a few years from now, if that's still Leo and they try to. . . whatever, I won't stand in their way. But not right now. I won't have anyone breaking my sisters heart.' He shook his head.

'You're an amazing brother.' I whispered, meeting his gaze. 'If nothing else.'

'No, I'm not. You can't have a sister like Kelsey and be a douche.' He replied.

It was only then that I noticed that the shopping cart was almost full. We quickly got the remaining items and met up with Tom and Leo at the counter. Gavin refused to meet my eyes and he didn't utter a single word to me. Not in the store when I tried to catch his gaze because Leo ended up getting everything Kelsey asked for and definitely not on the ride back home.

'Kelsey, we're here with your supplies!' Gavin called out, pushing open the front door.

Our collective jaws fell open. Well, mine didn't fall so much as it elegantly slid open.

Oh who am I kidding! It fell right along with Tom, Leo and Gavin's.

Well, I'll be damned.

Gavin found his voice first. 'What the heck did you need supplies for then?!'

Author's Note:

It's a really short chapter, I know. Sorry about that. It's more of a filler chapter. I'll try to post the next one as soon as possible. School is a lot busier this semester so I barely get any free time but I'll try to update as soon as I can.

Thanks for understanding.
